The Last Samurai -- 5/5 *****
Everything about this film screamed brilliance, I had high hopes for this film being a fan of Feudal Japan and a fan to Kurosawa's films but this film delivered extremely well. Where ROTK made tears trickle down my face Last Samurai brought be to a blubbering mess, this film really struck a chord within me and annot wait to see it again. |
Well, we rented- haven't been to the movies for a while, but will be going to see LOTR 3 soon here....
We rented Head of State with Chris Rock- 5 ***** putting some of the irritating cheesy party- not all were cheesy, just some. But the message and storyline was awesome and Chris Rock did a superb job as being almost completely serious. Gotta watch it! |

EDIT: Sorry, just saw that someone else pointed this out, I just love Kurosawa's work so much. |
Just saw Kill Bill for the 2nd time.
Even better the second go around. The way he uses so many different styles is amazing, use of color lack there of and lighting are stunning. Tarantino weaves a great story about the art of telling a story. :thumbsup:9 out of 10. I can't wait for part 2. |
I just finished up True Romance. I've seen it several times, but it's been a while. It's really just a kick ass movie. That's about all I have to say about it. It's just cool as hell. I wish I had the more recent DVD release, but I just have the old one.
***/**** |
hard boiled DVD. great movie. this and "the killer" are the best John Woo movies so far. the r3 dvd is awefull. 7/10
pirates of the carribean DVD. it is still fun after the second viewing. 80 % of the movie is johnny depp. without him the movie would have been a lot worse. 7/10 |
I saw Big Fish last night and I thought it was rather entertaining. I think it is worth the money spent at the theatre and would recommend people to go and see it. I give it 3 ½ *****
|
Freddy Vs. Jason DVD
an amusing way to kill some time....ouch....pun |
Phone Booth
Real odd start, I thought it was some fake version. Pretty interesting, it makes you think, however sometimes boring. It's quite cool that almost the entire movie is one scene from different angles. I'd recommend watching it, although it's nothign amazing. |
ROTK...what an ordeal. Brain was fried, my head was killing me...good flick.
|
Saw 21 Grams the other day.. I loved it. Naomi Watts, Benecio, and Sean Penn were all fantastic in it and I loved how it was shot. 5/5
|
National Security. Dont watch it. Even for free on cable.
|
Torque.
Totally sucked. That's it. Nothing more. Don't waste your money. |
Return of the King, baby, a 10. can't wait for the special edition extended DVD
|
El Mariachi 4/5.
Even for a low budget film it has some seriously good moments. Next...Desperado....and then Once Upon a Time in Mexico. |
On video... Old School- pretty funny, but I didn't find it as hilarious as people have said it is. I give it a B.
In the theater... Return of the King. I love the scenes of the battle where they do an overhead view and show the masses of armies going at it. So awesome. Definite A+. |
just saw Falling Down... I dont want to overhype this movie but i realy realy realy enjoyed it! it came before pulpfiction(you'll see some parts that pulpfiction took from it)
its about a guy who snaps(goes crazy, goes postal, etc...) leaves in the middle of a traffic jam to "go home" then he gets pissed off at stuff on the way there... while this is going on, theres the story of a cop on his last day... this is one movie that i can watch forever without getting tired. i give it a 95% (lost 5% because theres no realy good music like in pulpfiction) enjoy the movie! |
I have seen it many times, but the third time is a charm and a lot of stuff is startind to sink in....symbolism stuff.......but PI(symbol) is an 8 out of 10. I love the black and white look of it, could have used a tad bit better actors too.
|
Don't make it out to the movies much anymore. Wait for the DVD to come out.
Last purchase was "Bruce Almighty" with Jim Carry. Altho I very much enjoy his movies, this one didn't seem to be up to his normal stuff. Had some funny parts but as a whole wasn't that funny. I guess to much serious fare mixed in. |
House of the dead... 1 / 10.
This wouldn't have even gotten a 1 but there were two, split second shots of zombies that I grinned because they looked like something Romero would film. Other than that... Worst videogame movie ever.. no.. Worst movie ever... |
Open Range - 7 out of 10
It is was a little slow to start off with, but what Kevin Costner movie doesn't. :) The story was good and the acting exceptional in my opinion. You can never go wrong with Robert Duvall in a western (Lonesome Dove anyone?) and I loved Michael Jeter as Percy (the horsehand). |
4 / 5 for Radio..pretty good movie kinda sad in several parts throughout but I like how the older times are portrayed and I'd probably recommend this movie to watch but it is all about what you like :)
|
Chungking Express. Don't remember what channel I was watching when I saw this, possibly some cable channel, but it was a cute, clever film about love & relationships in Hong Kong. Sorta/kinda like LA story, with subtitles, and no recognizable (by me anyway) stars.
|
Lost in Translation
I LOVE THIS FILM. i love Sofia's style. i know its a big ask to break away from daddy's influence and money, but imo, shes done it. sofia coppola is an extraordinary writer/director. the cast is sensational, the setting even better (tokyo is, after all, the greatest city in the world). i recommend this film to EVERYONE... 11/10... best film i've seen in a very long time. |
Return of the King 12/10...best film ever made IMHO
|
Swimming Pool - 8 / 10
I loved this movie. I originally rented it for Ludivine Sagnier, but it turned out to be much more than her smokin' body. I'd recommend this to movie to anyone and actually I hope someone watches it soon, because I have some questions about the ending. :) |

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I own this movie and it still makes me laugh out loud everytime I watch it. It has to be one of Johnny Depp's finest performances. And Terry Gilliam's directing is incredible. ****/**** |
The last entire movie I watched was Better Luck Tomorrow. It's a movie about overacheivers becoming bored and acting out I suppose is how to describe it. It was really interesting- not boring at all- just hard to explain. 4/5
|
Kung Pow - Enter the Fist
I don't know why but I find this movie so funny. It's an old kung-fu movie of some sort which has been dubbed over completely. They've digitally added a couple people into most of the scenes and the majority of the movie turns out to be rather amusing. Except for that damn tongue creature. I'll give it 3.5/5 |
Monster.
9 out of 10. Acting was phenomenal. |
Watched Desperado 3.5/5.
Now on to Once Upon a Time in Mexico. |
The last movie I saw in theatres was Scary Movie 3.
I thought it was very funny, and not much more. It's a great comedy, very stupid, but funny stupid. My favorite joke/reference in the movie was when they did a Signs scene where the guy that crushed the protagonist's wife against the tree with his truck, looks at her husband when he arrives at the scene of the accident and says, "Hey Frank, I'm gonna need a ride home." I forget the names, but you get the idea. It was stupid funny, and I enjoyed it. :) It helps if you've seen the movies referenced, as that really adds to the humor. You will get the references then, and not just be laughing at a random situation. |
Along Came Polly- A pretty funny movie, horrible plot wise. Funny, but its no "Meet the Parents." A decent romantic comedy. 3 out of 5 stars
|
The last movie I saw on DVD was Basic, with John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson. Me being a HUGE fan of The General's Daughter, and hearing that Basic was like TGD, but on crack, I picked it up previewed for $10 and really liked everything but the end. I won't ruin it, but I didn't like it at ALL. Everything else about the movie was great. I give it a 3.5. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole movie, then I was pissed off at the ending.
|
Once Upon A Time In Mexico
3.5/5 |
8 1/2
Directed by Federico Fellini Background: A movie director, Guido Anselmi, is being pressured by his producers, the media, and his friends and family to begin shooting his new movie. His producers are filming screen tests for the possible cast, securing locations, and even building a gigantic spaceship to use as a set for the new movie. The problem is, Guido has no idea what his new movie is about, as the script he wrote is a complete mess. My take: I watched this classic foreign film for the first time a week ago. My initial reaction after it was over was "What the hell just happened?" I knew that there portions of the movie that I thought were absolutely brilliant, but there were also stretches that I felt were lagging. I've now seen it 3 more times, and also read the booklet included with the DVD, which provides a lot of commentary and explanation. I'm now convinced that this is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, and I have still yet to uncover many of its secrets, as I haven't watched the commentary on the DVD yet. Not an easy movie to get into, but an unforgettable experience if you are willing to delve. 11.5/12 (I like using a 12-pt scale. 9/12 is extremely good, but not 'classic'. 10+/12 is so good that it's classic. 12/12 is untouchable.) |
Once Upon a Time in Mexico 4/5 ****
So much mindless fun, such a good cast thats obviously having a great time filming. Plus the only DVD with a How To Cook special feature that I know of... |
City Slickers II
4/5 Great adventure with all the funny bits and human interest value of the first one. If you enjoy City Slickers - this is a sequel that is different but just as all-around good... |
Citizen Toxie: Toxic Avenger IV
5/5 Troma strikes again with another amazing 'B' classic...funny AND fucked up |
Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
4/5 Crazy film. So much going on but it all works together. Plus all of the added value featurettes are fun to watch on the DVD too. |
when harry met sally
8/10(just coz of meg ryan) |
Paycheck
4/5 stars not too deep, but definately entertaining |
Gerry ??/??
You have to have patience to watch this movie.. Here's the deal, They took 10 minutes of character development and added 1 hour and 30 minutes of dead air... They just filmed stuff WAY too long.. There's easily 10 minutes of filming Casey and Ben's faces as they walked through the desert with no cutaways. I literally thought my dvd player froze up more than once on insanely long still shots. If you want a "lost in desert" movie, get Walkabout. If you want a short film with an hour+ desert landscape photographs enbedded and you have the patience of saint, then you might consider this film |
I'm about 3/4 of the way through "Haggard" it's an independant film done by the guys from cKy, if you like cKy you'll love this movie. it's more or less an hour long with an extra 30 minutes of skating and random stuff thrown in the mix. Granted it won't win any awards, but it's hilarious and is a definate time killer where afterwards you don't want your time back.
|
Big Fish 5/5 10/10 100/100
All the way around, I thought this movie was incredible. Like a live-action fairy tale. It was beautifully written, well acted, and carried out with style. Definate recommend. |
You Got Served
3/5; if the acting had been way better this would have been a little higher possibly. But the dancing was outta control and made up for the dumb hole-filled plot. |
There aren't many movies that deserve 5/5 IMO because if they all were then they'd also all be average. I hold 5/5's for 1-3 of my favorite movies. 4/5 is amazing and might only be lacking 5/5 because of personal taste, even though I might know it's a great movie.
Here's a reflection of how I liked the movies and some quotes I liked: -Momento- 4/5 "Where am I? Ok, it looks like I'm chasing this man....whoops, he's chasing me" :P -Cabin Fever-1/5 but it kept me laughing! Especially "What's the gun for?" "It's for the Nxxxxx's" :D -Sector 9- 1.5/5 I just loved the kids mullet -The Cell- 4.5/5 I'm so absolutely in love with the visuals that I can easily cope with the shitty acting. -Indiana Jones 3- 5/5, of course. "Aah, Venice." I was sure to say this outloud when I was in Venice in October ;) -City of the Lost Children- 4/5 Again, I love the visuals and the surreal story. |
Last i watched was Baseketball.
In my opinion 8/10 comedy wise, one of my personal favorites |
Finally watched "This is Spinal Tap" this movie was a satire and that's it's only saving grace. Had this been an actual serious documentary it would have gotten 2/10, but based it being a satire it is very well put together and makes you believe you are following a band at the end of its career, on the whole I give it 7/10
|
I just watched "The Perfect score". Realy funny from start to finish! the acting aint great but theres some desent actors in there... and the plot is simple but good.
id give it a 8/10 for comedy. rewatchability 6/10. and a 7/10 overall. |
ok, so i finally saw Underworld.
what a complete and utter pile of SHIT. i want my money back. its been a while since i've seen a film quite this bad. worst bit... the 'mongrel' scott speedman turned into... and the stupidly insane death of Bill Nighy. now, i love Kate Beckinsale, and i love Bill Nighy, but they couldn't even save this shithouse film. 1/5 (and that mark is only for the sexy outfit!) |
zoolander(DVD) : 7/10 so dumb it gets funny.
beast cop(DVD) : 8/10 excellent Hong Kong Triad movie that rely's on great acting and perfect character development. the italian job (DVD) remake : 6/10 ok-ish movie, nothing special, but mindless fun. |
Gremlins 2 - it had been so long I had forgotten how goofy this movie really is. With various scenes that make you want to cover your eyes in embarrassment for warner brothers. they slipped a bunch of well known actors gave them small roles that ultimately had nothing to do with the movie. There is one part the gremlins actually attack the movie itself and the theater owner calls in Hulk Hogan to yell at the Gremlins, then he apologizes to the watchers saying it won't ever happen again. Granted it was unique but they could only have gotten away with it back in 1990. overall I give it a 5/10. this is because they spend more time building up the individual gremlins and kind of give the plot a backseat on this one.
|
elephant : excellent movie !! the best Van Sant since 'my own private idaho'. 9/10
|
before sunrise (dvd) i saw this movie in a sneak preview when it was first released. i was single at the time and i remember thinking this was a great lovestory. and i wished someday i would live such an experience.
Today , 9 years later, i have had the chance to live such a romance twice (met a (belgian) girl while travelling in asia) and had a similar experience when i met my wife in latin america. the movie is 'all talk' but the chemistry between the leads is excellent & the dialogues are some of the best ever brought to screen. With valentine's day drawing closer do your s.o. a favour and watch the movie together. 9/10 |
welcome to the jungle (aka the rundown) : i enjoyed this movie, the rock rocked in this movie. fun jokes, silly story and humor. the movie refuses to take itself serious. nice break from the 'artistic' movies i saw the last days. 7/10
|
finally saw amelie...4/5
|
butterfly effect.... i dont know what to say... im still in shock... i didnt go in with that high of expectations but wow... best movie i have seen in a long time. i cant wait to get the dvd...
only have seen it once this might be a little high of a score but i give it a 9.4 |
'The Butterfly Effect' - 9/10 here. I didn't know what to think when I first saw Ashton Kutcher in a non-comedic role, but wow. This movie was really good I think. One of the best movies I've seen in awhile. I'll probably pick up the Dvd when it is released.
|
"50 First Dates" - I think that I'd give it a 7/10. A sweet movie, that has quite a few laugh out loud parts. The ending isn't very typical, and I didn't like it at first, but after I thought about it for a minute or two, I thought it was a good way to end the movie. A chick flick for sure, but I recommend it for any couples looking for a funny/sweet flick to see:D.
|
Welcome to Collinwood
For what it is, It's good. It has two of my favorite actors, Michael Jeter, and William H. Macy in it which only made it better. It's not perfect so don't go in expecting it to be. I give it an average 5/10. |
50 First Dates- Saw it on V-day. Very good. 8/10. In my opinion Adam Sandler's best. Don't know that I'd call it a chick flick, but definitely one that both can enjoy. The roadside scenes were hilarious. And Drew was sooooo HOT.
|
Buffalo Soldiers - 6/10
It had it's funny moments, but over all, the protagonist is an asshole and you really don't want to see him succeed. The guys on heroin trying to operate a tank was genius, though. |
I saw "Miracle" last night...
Very good overall. Only weakness was that I felt like it dragged at times and it could have been 10-15 minutes shorter. B+ |
Basic
With John travolta and Samuel L jackson. 7/10 give it time to get going and try and guess the ending ! Finding Nemo 9/10 a great film full of humour PIXar can do no wrong. |
-im a tough grader ;) -
Along Came Polly- 7+/10 It was quite good actually. Ben Stiller is still running along just fine since things like Zoolander. I'd say that Meet the Parents was his worst, then Along Came Polly. When I say worst, I mean that they were all good but in terms of being my least favorite behind films like Tennenbaums and Zoolander. Intolerable Cruelty- 8.5/10 Very good movie! It came out when I was in London for a semester and I was really confused to see the Coen brothers, who I love, making a romantic movie. I figured I'd see it sooner or or later so I skipped it in the theater. The humor was totally Coen-like. Very subtle. Jones and Clooney were both good, Clooney having his same O'Brother acting humor. The story was good too. After seeing Lost in Translation and the ending of Mistic River, I don't see why this movie wasn't at least nominated for best picture. I'm not saying that it is generally best picture material, but compared to other recent films, it was very well rounded, had a good story, was funny throughout, and didn't have a shitty ending. I don't need a climax (as seen in Lost In Translation) but I feel movies recently only touch on some good ideas and humor and don't carry the weight throughout. This film did so very well. Didn't take on more than it could carry and executed it perfectly. ;) |
I went to see "50 First Dates" last night and It was a awesome!!! I don't want to ruin it for you so all I will say is It was one of those laugh your ass off feel good movies..
Anyone who hasn't seen it already... GO SEE IT!! :D |
just bought the DVD of Battle Royale.
i loved this film in the cinemas. and was absolutely shocked to see it sitting there on the local dvd shop's back shelf. absolutely love the way this film is structured. with the countdown of surviving students... and the roll call as they die. great. being a huge BEAT Takeshi fan, its great to see him as his usual calm and intense presence. wonder how long i'll have to wait to see the sequal. 5/5 |

The last movie I saw was The Butterfly Effect. It was certainly better than I expected it to be, but I won't be rushing out to buy the DVD or anything.
|
Finally made it to ROTK...gotta give it a 10/10
took a while [baby at home] but worth it!!! |
borrowed the projector from the office this weekend :
brother : i hadn't seen it yet and i liked it. the story flows a little too fast but still good movie. 7/10 le velo de ghislain lambert : a comedy about cycling. the main actor is benoit poelvoorde, the leading man from 'man bites dog'. he is a very funny actor. great movie, only slightly too long. 8/10 the hulk : second time i watched it and i liked it more than the first time, great visual style and the mix drama/action is ok for me. 7/10 american pie : 2nd time i saw this, and it still makes me laugh, it's not Shakespeare but hey, even Ebert likes it :-) 7/10 harry potter and chamber of secrets : ideal movie to watch at 11 pm on a sunday night, to hold the magic of the weekend a little longer before returning to the stressed workweek. 8/10 if the gods of dvd-delivery are with me, i'll have the chance to see visitor Q tonight !! |
snatch
10/10 fav movie of all t ime |
City of God- 8.5/10
Good story. Great cinematography. I had a few questions of "why" throughout the movie in terms of why some characters did certain things. But it is definitely one of the better movie's I've seen lately. --(spoilers)-- Mystic River- 8.5/10 Again, good story. Directing was pretty good. The acting is what gets my votes. Tim Robbins was amazing. Didn't try too hard, but played a shocking character. The only think keeping the movie from a "9" IMO is the absolutely uncalled for ending. I really feel like Kevin Bacon's character would have turned in Sean Penn. Cmon now, he *did* unjustly kill someone, let alone one of their longtime friends. Friend or not, Bacon seemed to go by the law. I truly don't think his character would have let the murder slide. The "gunshot" with his hand to Penn was pretty...out of place and not funny...if you ask me ;) |
A Mighty Wind:
7/10 -- not a bad movie... rather a mockumentary of a folk-music festival designed at paying homage to a deceased producer. Some great characters, and some superb acting. Actually, the music wasn't bad, either. Still, the movie moved a little slow. I'll have to rent Best In Show to see if this was similar, being by the same creators. |

Belle Epoque-
3/5. Some of the acting was not all that great, and there could have been more to the story. Nevertheless I enjoyed it. |
House of Sand and Fog.
what a fantastic film. this is easily Connelly's best performance. and as for Ben Kingsley, well, this is just par for the course, since everything he does is magnificent. no, i think that last comment is not enough... Kingsley is phenomenal. this film is intense, powerful and a sheer delight to experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - 5/5. |
Jesus' Son- 8/10
Pretty cool movie for one that I've never hear of before. My bud's went to Blockbuster, told them they like Donnie Darko (they just saw it for the first time), and they recomended this film. It's the same in that it's based on one guy and his (sometimes odd) narration as he goes through pretty minimal of experiences through life but looks at them in pretty cool of ways. Check it out. |
Saw Paycheck last night at the cheap movie theater with a bunch of friends.
3/10 - Only because my friend and I are going to school to be engineers, so the fact that Ben Affleck was a badass engineer who got to kick ass with a bigass stick was hilarious. Other than that, the movie was a complete waste of time - very, very predictable. |
I had heard that Paycheck was supposed to be good. It was written by Phillip K. Dick back in the day, the same guy who wrote Blade Runner and other sci-fi novels.
|
Saw Beowulf with Christopher Lambert
It had some terrible acting, a playboy playmate who was topless the entire movie, and the original Lara Croft model. I give it a 4/10 for unintentional humor content. It would have gotter a 5 out of 10, but they didn't actually show any breasts. In terms of being a work of film, it's definitely a 2/10. |
Just Married.
7/10, funny stuff when you're in the right mood. Best watched with your SO like all romantic comedies. |
I just saw Intolerable Cruelty with a friend last night and we both liked it. Really funny and smart movie.
|
Freddy vs. Jason - 2/5
Bad movie. Bad. But not as bad as Jason X, and it was fairly decent considering all it had going for it. |
peppermint candy : wonderfull movie. 9/10. korean movie , starts at the end (the same way as memento & irreversible) and then tracks back to find what lead to the end. about the things we lose while advancing trough life. very touching.
irreversible : also a movie that starts at the end and then tracks back. contains 2 very graphic scenes and will shock u. but beneath the shock there are good performances by the actors and a powerfull message. 7/10 visitor q : 'Miike takashi'-shot on video movie that contains the usual crazyness. not his best work. 6.5/10 armageddon : popcorn-movie that is very enjoyable untill they leave the russian spacestation, then it goes ridicoulus. 5/10 the rock : more Bay crazyness. 6/10 . bad boys 2 : got bad critics here, but i enjoyed it a lott. 7/10 gothika : flawed movie. Hale Berry is very good though. got athmosphe but lacks story & logic. 6/10 |
American Wedding. Not a comedy fan really, I usually stick to horror/sci-fi/fantasy movies, but this one made me laugh. Alot. 8/10.:)
|
The last movie I seen was Butterfly Effect. If you haven't seen it, see it. From 1-10, I'll give it a 9.
|
Butterfly Effect was pretty good...enjoyed the disturbing plot...9 sounds about right whoizzy...'whats cracking fellow ninja'
|
Box of Moonlight with John Turturro and Sam Rockwell. I liked it alot. It was a simple movie about life that really got to me.
|
School of Rock
normally i think Jack Black is mediocre, but i thought he was excellent in this movie, and it made me laugh a lot. good movie. |
American Splendor on DVD.
That is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and it deserved a LOT more credit than it was given. Brilliant acting, casting, and directing. |
League of Extrordinary Gentlemen- it was very boring, plot was horrible and the editing sucked. :(:(
|
Lord of the Rings (the 3rd one..)
Very awesome, except I hated that the ending was different from the book's ending. Kind of ruined it for me.. |
We just rented Leage of Extraordinary Gentleman and *BLAH* was it boring. No depth or structure to the story/plot. Quite cheezy and the effects & editing were not great at all.
EDITED: just noticed my husband already replied! |
The Passion of the Christ - (category: drama) [rating: 4/10]
The highlights of this film were the sets, music, visual effects, and the acting by a few of the main characters (Jesus, Mary, Pilate). Unfortunately, I think the film lacked some in quality. The story itself, surprisingly, had my friend lost somewhat. He knew the basic story, but he mentioned that the film didn't tell who some of the characters were, etc. I also thought it wasn't very good fiction, and the back story could have been more detailed to make me better understand the true motivation of Jesus was. I'm writing this as though I had no idea what Christianity is, and think that's a good way to judge the storytelling aspects of "The Passion". The movie really left me shockingly unmoved, mostly because I got bored of the pacing. I think Gibson overused slow motion here. The ending was also disappointingly drab. Simpy put, the book's better. :p |
Barbershop 2 - 8/10
Expect more of the same from the original Barbershop, except this time without the use of the "n-word". |
rosemary's baby : A movie that doesn't seem to age. I was surprised it survives multiple viewings over several years. (8/10)
Ju-On (the Grudge) : I was a little dissapointed by this movie. I hoped it to be great japanese horror (like the ring , pulse , dark water ...) but i didn't think it was very scary. if u want to see a scary movie look for "tale of two sisters". that was way better. 5/10 Monster Inc. : great pixar entertainment (7/10) Repo Man : funny 80ies chaos. Alex Cox was one of my favourites directors for a long time. it's a pitty he never had the chance to direct "fear and loathing in las vegas". 7/10 |
Lost in Translation
I really enjoyed it, but wouldn't have picked it over ROTK for best picture. I thought that the pace and lack of forwarding action was perfect, as it's a movie about people disenchanted with life, stuck in a foreign country with nothing to do. I'm glad I didn't listen to the people who said this movie was boring. I had a great experience. 7/10 |
