Centralia?

CONGRATULATIONS, TULLY! ....right on!
Centralia is a ghost town in Pennsylvania. Its population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents in 1981 to 12 in 2005 and 9 in 2007, as a result of a mine fire burning, as we speak, beneath the borough since 1962 sending smoke up through homes and streets and most recently up into a cemetery...the smoke visibly wafting from up through gravestones. When you go there it's like stepping into another world. Don't go! It can kill you...the ground can cave in underneath you if the toxins don't kill you first! One theory asserts that in May 1962, Centralia Borough Council hired five members of the volunteer fire company to clean up the town landfill, located in an abandoned strip mine pit next to the Odd Fellows Cemetery. This had been done in previous years, when the landfill was in a different location. The firefighters set the dump on fire, and let it burn for a time. Unlike in previous years, however, the fire was not extinguished. The fire remained burning underground and spread through a hole in the rock pit into the abandoned coal mines beneath Centralia. Attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful and it continued to burn throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Adverse health effects were reported by several people due to the byproducts of the fire, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and lack of healthy oxygen levels. In 1984, Congress allocated more than $42 million for relocation efforts. Most of the residents accepted buyout offers and moved to the nearby communities of Mount Carmel and Ashland. A few families opted to stay despite warnings from state officials. This fire is expected to burn for a couple of centuries...until it has expended all the coal veins The residents plan to return in 2016 to open a time capsule. |
...and Honorable Mention goes to Uncle Phil
...and the Booby Prize goes to BadNick...hey, what's that in Pic#3 ?!?? Does that Street Graffiti say "BadNick" !? .................Were you there? |

as a matter of fact, in "real life" I've driven through and walked around Centralia a number of times...very eerie place as you said. On my drive home from Watkins Glen racetrack in NY, I usually take back roads over the mountains into northern PA and Rt. 61 is a nice scenic road that goes right through the middle...what used to be the middle... of Centralia. Smokin' hot place! I hope you didn't burn your toes. |
Yes, WH
And yes I do remember you picking Centralia. It's likely the main reason I thought of it right a way... after reading your post. |
NH?

I missed that, BadNick...i owe you one...which one do you want? ...would you like to lick my luscious big toe or indulge in my delicately scented and delectable pinky toe...only one now ....just doing my part for the cause of your new-found fetish :p Perhaps I should dip them first in your quote from over in the ABC Word Association thread (you sexy thang you): Quote:

Yes
|
in oregon?
|
Yes.
|
East of I-5?
|
North of Rt. 20?
PS: I'd like to add this comment/opinion: I don't think we should burden anyone with having to look through this entire thread to make sure they don't duplicate places we've already been. That could put a damper on people's motivation to play the game. Just pick a place that seems interesting to you for whatever reason and go for it. |
...southwestern quadrant of the state?
|
Quote:
|
Yes Phil, No Shell.
What Nick? Oh wait, yes, North of 20. Sorry missed your 1st post. |
anywhere near umatilla national forest?
|
No, but both pieces of what's left of that forest are awesome elk hunts.
|
are you a town/city?
|
I'm in a village, didn't even know Oregon had villages but this is one.
|
mount hood village?
|
No, but if it helps I used to pass through here on my way to ski on Mt Hood.
Not a very exciting place to be honest. |
population under 1,000?
|
mt. bachelor village?
no, scratch mt bachelor....Sisters at the gateway to the Cascades? :rose: |
No Shell, not Sisters... north go north.
Phil, I can't find a pop listed but my guess would be under 1000. I also found a site that stated this was a village then the residents voted that designation out. The vote was 293 for village and 298 for town. Such excitement for such an unexciting place. |
Historic Old Town of Florence?...or should I keep heading north?
|
Culver, OR?
|
echo, or?
|
No, No and No.
Shell the only Florence, Or I know is on the coast. I'm east of I-5. I'm in a town (I double checked they did vote it back to a town in August, 2006) in Clackamas County, Oregon... and there's nothing to do here. |

since I was born in Austria, I'll have to guess: are you in Fucking, Austria? Fucking, Austria
check out this page I randomly popped up...I think it's pretty fucking funny http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ingaustria.jpg |

I should have known you'd know all about Fucking, Austria.
That was a quickie. I think you must have just broken the where-in-the-world-am-i record for the fastest find. The local tourist guide, Andreas Behmueller of Fucking, Austria says that Germans all want to see the Mozart house in Salzburg, Americans usually come for the Sound of Music shot around Salzburg, the occasional Japanese tourist comes to see the nearby birthpace of Hitler in Brauman..."but for the British it's all about Fucking". My last destination you said had already been done here... ...I hope we haven't done Fucking here before, have we? You're up, BadNick :) :rose: |
Love ya, Shell. They say you can't fool an Austrian too many times so don't bother trying since I was born in Braunau.
I'll need a bit to find my next destination. I"ll report back soon. |
OK, as another famous Austrian once suggested: I'm back
So where in the world am I? |
in your sofa, possibly even california?
|
pretty close, but no cigar, unc < that's not a clue, I just know you like a good cigar.
PS: do you notice how I added a little something to my reply instead of just "yes" or "no"? I'm trying to enhance discussion on TFP by adding such astute comments to some of our most fun threads in Nonsense....but I hope I don't make them into nonNonsense since that would defeat the purpose of the Universe as we know it. Anybody have anything more to say about that? Personal experiences? Dirty pictures? |
so let's get parochial - NH?
film at 11... |
yes to NH.
And just to discuss that point into better clarity, I mean Northern Hemisphere and not New Hampshire. A topic for another day might be "who the hell put the "p" into Hampshire? Next time I'm ordering hamp and erggs over easy. |
WH?
but then it would be "new ham cheer..." just visualize 8 or 10 pigs in skimpy outfits doing handstands and cartwheels in front of 70- to 80,000 screaming eagles fans... |
Quote:
...close to usa...so canada? |
yes to WH and no to Canada.
unc, I would like to think of those 8 or 10 little piggies being smokin' hot...like in a BBQ! Just yesterday I got some from Phoebe's BBQ which used to be downtown on South St. but a few months ago they moved much closer to me, probably because I like to eat it. I prefer dry rub to the sloppy wet stuff but a little lubrication with beer helps get it down and the bubbles tickle. Sadly, I didn't get a pic of it so I can't post it in the "what are you eatin' right effin' now" thread which, I might add, was a thread started by Starkizzer and based on her recent thread in "playground", I don't even want to know what the hell she's eating now. Shell, careful how you interpret my first line of reply to unc's post #9380 since you seem to have drawn the wrong conclusion. Understandable though, since you are a woman  and there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting your emotions get the best of you. Otherwise, about the "p" thing, are you inquiring more "why" or "how"? I found this authoritative treatise on the subject but please excuse the freeform spelling since we know you can't be good at science and language at the same time, as has been proven by other debates here that we needn't go over again. Here's the link to substantiate this reference source: Ask BadNick: Why do men pee standing up Here's a brief insight into the current most advanced thoughts on this subject: "...After time, scientists discovered that when men pee, their is just a jet from their muscle coming out, when women pee, their is no jet from not so much muscle in that area! So women can still pee standing up but make a mess, men still pee outside because for one thing, it is fun, for anouther, it is in mens nature, if on civilized person says DON'T PEE ON THAT TREE! Then dont listen to them, why not? it's good for the enviroment!..." |

not mexico
|
Island?
(Thought I asked this this morning, having net issues today. If so sorry to ask same Q twice) |
thought i covered your sofa, but maybe you missed it...
usofa? |
not island...Tul, that's definitely the first you asked that in this round.
unc, yes usofa...and when you asked "possibly even california" above I said "pretty close" though my "discussion genes" got the best of me and I probably confused most of you. Sorry. Carry on. |
So west of the Mrs?
|
north of 40?
|
yes west of the mrs.
south of the 40 |
texas?
|
not texas...but I did just read bobby's new post about Texas....I think in "playground" but I'm not sure now. Check it out, it's interesting in a Texan sort of way.
|
arizona?
|
not Arizona
unc, you didn't say "may I?" ...so no giant steps for you. Take a baby step and try again. ps: on the discussion front, I wonder where in the world dear ring might be? At least from what I see on her post history, it seems she hasn't posted in over a month so that's why I'm asking/concerned. |
new mexico?
i think if anyone would know about our dear grace, it would be OCM... |
did you say "may I?" this time? ...New Mexico is el correcto.
Now keep in mind that I hope you don't leave me hanging here too long, so please find me soon. And also keep in mind my predeliction for superlative things and places, of which this place is one. I'll inquire with Ocm? about Grace. |
