Are you in Cuba?
...personal story related to Cuba: my dear father-in-law passed away recently so his 3 children were dividing up some of his personal possessions, furniture, art works, etc. Among other items, my wife ended up with a somewhat strange abstract painting, one of the key figures in it seems to be a giant penis, it's by a Cuban artist and no one else wanted it so she took it just to throw up on a wall in our 3rd floor hallway or in one of the kids' rooms. My inlaws purchased it on one of their "art exchange and appreciation" trips to Cuba a few years ago (yes, in spite of State Dept. bans on travel there). My boy didn't like it either so I hung it up next to my computer desk. A couple days ago my wife googled the artists name and found that he's quite famous and some of his oil painting sell at major art auctions for $50,000 to $100,000 so we figure this is worth at least $20,000...plus he autographed it personally thanking my inlaws by name so from watching Antique Roadshow I figure that adds "provenance". One person's trash is another person's treasure. |

Mariel?
The port of Mariel is the nearest Cuban port to the United States. In 1980, some 125,000 Cubans left Mariel and went to the United States in what is known as the Mariel boatlift. While many reached the USA, several died while travelling through the ocean. Those involved became known as "Marielitos". Mariel Hemingway is named after the town. |
No and no.
Let's see if I can help you guys out some. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box... or island. Which ever the case maybe. |
Are you on a smaller island than the country?
|
Well the nation is made up of several islands. Am I on the largest of those islands... no.
|
are you west of Habana?
|
I am west of La Habana.
|
cabanas?

No.
And let me restate what I posted in 5516... Quote:

No, running out of towns on this tiny island.

Nueva Gerona?
NG is the capital city of the Isla de la Juventud special municipality of Cuba. The city is located between the hills of Caballos and Casas, about 3 km up the Río Casas, which provides a navigable waterway to the Caribbean Sea. The city was founded in 1830 by American pioneers. There is an American graveyard in Nueva Gerona to this day. ...in case this isn't right, here's some more towns to guess next time: Other communities are Columbia, Mac Kinley, Santa Bárbara, Cuchilla Alta, Punta del Este, Sierra de Caballos and Sierra de Casas. The island was called the Isle of Pines (Isla de Pinos) until being renamed in 1978. |
Nueva Gerona is where I am and will be later this summer. I'm joining a dive team to do some reef research just off the north end of the island. This was tentatively planned a couple years ago but couldn't get the travel permits. Oh how things have changed. I could have always hopped a flight from here but the majority of the team is due in from the US. They got their permit last month, so it's go this summer.
You're up Nick |
Tul,
While you're there maybe consider buying some art from local artists in Cuba...and maybe you too can end up with a sort of valuable and interesting painting of a giant penis. Cigars...for unc, and me!...I can PM you my free UPS shipping acct. number if you end up with any....good buddy ;) OK, where in the world am I this time? Hurry up, I'm shivering from excitement! |
Bellingshausen Station, Antarctica?
I can get all the Cuban cigars you want, not sure if they'll make it through customs via UPS. |
great first guess, but no, since a qualification that I hadn't yet mentioned, figuring you guys would not even be close for a couple pages, is "other than polar regions"
|
frostbite falls, minnesota?

|
no...head north and if you're driving it will take you over 30 hours non-stop
|
i was going to say "khyber pass," but i believe that's situated between pakistan and afghanistan, unless you want to bend history back a few thousand years...
i got nothin'... |
Khyber Pass is in the neighborhood, but go east roughly 300 miles, just above Jammu and Kashmir and think of what might be here that there are large ones in the polar regions but this is the largest in the world outside the polar regions.
|
uttaranchal glaciers?
|
you're cold but you got the right idea with glaciers. But Uttaranchal is NOT the largest non polar glacier in the world. Go NW about 300 miles and bring your skiis.
|
govind pashu national park?
|
go north a couple hundred miles, north of Jammu and Kashmir and look for the biggest one
|
great himalayan?
|
nope
|
any norther and it's pakistan...
sorry, that's all i got... |
Take another stab at it:
This glacier I'm at is the largest non polar glacier in the world and in fact, it is in a disputed territory right on the India - Pakistan border...but in recent years India actually controls the area where the glacier is. |
pamirski national park?
|
Can I give you the win since you're so close...but no cigar? If you vote "yes" I'll post where I am and some info about it.

FINALLY YES!!! you're up, unc.
World’s 7 Largest Glaciers by Continent Siachen Glacier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Siachen glacier is the highest battleground on earth. It is a place where India and Pakistan always meet in a frozen standoff. It is the world’s largest non polar glacier, Siachen glacier is sometimes called third pole. This glacier is well known for its scarce population and treacherous climatic conditions. Siachin boasts more than 2 trillion cubic feet of ice, and within 25 kms has 45 peaks which rise up to a height of 18000 feet. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...henGlacier.jpg Satellite imagery of the Siachen Glacier http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2..._satellite.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...en-glacier.jpg |
