Tully, Cuba is not where I am residing currently

Shell 05-24-2009 04:50 PM

Jetée 05-24-2009 04:57 PM

Sorry, but both are incorrect. One or the other has interesting colors to say the least.

Tully Mars 05-24-2009 05:10 PM

Shell 05-24-2009 05:21 PM

uncle phil 05-25-2009 03:03 AM

st. kitts?

Jetée 05-25-2009 08:52 PM

sorry for the delay folks, but I got tripped up in bureaucracy; though, I have good news.

with his first post in the new round, BadNick ascertained my residing country and its colors. now all that's left to do is tell me what village I'm in, and if it's not obvious why I'm there, I'll suppose I'll concede that to the victor.

Tully Mars 05-26-2009 01:38 AM

Kingstown due to the human-rights issues going on there?

uncle phil 05-26-2009 02:24 AM

I believe you got that right, Tul. Caribbean news briefs - Taiwan News Online

No, it has more to with a specific day when I took over this round, but I am within biking distance of Kingstown.

uncle phil 05-26-2009 03:38 PM

mesopotamia...

Jetée 05-26-2009 03:56 PM

not mesopotamia...

---------- Post added at 07:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:52 PM ----------

EDIT:
also, I may have been mistaken in my previous statement that I am within biking distance of Kingstown, because of a minor detail I overlooked in that I am separated from the capital city by a few sq. mi. of sea water, not land. I think there are such things as water-bikes, but that's not probably what you would have had in mind initially given my statement.

Tully Mars 05-26-2009 07:22 PM

I have no freaking idea.

Fort Charlotte?

Jetée 05-26-2009 08:02 PM

Really? I probably (inadvertently) dropped the biggest clue so far.

You're closer Tully, by looking outside the capital, but still not quite there. Given the history of Fort Charlotte, I almost wish I was there; maybe after you've found me, I'll hop a ferry to the battlesite.

Tully Mars 05-26-2009 08:22 PM

Belmont?

uncle phil 05-27-2009 02:13 AM

pretoria?

Jetée 05-27-2009 02:37 AM

neither of the above.

uncle phil 05-27-2009 03:03 AM

st. hilaire?

BadNick 05-27-2009 03:33 AM

Clare Valley? ...though I have no idea why, just a wild guess

Tully Mars 05-27-2009 03:45 AM

Port Elizabeth? Why? I have no idea either.

Jetée 05-27-2009 03:58 AM

Yargh :(

It feels as though I'm leading y'all around in a circle, but I'm honestly trying to not. I'm near the capital Kingstown, remember; the Port Elizabeth guess finally pegs my correct island. (although in terms of orientation, I'm nowhere near it.)

Last thing I have to say is to try to recall what day I took over this round, and it should evolve into a clear spot where I am, and why I'm there.

BadNick 05-27-2009 07:41 AM

I know the movie Pirates of the Caribbean and sequels were filmed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines...and the last of the trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, was released worldwide on May 24, 2007 so perhaps that's the "May 24" connection Mr. Jet has alluded to.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/ygpE12B1.jpg

Are you being a pirate at St. Vincent Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere...I might add "preceded only by Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia"?

uncle phil 05-27-2009 08:17 AM

la pompe?

Jetée 05-27-2009 09:04 AM

sorry, I'm not a pirate in the Caribbean, BadNick, nor am I am at the botanical gardens, though that was some interesting info on the subject.

I'm not in La Pompe either. Well, since no one is going to utter redunancy and say I'm on Bequia, think of the all the different Bays on the island; in-between two of them is where I have been hiding all along.

BadNick 05-27-2009 10:03 AM

on this close-up of the islands I see a spot marked "Jetty"...might that be you floating off the dock in the bay?

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...%203/jetty.jpg

uncle phil 05-27-2009 10:36 AM

there's also a "jetty" over by the old fort at the western end of belmont road...

could thet be it?

Jetée 05-27-2009 04:37 PM

Agai, very creative findings on the island, nick and phil, so creative in fact that I wish I thought of it first, but alas, I'm Not There

Here's a simplified map of the isle of Bequia, may it serve you well:

I'll take a shot at The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary...?

And you would be correct! I am indeed visiting The Old Hegg Turle Sanctuary, though I've overstayed the visitation by a few days, to celebrate this past weekend's World Tutle Day (May 23rd). Founded by Brother King, the conservatory is his new life's mission, and has dedicated his life to safely releasing endangered Hawksbill turtle hatchlings into the nearby waters.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/59/20...4a8ec953_m.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3470/...79a846b5_m.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/...00f849d0_m.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3015/...e0225811_m.jpg

Although I had many other beautiful places in mind (namely, Micronesia, Rochester, among others) to properly commend worldwide efforts to preserve and honor the majestic & varied species of turtles, I thought to hit closer to home to a place I've actually toured around in a past life.

Well done, Nick. The world is now yours. (Though, remember, I'm still King of Bequia ;) )

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/920...ddc4bdbf91.jpg

BadNick 05-28-2009 03:35 AM

Hail to the King of Bequia who seems to have a sympathetic dome head somewhat like a turtle shell! I'm now sorry I missed World Turtle Day, especially since that third from the left reptile above is quite like my own Franklin, a red-earer slider. We got Franklin about 9 years ago when he was about 3" long and now he is over 10" long. Last year he...errrr she...laid an egg in her aqua-terrarium which I found amazing since Franklin...errr Franklina...has not even seen another turtle since birth. If I was near Bequia I would let Franklina free there but up here the winters are a touch too cold for her. I'm now setting up a kiddie pool in our yard as a temporary outdoor home for her and we'll bring her back inside to her tank early next Fall.

OK...where should I go this time? I'm accepting suggestions, but in the meantime, please give me a bit to come up with a good one. So I'll retreat into my shell ...hey, hi Shell!...and let you know when I'm there.

BadNick 05-28-2009 07:50 AM

OK, where in the world am I?

uncle phil 05-28-2009 11:02 AM

stewartstown, pa?

BadNick 05-28-2009 11:28 AM

I should go there if that's where Stewart's Black Cherry Wishniak soda comes from since that's one of my favorite liquids

but that's not where I am now.

BadNick 05-29-2009 12:50 PM

though some have been known to frown on two-fers in this thread, I say "what the hell Shell it's only a game"

So Shell is getting in the neighborhood with "middle east" ...and then unc's "masada" is even closer...but it's neither of those places. It is an ancient, historically significant place, though.

Since I just noticed this new notice at top of page, maybe I'll sneak in an application of it here:

Sometimes an important part of mature discussion - which is what we do around here - is being honest with ourselves and each other. Calling someone's statement a lie is not a flame or punishable. You are not required to believe something you know is bullshit. So go ahead and call it when you see it - just be polite about it. The statement's the thing, not the person.

BadNick 05-30-2009 07:48 AM

what the hell is this coming to, a Shell game? Good hunting, Shell, you found me. Your turn to go hide.

...yes I am in Petra that cool rock place in Jordan that was made famous by being featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ...in case it wasn't famous before that ;) or if you're not into that genre of film maybe you'd prefer its appearance in Passion in the Desert, or maybe even Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, or the one that made me wish I was Sinbad, Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, or if you're from the MTV generation and only watch music videos, maybe you saw it in the Sisters of Mercy music video "Dominion", and of course there's the soon to be released Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, not to mention if you live only in the Game World you would see it in video games Spy Hunter (2001), King's Quest V, Lego Indiana Jones and least but probably not last Sonic Unleashed

Petra ("petra-πέτρα", cleft in the rock in Greek; Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ) is an archaeological site in the Arabah, Ma'an Governorate, Jordan, lying on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is renowned for its rock-cut architecture. Petra is also one of the new wonders of the world. The Nabateans constructed it as their capital city around 100 BCE.

The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced to the West by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was famously described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate prize-winning sonnet by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage." In 1985, Petra was designated a World Heritage Site.

Too many cool pics of this place so I'm just randomly throwing some on here:

...uh oh...i'm going out for awhile...well, it IS saturday nite!...so anyone who wants to go can go...when i get back if no one has gone i'll pick up where we left off...

Tully Mars 05-30-2009 02:09 PM

NH?

BadNick 05-30-2009 02:17 PM

Shell, yep I got some. There is a little Armenian store near where I live that has all sorts of ethnic stuff from around that part of the world, and they also have home-made baked goods and food stuffs...so I got a container of their hummus and tahini and I have some great olive oil and fresh parsley...just missed the garbonzo's....I like that word and would consider naming my next male child "Garbonzo". Of course this just wetted my appetite so for lunch today I had a Greek gyro and man, was that good!

...you all are the best! Waiting all this time without even one swear word about me behind my back. Well, here we go! Where am i ??? And let me just say it's a little chilly here. Name the city AND the event that i'm attending

...Yes, Tully, NH is correct

...Yes, EH, Nick (btw...ever heard of a little casual eatery called Baba Gannoug..sp? ...i get falafels there sometimes...love that tahini sauce)

...yes Phil...oh, that wasn't a question:thumbsup: (would have enjoyed it!)

Tully Mars 05-31-2009 07:18 AM

Asia?

BadNick 05-31-2009 07:46 AM

Alaska?

I've eaten baba ganoush many times, but never been in a restaurant by that name. But there's a little chain of restaurants called Maoz and one on South St. in Philly, they have really great falafel treats; last night I even mentioned Maoz to my wife since I was in the mood for some of their stuff, but we ended up doing something else. I think there is such a high likelyhood of a successful Maoz in my neighborhood that I sent away for their franchise info...but it seems to me they want too much for it so I'm on hold with that idea.

Here's some Maoz pics I've posted before:

In fact I'll throw you a rather obscure clue since we were both thrown off our game...

Keeping it cold...

I shot six holes in my freezer

Find the origins and you'll find my location.

BadNick 05-31-2009 07:38 PM

I thought maybe Jimmy Buffett was playing a concert in Alaska or someplace cold, but I haven't found a concert date there to substantiate that theory. But I did find this pic of a great 20 lb. class Kenai River rainbow trout...probably taste good with some beer:

Tully...does your location have anything to do with the Top Gun flight school (real one is in nevada) which had something to do with Val Kilmer as "IceMan" in the Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun"?

You got the Buffett reference. Good. Now what or where is the song written about. My town should be easy. My exact location could take a couple guesses.
