What's worked for me, besides eating sensibly, is that a year ago, I started going to the YMCA for 5 days a week. They have a progam at the local one (perhaps its national) called their "Personal Fitness Program". Their motto is "In 12 weeks, you may not be able to leap tall buildings, but you'll be able to walk up the stairs of one."
You get a trainer that you meet with (all of mine have been real sweeties who are very understanding and upbeat and helpful) and we get our own room so we're not out with the "pumping iron" folks.
It really motivated me, my bf and gf say they really see a difference, and I've started feeling a whole lot better, physically and mentally.
Of course, before you do anything like that, you really need to check with your doctor.
