i watched casino again last night, havent seen it in a few years.
great acting all round, sharon stone humiliates herself as the slave to her pimp boyfriend, deniro presents an honest and likeable bookie, and pesci stabs everyone in the chest.
nicely directed, and actually very funny look at why "this would be the last time anyone trusted a couple of wiseguys to run a casino"

4.5 / 5

roachboy 10-04-2004 06:13 AM

cure

very interesting film. really a pleasure to watch, even at those moments when it veers quite close to being a detective. great use of sound, smart direction. good stuff.

mad_sn00gans 10-04-2004 03:01 PM

I watched "Saved" lastnight

I thought it was really well done....had good laughs and had interesting ideas towards organized religion.

Jena Malone did an amazing job with her role as the confused born again.
Mandy Moore did a great job as the religiously obsessed b*tch.
Maculay Culkin was suprisingly good in his role as the crippled rebellious brother
I always liked Patrick Fugit...especially his role in Spun...great actor
And Eva Amurri did good at making sure she wasn't too over the top with her bad ass outcast role.

I give it the thumbs up....so check it out and let me know what you thought.

Paradise Lost 10-04-2004 06:52 PM

Notorious - A 1946 movie by Alfred Hitchcock with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.

I always miss the first 10 minutes of this movie, but it deals with CG and IB as a team of
detectives trying to track down something fishy going on (this is all I was able to pick up on
before the real plot kind of unravelled.) It's really hard to explain how the whole thing
unfolds, but it is actually quite interesting, by the fact that you're trying to figure out what
the hell is going on the whole time, but still be thoroughly into it. Check it out next time
it's on TCM.

I just saw Coffee and Cigarettes on dvd from netflix.

The movie feature several shorts with celebrities such as Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Bill Murray, RZA, GZA, Steven Wright, and Roberto Benigni chatting over... cigarettes and coffee.

Bill Murray with RZA and GZA was a great scene with RZA as an herbal doctor and Bill Murray as their waiter. Jack White was also pretty funny describing the genius of Nikola Tesla to Meg White, who doesn't seem too good in front of the camera. All in all a good flick.

Rinndalir 10-08-2004 12:12 PM

Sat up with a sick baby last night so I watched Equillibrium:

Sci fi movie set in a future where emotions are regulated by drugs, so there is no hate, greed, jealousy etc. But all the positive emotions are gone as well. Christian Bale stars as the main character, he's a member of an elite police force called the "clerics" who keep the peace and track down and kill "sense offenders" which is pretty much anyone who feels emotion. They're trained in "gun kata", a martial arts style that uses firearms, basically Matrix/Hong Kong cinema style gun-fu stepped up a notch. When he misses a dose of his medicine though he starts to feel and things get interesting (and bloody). Sean Bean has a small part, he dies of course, he's such an awesome actor but directors feel the need to kill him off in every movie he's in for some reason. Its basically an action movie, Christian Bale's character is BADASS and the gun fights are amazing. But it has a thoughtful aspect to it as well, its kind of a mix of 1984 and The Matrix. Has some plotholes and the message is pretty heavyhanded but overall thoroughly enjoyable, 4/5

nukeu666 10-08-2004 12:37 PM

clockwork orange
damn good movie about a dystopian future where crime is controlled by mind control and the side effects

only 1984 beats this movie in its catagory

roboshark 10-09-2004 08:10 AM

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Can't give it more than a 7 out of 10, unfortunately. I guess all the hype surrounding it led me to believe it was going to be very good.

The weakness came, in my opinion, from the secondary story line, that contributed little to the main story. And halfway through, I realized that I could stop watching and not be bothered by the fact that I'd miss the ending. It's probably just me, though. Maybe a lot of people like the "wacky-ness" factor. I thought it was a bit over the top.

Very cool movie. Watching it again with the director's commentary (George Lucas) is a must to understand just how much is going on in the film.

Saved 7.5/10
Good, fun movie. Simple message, odd development, wouldn't have watched it if my girlfriend didn't rent it... Worth seeing once tho

screamincheetah 10-09-2004 12:32 PM

I love movies, but don't go to the theater anymore. I just can't justify the money, and knowing that I'm going to have some jerk around me talking, kicking the chair, or any other number of assface things. Plus, with my set up at home, I have a better picture and sound, and a much better seat :)

That being said, I'm a huge fan of Netflix. So, I'm always a little behind the current hits, but they're current to me.

Two nights ago I watched "Radio." I'm usually a sucker for emotional movies, but this one just wasn't very good. I'd give it 2 out of 5.

Up next is Hidalgo and Hellboy.......I'm into the one word movie titles right now, preferably starting with an "H."

powerclown 10-14-2004 06:04 PM

Kill Bill v2 - 6/10

v1 was a lot better. I don't know the history behind this movie, but the action scenes (except for the eyeball scene) sucked. Uma's beginning to show some mileage as well, which pains me to say, as I used to drool like Pavlov's dog at the sight of her. This role in general is more suited to someone like, say, Juliette Lewis - someone with a real wild streak, not a classic beauty like Thurman. Complete waste, and I suspect she chose this role because of her recent divorce.

I was expecting more from Michael Madsen too, but it was a shit part played with zero enthusiasm. David Carradine was fantastic, where the hell did that performance come from!?! Oh well...pretty disappointing Tarantino flick.

Kostya 10-19-2004 04:15 AM

Nosferatu - 1921 F. W. Murnau.

Ahhh, what brilliance.

Dawn of the Dead - 1979 George A. Romero.

Shits all over the new version. Violent, hilarious, caustic and overall classic B grade horror.

Grace, Too 10-19-2004 04:45 AM

I just saw Team America - World Police. I thought it was really really funny. It was South Park funny. Lots of vulgarity, lots of over the top stuff, but I won't lie - I was laughing till I cried. All the songs alone are enough to give this movie a good rating in my opinion. You couldn't go to this movie and not laugh. Well, you could if you were expecting to see Remains of the Day. So many good and memorable lines as well.
What did you think?

Kwaidan - 7/10

Japanese flick made up of four different ghost stories. This is a QUIET movie. Dialogue and sound are quite sparse, and it definitely sets an effective mood for telling ghost stories. 'Hoichi The Earless' is creepy in the extreme. The atmosphere this movie creates is spellbounding.

5/10. a mildly entertaining piece of crap. i didn't have high hopes, and i enjoyed it for the most part (the first half more than the second). it's a little long, though.

Dawn of the Dead (3 and a half out of 5)

Personally i love any post-apocalyptic movies especially with zombies, and this movie stayed true enough to the earlier 'Day of the Dead' to be considered a fine example of the flesh-eating genre. Lots of thrills, spills and genuinely sick moments to keep you chuckling or shaking...

Shaun of the Dead (5 out of 5)!
A brilliant spoof on the genre and funny pretty much all the way through...

Why not watch them back to back..?

grendel 10-19-2004 08:34 AM

man, i can't wait to see Shaun of the Dead. just haven't taken the time to do it yet.

Saw The Bourne Supremecy this past weekend.

Great movie. Enjoyed it a lot more compared to the first one. The last chase scene was awesome. It was kind of crazy how Maria died so early in the film. Actually, I was quite shocked to see this.

Don't want to spoil it too much. This is a great action film and should definately at least be rented to watch.

Can't wait for the 3rd one!

avhg1 10-19-2004 11:14 PM

I saw the first 1/2 hour or so of Saw. I've got to see the rest. It's very freaky.

screamincheetah 10-20-2004 07:37 AM

Let's see the last two NETFLIX movies I've seen .........

HIDALGO = 2 out of 5 I'm not sure I was expecting too much, so it wasn't a let down. It was entertaining, but just not a lot to it. It's just alright.

KILL BILL 2 = 4 out of 5 I thought the movie, while not as good as the first, was still very well done. The first is more about the action and the second is more about the character development which fleshed out the movie and made it complete. Definitely worth seeing. Very Good.

High & Low - 8/10

A non-samurai Kurosawa film - the first one for me. A poor boy, mistaken for the son of a rich man, is kidnapped and held for ransom. Does the rich man pay the ransom of the son of his chauffeur and suffer financial ruin, or save the boy's life? Fine acting, interesting plot, played out in film-noir style. Solid performance as ever by the rampaging Toshiro Mifune.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell **

I'm not really to much of an anime fan but I figured I would give it a shot because it's gotten so many good reviews and I don't really like singling out certain genre types as being bad. But I really wasn't impressed, I understood the significance of everything and all but the story didn't really go to far. I give it two stars because I think they could have taken it a lot further. There was real potential in it but it just wasn't realized.

hoobajoo 10-21-2004 12:33 PM

It didn't get great reviews on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes but I enjoyed it a lot. It was very entertaining and funny.

i really liked this movie. actually i think it's the best silent film i've ever seen.
the melodramatic acting was never too hyper
fritz lang's 2026 looks shockingly similar to cities of today, except for the biplanes and model t's. the special effects were great.
too bad some of the film was lost forever. i guess it just adds to the mystique.

Ok, its really a tv pilot reworked into a tv movie.
Crap, but funny...and what else was I gonna do at 1 in the morning?
Gets a 2 for the hot chickies.

Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn

Somehow I had seen Evil Dead 1 and Army of Darkness but not ED2. It's what I expected, a better funded version of Evil Dead. 4/5, with special kudos for making me laugh so hard I cried while Ash has his girlfriend's disembodied head latched to his hand and is smashing it against things to try and get it off.

i saw this film when it came out and then again last night.
it confirmed my general attitude toward tarantino.

Seen The Grudge on Friday. It was entertaining, not terribly original but I came away pretty entertained and more than a few moments that made me and my girlfriend jump.

I always feel some movies are made better by watching it in a theater with a big crowd at home this movie wouldn't give me quite the same experience.

I agree, and understand why so much of it was just not plausable scientifically. That said it was just a cool flick to watch, very visually entertaining, even though the actors in it were more props then anything/

Ultimate_Gohan 10-25-2004 05:32 PM

Ghost in the Shell 2

Its anime but it went to the theaters. Its a long movie for anime and I saw it inspite of the lack luster first ghost in the shell. But this one was advertised and looked good and it really is good. It has a nice blend of 3d and standard animation and the plot has a blade runner feel to it.

Stray Dog - 5/10

Akira Kurosawa's first US release film ('63) that didn't do anything for me. Besides the interest in seeing a 28 year old Toshiro Mifune, and his long time co-star Takashi Shimura, its a pretty thin and watery film. Skip it unless your a diehard fan or filmography student.

Disco Stu 10-25-2004 10:17 PM

Collateral ... 8/10 ... Michael Mann makes slick flicks. he even made that shit eater Cruise seem passable.

Resident Evil : Apocalypse ... 8/10 ... this film doesn't really deserve that mark, but i did grow up playing those games, so its lots of fun to see it all put together.

Commando 10/10

They don't make them like this anymore. Commando is the perfect movie, shoulda won a couple of dozen oscars too, lots of action, killing, and great one liners. It makes me some what pissed off that movies like this are no longer made, gone are the Robocops, Bloodsports, and Rambos of yesterday, replaced by pieces of crap touchy feely films. It's a good thing these movies are on DVD though. Commando is a must see, it's Arnold's best, right up there with Conan.

Grancey 10-26-2004 09:44 AM

In comparison to other movies I have seen in the last few month: 6/10

minimedgirl 10-26-2004 02:57 PM

Hero

Beautiful choreography, incredibly stylistic, gorgeous colours....the definiation of "Eye candy". The plot is not so important, it's more of a concession to allow all the gorgeousness to unfold. See it if you just want to sit back and contemplate in the beauty....
10/10 for artistic impression
4/10 for plot

******************************

The Motorcycle Diaries
Great music, Great plot, adventure...mmkes you want to pike up your bike and go travelling. LIghter than i thought it would be given the subject material. (Although that was before he became the "CHE". ) Gael Bernal is AMAZING. the most beautiful expressive face i have seen in so long....
overall 7/10

powerclown 10-30-2004 10:54 AM

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 9/10

Jim Carrey is more than good in this one, and the chemistry between him and Kate Winslet is really something. Hilarious scene where the 2 are taking a bath in his mom's kitchen sink. Good supporting role for Kirsten Dunst, but Carrey & Winslet are amazing in this. Didn't know Carrey would (or could) be semi-serious onscreen with a woman. He brings his trademark sense of humor, but more mature, less obnoxious. Killer soundtrack, too.

edit: Even better the second time. Its really a powerful, emotional, lovely movie. Lots of charming details that are missed when 1) not picking up all the dialogue, 2) you get past the unlikely sci-fi premise, 3) in a cynical mood. Great offbeat romance.

Church 10-30-2004 09:25 PM

Ran - 7/10

A definite notch down from others such as "Throne of Blood" and "Seven Samurai". This is a gory, bloody movie; unfortunately, the blood is so fake looking that its more distracting than compelling. Think: the color of the cherry topping they put on ice cream. Its way off. The storyline is here, the acting is here, the cinematography is somewhat here, but something is missing and Im still not sure what. The battle scenes don't seem as full of drama or awe or granduer, the characters aren't definitely not as well fleshed out and alive.

The Lower Depths - 8.5/10

An excellent movie. 99% is shot in one location: the interior of a hay-floor slum/tenement room. Simply a collection of everyday ramblings, arguments, lamentations, wishes, complaints, romances, gossiping, grumbling, joking, etc. from the small group living inside, plus the late arrival of a mysterious, nomadic, wise and friendly old codger. About 30 minutes too long, but otherwise a great movie. Surprised by this one.

8/10 Very interesting movie. Not too much of a plot but in a good way. The characters were helarious.

Saw:

4.5/10 Horrid horrid acting. Almost unbareable to watch at times because you aren't sure if the actors are trying to be funny or not because their acting is so off (Well at least that guy from The Princess Bride...) Also, the screenplay is pretty lame overall in my mind. It's a movie that's really hard to follow because of various subplots and such. While this type of strategy is great for a movie like Momento where the viewer is supposed to feel disoriented in hopes to connect them to the man with amnesia, I feel that Saw was confusing simply because the plot wasn't all that deep and the creators wanted to make up for it by making it hard to understand. Bad strategy in my mind. I'm still yet to work it all out, and to be honest, I don't really care to by now.

Ju-On, The Grudge (the japanese version): 8/10
Dear god this movie scared the bejesus out of me, in the last scene I knew what was gonna happen but i couldn't looked away. It was a reasonable film, i've never seen the original so I can't compare it. All in all I think it was a decent watch. I thought the plot was good and the acting was alright.

Hero. My goodness, the most visually beautiful film I have seen all year. This being said, consumate costuming and set design, as well as cinematography, did not negate the film's inability to really be as good as it should have. Zhang Zhimou is still a fuckin legend for Raise the Red Lantern, but I just felt kind of underwhelmed by the whole experience. Above average still.

I'm going to shoot out a question, don't feel like making it a topic, but how would you all rate The Exorcist. I'm going to be watching it soon and am curious on your views.

Absolute classic, if you love old dodgy horror films this one is a must see.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:

I really liked this movie. It's great to watch with a date. I had forgotten what it should feel like to really be in love.

Coppertop 11-10-2004 05:09 PM

Hidalgo. Eh, I'd give it a 5/10. And yes, we watched it because my girl just loves Viggo.

Totally. I saw it with my girlfriend who I've been in love with strongly for the past 1+ years and it was an awesome experience. One of my favorites.

JumpinJesus 11-11-2004 07:28 PM

Sideways. I'd give it a 9/10. I will say this: if there is any justice in the entertainment world, Paul Giamatti will be nominated for best actor. He's really coming into his own as a lead actor.

The Incredibles 8.5/10

Very good movie. I think anyone could enjoy it. Awesome animation and sound design and the plot wasn't super cheesy or anything. Definitely check it out in the theaters.

The Stepford Wives (2004)

Stay away from this POS, especially if you've read the book. No, in fact, just stay away from it period. Really. And I could be said to be absolutely infatuated with Nicole Kidman. Yes kiddies, it's that bad.

lpj8 11-13-2004 09:34 AM

The last movie that I saw was Bend it like Beckham,
Not my type of movie, but my wife liked it. I'd give it a 6.5/10.

RogueHunter65 11-13-2004 01:19 PM

The Incrediables

Lucky 7 Rated 8/10
Very good movie starring Patrick Dempsey and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. They both did great acting and girls Patrick is HOT.. The Lucky Seven was about a woman, Amy Meyer, whose mother died at when she was only 7. Before she dies, she makes a timeline of Amy's life. Amy takes the timeline and follows it exactly. Her mother's timeline shows that she will have 6 boyfriends and then the 7th one will be "the one". So far, everything on the timeline has worked perfectly for Amy. She finally meets a guy, Daniel, that is absolutely perfect for her, but he's only number 6. She then seeks out a temporary number 6, the bagel man, Peter(dempsey). He takes her to a friend's wedding on an island and pretends that she is his girlfriend. He shows her how to be spontaneous and tries to show her how to be free and not so restricted to the timeline. She is soon caught up in between the two and tries to decide who she is really in love with.

CQ
I would rate it 9/10. Directed by Roman Coppola (Francis's son). Very interesting but probably recomended to real movie buffs (film festival types). It has elements of an artistic French film and of a zanier Woody Allen comedy. Very stylish. Plenty of groovy tunes, too.

veruca 11-14-2004 07:53 PM

the stepford wives
6/10
i enjoyed it, i thought it was cute...but the continuity was off...were they robots or not?...lol

evilbeefchan 11-21-2004 11:02 PM

The Spongebob movie gets a 6-7/10. If you're a fan of the cartoon, you'll enjoy it. There were a lot of funny parts in the movie, and it was just a lot of fun. I was dissapointed with the ending, however. It just felt a bit anticlimactic, compared to all the madness that happened along the way.

trickyy 11-22-2004 12:30 AM

i agree, cq is a pretty good movie.

just saw touching the void, very good as well... 4.25 / 5
it's a mountain climbing movie
"based on a true story" actually has some meaning here; the incredible story is faithfully reenacted as the climbers narrate

also saw american spendor to prep for whenever i can see sideways
another "true story," reenacted as the real people narrate
this time it's an associate of r. crumb who makes comics about the oddities of daily life
3.75 / 5

Open Range (rented on video).

Directed by Kevin Costner.

Starring Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall.

I enjoyed it. It was about 2.5 hours long, but I didn't feel the length at any point in the movie, except near the absolute end. As would be expected, it's a Western epic, and this one focuses on Costner and Duvall, who are freegrazers. In order to avoid ruining anything (I probably wouldn't, but I'm also lazy), they go on a mission of justice and/or revenge, and a shootout ensues. I'm not a very big Costner fan, but his acting is decent, and he does some pretty badass laying out of the bad guys. Duvall is good as well. I was also amused because of the use of terms like "yonder" and "nigh on". Not as good as Dances With Wolves, but at least I didn't have to see Costner's ass in this one.

7.5/10

joeyaz 11-22-2004 04:09 AM

White Chicks 7.5 out of 10

This was one of those moneys my girlfriend wanted to go see but I didn't want to waste money cause it looked stupid. Well we rented it the other day and I was surprised at how funny it was to me. Maybe it was the couple of beers I drank but I really really enjoyed it considering how against I was towards watching it. A entertaining comedy.

pcockren 11-22-2004 04:26 AM

Just saw the Incredibles and had a great time...the storyline was interesting and fun, the characters were great...could have used a little more humor...8/10

cartmen34 11-22-2004 07:13 AM

National Treasure - 9/10

A really good movie. I wasn't sure what to expect given the PG rating, but I was pleasantly suprised. The dialog was a bit cheesy at times, and sometimes the plot lines were a bit unbelievable, but other than that it wasn't all that bad.

Daoust 11-22-2004 07:35 AM

I saw "Dogville" on the weekend, and I would very much like to talk with any who have seen this film. It was directed by Lars Von Trier, I think, and stars Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany and a few other notables.
This film was unlike any I'd seen before. It was my first Lars Von Trier film. It was set on a stage. It was very much like watching a staged play on film. The aspect I liked about this the most is that it made the performances of the actors much more raw and unhindered. There was no music or special effects in the film. It's success was predicated on the depth of the script and the acting.
At this point I haven't decided if I liked the film or not. But one thing is clear - I haven't stopped thinking about it since I rented it on Saturday.
I'm positive there's more to this film in terms of theme than 'do unto others as you'd have them do to you'. Is it a biopic on society at large? American rural society?
I'd love some feedback from those that have seen this film. I'm going to go over to www.movieforums.com to see what they thought as well...

The Incredibles
9/10 - One of the funniest, and best, superhero movies I have ever seen. I was smiling and laughing from start to finish. It was a movie that knew all the classic cheese in comic (for example the villain monologue...) and made them fresh. Plus, smart goons! How many times have we seen these? Not a helluva lot.

Dogville is an excellent movie, perhaps the best movie of von Triers Dogma series (I'm not quite sure if it is actually Dogma, but still) though I always liked the old-style Trier like Europa (or Zentropa in US markets).

At least Trier pointed a finger at USA with Dogville (he has been called an anti-american due his feats) but to me Dogville appeared to be universal - how people don't care anymore and nothing is ever enough. And of course very much of Dogville is loaned from Brechtian (Bertoldt Brecht) playwriting style, where actors in a fact don't try to be like they were impersonating the role, but they directly show that they are indeed acting. Just as the scenery in Dogville doesn't try to be a realistic rendition of nature - but indeed is just plain chalk lines drawn on the floor.

Just writing this makes me want to see it again, it's indeed 10/10 movie.

By the way, has anyone seen the new Won Kar Wai movie 2046? I'd be more than happy to hear some non-spoiler comments about it.
