Music Trivia

How about a music trivia thread?
Answer it right, and you ask the next question.
I'll start-

Journey trivia
A) Members Neil Schon and Greg Rolie were in what famous guitar player's band before Journey.

B) After Greg Rolie quit the band, Jonathan Caine joined. What band was he in before Journey.

Good luck

perripken 09-11-2003 04:37 AM

Here are some hints for the trivia questions

A) The guitar players band is also his last name

B) John Waite was the lead singer in the band that Jonathan Caine came from

*as the music from Jeopardy plays in the background*

perripken 09-11-2003 07:17 AM

...man.....do I have to give more clues? Maybe you guys are all just to young for me

Jdoe 09-11-2003 07:35 AM

A) Santana
B) Babys

New Question:

I'll keep in line with the segue stuff, so Santana...One of Santana's big songs, "Black Magic Woman" was actually written and recorded by another group before him that later became famous when they came to the U.S.A. Who was that group?

Jdoe

perripken 09-11-2003 08:59 AM

Written by Peter Green- Fleetwood Mac
New question, should be relatively easy:

The original guitar player for Styx along with James Young, before Tommy Shaw was.......

Here's a thinker:

Who was the engineer for Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"?

Hint, he later formed his own band.

perripken 09-11-2003 08:23 PM

Hey,
I figured I'd give some other people a chance, but I just got out of work and it's been 9 1/2 hours and no answer.

Alan Parsons- Alan Parsons Project

New Question-

The backup band for Linda Ronstadt went on to record their own music. Who were they?

Jadey 09-12-2003 12:09 AM

Just now noticing this thread, and I would have gotten the Pink floyd question (my fav band)

Anyway, I think Linda Rosntadt's backup band was the Eagles, but they went by a different name when they were with her (I think.)

New Question: (This could be pretty easy)

When Metallica were in New York on tour in 1983 who did Kirk Hammet replace in the lineup at guitar.

Bonus Question:

Who was Metallica's ORIGINAL bassist?

smiling_bob 09-12-2003 01:08 AM

Dave Mustaine was replaced by Kirk. Dave later formed Megadeth.

Also, the original bassist was Ron McGovney, later replaced by Cliff Burton, later killed and replaced by Jason Newstead.

New question: What band is Rob Zombie's brother frontman for?

Unknown Poster 09-12-2003 05:28 AM

Powerman5000

No question at this time....sorry.

Ok, so I'll step in with an easy one to get the ball rolling again.

What is Sting's real name?

BTW, great job on the Alan Parson's answer. I really thought that would be tougher, but I see two people would have got it.

perripken 09-12-2003 07:46 AM

Gordon Matthew Sumner
Hey G. O. T. , don't beat yourself up about the Alan Parsons thing, I don't think alot of people knew that, but the great thing is, now they do! That's what I love about this!

perripken 09-12-2003 08:03 AM

Next Question:

What connection does Squeeze frontman Paul Carrack have to the band Genesis?

God of Thunder 09-12-2003 08:24 AM

I know the answer, I know the answer, but I won't tell.

To play fair, I'll let someone else join the thread.

Now that people know the Alan Parsons thing, it explains why The APP sounded a bit like Pink Floyd doesn't it?

perripken 09-12-2003 09:28 AM

I too, my freind G.O.T. will step back a little from this thread.
Besides, I have to go to work!
Later!

Wasn't Paul Carrack in Mike And The Mechanics with Mike Rutherford of Genesis? I think that's the connection.

perripken 09-12-2003 03:43 PM

Home for dinner,
Yes you are correct DiffEng-
Your turn to ask a question!

DiffEng 09-12-2003 03:52 PM

Ahh crap, now I've got to think of a stumper.

*thinks*

Mandy Moore's guitarist (Jason Hook) used to be in a hair metal band. Name that band.

:)

QuasiMojo 09-12-2003 04:19 PM

(A)That Band is...Bullet Boys (Thanx to Gooogle)

(Q)Steely Dans song, "Ricki Don't Lose That Number" is in reference
to What female songstress?

(extra credit- name her hit song)

God of Thunder 09-12-2003 04:49 PM

I'm guessing Rikki Lee Jones, but I can't think of one of her songs without looking it up.

I'll wait for verificaion before posting the next question.

perripken 09-13-2003 04:34 AM

The song that hit it big was "Chuck E's in love", Is the God of thunder correct on Ricki Lee Jones Quasi? If this is true, it is an interesting trivia question. Ricki didn't come on the scene until the late 70's and Steely Dan's tune was earlier than that. Could Ricki Lee been a background singer for Steely Dan or something?
Might have to investigate!
I love this stuff!
Let the God of thunder know if he's correct so he can throw another question on us!

God of Thunder 09-13-2003 08:26 AM

I'll go ahead with the next question to keep things moving, we can get an answer to the Steely Dan one later.

This one is inspired by the late Johnny Cash. (Man, it seems weird saying that.)

Johnny was one of only four performers to have been inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame:

Name the other three.

perripken 09-13-2003 09:27 AM

Man G.O.T. that's a tough one.......thinking...........I'm thinking Elvis must be one of them, I'm not sure on the other two. I don't want to cheat and use a search engine, so I'll let someone else try. I have some other guesses, though. I'll wait and see if someone else gets it.

One right, two to go.

To summarize:

1. Johnny Cash
2. Elvis Presley
3. ???
4. ???

Derwood 09-13-2003 10:32 AM

Hank Williams Sr.?
Willie Nelson?

perripken 09-13-2003 11:04 AM

How about Ricky Nelson?

You'd think so, but also incorrect.

Correct so far:

1. Johnny Cash - supplied by me.
2. Elvis Presley - by perripken
3. Hank Williams Sr. - by derwood

4. still looking for - This could be you folks!!:D

The original question: What four people are members of the counrty music and rock & roll halls of fame?

Hint - it's a producer.

Jdoe 09-13-2003 03:09 PM

Mutt Lang? No clue on the spelling, after you said producer, I'd guess him due to Twain/Def/acdc.

Jdoe

God of Thunder 09-14-2003 07:44 AM

NO, Mutt is not in either hall. Hasn't been around long enough.

Think older.

Another hint, he was associated with two of the other artists already listed.

Jdoe 09-14-2003 08:02 AM

Not another guess, but a question. Rock and roll hall of fame only requires 15 years right?

Jdoe

Derwood 09-14-2003 08:03 AM

I'll guess Carl Perkins

God of Thunder 09-14-2003 10:34 AM

Quote:

Jdoe

Actually, I think it is 25 years.

And Carl Perkins is also incorrect.

This is getting long.

Another hint: Think Nashville.

perripken 09-14-2003 12:18 PM

Without cheating and searching the net, I'm stumped. I'd rather this thread be on the up and up, so I give up. As the originator of this thread, I'm going to make the two day rule. God of Thunder, you have the first stumper of the thread. Congratulations! You also should come up with a new question.

God of Thunder 09-14-2003 12:52 PM

It was Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun records. (The collective sound of many people smaking their head. "D'oh, why didn't I think of that?"

1. Johnny Cash
2. Elvis Presley
3. Hank Williams Sr.
4. Sam Phillips

the only 4 people in the Rock & Roll and Country Music Hall of Fame.

I'll let someone else come up with the next question.

I like stumpers once in a while. :D

Jdoe 09-14-2003 11:47 PM

I feel like an idiot now! :( Especially after him having just passed away. I are teh suck!

Time to back up and go for an easy one. Time for the morale boosting question, everyone's smart now!

Someone save us!

Jdoe

God of Thunder 09-15-2003 04:06 AM

Allright, an easy one.

What is the connection between Lynard Skynard and .38 Special?

Jdoe 09-15-2003 05:05 AM

Definitely easy enough. I will pass though, must get new posters in this thread.

Jdoe

perripken 09-15-2003 05:14 AM

I too, will stand back on this one! C'mon people, we need some new blood in here!

DiffEng 09-15-2003 07:20 AM

<----knows very little about either band.

This one has one of those really obvious answers right?

How about a hint?

perripken 09-15-2003 09:30 AM

Hint: Siblings

God of Thunder 09-15-2003 10:08 AM

I agree easy one (must be because I asked the question :D )

There has to be some new blood out there that knows the answer.

And no, it doesn't have anything to do with Sam Phillips

DiffEng 09-15-2003 11:16 AM

I'm wracking my brain, nothing's coming other than something painfully generic. Do I get marks for really wanting to answer the question?

:)

yes, but only two :p

The painfully generic answer is probably right, just take a guess.

DiffEng 09-15-2003 12:02 PM

The hint worked. And yes, it's obvious. :)

Ronnie Van Zant sings for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Donnie Van Zant is singing and playing guitar in .38 Special.

Ronnie died awhile ago, but his little brother Johnny is now the lead singer, but you have answered correctly and may now test our knowledge by asking the next question.

DiffEng 09-15-2003 01:21 PM

Tim Skold was in a hiar band named Shotgun Messiah. He has a new gig. Name his new band.

You may notice, that both questions I've asked relate to hair metal. I grew up in the 80s, and although I love almost all music, this is my real area of expertise. :)

God of Thunder 09-15-2003 01:25 PM

Grew up in the 80s as well and thought I knew hair metal, but I have been humbled.

Like the tree said to the lumberjack...I'm stumped.

DiffEng 09-15-2003 02:10 PM

Hint: It's a pretty huge band. released a new album in the last 6 months.

God of Thunder 09-16-2003 04:11 AM

Well, I cheated and looked it up, so I won't post the answer and I can tell you, as a classic rock kind of guy, I would have never known the answer.

The new band he is in is just not my style.

Good luck.

perripken 09-16-2003 04:41 AM

I too cheated and looked it up, and I also don't like that kind of music, but that doesn't make it wrong- To each his/her own!
Since I cheated, I won't answer.
If there is no answer by 5:21 this afternoon, DiffEng, you will be the proud second stumper of this thread! At that point, you will need to come up with a new (hopefully slightly easier) question.
Good luck all!

DiffEng 09-16-2003 09:08 AM

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of his new band, but I can listen to them without wanting to switch stations or something.

I'll start thinking now then in case I have indeed stumped the board. :)

God of Thunder 09-16-2003 02:56 PM

I think you stumped the board.

next question please.

perripken 09-17-2003 03:26 AM

Yes, you stumped the board on Marilyn Manson. I cheated, so I won't take credit. We need a new question DiffEng.

perripken 09-17-2003 05:59 AM

Since it appears that DiffEng is'nt going to post a new question,
as the originator of this thread, I will post one.
This should be fairly difficult, but it is rememberance of The man in Black.
A future country music star was in the audience when Johnny Cash recorded "Live at San Quentin" Name him.

DiffEng 09-17-2003 07:02 AM

And just when I had a new question too.

I thought the prison CD was recorded at Folsom Prison? No idea who the future star is.

perripken 09-17-2003 07:06 AM

Quote:

I'm sorry- just trying to move the thread along. Go ahead and post your question. I will answer this one if nobody gets it by tomorrow. We'll just call mine a bonus question:
BTW, he recorded at both prisons. My dad had Live at San Quentin- great album, check it out

DiffEng 09-17-2003 07:29 AM

No that's cool. I can wait until the next one I get right. :)

This one won't be it. I know shit about country music.

God of Thunder 09-18-2003 04:00 AM

Just a guess, Waylon Jennings

perripken 09-18-2003 04:35 AM

Hint: Okie from Muskogee

God of Thunder 09-18-2003 07:31 AM

I almost said Merle Haggard the first time.

No, really I did.

Next question: How did the band Yes come up with the title for their 1983 album "90125"?

DiffEng 09-18-2003 08:19 AM

Postal code for the recording studio?

God of Thunder 09-18-2003 09:07 AM

mml 09-18-2003 09:46 AM

ignore this post

God of Thunder 09-18-2003 06:14 PM

No guesses??

Anyone, anyone. Bueller?

Allright a hint that will probably give it away.

How many of you own the album? Show of hands? Ok, good.

Get out your album, cassette or CD, it doesn't matter. Make sure it's the original release not the live version.

Look at the back or on the side. See if you find the answer.

perripken 09-19-2003 06:05 AM

My albums are all packed away and I don't have it on CD, although I should, it's a great album. Is it a birthdate?

Nope, good thinking though.

What your looking for actually appears on all albums. If you look at a CD, check the side.

perripken 09-19-2003 07:07 AM

Is it the serial number of the album?

God of Thunder 09-19-2003 07:39 AM

Quote:

Yup!!!

They didn't have a name for it so when the studio got the masters, it was labeld on the side as "Yes, album #90125" and the studio thought that was the name of it. The band liked it, so it stuck.

To be fair, DiffEng gets to ask the next question.

perripken 09-19-2003 07:48 AM

Good question G.O.T. And a lucky answer on my part.
Bring it on DiffEng!

perripken 09-19-2003 03:48 PM

We need a question DiffEng

God of Thunder 09-21-2003 06:31 AM

Allright. Looks like I have to jump-start this thing again.

How did the band Led Zeppelin get it's name?

Jdoe 09-21-2003 01:03 PM

That'd go over about as well as a lead balloon. It originated from saying a certain band make-up would not work. So it was a joke saying we'll call it lead zeppelin because it'll go over about as well as a lead balloon.

I have a feeling that DiffEng is away for the weekend, so I say we give him a chance to ask a question when he's back. In the meantime...

Where did UB40 get their name?

Jdoe

redravin40 09-21-2003 02:38 PM

It's the British unemployment/inland revenue form.
They started out as a barber shop quartet. (thanks Melllvar)

What is Adam Ants' full real name?

God of Thunder 09-21-2003 02:43 PM

I think it is Stewart Goddard, but not sure on the spelling.

I'll continue the real name thing.

What is Elvis Costello's real name?

JadziaDax 09-21-2003 02:49 PM

Actually, it's Stewart Leslie Goddard (Adam Ant)

And Elvis Costello is Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus.

So, who was Elvis Costello married to (for 16 years)?

God of Thunder 09-21-2003 03:37 PM

Elvis was married??

Wow, didn't know that.

Nice to see ya join this thread Jadzia!

JadziaDax 09-21-2003 04:09 PM

Not only was he married once and had 2 children, but he's presently engaged....

Fly 09-21-2003 08:08 PM

Cait O'Riordan?

hopeing it's right.....

*easy one*

John Bonham's middle name........

(and Bonzo doesn't count)

perripken 09-22-2003 04:44 AM

John Henry Bonham

perripken 09-22-2003 08:07 PM

That is correct costello, your turn to come up with a question.

costello 09-22-2003 08:21 PM

lame ... i joined the thread and missed out on the elvis costello questions so im throwing another one in :)

Elvis Costello's first album, "My Aim Is True" was released in July 1977. Who was the backing group for this effort?

God of Thunder 09-23-2003 04:05 AM

I'm thinking the obvious answer "The Attractions", but I could be wrong.

high_way 09-23-2003 04:24 AM

was it a band called Clover???

perripken 09-23-2003 05:02 AM

Sorry G.O.T., High_way is correct. The Attractions were on the second album "Armed Forces"

Derwood 09-23-2003 05:48 AM

I'll throw in a question:

There is only one song in the Pink Floyd library that has drummer Nick Mason on "lead vocal". Can you name it?

perripken 09-23-2003 05:56 AM

Sorry Derwood, the rules of the thread are that you have to answer a question to ask a question. High_way is on deck.
I do like your question, though!

Derwood 09-23-2003 06:13 AM

ok. I just asked cuz the last answerer didn't ask.

And I got half of the Rock N' Roll/Country hall of fame question right......

perripken 09-23-2003 06:26 AM

You did better than I did, I think I only got Elvis. We'll give high_way until noon today to ask a question, if he doesn't by then, your Floyd question is up. BTW are we talking Nick Mason actually singing, or speaking. I know he has several songs where he speaks, one in particular on Momentary Lapse- actually there is another trivia question in that one!

Derwood 09-23-2003 07:21 AM

I guess his time is up, so the Floyd question is up. I just don't know the answer.

Derwood 09-23-2003 03:57 PM

Well, there may be a discrepancy in the answer to my question, so I'll pose another:

Who is the only person to perform on every Pink Floyd album?

perripken 09-23-2003 08:27 PM

Man Derwood... are you sure about this? I thought that the only person in Floyd on Animals was Gilmour, and he wasn't on every album- he replaced Syd Barret. Other than that, I thought that Mason and Wright were on every other album all the way from their original band with Roger Waters called Abdab.

high_way 09-24-2003 03:58 AM

OK, one inspired by our friendly RIAA, the company that loves it's customers so much, they are suing them...but, that's another thread.:D

Elvis Presley has the most Gold Records of any artist - 89 (combining albums & singles)

The Beatles are tops for a group at 41.
