Takes one to know one?

BadNick 06-18-2008 09:47 AM

Not sure if it's the longest, but a long and winding road nonetheless

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...north-ramp.jpg

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...e20bike20t.jpg

The Stelvio Pass is one of the highest Alpine Passes of Europe with its 2758 m. There are 48 hairpin turns on the northern side of the pass. The original road was built in 1820-1825 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardia with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1871 m. Since then, the route has changed very little. The 60 hairpin bends, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists.

ring 06-18-2008 03:32 PM

What car would you dream of having, to quickly and
safely navigate those turns with?

MexicanOnABike 06-18-2008 03:35 PM

for sure!

ring 06-18-2008 04:02 PM

maybe

MexicanOnABike 06-18-2008 06:10 PM

I changed my mind. not anymore!

BadNick 06-18-2008 06:46 PM

I'm sure...I'd like to do it in my car since I know it so well and it is very capable...though I would also like to do it in many other cars eg. Porsche GT3, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, just to name two likely suspects. And when I say "do it..." none of these cars have back seats!

SSJTWIZTA 06-18-2008 08:29 PM

i think they tackled that road on top gear with a light weight lambo, a light weight porsche, and i believe the last car was an austin martin.

btw, it's "Aston Martin" ...the Austin was another vehicle not related to "Martin". Though there have been Austin's that would work well on that road.

I see something green growing on the roof.

BadNick 06-19-2008 01:56 PM

The Mayans were advanced in a lot of ways, so it doesn't surprise me that they were in the lead on green rooftop gardening, along with ritual human sacrifice.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...__original.jpg

Baraka_Guru 06-19-2008 02:13 PM

We do have ritual human sacrifice; we call it the public education system.

BadNick 06-19-2008 02:16 PM

B_G,
I understand what you're saying since both of my wives taught in public schools. But as I'm sure you'll agree, there are exceptions...like the public schools in my neighborhood are pretty damn good imo, and I only see them doing the human sacrifice thing once in a while...not too bad.

Wow, you have a thing for teachers too?

There are exceptions, but even with the quality schools, there are still a number of sacrifices that must be made in the name of standardization and expectations....even in the best of schools.

Esoteric 06-20-2008 09:16 AM

Not only were they both public school teachers, but they both had the same last name, though lucky for me they are not related to each other.

Otherwise, I think some of my female encounters are "haunted"...before I married my current, final, and all-time favorite wife, three women I dated in the few years previously all had the same exact birthday as my lovely dearest wife...Oct. 17  At least it makes it easy to remember since I have a problem with those things, due I'm sure to my faulty early education.

I'm sure what you say about "standardized" educational programs is true. I don't know what a better answer could be, other than individualized curriculums and that seems like an unmanageable way to educate a lot of people...unless they all go off and do it on their own, like home schooling type thing. You got any good ideas about this?

PS: I see you're from Toronto...one of my favorite cities. I have plenty of cousins who live there and spent most of my childhood summers there, often causing havoc in High Park to the extent that even the Royal Canadian Mounties had to come get us. One of my cousins was a teacher, then a principal, and is now a superintendent somewhere in a public school district around there.

Esoteric 06-20-2008 10:31 AM

I skipped school quite a bit the last semester of my senior year. >_>

I've also smoked a bowl in my Horticulture class, go figure.

Esoteric 06-21-2008 05:30 AM

BadNick 06-21-2008 07:09 AM

I don't see how you can get bored with nonsense. After all, somebody important once said "Don't take life too seriously; you'll never get out of it alive".
And Liz Hurely, who I think, and know, is hotter than hell, once said "I would seriously question whether anybody is really foolish enough to really say what they mean. Sometimes I think that civilization as we know it would kind of break down if we all were completely honest".
And that inimitable Salvador Dali once said "It is not necessary for the public to know whether I am joking or whether I am serious, just as it is not necessary for me to know myself".
And that weird Greek guy, Plato, once said "No human thing is of serious importance".
And of course, other people said stuff, too. I rest my case.

I like nonsense.

ring 06-21-2008 07:06 PM

clever.

ottopilot 06-21-2008 07:25 PM

How did you do that?

BadNick 06-21-2008 08:23 PM

bushels reminds me of one of my favorite units of measure...hogsheads per fortnight, which is a measure of flowrate

a hogshead is 2 barrels, or 63 gallons
a fortnight is 14 days
