...yes, i am east of 26 so to speak.... Actually, 26 is southwest of me but stops before it reaches me

uncle phil 06-29-2009 05:42 AM

i'm confused; I-26 doesn't end until it gets to charleston...

Shell 06-29-2009 05:48 AM

...if you go south on 26 then that is true. I'm not south...and i'm not that far west

...head for the hills...i'm so much further north there's even a ski resort near me

uncle phil 06-29-2009 07:27 AM

you've totally lost me now...

north of I-40, east of I-26, yet not that far west?

Shell 06-29-2009 08:49 AM

...it's true that "i am not that far west" INTO that SOUTHWESTERN point that jets out from the rest of the state where I-26 is located

...and it's true that "i am east of I-26" if you were to head north along longitude lines from I-26 (you would end up in TN which is west of my location). You have to use longitude lines though because I-26 deadends a little north of Asheville...and i'm in the NORTHWESTERN part of the state.

...notice that NC is not a perfect rectangle. It angles. If you head east on 40 you will get out of that southwestern point, that jets out from the rest of the state, and then you can head north to the NORTHWESTERN part of the state.

..so it is also true that "i am north of 40".

uncle phil 06-29-2009 08:55 AM

well, there's mars hill?

Shell 06-29-2009 09:07 AM

...i'm not in mars hill...i'm in the northwest corner of NC

.

...no, i'm not on Beaver Creek

...during a sunday afternoon drive through ____________, I was especially taken by a charming clear shallow Watauga River that runs through the center. In the middle of the stream sat a grandfather and his daughter at a little table and chairs having afternoon tea...i mean right smack dab IN the water....barefoot and dressed for tea from the knees up. The mountains surrounded them. A tiny community of charming quaint homes lined the banks...all well manicured.

Here is a photo of the actual river there...unfortunately i missed the photo op of the tea party...

`

Shell 06-29-2009 04:38 PM

no...not jefferson landing.

I'm in North Carolina's first National Historic Registrar Rural Community

(i thought i had misspelled watauga so i edited my posts...only to realize i had spelled it correctly in the first place...it's correct right now)

Valle Crucis?

Shell 06-29-2009 05:09 PM

...YES...Valle Crucis! There is a Porsche Club rental there for maximum opportunity to enjoy a wonderful sunday afternoon drive....

Valle Crucis is North Carolina’s first rural historic district and the entire community is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nestled in the hills between the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest corner of North Carolina, Valle Crucis is convenient to the other resort areas of Boone (remember AppState's football team?), Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk. Nestled along the Eastern Continental Divide at elevations of 3,000 to 5,000 feet you’ll find lush open meadows surrounded by densely forested mountains, emerald green summers, golden hued falls, winters glistening with white and springs literally bursting with wildflowers and rainbows, each painted against crystal clear Carolina Blue skies.

I rented a cabin in this valley last year for a family reunion and the area captivated me. I took a lazy afternoon drive through the area and after the scene at the watauga river (see abve), I came upon the Mast General Store, a Nationally Registered historic building as well as The Baird House (1790), The Mast Farm Inn (1812), and the Old Episcopal Mission (1842)...all restored to their original splendor. The General Store still has the original Post Office inside which is working and coffee is 5 cents. I stepped inside and there were people dancing (some unique stepping-in-one place type country dancing) with country musicians jamming...lots of penny candy, carharts, homemade icecream, 2 people playing checkers on an old barrel (actually, it was my mother and daughter...lol)...and merchandise like you wouldn't believe.

You can hike up trails to Crab Orchard Falls or along other seemingly limitless trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Riding horses through old farm fields in the valley and fishing for trout from the banks of the streams and Watauga River providing an enjoyable glimpse at the days of old...the best way to recap the day’s events is from a rocking chair placed outside in the crisp mountain air, with views of spectacular foliage and the quaint valley.

BadNick 06-30-2009 12:03 PM

The Power of Uncle Phil has prevailed again! I wish I know how you do that, unc.

On Sept 26, 1926 a monument where Old Chief Joseph (tu-eka-kas) lies buried was dedicated at the foot of Wallowa Lake. The father of the legendary Chief Joseph died and was originally buried at the forks of the Wallowas and Lostine Rivers. More than fifty years later, his remains were moved by white men to his present burial site.
As Old Chief Joseph lay dying, he spoke to his young son, "My son, my body is returning to my mother earth, and my spirit is going very soon to see the great spirit chief. When I am gone, think of your country...always remember your father never sold his country. You must stop your ears whenever you are asked to sign a treaty selling your home. A few more years and white men will be all around you. They have eyes on this land."
