Dieting... I'm sick of it.
I am happy with my body.... but I would like to drop quite a few pounds before puttin' on that swimsuit this summer.
I tried the atkins diet, I've tried the grapefruit thing, and nothing worked. I am getting myself into a stretching routine but I know I need to eat better as well.... but I can't cut out my soda. In that fact I am like a smoker. I am however trying to work on cutting out the junk. Anywho, I just wanted to know other ladies ideas about losing weight and what they have done to keep it off... or even know some good things to try. I am just sick of trying to get into a diet and then relapsing.

I can hear you there, Blue. No matter what I do, I cannot quit drinking caffeinated cola product. I am addicted. From what I can tell from your profile, you go to ASU? (I go to Oregon State.) I'm assuming, that ASU, like OSU, has a health/fitness connection service on campus, either through your student health services, or through the gym on campus.
Meeting with a nutritionist and a trainer is usually free for evaluations and so on simply because you pay for it in your student fees. Often times they can do things like measure your percentage of body fat and work up a sensible(and practical!) diet for you to follow as well as a fitness regimen. This is probably the most sensible way to go about losing weight without quitting. I know how hard it is because it's something I'm going through myself...I have to lose weight/exercise for the sake of my back. I've got posture problems that will probably only be solved with some weight loss. ![]() ![]()

I understand you too. I had tried all the diets when I had my Children but what works for me is watching calories.
For the past two months I have been limiting myself to 1000 calories or less per day. I do exercise a little but not a lot and just in that time I lost 24lbs. I am sure that I have lost even more now, but I have not been back to the DR to check and I refuse to own a scale! But try counting your calories...A Friend of mine goes to LA Weightloss and she told me a lot of the secrets to the diet and she has lost 30lbs. Basically it boils down to calories...So try it and if you want to know a meal plan, let me know and I will tell you what I eat in a day.

Watch your fat and sugar intake. Things that say they are "fat free" are really packed with sugar which can turn into fat.
Eat a lot of fruit, veggies, meats that are good are chicken and fish. Don't STOP eating. This can cause your metabolism to slow down. Instead eat lots of small healthy meals. |

I find that calorie counting is the only way for me to keep things under control.
That being said, I like to eat the same types of things every day so that I don't have to count calories all of the time. I try to keep my intake between 1500 and 2000 per day. If I want to lose a few pounds (and I do, for summer) I need to not go over 1500. Also, exercise is important. You MUST commit to 4 days a week at the very minimum and do something that gets your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes.

The thing that works best for me is to just eat healthy (yogurt, fruit, sandwhichs, salad, soup, etc.) without worrying about it too much. Make an effort to eat well, but don't kill yourself over it.
The key, more than food, is consistent exercise. As long as your working out, your body will metabolize food better, and you'll burn more calories. Not to mention, feel great, and its a wonderful stress reliever. ![]() Of course, above all, just relax! I know I'm guilty of getting caught in the diet whirlwind where you're never thin enough, and you'd be happy if you could juat lose that one more pound. We're all beautiful at any size, don't be ruled by a dress size. ![]()

The only thing that works consistently for me is smaller meals at regular intervals, no binge-and-starves.
I use a non-impact "robotic fitness" system (they stick you on various tables and machines move you), because my knees are shot from three years of high school soccer, but if I do that with the binge-and-starve system, I get fatter. Pre-pregnancy I maintained 140 lbs on a 5' 2" wide-framed body. I peaked during pregnancy at 211 lbs. Moving to 5 small meals a day dropped me 10 lbs the first week, and I've been consistently dropping 1-1.5 lbs per week, even while breast-feeding. I'm down to 165 now.

what do you mean by binge and starve, porsche? I tend to skip breakfast, and catch my "dinner" late in the evening, both based on time and hunger considerations... i just CAN'T eat before noon, earliest. sometimes, with school, that means no "breakfast" till 5 pm or later. I don't CHOOSE not to eat... it just ends up that way. :/ am I screwin' myself over, here?

Basically exactly what you're doing: not eating for 6-12 hours, then eating more than you would have had you eaten at decent intervals. You don't INTEND to eat more, you just do because your body want to be ready for the next starvation period.

In high school I would lose about 20 to 30 pounds every year when track season started... it makes a big difference right before bathing suit time
I'm at ASU now (in nc not arizona!) and I'm finding that I'm loosing weight just because I can't afford food anymore! good luck |

arg! so, how do you walk the line between smaller meals and snacking? because that is a HUGE danger. I mean, bread and cheese here, some pasta there, and a can of soup at the end and you turn around and are like "dear god, I've eaten tons today!" or I feel that way, anyway. :/

The 'binge-and-starve' thing slows down your metabolism. When you're not eating your system is winding down. If you eat constantly (but just a little each time) then it speeds back up. Not only will your metabolism burn fat, you'll also pack less of it on, since starvation-mode encourages "emergency storage".

What's worked for me, besides eating sensibly, is that a year ago, I started going to the YMCA for 5 days a week. They have a progam at the local one (perhaps its national) called their "Personal Fitness Program". Their motto is "In 12 weeks, you may not be able to leap tall buildings, but you'll be able to walk up the stairs of one."
You get a trainer that you meet with (all of mine have been real sweeties who are very understanding and upbeat and helpful) and we get our own room so we're not out with the "pumping iron" folks. It really motivated me, my bf and gf say they really see a difference, and I've started feeling a whole lot better, physically and mentally. Of course, before you do anything like that, you really need to check with your doctor. The Roo |

I did a fitness thing last year at school where they weighed us and did a body fat test and a fitness test. I had not exercised in a year due to a foot injury and I was looking to get back to some kind of working out again.
I found out that I had literally wasted years of exercising because I didn't really do that extra day and didn't pay enough attention to getting my heart rate up when I was exercising. By working out 4 days a week for 30 minutes with my heart rate up to speed I found it was much easier to lose weight and the result was that I improved my fitness and lost 14 lbs. Exercise is a big part of fitness and weight loss. And it makes you feel great. The best time of day is going out to the track and doing some walking or running. (I had to go to walking lately because my back is just sore all of the time when I run......the age thing. Keep in mind that you can always do something.)

A couple years ago when I was a bit on the chubby side I had a diet that was basically...one or two servings of fruits in the morning, anything but meat at lunch [but a reasonable serving of course], and at dinner I could have a serving of meat with whatever else. But then I basically had no snacks or very little. Saying this I have to mention that I eat mostly stir fry and rice, nothing with heavy sauces and creams and such so that's a factor too. I found that was a really healthy diet, it kept me full, it was still healthy, it tasted good, and it was really easy to stick to. It didn't work very fast perse [a month or so] but afterwards I could keep the weight off with no trouble.

i don't want to add further confusion to the plethora if information already posted here... but there is one thing that has really really worked for me over the past year... and i discovered it kind of by accident...
DRINK AT LEAST 4 LARGE BOTTLES OF WATER A DAY no lie... my husband and i each lost around 10 lbs, in 3-4 months, simply by drinking a lot of water. I did not change my eating habits... i was drinking the water to help my husband who was trying to kick his caffeine habit. it was a added bonus to have the weight come off effortlessly... give it a try... it certainly can't hurt... ![]() |

I don't ever really diet. I go for the excercise route. I feel better when I'm doing more than when I'm depraiving my body. Sometimes I do try to watch how many sweets I eat. I LOVE chocolete, Dark chocolete. I have been known to devour my unsweetened baking chocolete on a chocolete frenzy. Usually coincides with that time of the month of course. Excercise does the trick for me at least up until this point in life. While I was pregnant I gained 60 lbs. Partly water weight they said - which I believe since you couldn't see where my feet ended and my legs started and I'm normally right within my weight range. After that though through mostly exercise I got back down to my previous weight in about a year and a half. I'm about 5-10 pounds more than I used to be before kids right now but that's mostly because I'm sitting here to much. Gotta get out and get some of those springtime rays with the kids.

Gosh, nothing new to add I suppose...just rehashing what everyone has said....
I used to be addicted to soda as well....straight up, a 12 pack a day....I stopped drinking soda and lost 15 pounds....boom, gone, nearly overnight.... Also, those Brita Water Bottles....not the big ones for your fridge, the water bottle size....built in filter, fill it up anywhere, drink at least 3-4 a day....really helps you get all your water, mobilizes your fat, and helps you LOOSE water weight.... If you can't get weights or equipment to exercise, or ride a bike, or go to a gym, or *insert other time-consuming exercise activity here* just march infront of your tv for an hour....anything to get the heart rate up... SET GOALS! Those middle school health teachers weren't kidding....it really helps to have a clear goal in mind....not, "I'm going to loose 60 pounds in 3 months and look like nicole kidman" but "I'm going to exercise 3 times a week, and keep my calories to 1500 a day". Reward yourself when you reach those goals....a manicure, a new lipstick, a small shopping trip to Victoria Secret, a DVD you want....anything that makes you feel good about your progress.... Keep positive...I'm with you, girl.... ![]() m

I'm in the middle of a diet right now, and it's the first time I've ever been able to stick to anything. I like challenges, so I've limited my calories, and try to find the most filling, best tasting food I can for those calories. 100 calories of broccoli is a LOT compared to say, 100 calories of cake.
Portion control and counting calories are the things that have worked the best for me. I've lost 30 lbs now and have 30 more to go for my first goal. It hasn't been easy in the short term, but I agree with the clothes thing. I've lost all my college weight now, and am fitting back into my high school clothes (I'm a junior, and gained the freshman 15 AND the sophomore 15). I try to work out as much as I can, but that sometimes only amounts to 2 times a week due to school. |
