Booray 03-09-2004 09:10 PM

You nailed it.

Sion 03-09-2004 09:49 PM

cool. great hint, btw.

ok, on to my question:

name the album (released in 1987 by a quartet from the British Isles) that was the first cd to go platinum (i.e. sell a million or more copies).

Booray 03-10-2004 11:32 AM

I have no clue on this one

God of Thunder 03-10-2004 12:04 PM

Me neither. I'm trying to think what was popular in 1987. I think he is trying to trick us a little by saying "British Isles". He thinks by doing that, we'll think England.

Duran Duran had five members, so, they're out.

I'm going out on a limb and by the clues, I'm going to say U2's Joshua Tree.

Booray 03-10-2004 12:21 PM

I think you might be right.

pan6467 03-10-2004 06:32 PM

I thought Joshua Tree was released earlier than that. But for the CD it's possible.

The Police were a trio and the Pogues never sold that many.

I'd say Hysteria by Def Leppard but I think they have 5.

I'll go with the chance that Def Leppard had only 4. And say Hysteria.

Sion 03-10-2004 09:34 PM

GoT is correct. It was U2's Joshua Tree.

yer question oh Deity of Lightning Noise...

Sion 03-10-2004 09:35 PM

oh and btw, I was NOT trying to trick anyone. Just figured if I had said a quartet from Ireland, it would have been TOO obvious.

God of Thunder 03-11-2004 04:27 AM

Yes, the Irish hint would have been too obvious. Good phrasing though, it made me think.

Also Def Leppard does have 5 members.

OK, my question.

Roberta Flack's 1973 hit "Killing Me Softly With His Song" was written about which singer/songwriter?

Sion 03-11-2004 09:51 AM

good question GoT.

I've no idea, but am gonna take a wild guess anyway:

Elton John

God of Thunder 03-11-2004 11:43 AM

That is a good guess, but no.

He's an American artist who had only one really big hit. Madonna did a reeallllllly bad re-make of it recently.

sherpahigh 03-11-2004 11:44 AM

I remember hearing about this somewhere, maybe I read it, but I believe the answer is Don Mclean.

God of Thunder 03-11-2004 01:28 PM

You believe correctly.

You're question sherpahigh

sherpahigh 03-11-2004 03:18 PM

Alright, how about some Springsteen trivia.

What is the name of the bar in Jersey that Springsteen was known for showing up and playing suprise gigs?

God of Thunder 03-11-2004 05:10 PM

Ohhhh Damn!! I knew that at one time.

Ahhhhhhh. Getting old and losing your memory sucks.

What were we talking about??

perripken 03-11-2004 08:19 PM

I'm pretty sure that would be the "Stone Pony" in Asbury Park.
If this is correct, and Sherpahigh confirms this, someone else will have to take the next question, that is if it's confirmed before 4 pm tomorrow (Friday) I don't have internet at home anymore and can only check it at work. BTW- Bruce was the greatest concert I have ever seen. He played 4 1/2 hours straight.

sherpahigh 03-11-2004 09:54 PM

perripken is correct.

Easy to understand how Bruce could be the greatest concert you've ever seen. I myself went to two of his shows last April and they were both amazing. Rank right up there with the best shows I've ever seen. I can only imagine what it must have been like to see him years ago.

Anyway, as perripken said, it's someone elses question now. The floor is open.

Booray 03-11-2004 10:29 PM

Question: What is the correct pronunciation of Rush drummer Neil Peart's last name?

I ask because I've heard it pronounced about 4 or 5 different ways over the years, and I finally looked it up about a year ago to find the definitive answer.

Sion 03-11-2004 10:32 PM

here is a REALLY easy one, offered for the sole purpose of getting some new blood in here with new questions:

what Beatle was knighted by the Queen of England on this date (March 11) in 1997?

Sion 03-11-2004 10:34 PM

doh, Booray posted while I was typing my question.

anyway, I think the correct answer to his question is peert. (long e)

Booray 03-11-2004 10:43 PM

You got it.

I think I know the answer to yours, but we'll let somone else try.

There is a radio promo that plays on a local station here recorded by the man himself and that is the way he pronounces it.

Sion 03-12-2004 06:38 AM

reminder: the current question is

what Beatle was knighted by the Queen of England on this date (March 11) in 1997?

cmon people, you got a one in three chance of getting this one.

God of Thunder 03-12-2004 07:12 AM

I know the answer, but at your request am holding out to get some new blood in.

Sion 03-12-2004 10:21 AM

thats commendable, but not entirely necessary. your call, of course, however. suggestion: you might want to wait until it reaches stumper status, then go ahead and answer, followed with your own question.

God of Thunder 03-12-2004 10:28 AM

I will wait.

But please, anyone who is reading this, just take a guess. As we mentioned, it's NOT John Lennon. He's dead.

That leaves Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison (who was alive at the time).

Why do I feel like this is an episode of Celebrity Jeopardy from SNL?

Booray 03-12-2004 10:41 AM

Answer: The Beatles White album was this color

Now that sounds like a celebrity Jeopardy answer?!?!?!

perripken 03-12-2004 01:50 PM

Wasn't it Paul?

God of Thunder 03-12-2004 05:02 PM

Well since Ringo hasn't done anything knight-worthy that leaves George and Paul.

Yes it was Sir Paul.

You're up perripken

ToolBag 03-12-2004 05:14 PM

What are the real names of Ozzy, Tony, and Geezer from Black Sabbat?

perripken 03-12-2004 05:25 PM

I will let ToolBag's question stand since I've never seen him here. Typically ToolBag, the person who answered the question correctly asks the next question. Welcome to the thread. Being a huge Sabbath fan, I know the answer, but will let it go in hopes that we get more new blood in here!

God of Thunder 03-12-2004 05:26 PM

I only know the real name of Ozzy, so you got me stumped.

And as perripken said, welcome to the thread.

ToolBag 03-12-2004 05:33 PM

yes, this is my first time here and I am sorry for the interuption. Well good luck on the question anyway. I hope to see some good ones myself.

ToolBag 03-12-2004 05:35 PM

Oh, and are there any other rules besides the one mentioned before?

God of Thunder 03-12-2004 05:57 PM

Perripken, the thread originator declared the rules to be this:

An unanswered question has 24 hours before it is deemed a stumper. At that point, the asker will ask another question (hopefully a little easier)
An answered question has 12 hours to be confirmed. If you are certain you have the question correct, go ahead and ask a new question to move this thing along.
On the same lines, after a question has been confirmed correct, the person who answers it has 12 hours from that point to ask a new one. If that doesn't happen, the answer is nullified and the person who asked the last question, asks a new one.

perripken 03-12-2004 06:08 PM

No problem ToolBag, it's great to see new people in here!
The more people we have, the more diverse the questions!
If it were just myself and the God of Thunder in here, it would be overloaded with Styx and Kiss trivia- heh heh heh!

God of Thunder 03-12-2004 06:36 PM

Actually, I think I've asked all of the KISS questions I know. So we need new questions.

is this a stumper yet? I can't think of them at the moment, but I did know this at one point in time.

ToolBag 03-13-2004 03:24 PM

I dont know if I should consider this a stumper yet or not. I will give a clue, which is if anyone has a viynl copy of the self titled album, you may find some hints of the real names. Also not, this may also be available on some of the imported versions of the cd version.

God of Thunder 03-13-2004 03:27 PM

I'll give one away. I know that Ozzy's real name is John Osbourne. Now all someone has to do is come up with the other two.

I think we can pretty musch declare this a stumper though. Good job for your first post.

ToolBag 03-14-2004 09:57 AM

ok, the real names are: Ozzy = John Osbourne, Terence = Geezer and Tony = Frank.

ToolBag 03-14-2004 10:01 AM

Here is another one from a closer to my time.

This band was originally named Sharp Young Men.

Sion 03-14-2004 10:11 AM

wild guess: Fine Young Canibals

rideough 03-14-2004 12:37 PM

Faith no more!!!!!!!!!

ToolBag 03-14-2004 02:46 PM

Wow, impressive rideogh! That would be correct!

rideough 03-14-2004 03:56 PM

k..k.. here's another cool question about Faith No More...

Former guitarist Jim Martin was in a band with the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton...what was the name of that band?

notaneel 03-14-2004 11:44 PM

EZ Street

If I'm right...hmm...my question is...indie rock guru Steve Albini helped engineer what Guided By Voices album?

rideough 03-15-2004 04:46 AM

nope sorry wrong answer!

God of Thunder 03-15-2004 02:21 PM

Looks like we may have another stumper.

Rideough, you're up again.

perripken 03-15-2004 03:24 PM

What was the answer?

lalalapi 03-15-2004 11:51 PM

Agents of Misfortune?

God of Thunder 03-16-2004 04:39 AM

We need an answer and a new question, rideough. If not, I'll let notaneel's question stand.

God of Thunder 03-16-2004 10:37 AM

I'm making a ruling and letting notaneel's question go through, since we have not heard from rideough.

This is now the current question open for anyone to answer.

perripken 03-16-2004 02:08 PM

Thanks for keeping an eye on things Thunder, after much deliberation, my wife and I decided to keep our high speed service, but now I have some adware problems that are really slowing me down at home. I've basically only been checking in at work. I'll be back, though!

God of Thunder 03-16-2004 02:46 PM

Glad to here you're sticking around. Check the computer forum for some tips on removing the adware. There are several very good tools listed in there.

God of Thunder 03-17-2004 04:04 PM

OK either we have 2 stumpers in a row, or no one feels like participating anymore.

By the rules, notaneel is up again. If a new question isn't asked, I open it up to perripken.

pan6467 03-17-2004 05:14 PM

I'm here just haven't a clue as to the answers....lol

God of Thunder 03-17-2004 07:11 PM

I'm hoping that's the case with most people. Because truthfully I was stumped by both of em too.

perripken 03-17-2004 07:51 PM

Ok guys, you asked for it! I'm going to give the GOT a taste of his own medicine. Let's see how good he is with his KISS trivia...
actually he should know this one. What was the symbol that Vinnie Vincent had painted on his face and what was so significant about it? hmmmmm.....

Sion 03-17-2004 09:54 PM

oh yes...Vinnie Vincent...the blackest sheep in the Kiss flock. The one member that most hardcore Kiss fans would rather forget.

I know half of the answer. I know what his makeup was...but since I dont know what the significance (to him or Kiss) was, Im gonna hold off answering. for now anyway.

pan6467 03-17-2004 10:46 PM

I know 2 things make that 3 about Vinnie.

1) he played guitar for Billy Idol (Gen X), KISS and David Lee Roth

2) Gene Simmons described him as the most self destructive person he ever met (which says alot considering Gene also worked with Peter and Ace)

3) he had the guitar solo to TOP GUN'S theme and that theme ROCKS.

God of Thunder 03-18-2004 07:02 AM

Sorry pan, but

1.) Vinnie never played with Roth. After leaving KISS, he formed the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. He never played with Idol or in Generation X either.

2.) I agree with Gene's description of him.

3.) He is not the one playing the guitar in "Danger Zone". I don't know for certain who it is, but it wasn't Vincent.

As for perripken's question - Vinnie wore an "Ankh" and assumed the identity of "The Egyptian Warrior". I'm not sure of the significance of it unless he had egyptian roots. He was born in Conneticut.

pan6467 03-18-2004 09:22 AM

Not Danger Zone GOT, the music where Tom Cruise is on the boat and looking out holding Goose's dogtags, that bit of music look on the soundtrack it says it's the theme. He plays the guitar and the other guy plays the piano part. I thought it was Vinnie, it is in fact Steve Stevens.

Coulda swore he played for both Idol and DLR (for one or 2 songs not a touring member). I stand corrected, it was Steve Stevens that played with them.

For some reason I always confuse the 2. Sorry.

pan6467 03-18-2004 09:22 AM

Danger Zone by the way is Kenny Loggins and his band.

God of Thunder 03-18-2004 09:31 AM

Yes Steve Stevens played with Idol, but not with Gen X and he never played with Roth, That was Steve Vai.

But, all of that is beside the point, the current question had to do with Vinnie Vincent and I'm not sure if I satisfied all of perrpken's requirements for the answer, so I will wait for his input before moving on.

perripken 03-18-2004 03:37 PM

Since I kinda made a ruling on multiple part questions, I'm gonna give it to the thunderous one. I was looking for Ankh- which actually is the egyptian symol for life. The second part of the question was that Vinnie was the first and only Kiss member to have no makeup covering both eyes, other than eyeliner. The floor is your GOT!

God of Thunder 03-18-2004 05:52 PM

You know I almost put something in my reply about it not covering the eyes, but I didn't think it was relevant to the question. Oh well, I guess I didn't interpret it right.

Since we're on the subject of Vinnie Vincent. As I mentioned earlier, Vinnie formed the Invasion after he left KISS.

The lead singer and bass player left the Invasion after two albums to form what band?

(hint: I didn't mention the lead singer's name because that would have given it away.)

Sion 03-18-2004 10:16 PM

I had to google this, as I didnt know it offhand. VERY interesting. not only did the guy in GoT's question sing for the Invasion, but also the former singer of another BIG 80's band. except this other guy wasnt the one singing when they were big.

do you know what Im talking about GoT?

God of Thunder 03-19-2004 04:26 AM

Yes, it is the band I'm looking for.

God of Thunder 03-19-2004 09:47 AM

Well, it looks like it is hint time.

The bass player that left the Invasion was Dana Strum, the lead singer's first name was Mark. His last name was the name of the new band they formed.

So what band was formed by former Vinnie Vincent Invasion members Dana Strum and Mark _________? <----fill in that blank to get the new band's name.

Derwood 03-19-2004 10:20 AM

Slaughter?

God of Thunder 03-19-2004 11:15 AM

Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding. We have a winner!!!!

It just proves that Vinnie was indeed hard to work with when KISS fired him and then members of his own band then left to form a new one.

Your turn Derwood.

Derwood 03-19-2004 12:17 PM

That was the biggest pull out of my ass answer of all time. It was literally just the first thing that came to my head, and none of the clues had anything to do with it except that it was the singer's last name.

Here's a question that you won't know if you stopped listening to new music in 1977:

Name 3 bands that Al Jourgensen has been a member of.

perripken 03-19-2004 12:48 PM

Wow, never knew that! Slaughter was one of my fav's in the big hair band era! That's why I love this forum, ya learn something new every day!

perripken 03-19-2004 12:49 PM

BTW Derwood, never heard of Al Jourgenson- I'll have to google!

Derwood 03-19-2004 02:07 PM

Jourgensen had many bands under Chicago's Wax Trax label.....

God of Thunder 03-19-2004 02:23 PM

Never heard of him either, maybe that will bring some new blood into the thread.

GuttersnipeXL 03-19-2004 02:52 PM

He is/was the frontman for Ministry and The Revolting Cocks....I'm at a loss for the third....I'll guess, Thrill Kill Kult???

Derwood 03-19-2004 09:29 PM

2 out of 3...pretty good. Thrill Kill Kult is incorrect, but right genre. I might have to give this one to you cuz it's a tough one.

Other acceptable answers are 1000 Homo DJ's, Pailhead, Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters, and others.

But we'll move on. It's Guttersnipe's question.

Sion 03-19-2004 09:43 PM

GoT, now that your Vinnie Vincent/Slaughter question has been answered, do you know who ELSE sang for the Invasion who was once part of a band that was BIG in the 80s (though not the singer who took them to the big time)?

note: this is NOT the current question, just a bit of side discussion. Guttersnipe is up to bat.

Sion 03-20-2004 04:42 PM

since its been over 24 hours that we've been waiting on Guttersnipe, Im gonna jump in with a question of my own. Just to keep things moving.

name the band, featuring Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Nile Rodgers and Robert Plant, that recorded a one-off album of classic R&B covers back in the mid 80s.

Booray 03-20-2004 06:12 PM

The Honeydrippers! The only thing I remember is the cover of Sea of Love with Plant's distinctive vocals.

God of Thunder 03-20-2004 07:04 PM

Not until I looked it up. You are referring to Robert Fleischman who sang briefly for Journey. I was only aware of Mark Slaughter. I bought the first Invasion album, but quit caring about them once Mark and Dana left.

Good stumper for me Sion, I owe you a beer.

Back to the current question, I believe Booray is correct.

Sion 03-20-2004 08:05 PM

Booray is indeed correct.

Booray 03-20-2004 08:38 PM

Good question!

Here's a little background before my question (in case you're not familiar with the musician who the question regards). Sorry if it's a bit long-winded (or if you're already familiar with him), but I have the utmost respect for the man and figured I'd ramble for a minute:

One of my favorite guitarists (and vocalists for that matter), Warren Haynes, started playing for the Allman Brothers in 1989, forming his side project, Gov't Mule, with Allman bassist Allen Woody in '94, and then left the Allmans in '97 with Woody to pursue Gov't Mule full time. In '99, he started splitting time between Mule and Phil & Friends (one of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh's post-Dead groups).

After Woody's death in August of 2000, Warren took a few weeks off and then, after organizing a benefit concert in Woody's honor with the Allmans, the Black Crowes, Phil & Friends, and Gov't Mule (with bassists from those bands and also a couple of guests taking over bass duties for Mule), immediately jumped back on the road with Phil & Friends and continued playing through the end of the year with them, with Mule drummer Matt Abts for a few acoustic duo dates, and at a few other various benefit shows with Mule with more guest bassists filling in.

In 2001, he jumped back out on the road with Phil in February, rejoined the Allmans on the road in mid-March, and started touring with Mule at the end of March. He toured relentlessly with all three bands through September '02, when he left Phil & Friends. Since then, he's been splitting time with "only" two full time jobs with the Allmans and Mule, popping up for various solo, guest, and benefit appearances here and there.

http://www.jambands.com/eyecandy/road/photo12t.jpg

So, on to the question (finally, I know):
Warren is obviously a blue collar musician who loves to work and can do his job well (as evidenced by his ability to master the enormous back catalog of music by the Allmans and the Dead, which is a definite necessity since they don't come out just playing a "greatest hits" concert every show, instead, switching up setlists every night). Before he started playing with the Allmans in '89, Warren got his start playing for a blue collar country musician from '80 to '84. Who was he?

Booray 03-21-2004 06:56 AM

Hint: The country musician's last name is three letters long

Booray 03-21-2004 07:11 PM

Don't know if everyone was just stumped or what, but it's been about 24 hours so I'll post the answer:

David Allen Coe

If it's my turn again, I pass. I got nuthin'.

Sion 03-21-2004 09:49 PM

"I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck,
She got runned over by a danged ol' train"

the song that this verse is from was immortalized by David Allen Coe on a live album. But the song was not written by him, but rather by a good friend of his.

name the song and the artist who wrote it.

tritium 03-21-2004 10:56 PM

Steve Goodman wrote it and it's called "you never called me by my name"

New Question: These lyrics are from what song, and by which artist?

"Early birds and all-nighters,
And the veterans talk about their battle scars."

Its easy, so don't beat yourself up looking for the answer.

iamtheone 03-22-2004 06:50 AM

What is.... David Allen Coe

God of Thunder 03-22-2004 07:50 AM

That question has already been answered iamtheone.

The current question is

Looks we might have another stumper. Or it least it will be sometime after I go to bed. So tritium, you may be up again.

Sion 03-22-2004 08:30 PM

im gonna guess that Bruce Springsteen, but damned if I know what song

tritium 03-22-2004 09:17 PM

Toby Keith: I love this bar

New question: What was Glenn Miller's signature instrument?

mml 03-22-2004 10:41 PM

I am fairly certain that Glenn Miller's signature instument was the trombone.

kulrblind 03-23-2004 06:13 AM

"Glenn Miller's signature instrument" question:

I thought it was the clarinet.

edit: google tells me it's not the clarinet. methinks mml is right on this one.

Sion 03-23-2004 10:18 PM

assuming that mml is correct, we need a question from him/her.

if not, then its a stumper and we need a new one from tritium.

God of Thunder 03-24-2004 06:22 AM

mml is correct.

perripken 03-24-2004 02:01 PM

well kids, it looks like it's been well over 24 hrs since mml's correct answer. Since I'm not in here as much as I used to be, I have a relatively easy question that I've wanted to ask so here goes.
At the end of the Doors song "Touch me", they say a little phrase from a commercial during that era. What is the phrase?
