Booray 04-04-2004 04:27 PM

Figured I'd go ahead and post one instead of waiting.

Question: Out of the 5 members of The Band, 4 of them (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson) were born in Ontario, Canada. Levon Helm was the only one who wasn't. What state was he born and raised in and got his start with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks in?

pan6467 04-04-2004 09:52 PM

Sorry been a busy weekend The answer was the Who and Shel Talmy was the producer

jay-g 04-04-2004 10:12 PM

I have no idea, I do know that he was the drummer/lead singer.
The Last Waltz is a pretty cool video if you've never seen it.

Booray 04-05-2004 05:05 PM

I guess it's been over 24 hours, so it looks like a stumper. It was Arkansas.

Quote:

He actually traded off lead vocals from song to song with Richard Manuel and Rick Danko. I think The Last Waltz was a great concert and have always enjoyed watching it, but I'd always been struck by how much the cameras focused most of their attention on Robbie Robertson, even though he didn't sing lead on anything, and stayed on him when other instruments/members should've been the focus for certain parts of certain songs. Apparently Levon's recent book about The Band talked about how much he hated The Last Waltz and how Scorsese made Robertson the focal point of the whole thing since he pretty much worshipped him. Apparently, Robertson's microphone wasn't even turned on the whole time, to avoid having his backing vocals mess up the sound.

New question is up in the air for anyone to ask.

Sion 04-05-2004 05:24 PM

What British actor appears in both the film version of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"?

God of Thunder 04-05-2004 05:34 PM

I'm going to guess Bob Hoskins

Sion 04-05-2004 06:58 PM

youd be guessing right GoT

God of Thunder 04-06-2004 06:07 AM

Should be an easy one.

Current Van Halen vocalist (yes he's back!!) Sammy Hagar was lead singer for what other band before going solo?

Sion 04-06-2004 12:04 PM

yes, that is an easy one GoT. that band was called Montrose, after guitar player Ronnie Montrose. damned good band too.

ok, next question: in the credits of the film version of The Wall, there is a listing of additional musicians (other than Floyd members) who contributed to the making of the music. one of these people formed half of a pop duo that had some hits in the 70s, to include "Do that to me one more time" and "Love will keep us together". name her.

ps. can you tell I watched that film over the weekend?

perripken 04-06-2004 01:01 PM

Toni Tenille,
Cool, now I can ask that Who's next question!
What is the humorous thing about the Who's next album cover?
At least humorous to me!

God of Thunder 04-06-2004 01:33 PM

Ummmm, they're pissing on a building????

perripken 04-06-2004 01:50 PM

close enough oh thunderous one! They're walking away from a wall they just pissed on ( you can see the wet spots running down the wall) hence the album name "Who's next?"
Your question GOT!

God of Thunder 04-07-2004 03:26 AM

To stick with the subject

What was originally proposed to be the cover of "Who's Next"?

That one was even funnier, but the censors didn't have a sense of humor then.

perripken 04-07-2004 12:17 PM

The original cover was supposed to be Keith Moon dressed in a teddy with a whip in his hand, I believe. Who's next?

God of Thunder 04-07-2004 02:20 PM

Yes, that would have been much funnier. I wish I could see it, but it never made it to production.

Your up

perripken 04-07-2004 02:24 PM

Ok, name game-
Who is Fred Bulsara?

God of Thunder 04-08-2004 07:43 AM

Can't believe no one has jumped on this one.

He is the lover of "Fat Bottomed Girls" and a "Prince of the Universe". He believes in a "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and that "Too Much Love Will Kill You".

He is ----- Freddie Mercury

May he rest in peace.

Who produced and played on Eric Clapton's 1985 album "Behind the Sun"?

perripken 04-08-2004 01:20 PM

I'm gonna guess George Harrison. Seems to me I remember that Eric was doing George's wife, wasn't that Layla? And I remember them still being friends and working together, and that struck me kinda funny! I'm not going to put up a new question 'cause I'm not sure on this one.

perripken 04-08-2004 01:25 PM

Well.. I couldn't wait, and it's a good thing I didn't put a new question up, cause I think I'm wrong. George isn't mentioned on that album, but there is an artist mentioned that GOT must be referring to.

God of Thunder 04-08-2004 03:09 PM

George Harrison is a very good guess given the friendship the two of them had. I figured it might throw some guesses that way, but as you pointed out, he was not on that album.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure George and Eric ever colaborated on one of Eric's albums. I think it was just Beatles and George solo material where the two hooked up.

The artist in question on "Behind the Sun" is a drummer. (No it's not Ringo). Eric worked with him more than once, but this one was the first time.

perripken 04-08-2004 04:09 PM

Then yes, it is indeed the artist I was thinking of, but I googled for what I thought was my correct answer and saw the other artist so, I'm out!
ALL MUSIC TRIVIA FOLKS! Have a great holiday, I'm going down to my camp for 4 wheelin fun and fishing and have no internet down there, so, PEACE OUT!

I think I need to hold out longer and maybe grovel for hints before I look up answers because I think that hint may have given it to me, but I already found the answer on allmusic.com.

Sounds like a good time! Have a blast

God of Thunder 04-08-2004 06:15 PM

See, it's all aout looking at the hints and going with your gut feeling on it. Just take a guess, you might be right.

Sion 04-08-2004 08:41 PM

im gonna guess Phil Collins

Sion 04-09-2004 12:40 AM

I did an AMG check and found out I was correct.

so, without further ado, the next question is:

How many beards are in ZZTop?

kl0pper 04-09-2004 04:12 AM

2

God of Thunder 04-09-2004 04:24 AM

3 actually.

Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons each have on on their face, and Frank has one as his last name.

And yes, it was Phil Collins who produced Eric's album.

Back to The Who. Following Keith Moon's death, The Who hired drummer Kenny Jones as his replacement. What band did Kenny come from?

God of Thunder 04-09-2004 05:55 PM

No takers so far??

OK, Rod Stewart also came from this band.

Did that help anyone? I think I saw a few light bulbs go on that time.

Booray 04-09-2004 06:19 PM

The Jeff Beck Group?

Sion 04-09-2004 08:33 PM

The Faces (or was it the Small Faces)? If I remember correctly, they were originally called the Small Faces, but later dropped the word "small" and were thereafter known as the Faces.

Yes, they dropped the "Small" when Steve Marriot left.

Good work, you're up Sion.

Sion 04-10-2004 10:31 AM

Speaking of Steve Marriot, he was once in another band with a guitarist who would later go on to have one of the best selling live albums of all time. What was the name of the band they were in? Bonus points for naming the guitarist and the live album.

Booray 04-10-2004 12:37 PM

Just a guess based on the best selling live album mention:

Humble Pie. Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive?

Booray 04-10-2004 12:58 PM

Just checked and saw that I was right. Can't think of a good question, so this one might be kind of easy:

What country outlaw was the bass player for Buddy Holly's band the Crickets during Holly's last tour and ended up giving up his seat on the tragic plane ride to the Big Bopper, who was suffering from a cold?

God of Thunder 04-10-2004 05:28 PM

That was Waylon Jennings.

OK lets see who can come up with this one.

Comedian Harland Williams' cousin is the keyboard player for what Canadian band?

Booray 04-10-2004 05:39 PM

I know who Harland Williams is, but have no clue on this, so I'll just guess the Tragically Hip

God of Thunder 04-11-2004 05:29 AM

No not the tragically hip, think a little more mainstream, especially in the US.

Hint. Harland was in one of their videos.

Booray 04-11-2004 04:39 PM

Barenaked Ladies?

God of Thunder 04-11-2004 04:59 PM

That's the group.

Harland's cousin is Kevin Hearn

Booray 04-11-2004 05:31 PM

Anyone who wants to ask a question, go ahead. I'm blanking out.

KWSN 04-11-2004 05:49 PM

OK, here's one...

Anyone who watches MTV2 will know that annoying asshole Jesse who hosts the rock countdown. Who's Jesse's father?

God of Thunder 04-12-2004 04:16 AM

Comcast pulled that channel over a year ago, so no clue here.

God of Thunder 04-12-2004 05:02 PM

Looks like a stumper KWSN.

Good job.

Now provide us with another.

Sion 04-12-2004 07:36 PM

since it was a stumper, I went ahead and googled the answer. it turns out that Jesse Blaze Snider (yes thats really his legal middle name) is the son of none other than Dee Snider of Twisted Sister.

no wonder he's an asshole, eh?

still need a question from KWSN

God of Thunder 04-13-2004 09:41 AM

Time to kick start this thing again.

Lets see who knows their Beatles.

It was common practice for EMI to release Beatles albums in the US with different song lists. Sometimes they released a different album altogether here in the states.

This all changed with what album? (and all of those that followed.)

Booray 04-13-2004 11:22 AM

No clue, but I'll guess Revolver

sherpahigh 04-13-2004 11:24 AM

I wanna say Rubber Soul or Revolver. I was always taught to go with your first instinct so I'm going with Revolver.

sherpahigh 04-13-2004 11:24 AM

haha, missed booray right ahead of me. same album too. damn.

God of Thunder 04-13-2004 12:39 PM

S'ok sherpahigh, neither one of your are correct.

KWSN 04-13-2004 02:54 PM

the final beatles album to be butchered for US release by EMI was revolver, and the first to be released as the same album in both the US and the UK was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

...and sorry about not providing another question for my last one, i'm slow sometimes :P

That's alright, now is your chance to redeem yourself since you answered correctly.

KWSN 04-13-2004 09:48 PM

alright then...

the beatles recorded a song during the takes for one of their earliest albums but it never got released in the final cut of the LP. however, it DID show up on their FINAL album, years later. name the track.

God of Thunder 04-15-2004 04:18 AM

I'm gonna guess "Across the Universe" but I think that was recorded during the "Yellow Submarine" sessions.

iamtheone 04-15-2004 04:25 AM

It's All Too Much

KWSN 04-15-2004 11:19 AM

Here's a hint...

It was going to be on their next album after Let it Be (which was to be called "Get Back"... no, not Get Back) but that album was never released.

perripken 04-15-2004 02:24 PM

This question is officially a stumper, we need the answer and a new question KWSN.

KWSN 04-15-2004 07:56 PM

the answer is One After 909. Recorded numerous times in pre-revolver, pre-rubber soul-era records, but never released on an album until Let it Be, their final album.

Next question:

name 2 beatles #1 singles that were never included on one of their major albums.

Sion 04-15-2004 09:56 PM

irrelevent to the question. posted for the benefit of GoT:

http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_1_137.gif

God of Thunder 04-16-2004 07:41 AM

Thanks for that , Sion. I downloaded it.

As for the question at hand, I had to turn to the person I feel knows almost as much about the Beatles as warrrreagl, my wife.

First she wants more clarification as to what you mean by "major album". I felt that it meant any album that wasn't a compilation, such as 1. Including that would void the question, since it contained all of their #1 hits.

Based on that, she picked "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and "All You Need is Love" despite the fact the second one was on Yellow Submarine.

KWSN 04-16-2004 11:13 AM

and those two are great choices.

Paperback Writer would have also been acceptable.

and yes, any album that was not a compilation (and Yellow Submarine was not really an album so much as a soundtrack) is what i meant by a "major album." Sorry about that.

Your go, GoT

God of Thunder 04-16-2004 04:22 PM

Well, you got both of us. We both swore that "Paperback Writer" was on Revolver, but were wrong.

The Goddess of Thunder now wishes to ask this question:

Saturday Night Live star Maya Rudolph has a famous singer for a mom.

Who is she?

Bonus points if you can name her famous hit.

tkkfan 04-16-2004 04:37 PM

Minnie Riperton
Lovin' You

What was the name of Frank Zappa's first band?

I hope this hasn't been asked yet.. I didn't see it

perripken 04-16-2004 04:56 PM

As far as I know it was the Mothers of Invention, but I'm not sure if he was in a band before that.

tkkfan 04-16-2004 05:40 PM

nope

perripken 04-16-2004 06:11 PM

nope he wasn't in another band before that or nope as in my answer was wrong?

tkkfan 04-16-2004 06:40 PM

nope yer answer is wrong

Sion 04-16-2004 09:12 PM

"What was the name of Frank Zappa's first band?"

as in the very first band he was ever in? or the first band he ever recorded/released anything with?

tkkfan 04-16-2004 09:52 PM

The first band he was ever in

KWSN 04-17-2004 08:28 AM

a-HA! I know this one.....

the Soul Giants

He was fired from the band for playing the cymbals too much

and he was only 16

Sion 04-17-2004 11:00 PM

I think we can officially call it a stumper now.

what was the name of the band?

and give us another question.

tkkfan 04-18-2004 08:29 AM

The Ramblers - 1955/56 - Frank Zappa drums, it was an R&B band.

Now for a 2 part question(2 parts cause these are really good...I think the second one is easy too)

1) what was Black Sabbath's original name? (hint: its not what you think it is)

2) What album title was changed for America? (hint: the album art was not changed)

KWSN 04-18-2004 08:40 AM

They were originally called Polka Tulk (The Polka Tulk Blues Company in full), when they were a Jazz-Blues band, and later they renamed themselves Earth.

The album Paranoid was originally going to be entitled "War Pigs," but was changed due to the Vietnam War.

You win..I thought those were a little easy. Not many ppl knew about Polka Tulk tho.

KWSN 04-18-2004 12:51 PM

I knew about Polka Tulk for a while... I'm a big Sabbath fan myself.

next question (a similarly simple Sabbath question):

Something happened to Tony Iommi that impaired his ability to play the guitar but he was inspired to keep playing by the story of another famous guitar player.

Tell me what happened to Tony, and who he got his inspiration from.

God of Thunder 04-18-2004 05:38 PM

Tony lost a finger, but I'm not sure who inspired him to continue

Booray 04-18-2004 06:23 PM

Since GOT's answer is apparently right (I think I now remember hearing he'd lost his finger at some point, but didn't recall that until the answer was given), I'm guessing his inspiration might've been Jerry Garcia. He lost the middle finger on his right hand when he was four when his older brother chopped it off with an axe while they were splitting wood.

KWSN 04-18-2004 06:50 PM

close, but the Dead werent really at the height of their popularity until after this incident. This was when Tony was a teenager, well before Sabbath started for real.

HINT: The finger thing is correct, Tony lost part of his in a shop accident. The guitarist who inspired him was a blues guitarist from the early 20th century, and the guitarist in question was badly burned.

God of Thunder 04-19-2004 04:11 AM

Given the clues, I still have no idea.

Like I said earlier, the only part I knew was that Tony had lost a finger (or at least part of it).

rideough 04-19-2004 04:42 AM

Django Reinhardt!!!!!!!

weee i win!

KWSN 04-19-2004 11:28 AM

Rideough, that is correct.

Your go.

Sion 04-19-2004 07:40 PM

/me: impatiently waiting around with two REALLY good questions to ask

rideough 04-20-2004 02:17 AM

Who sold Jimmy Page his "number #1" Les Paul?

Sion 04-20-2004 08:45 AM

just a wild guess: Jeff Beck

sherpahigh 04-20-2004 09:54 AM

Also a guess... Eric Clapton

KWSN 04-20-2004 11:05 AM

Another guess.......... les paul?

perripken 04-20-2004 11:09 AM

another guess, BB King

rideough 04-21-2004 03:48 AM

*hint* Think about the Eagles

God of Thunder 04-21-2004 04:07 AM

My guess is Joe Walsh then.

Booray 04-21-2004 08:51 AM

Since GoT guessed Walsh, I'll throw Glenn Frey in as my guess

perripken 04-21-2004 12:54 PM

Rideough, when you threw your hint in, this was already a stumper. We need a new question and an answer to this one.

Booray 04-21-2004 04:22 PM

Looked it up and GoT got it right. It was Walsh.

God of Thunder 04-21-2004 04:50 PM

pretty good for a guess.

Next question...probably easy enough.

Sheryl Crow's current hit "The First Cut is the Deepest" was originally written by what artist?

Sion 04-21-2004 08:08 PM

Bryan Adams, lol

rideough 04-22-2004 02:04 AM

GoT is right with Walsh.
