i think its, Stronger Than Dirt... but i'm 100% on that.

you'll have to correct me.

edit: sorry, that meant to say that i wasn't 100% sure, but now i am.

perripken 03-24-2004 03:48 PM

You are correct,sir- your question!

God of Thunder 03-24-2004 04:40 PM

You know, I've always wondered what he says at the end, so I await the answer.

That is the answer GOT, Stronger than Dirt. It was the catch phrase for Tide laundry detergent at the time.

God of Thunder 03-24-2004 06:11 PM

Well, I'll be damned. Ya learn something new everyday.

You're up bundy

Booray 03-24-2004 06:18 PM

You're right Booray, it was ajax. Sorry about the misinformation!

bundy 03-25-2004 04:23 AM

ok, so here's my question (sorry if its a little late)...

Which Nat King Cole song contains the quote used in analog's sig?

iamtheone 03-25-2004 04:54 AM

What is Nature Boy ?

Booray 03-25-2004 01:43 PM

Don't know if the last post answered the question or not, but if not, you might want to post analog's signature so we don't have to go searching for it (I couldn't find a post of his in the thread).

God of Thunder 03-26-2004 11:57 AM

Well, since it has been over 24 hours since the last correct answer I am going to kick start this thing again.

(spins the wheel of trivia to get a catergory)

click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click.

And it lands on Jazz (just to be different.)

Legendary jazz artist Charlie Parker was known by what nickname?

Booray 03-26-2004 12:42 PM

Bird

...thinking of another question...

Booray 03-26-2004 01:16 PM

Tried to think of another jazz question, but couldn't.

Question: What group is generally accepted as the first band to use lasers in a live concert, introducing their use in 1976?

Edit: Actually, I found something else that indicated that they first used them on Oct. 3rd, '75.

kulrblind 03-26-2004 01:18 PM

extremely wild guess: "Triumph"

Booray 03-26-2004 01:25 PM

nope

Booray 03-26-2004 01:45 PM

...but you are on the right track in thinking it wasn't an American band.

GuttersnipeXL 03-26-2004 01:47 PM

Blue Oyster Cult is my new guess

perripken 03-26-2004 02:15 PM

BOC is an american band, how about Supertramp?

Booray 03-26-2004 02:31 PM

Nope, not Supertramp or Blue Oyster Cult, although that does bring to mind a great song quote...

Quote:

Dropped acid, Blue Oyster Cult concert, fourteen years old,
And I thought them lasers were a spider chasing me.
--- Drive By Truckers - Let There Be Rock" ---
I'll wait for a few more guesses before I throw out another hint.

GuttersnipeXL 03-26-2004 02:41 PM

I'll say Pink Floyd, even though I suspect they were into lasers a while before '76

perripken 03-26-2004 03:17 PM

How about Black Sabbath?

Booray 03-26-2004 03:27 PM

Pink Floyd does seem like the most likely answer, but according to the websites I checked before I asked the question, it wasn't them. Floyd is more on par with this band's popularity than Triumph, BOC, or Supertramp.

Just found a link which claims that the first time this band used lasers was on Oct. 3rd, '75, so the year might be wrong on the initial question.

Booray 03-26-2004 03:29 PM

Not Sabbath

bundy 03-26-2004 03:50 PM

i was thinking Pink Floyd, but since thats wrong, what about KISS?

no wait, they were American, scratch that...

God of Thunder 03-26-2004 03:56 PM

To my knowledge KISS has never used lasers in their stage show.

My guess is Deep Purple

pan6467 03-26-2004 04:00 PM

hmmmm not an American band........ have a feeling not someone "hard" either.......

I'll say Elictric Light Orchestra, not sure but think they were English

perripken 03-26-2004 04:09 PM

One more guess from me and that's it. How about Yes?

Booray 03-26-2004 04:26 PM

ELO and Yes were two others I would've guessed too.

Here's another hint:
This band would've been one of the last for me to guess since they always expended so much energy on stage that they wouldn't seem to really need it (not to mention that they don't have much of a psychedelic quality to their music).

perripken 03-26-2004 04:30 PM

Okay, now you made me make one more guess, (the energy thing)- although I did see these guys and don't remember any lasers.
The Rolling Stones

Booray 03-26-2004 04:36 PM

I was wondering if that hint might make someone guess the Stones (sorry), but it's not. However, this band was from the same country as the Stones.

perripken 03-26-2004 04:43 PM

Er.... checking my Brit band list.... how 'bout the Who?

Booray 03-26-2004 04:51 PM

The Who would be correct according to THIS SITE and a few others I found.

perripken 03-26-2004 05:27 PM

To be fair to my fellow trivia buffs, I will let someone else ask the new question since I won't be able to check answers for the next few days, Besides, it took me quite a few guesses before I got the answer!

Booray 03-26-2004 05:38 PM

Not too many. Only 5 ;)

If no one minds, I have another one I stumbled upon today.

Question: The father of Academy Award nominated hottie Naomi Watts (21 Grams, The Ring, Mulholland Drive, etc.) was a sound engineer for what well known band until 1974?

Booray 03-26-2004 06:37 PM

Hint: It's a band mentioned above

Sion 03-26-2004 09:16 PM

"Question: The father of Academy Award nominated hottie Naomi Watts (21 Grams, The Ring, Mulholland Drive, etc.) was a sound engineer for what well known band until 1974?"

given that was one of the bands suggested as a possible answer to the previous question, and going with the obvious name link (Naomi Watts -- Charlie Watts) I'm gonna guess the Rolling Stones.

Booray 03-26-2004 09:23 PM

No. That didn't even occur to me. I'm not sure if she and he are related, but her dad (who died when she was 7) wasn't a sound engineer for the Stones.

bundy 03-26-2004 11:15 PM

well, ok...

Naomi may say she's an Aussie, but she was born in England...
so that probably limits it down to British bands... and from those listed above...

<del>its not the Rolling Stones</del>

then i'm going with Pink Floyd... for no other reason than i know then better than the other bands above.

Booray 03-27-2004 07:26 AM

Yep. Floyd would be correct. Considering the dates of recordings, it looks like he must've worked with them up through Meddle, the Pompeii performance, and Dark Side. Not sure what he died from.

Edit: Just found this somewhere: Aug 2, 1976 Former Floyd road manager Peter Watts is found dead. He is discovered, deceased, by his ex-wife Myfanwy and his business partner in a house owned by the group in McGregor Road, Notting Hill, London. Watts had died from Heroin use. Naomi was two months short of her 8th birthday when he died.

From what I gather from other sites, he was their road manager and a sound engineer for them and a couple of sites claim that he was the recorded laughing voice on Dark Side, although I thought that was someone else.

bundy 03-27-2004 05:07 PM

ok, so heres the next question...

something a little different... since Pavarotti has been in the headlines recently over his retirement... here's an Opera question.

in which Puccini opera did Pavarotti make his debut? which year? and which role?

God of Thunder 03-28-2004 07:35 PM

Looks like a stumper bundy.

Doesn't look like there's a lot of opera fans in here, unless it's Bohemian Rhapsody.

Go again.

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 06:56 AM

Kick start time again.

Boston guitarist Tom Scholz once worked as the "Senior Product Design Engineer" for what technology company, actually helping develop one of their better known products?

Sion 03-29-2004 10:09 AM

I cant remember the name of the company, but I believe the name of the product was the Rockman, a small, portable guitar amplifier that allows a player to practice anywhere.

Scholz is also a graduate of the prestigious MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

was the company Sony?

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 10:48 AM

Scholz is a graduate of MIT and did invent the Rockman, but that was with his own company "Scholz Research & Development".

The company I'm looking for was pre-boston. He hired in to this major corporation right out of college.

perripken 03-29-2004 01:40 PM

He worked for Polaroid, but I don't know what product he helped with.

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 01:50 PM

He did work for Polaroid, the product he helped develop was the "Instamatic".

By the way, since the Rockman was mentioned, I looked them up on e-bay and I have a couple bids on them right now.

Yay me!!

You're up perripken

perripken 03-29-2004 02:24 PM

ok,
Seeing how Heart is coming out with a new album and touring and I've always had a thing for Nancy Wilson, can you tell me what famous filmmaker she is married to?

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 02:26 PM

Yes, I can.

Oh...did you want me to tell you????

I'll let someone else.

Booray 03-29-2004 05:01 PM

Cameron Crowe

New question: Bonnie Raitt was married to an actor from '91 to 2000 who is best remembered (by myself, at least) for a role in one of the great comedies of all time which came out in 1980. What movie was it and what was his character's name? (Bonus points for his actual name).

He got an Oscar nomination for a role in '79 in a pretty decent movie (which was adapted from a great book), but is better known for the movie from '80.

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 07:34 PM

She was married to Michael O'Keefe who played Danny Noonan in Caddyshack. He also played Roseanne's brother-in-law in her sitcom.

Alright this one just came up with some friends tonight.

What album (name the specific song if you can) was Tipper Gore's daughters listening to that outraged her so much that she forced the parental advisory stickers.

sherpahigh 03-29-2004 07:41 PM

Straight outta Compten? Total stab in the dark though but for some reason i think it's an NWA album.

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 07:56 PM

Nope, wrong genre.

GuttersnipeXL 03-29-2004 07:56 PM

I'm going with Twisted Sister...Under the Blade. If it wasn't Twisted Sister it was probably W.A.S.P or Zappa....hmmm.

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 08:08 PM

Nope.

Remember folks this was Al & Tipper Gore's teenage daughters.

It was also the early 80s. 1984 to be exact.

GuttersnipeXL 03-29-2004 08:25 PM

Righty...lets try again....Cindi Lauper, Girls just want to have fun...?

Sion 03-29-2004 08:34 PM

shit, shit, shit...I KNOW this one, but just cant get my brain to release the information at this time.

I'll be back, hopefully before someone else chimes in with the answer.

God of Thunder 03-29-2004 08:34 PM

Good guess, you're on the right track.

It's not Cindi Lauper, but her hit "She Bop" might give a hint.

I'll check back in the morning.

GuttersnipeXL 03-29-2004 08:41 PM

My last guess of the night...Madonna, Like a Virgin.

Maybe it'll come to me in a dream tonight...let me sleep on it...

Booray 03-29-2004 08:51 PM

I think it was Prince's Purple Rain and the song was Darling Nikki (and its lines about masturbating with a magazine). My sister had that tape and I remember permanently ruining it by pulling out the tape and twisting it and managing to play it backwards to hear the backwards message at the end of that song.

I could've sworn that the Dead Kennedys album with the cover that H.R. Geiger did with the field of penises had something to do with it too (like Tipper's daughter bringing it home). Maybe that was a different person's daughter.

Sion 03-29-2004 08:54 PM

grrr at Booray. I go away for 15 mins, think of the answer, only to come back and find that you beat me to it.

grrrrrrrr

good job, btw.

Booray 03-29-2004 09:06 PM

Just checked to see if I was right about Darling Nikki and I was, so I'll think up another question.

The PMRC was already formed, apparently, when they came after the Dead Kennedys for their Frankenchrist album. H.R. Giger (the guy who designed the alien in Alien who also did a bunch of memorable album covers) had a work of art called 'Landscape #20, also called 'Penis Landscape', which was included as an album insert and pissed someone off and criminal charges for distrubution of harmful matter to minors were brought against the Kennedys in a trial where Jello Biafra argued that they were trying to violate First Amendment rights. I remember digging up the picture on a Google search a while back. I'll see if I can find it again.

Booray 03-29-2004 09:29 PM

27 has often been pointed out as an age that a few successful musicians had in common when they died. Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, and Cobain are the ones that are probably the most easy to recall, but there are at least two others that stand out as well. One, a keyboardist for a successful band, died in 3/8/73 of liver failure (he also was nailing Joplin for a while). The other was a rhythm and slide guitarist (and played other various instruments and sometimes provided backup vocals) for another successful group before leaving them a month before he drowned on 7/3/69. Who were the two guys?

Good job Booray.

We were just talking about Prince when my friend's wife said that if any album need the warning sticker, it was that one. My answer was "Funny you should say that."

Which lead me to my question.

pan6467 03-30-2004 06:42 AM

I know the second one because I am a great fan of his and believe the band was never the same (SELLOUTS). His is a very interesting story and very sad. Won't answer because I haven't a clue as to the first one.

Sorry, Just happen to admire the man immensely and had to include my rant.

GuttersnipeXL 03-30-2004 09:37 AM

Howsabout Pigpen "Ron McKernan" from the Grateful Dead, and Lowell George of Little Feat fame?

Booray 03-30-2004 10:44 AM

Pigpen is right, but Lowell George isn't correct for the second one (he died of a heart attack when he was 34). I guess pan6467 might know the second one. If he or someone else posts it, y'all can decide who asks the next question.

Her favorite "bands" are O-Town, Clay Aiken and Barry Manilow.

Any questions?

Any questions?

Just one....has she come to realize yet that, contrary to the opinions of mothers of the 70s that cracked in half any and all Kiss and Alice Cooper records they came across, that type of music is the true devil's music? I imagine if hell really exists, they'll be rotating selections of those bands over the loudspeakers with a little bit of Bay City Rollers thrown in for good measure.

perripken 03-30-2004 01:48 PM

Was the second one Brian Jones?

pan6467 03-30-2004 01:54 PM

Perripken you got it bro.

Brian Jones was the MAN. If you read the stories of what Mick and Keith did to him you could see how tortured he was. I know after I read some of them I could never think of the Stones the same. Brian Jones named the Stones, he was the one who started the Stones, and so on.

Sad story his life. Extremely talented.

perripken 03-30-2004 02:05 PM

I think Guttersnipe XL should ask the next question since he was the first to chime in with the correct answer. Hit us with one GuttersnipeXL!

GuttersnipeXL 03-30-2004 02:26 PM

Here's one for ya's...

This 1970's to current, funk bass extraordinaire was nicknamed "Starchild". What is that bass players name?

Booray 03-30-2004 04:00 PM

Is it Bootsy Collins? Not sure if that was his nickname but I remember he always wears star sunglasses.

GuttersnipeXL 03-30-2004 06:14 PM

Good answer, Bootsy sez it's your turn!

http://www.groove-on.cz/img/photo/bootsy.jpg

Booray 03-30-2004 07:39 PM

Thank yuh Bootsy

Question: The funk band War started out as the backing band for what vocalist?

Sion 03-30-2004 09:31 PM

Im pretty sure that would be Eric Burden, formerly of the Animals.

Sion 03-31-2004 09:42 AM

ok, new question:

The seminal rock album "Who's Next" (by the Who, naturally) was birthed out of the remains of a much bigger, multimedia concept from Pete Townsend. What was the name he gave to that concept?

agball 03-31-2004 10:37 AM

Lifehouse, Baby!!

Question:

Who was the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live?

Sion 03-31-2004 10:59 AM

correct, agball, though to be precise, it was called the Lifehouse Project.

random guess at your question: Joe Cocker

Booray 03-31-2004 02:08 PM

No clue. I'll guess Neil Young

Booray 03-31-2004 03:10 PM

Already checked the answer and I'm wrong. This one might be tough.

perripken 03-31-2004 05:25 PM

God of Thunder 04-02-2004 05:06 AM

GuttersnipeXL 04-02-2004 07:54 AM

It's been 24hours hasn't it been? hey, Pan, where are you!!!!

kulrblind 04-02-2004 10:46 AM

*crowd chanting*

new question, new question, new question....

pan6467 04-02-2004 11:05 AM

Sorry ...........

OK here we go.........

The greatest group in the world (IMO) The KINKS had a producer that helped form their sound, later he left to work with the High Numbers changing their name.

Who was the producer and what was the new name of the group?

perripken 04-02-2004 02:43 PM

Damn... I know the name of the band, but not the producer!
Damn Damn Damn....

Sion 04-02-2004 08:31 PM

just a suggestion, but perhaps these two (and three) part questions should be pared down to single answer type questions. it would probably keep things moving along better.

hmmm...the High Numbers? I know I've heard that name before, but cant for the life of me place it with the band they became...

perripken 04-03-2004 08:11 AM

I've made this suggestion before. You also get two different people answering the question. Sion, you asked a question about this band at the top of the page. This should pare it down to one question. Now all we have to do is come up with the producer.

Sion 04-03-2004 09:28 AM

ok that would make the band The Who, and if my memory serves me correctly, the producer would be Glyn Johns.

Sion 04-04-2004 04:43 AM

ok, Glyn Johns is not the correct answer. (having not gotten verification from pan, I did an AMG search).

so, it looks like we have a stumper. we need a new question pan.
