Are you in Cuba?

...personal story related to Cuba: my dear father-in-law passed away recently so his 3 children were dividing up some of his personal possessions, furniture, art works, etc. Among other items, my wife ended up with a somewhat strange abstract painting, one of the key figures in it seems to be a giant penis, it's by a Cuban artist and no one else wanted it so she took it just to throw up on a wall in our 3rd floor hallway or in one of the kids' rooms. My inlaws purchased it on one of their "art exchange and appreciation" trips to Cuba a few years ago (yes, in spite of State Dept. bans on travel there). My boy didn't like it either so I hung it up next to my computer desk. A couple days ago my wife googled the artists name and found that he's quite famous and some of his oil painting sell at major art auctions for $50,000 to $100,000 so we figure this is worth at least $20,000...plus he autographed it personally thanking my inlaws by name so from watching Antique Roadshow I figure that adds "provenance". One person's trash is another person's treasure.

I am in Cuba. I'll tell you exactly where if you Fed-Ex me that painting. Not usually that found of penis', well other then my own, but sounds like I'd like this one.

And I'll save you guys time I'm not at Gitmo or Havana.

Jetée 04-23-2009 10:15 AM

San Juan?

Poppinjay 04-23-2009 10:21 AM

West of, yes.

uncle phil 04-23-2009 12:53 PM

matanzas?

BadNick 04-23-2009 04:15 PM

Mariel?

The port of Mariel is the nearest Cuban port to the United States. In 1980, some 125,000 Cubans left Mariel and went to the United States in what is known as the Mariel boatlift. While many reached the USA, several died while travelling through the ocean. Those involved became known as "Marielitos". Mariel Hemingway is named after the town.

Tully Mars 04-23-2009 04:56 PM

No and no.

Let's see if I can help you guys out some. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box... or island. Which ever the case maybe.

Jetée 04-23-2009 05:54 PM

Are you on a smaller island than the country?

Tully Mars 04-23-2009 06:15 PM

Well the nation is made up of several islands. Am I on the largest of those islands... no.

BadNick 04-23-2009 07:28 PM

are you west of Habana?

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 02:11 AM

I am west of La Habana.

uncle phil 04-24-2009 02:15 AM

cabanas?

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 02:19 AM

No.

And let me restate what I posted in 5516...

Quote:

Jetée 04-24-2009 02:29 AM

But I asked if you were on a smaller one, I see... so, Isla de la Juventud?

Yes, you did in #5515. Which is why I posted in #5516

To answer your question and say I am on one of the smaller islands in the nation.

And yes I am on Isla de la Juventud.

uncle phil 04-24-2009 03:12 AM

presidio modelo?

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 03:25 AM

nope

uncle phil 04-24-2009 03:37 AM

santa fe?

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 05:06 AM

No, running out of towns on this tiny island.

BadNick 04-24-2009 06:41 AM

Nueva Gerona?

NG is the capital city of the Isla de la Juventud special municipality of Cuba. The city is located between the hills of Caballos and Casas, about 3 km up the Río Casas, which provides a navigable waterway to the Caribbean Sea.

The city was founded in 1830 by American pioneers. There is an American graveyard in Nueva Gerona to this day.

...in case this isn't right, here's some more towns to guess next time:
Other communities are Columbia, Mac Kinley, Santa Bárbara, Cuchilla Alta, Punta del Este, Sierra de Caballos and Sierra de Casas. The island was called the Isle of Pines (Isla de Pinos) until being renamed in 1978.

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 08:57 AM

Nueva Gerona is where I am and will be later this summer. I'm joining a dive team to do some reef research just off the north end of the island. This was tentatively planned a couple years ago but couldn't get the travel permits. Oh how things have changed. I could have always hopped a flight from here but the majority of the team is due in from the US. They got their permit last month, so it's go this summer.

You're up Nick

BadNick 04-24-2009 10:56 AM

Tul,
While you're there maybe consider buying some art from local artists in Cuba...and maybe you too can end up with a sort of valuable and interesting painting of a giant penis.

Cigars...for unc, and me!...I can PM you my free UPS shipping acct. number if you end up with any....good buddy ;)

OK, where in the world am I this time? Hurry up, I'm shivering from excitement!

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 11:17 AM

Bellingshausen Station, Antarctica?

I can get all the Cuban cigars you want, not sure if they'll make it through customs via UPS.

BadNick 04-24-2009 11:35 AM

great first guess, but no, since a qualification that I hadn't yet mentioned, figuring you guys would not even be close for a couple pages, is "other than polar regions"

uncle phil 04-24-2009 11:59 AM

frostbite falls, minnesota?

BadNick 04-24-2009 12:52 PM

no, but does ring live near there? I think it's snowed a lot where she is but she has not reported frostbite, fortunately.

uncle phil 04-24-2009 01:11 PM

i think ring lives somewhere around wooly-bear, wisconsin...

NH?

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 01:22 PM

WH?

BadNick 04-24-2009 02:45 PM

yes NH

Not WH

Tully Mars 04-24-2009 03:16 PM

Asia? Not the band the place.

uncle phil 04-24-2009 03:25 PM

BadNick 04-24-2009 07:25 PM

I was at the end of my rope but now I'm in Asia

uncle phil 04-25-2009 02:00 AM

BadNick 04-25-2009 07:31 AM

MacGuyver 04-25-2009 10:02 AM

BadNick 04-25-2009 01:47 PM

MacGuyver 04-25-2009 05:22 PM

korea (n/s)?

uncle phil 04-25-2009 05:34 PM

indian ocean?

BadNick 04-25-2009 08:52 PM

not any korea. Yes country touches the indian ocean. Once you get the country, I'm at a significant geological feature.

MacGuyver 04-25-2009 10:19 PM

might as well start with india

uncle phil 04-26-2009 03:22 AM

island nation?

BadNick 04-26-2009 08:32 AM

not island but the mac attack is on...yes india

This geologic feature plays into my previous "clue":

BadNick 04-26-2009 08:01 PM

no...head north and if you're driving it will take you over 30 hours non-stop

uncle phil 04-27-2009 12:26 PM

i was going to say "khyber pass," but i believe that's situated between pakistan and afghanistan, unless you want to bend history back a few thousand years...

i got nothin'...

BadNick 04-27-2009 05:32 PM

Khyber Pass is in the neighborhood, but go east roughly 300 miles, just above Jammu and Kashmir and think of what might be here that there are large ones in the polar regions but this is the largest in the world outside the polar regions.

uncle phil 04-28-2009 02:17 AM

uttaranchal glaciers?

BadNick 04-28-2009 03:48 AM

you're cold but you got the right idea with glaciers. But Uttaranchal is NOT the largest non polar glacier in the world. Go NW about 300 miles and bring your skiis.

uncle phil 04-28-2009 03:55 AM

govind pashu national park?

BadNick 04-28-2009 04:00 AM

go north a couple hundred miles, north of Jammu and Kashmir and look for the biggest one

uncle phil 04-28-2009 04:38 AM

great himalayan?

BadNick 04-28-2009 06:27 AM

nope

uncle phil 04-28-2009 07:57 AM

any norther and it's pakistan...

sorry, that's all i got...

BadNick 04-28-2009 09:58 AM

Take another stab at it:

This glacier I'm at is the largest non polar glacier in the world and in fact, it is in a disputed territory right on the India - Pakistan border...but in recent years India actually controls the area where the glacier is.

uncle phil 04-28-2009 10:03 AM

pamirski national park?

BadNick 04-28-2009 10:08 AM

Can I give you the win since you're so close...but no cigar? If you vote "yes" I'll post where I am and some info about it.

uncle phil 04-28-2009 10:40 AM

karakul lake?

BadNick 04-28-2009 01:04 PM

I did say I was on a glacier, and the name has the word "glacier" in it

uncle phil 04-28-2009 01:19 PM

BadNick 04-28-2009 03:35 PM

uncle phil 04-28-2009 03:39 PM

BadNick 04-28-2009 07:06 PM

FINALLY YES!!! you're up, unc.

World’s 7 Largest Glaciers by Continent

Siachen Glacier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siachen glacier is the highest battleground on earth. It is a place where India and Pakistan always meet in a frozen standoff. It is the world’s largest non polar glacier, Siachen glacier is sometimes called third pole. This glacier is well known for its scarce population and treacherous climatic conditions. Siachin boasts more than 2 trillion cubic feet of ice, and within 25 kms has 45 peaks which rise up to a height of 18000 feet.
