My dearest fellow WITWAI-mates, I will be heading to Canada very early tomorrow...actually, now that I look at the clock I should say a little later today, and I won't be back until late Sunday night. If I see Fly, I'll say hi and have a few with him...not likely, though since I'll be in Toronto and vicinity. Wish me luck! |

arrrrr!!! unc, are you a pirate in Gulf City? ...I assume that above ^ you meant where you are has "city" in the name
Gulf City was founded by British pirate Ben Margoza in the mid-17th century. It went into decline in the 19th century. In 1895 it was listed as having a population of 76 people, and a post office. Gulf City was completely abandoned by or shortly after the 1920s. The site of Gulf City is now Hillsborough County property. While it was formerly connected by road to Tampa via a bridge over the Little Manatee River, the bridge is gone and the site of Gulf City cannot be reached by road. "Avast, me proud beauty! Wanna know why my Roger is so Jolly?" |
not gulf city...
|
but where you are has "city" in the name?
|
it do...
|
I'm running out out of "city" places but I just stumbled on this one which seems kind of interesting Ybor City, Tampa, Florida
Are you in Ybor City? If that's the place, I need a fine cigar to celebrate. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...yTampaFL01.jpg Ybor City (EE-borh) is a historic neighborhood in Tampa, Florida located just northeast of downtown. It was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Spain, Cuba, and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City's cigar factories would roll millions of cigars annually. The neighborhood had features unique among contemporary immigrant communities in the southern United States, most notably its multi-ethnic and multi-racial population. A slow exodus out of the area accelerated after World War II, leading to a period of abandonment and decay. After decades of neglect, a portion of the original neighborhood was redeveloped into a popular night club and entertainment district. One of the five campuses of Hillsborough Community College is located there as well, HCC Ybor. The neighborhood has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District, and several structures in the area are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, 7th Avenue, the main commercial thoroughfare in Ybor City, was recognized as one of the “10 Great Streets in America” by the American Planning. |

This place I am is a natural feature that is mostly significant because ancient inhabitants of the area used that feature in an unusual way to help them survive. When I first found out about it I was intruiged so you might also appreciate the history there. Plus, I was attracted to the unusual name of this place since it reminds me of my own mental status. |
Are you near canada's Stonehenge, aka the Sun Temple in Southern Alberta?
And Hey, Oh! |
close but no cigar, amonkie. I'm in Alberta, but south of that place by about 100 miles.
disclaimer: the following are not clues And hey, "Oh" to you, too, eh? I hope you got nice and hosed on May two-fer ...I was saluting Victoria most of that day in Toronto until I fell over. |

nope. Go N.E. about 30 miles. The place I am is not in a town, though there is a visitor center dedicated to this place within less than 10 miles...as the crow flies. Along roads it would be a few extra miles between the two.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump
|
no pops, but YES Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo Jump. Way to go, Zooks. You're up, go hide.
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a buffalo jump located where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains begin to rise from the prairie 18 km northwest of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada on highway 785. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of a museum of Blackfoot culture. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ump-27527-.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...c010274-v6.jpg The buffalo jump was used for 5,500 years by the indigenous peoples of the plains to kill buffalo, by driving them off the 11 metre high cliff. The Blackfoot drove the buffalo from a grazing area in the Porcupine Hills about 3 kilometres west of the site to the "drive lanes," lined by hundreds of cairns, then at full gallop over a cliff, breaking their legs, rendering them immobile. The cliff itself is about 300 metres long, and at its highest point drops 10 metres into the valley below. The site was in use at least 6,000 years ago, and the bone deposits are 12 metres deep. After falling off the cliff, the buffalo carcasses were processed at a nearby camp. One estimate places the number of buffalo slaughtered here over the years at 123,000. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...98f5aeaa_o.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ffalo_jump.jpg In Blackfoot, the name for the site is Estipah-skikikini-kots. According to legend, a young Blackfoot wanted to watch the buffalo plunge off the cliff from below, but was buried underneath the falling buffalo. He was later found dead under the pile of carcasses "where he got his head smashed in" http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...4actXgd_fs.jpg |
Crazy name for it...
I wonder if young Blackfoot was ever a Dawin award member.... Anyways..... Where in the world am I. And its NOT mainland America..... |
