Nope.. this particular mine was made famous by an event that is also currently happening at a place that smells like apples in Western New York...right next door to a sprinkles factory, no less!

Tully Mars 08-18-2010 08:11 AM

Jerome?

amonkie 08-18-2010 08:13 AM

See my previous post for a clue..

BadNick 08-18-2010 08:27 AM

maybe Morenci?

Tully Mars 08-18-2010 08:29 AM

San Manuel?

amonkie 08-18-2010 08:31 AM

Bad Nick got it with Morenci Mine... my dad worked for Phelps Dodge until this all went down.

Quote:

On April 7, 1982, Phelps Dodge announced it would lay off 3,400 of its workers in Texas and Arizona.

Over one year later, in May 1983, the copper mining company began negotiations with the United Steelworkers and other unions in Phoenix, Arizona. The unions agreed to a freeze of their members' wages for three years, but attempted to bargain for Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) and to prevent job combinations[2]. In recent years, similar agreements had been accepted by other mining corporations, including Kennecott, Asarco, Magma Copper, and Inspiration Consolidated Copper. However, Phelps Dodge was facing competition from overseas producers during a particularly low period of metals pricing. Increased media scrutiny, highlighted by the July 1983 cover of Business Week, declaring a "Management Crisis at Phelps Dodge", implicated chairman George B. Munroe in the company's financial woes.

The subsequent negotiations with the unions failed to lead to an agreement, and on midnight of July 30 a strike began, including workers from Morenci, Ajo, Clifton, and Douglas, Arizona. Thousands of miners walked out and a picket line was formed at the Morenci Mine. The next day, Phelps Dodge increased security personnel in and around the mine. Within days miners were subject to unlawful arrests, firings, evictions, and undercover surveillance by the Arizona Criminal Intelligence Systems Agency[3]. At the beginning of August, Phelps Dodge announced that they would be hiring permanent replacement workers for the Morenci Mine. The company took out large employment ads for new workers in the Tucson and Phoenix newspapers. Meanwhile, the local government passed injunctions limiting both picketing and demonstrations at the mine.

On Monday, August 8, approximately 1,000 strikers and their supporters gathered at the gate to the mine in response. Phelps Dodge stopped production and, later that day, Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt flew in to meet with the company. Phelps Dodge agreed to a 10-day moratorium on hiring replacement workers, and it was decided that a federal mediator would be called in for negotiations.

On the morning of August 19, military vehicles, tanks, helicopters, 426 state troopers and 325 National Guard members arrived in Clifton and Morenci as part of "Operation Copper Nugget" to break the strike. Strikers at the gate were unable to prevent the replacement workers from entering the mine. Eight days later, 10 strikers were arrested in Ajo and charged with rioting. From this point on, the strike lost much of its momentum.

After a series of confrontations and controversies, the strike officially ended on February 19, 1986, when the National Labor Relations Board rejected appeals from the unions attempting to halt decertification.

BadNick 08-18-2010 08:31 AM

Mowry? ...nevermind.

Phelps Dodge must have had other operations besides mines since I sort of recall getting steel castings from them back in the late 1970's.

I've had this place in mind for my next turn ...so where in the world am I?

Tully Mars 08-18-2010 08:35 AM

uncle phil 08-20-2010 03:01 AM

are you in rugby?

BadNick 08-20-2010 08:19 AM

Ya got me! Rugby is sometimes considered the "geographic center of North America" and there is a monument there, see below. Balta ND might contest that since they are officially closer.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...th_America.jpg

In 1931, the town of Rugby erected a 15 feet (4.6 m) tall rock obelisk marking the "Geographical Center of North America". This was moved to a slightly different location in or after 1971. According to a listing by the U.S. Geological Survey, Rugby is actually approximately 15 miles (24 km) from the geographic center of North America [6 miles (9.7 km)] west of Balta), and even this designation carries no official status.

BadNick 08-21-2010 01:06 PM

sadly, we're leaving OCMD tomorrow :(

one last guess before we get some real good bbq over in West OC:

Fort Motylindky, Tamanghasset, Algeria?

uncle phil 08-21-2010 01:12 PM

just northwest of fort motylinski...

BadNick 08-23-2010 07:55 PM

So I was just prowling around that area and suddenly they were staring me right in the face. Since it's so appropriate for you, I have to believe you're in Tit Algeria....actually in tit everywhere but in this case Algeria Tit. I just looked for some nice images for Algeria Tit but due to unexplainable search problems, I decided not to post them in this thread.

uncle phil 08-24-2010 02:29 AM

damn, nick!

how'd you find me?

yes, i'm looking for the other one in:

Tit, Algeria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BadNick 08-24-2010 11:35 AM

OK, give me a tit or two until I figure out where to go next.

unc, have you ever played golf while you were high? For example, this note from Colorado Travel Facts:

• A golf ball flies on average ten percent farther in Colorado than other states because of the altitude. It flies even farther at higher altitudes (above 7,000 feet).

uncle phil 08-24-2010 11:57 AM

there's a definite difference in ball-carry between here (1461 feet) and pasco county, florida, which is about 3 feet above sea level. humidity is also a factor in ball-carry...

aren't you enlightened?

BadNick 08-25-2010 11:47 AM

enlightened ...and lost. So find me.

uncle phil 08-25-2010 12:15 PM

Tully Mars 08-26-2010 02:14 PM

BadNick 08-26-2010 07:28 PM

yes asia, not an island

I'm looking at quite a dramatic monument.

uncle phil 08-27-2010 02:46 AM

anything like a great wall, in china?

BadNick 08-27-2010 05:47 AM

right neighborhood, wrong monument. This monument is about a specific historic person.

uncle phil 08-27-2010 05:50 AM

anything to do with chairman mao?

BadNick 08-27-2010 05:52 AM

Tully Mars 08-27-2010 06:41 AM

Are you with in 200 miles of the "Wall?" Not the Pink Floyd one, the Chinese one.

BadNick 08-27-2010 07:29 AM

I am not within 200 miles of the GW of C. Go north, young man, go north.

Tully Mars 08-27-2010 07:40 AM

Genghis Khan Temple in Wulanhot City?

BadNick 08-27-2010 08:00 AM

Tul, now you're really close with that guess since where I am relates to Genghis Khan, but it's not the temple.

Tully Mars 08-27-2010 08:16 AM

You at the huge ass Genghis Khan Statue near Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia?

BadNick 08-27-2010 10:32 AM

yep, you found me, Tul. I like pictures...see below.

Talk about huge ass, not to mention that I had a few beers for lunch a few minutes ago so I'm talking out of my ass, may I add ...did you ever hear that tune by John Lee Hooker about big legs, tight skirt...I love that tune. Actually, I'm a huge John Lee fan

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/03/wo...ghis.html?_r=1

Jesus Christ looms over Rio de Janeiro, a quartet of American presidents gazes from the face of Mount Rushmore and Lenin keeps watch over St. Petersburg. But if there were a global contest to honor larger-than-life men on a colossal scale, Mongolia might just vanquish them all — again.

A monument in Tsonjin Boldog is the latest effort to show off an old khan.
Genghis Khan, the legendary horseman who conquered half the known world in the 13th century, has returned to the steppes of Mongolia, and this time he charges admission.

You're up, Tully.

While you decide where to go, I may have to go back to Tony's to try some more beers. Btw, some of you may be interested to know that the Chinese people have been brewing beer for over 9000 years. They must really know what they're doing by now, don't you think?

Tully Mars 08-27-2010 01:16 PM

Yes I like John Lee Hooker too. Also like this guy-

OK, Find me.

uncle phil 08-27-2010 01:39 PM

Tully Mars 08-27-2010 02:02 PM

No, but you could be close... since I can't remember where that would be. I know I knew it once but that was the day I played Black Sabbath at 78 and saw God.

uncle phil 08-27-2010 03:37 PM
