The lyrics incorporate many of the historical facts, but in contrast to the last line of her song, the founding of Fordlandia took place near the end of many successful years of production of the Ford Model T, the last of which rolled off the assembly line in 1927.

Had to look this up...

Quote:

One day Henry Ford went down
Built his very own new town
Only one for miles around
In the middle of the Amazon
Hospitals and factories
A quarter-million rubber trees
Gonna beat that European squeeze
And raise his bottom line

Fordlandia still standing there
In the jungle air
In the middle of nowhere
Some dreams die hard
Some notions are
Like the city of Fordlandia

A church, a school and a butcher shop
But they never got a single crop
The whole thing was a giant flop
From the day he thought it up
How could anybody know
You can't plant rubber trees in a row
They need a little space to grow
If your gonna send some tires back home

Fordlandia still standing there
In the jungle air
In the middle of nowhere
Some dreams die hard
Some notions are
Like the city of Fordlandia

Speaking now in Ford's defense
Sometimes things make perfect sense
The best laid plans of mice and men
Will often go astray
All of history's greatest minds
Dared to lay it on the line
They came up short a couple of times
Before they made the Model ?T?

Fordlandia still standing there
In the jungle air
In the middle of nowhere
Some dreams die hard
Some notions are
Like the city of Fordlandia

Thanks for the lyrics, Tul. I hope I don't upset Shell, but I love Nancy Griffith...I'll pop one of her CD's in on my way home.

Maybe I should have said I'll never be as old as you until we're both dead. You don't get any older then that.

Yes. I was suppose to move into this place in early winter. Then certainly by the end of winter. The it was spring and it just kept going on and on. Once I got this place I couldn't power and phone hooked. At point I was in both houses for almost two months. For power I ended climbing the pole and hooking it up myself. But for tech. reasons I couldn't get 220, thus no A/C and I couldn't do the phone at all.

But I'm here now and it's been worth it.

I've not found any references to where I am that use the word "llha.." or any facsimile of that word, or even the word "island". I would say I'm far enough off-shore ...more than 100 miles...that it would not normally be considered "mouth of the Amazon" ...unless you mean the huge, dramatic plume of the Amazon River that extends thousands of kilometers into the Atlantic Ocean, then I'm about in there

BadNick 06-05-2009 10:14 AM

Wild guesses don't count, Tul! If they did, you would have found me ;) Yes, I'm on St. Peter and Paul Rocks. You're up next, bud.

The islets expose serpentinized mantle peridotite and kaesurtite mylonite on the top of the second-largest megamullion in the world, and they are the only location on Earth where the abyssal mantle is exposed above sea level.

Sedona is a sacred place where metaphysical energy emanates from the inner earth. Sedona is recognized worldwide for the presence of powerful energy spots known as "vortices." According to some, Sedona Arizona's towering red rocks stimulate sensitivity permitting people to realize true dreams and ambitions. Points of inner earth energy emanations disperse across the Sedona area but are strongest at particular locations. The best-known Sedona vortex sites include Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock (Red Rock Crossing), and Boynton Canyon.

ok, my new guess: are you in Tortilla Flats? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortilla_Flat%2C_Arizona

Tortilla Flats is the last surviving stagecoach stop along the Apache Trail. Tortilla Flat is presumed to be Arizona's smallest official "community" having a U.S. Post Office and voter's precinct. The town has a population of 6.

Hey, if a few of us go there we could double the population!

not any of the guesses above...not Laos, not Europe.

I did check out those Lao ant egg omletes which are apparently made with regular chicken eggs and then the ant eggs added for flavor, a mild bitterness...next time I'm in Lao or a Laotian restaurant I might give this a try.

Otherwise, where I am has nothing in particular to do with eggs other than how eggs would be related to any other random place. Forget the eggs as far as finding where I am and we can enjoy some omletes and eggs benedict after you find me...I prefer smoked salmon on my eggs benedict rather than the traditional ham < that's not a clue, I'm just saying.

Is the "Gulf of Arden" the same as the Gulf of Aden? I'm not sure.

But in fact, I'm sort of between the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Technically this island is usually considered to be in the Indian Ocean so unc is correct.

Think "unusual, other-worldly..." to describe some features of this place.

Shell 06-08-2009 07:51 AM

...Socotra?

BadNick 06-08-2009 08:29 AM

YES! Shell found me. I'm on Socotra. You're up next, Shell.

Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands and islets in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa some 220 miles south of the Arabian peninsula, belonging to the Republic of Yemen.

Socotra is one of the most isolated landforms on Earth of continental origin (i.e., not of volcanic origin). The archipelago was once part of the supercontinent of Gondwana and detached during the Miocene, in the same set of rifting events that opened the Gulf of Aden to its northwest.

Socotra is considered the "jewel" of biodiversity in the Arabian sea. The island was recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008.

Maybe because you folks were so focused on "eggs", I notice there's a large yellow egg just south of Socotra.
