Donnie Dark0 - 9/10 - Do I need to say anything more about it?

House of the Dead - 1/10 - The tragic thing is that having seen both this and The Hulk in the same year means that one of those movies will not be the worst movie that I saw last year... Why the hell did he cut the video game into the movie as if it were part of the film? Why? WHY?

crewsor 03-08-2004 06:30 PM

Pink Floyd- The Wall. I just got a new dvd player and picked up the wall along with it.
Thought it would be cool to have on dvd. Its been ages since I watched it and I thought maybe I could follow it better now that I'm not in a perennial state of altered consciousness.
No such luck though. Still couldn't follow the plot, but the music and the animations are still superb. Overall I liked it a lot, but you kind of need to be into the music or just stoned out of your mind I guess.

oasis : korean movie with unconventional protagonists. it plays with our own preconceptions & stereotyping. and show us some things about ourself and about the characters in the movie.
from the director of "pepermint candy". the strangest lovestory i've seen in a long time.
must see !! 8/10

sailor 03-09-2004 06:57 AM

The Missing: I like Westerns, so this gets points for that, but the whole movie just seemed kinda disjointed, like it hadnt been planned out well. 6/10.

Just saw it last night. I agree with all that. And Cate Blanchett's Spanish has an elven accent...

FlorentinoAriza 03-11-2004 01:26 AM

tears of the sun : a good concept brutally murdered. fake movie, bad acting, worst soundtrack. the worst movie i have seen this year. worse than 'the core' and 'gothika' even. nice camerawork, but it's lost.
4/10

CinnamonGirl 03-11-2004 01:45 AM

Mona Lisa Smile last night on DVD...it was okay. I expected it to be Dead Poet's Society with chicks, but it didn't really measure up...I think the most I got out of it was being glad I was born in the 80s :p 5/10.

ugg.. i totally understand what you mean. i wanted to stab myself in the face while watching that movie. but i couldn't just shut it off cuz i actually paid the $3 to rent it. horrible, horrible movie. horrible.

Hidalgo:

Since Im home on Spring Break I decided to take my little brother to a movie. He picked this one. It was entertaining, though a little less than great. A good adventure, and for what it set out to do, it succeeds. Not a great movie by any stretch--it felt disjointed in parts, and some parts felt pointless, but I had a good time. 7.5/10.

I give it 5 out of 5.

I somehow got talked into seeing it at the theatre...which meant a lot more than $3. Bleah.

Saw Back to the Future for the upteenth time yesterday...I love that movie. Okay, it might not be the greatest, but as a personal favorite, I give it a 9/10 :D

Bonesaw 03-12-2004 09:09 PM

finished watching cowboy bebop the movie (knocking on heaven's door)

4/5 or 8/10 depending on who's scale is being used. :)

the animation was spectacular but it was overall just a longer episode.

Batman976 03-12-2004 10:47 PM

Been a while since I've posted in this thread. I've seen plenty of movies, just haven't had the energy to rate them. However, I just finished watching American Splendor and had to comment on it. I can't quite place what I really liked about this movie, but it was very entertaining. It was funny when it needed to be, and it was serious when it needed to be. The comic book style was very fitting for the subject, and it was cool actually being able to see the people the characters were based on.

I'm definately going to watch this one again before I have to return it to the rental store.

Hollywood Homicide

9/10: Hilarious movie with a decent plot. We enjoyed it a lot.

and I rhymed.

philosopherking 03-12-2004 11:21 PM

Spartan

Just got back from seeing it tonight, great film. David Mamet does a great job with dialogue and making a generally very intelligent film yet again. Like many of his films, surprises abound, which add to the fun. 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.

opackfan 03-13-2004 12:27 AM

just got back from starsky and hutch. I was going in to it expecting the worst and came out generally pleased, the korean boy and the Spoiler: fact that they overshot the boat at the end got the most enjoyment out of me. 7.5ish/10

I just saw Secret Window yesterday. I was really looking forward to this one and was pretty pleased overall. I would say 7/10.

Dilbert1234567 03-14-2004 11:15 AM

i saw phone booth last night,

i never thought to watch it when it was in theaters, but it was the onlything that looked decent at the video store. well it was good, the hookers are anoying but beyond that it is an excelent movie, a bit short (under 90 min) but the time fits the movie fine.

9.5/10

FlorentinoAriza 03-16-2004 08:16 AM

the tesseract : oxide pang directs a garland screenplay to his own novel. very stylish but with flawed narrative flow. still good . 6.5/10
immortal : Erik Bilal directed a story from his own comic-books. Again great visuals but here the actors seem to be lost in a world of blue screens (George Lucas-itis). but the comicbook like visuals make it worth a look. 6/10
alexandra's project nice movie by Rolf de Heer about a man getting his birthday-gift of a lifetime. low budget, but good acting. could have been edited a little. some parts drag a little. 7/10
the touch I was warned by bad reviews on the internet, but it was even worse. 4/10
bowling for columbine (DVD) , touching movie that makes you think about stereotypes and society. 7/10
dog soldiers (DVD) funny horror movie that winks excessively to other movies.
7/10

frequency(DVD) : nice movie if u don't mind bad time travelling logic. 7/10

my little eye (dvd) : not perfect , but still interresting twist on the "big brother" format. 6/10
el crimen de padre amaro : (dvd) nice movie , touching story, great acting, 7/10

Ugh, I really disagree. I thought the movie uninspired. Good dialog, yes, but was completely uninterested in the story.

2 out of 4 stars from me.

boden11 03-18-2004 12:53 AM

I just saw Spartan yesterday and while I too thought the storyline faulty (not enough reason to care about the abducted girl...just for starters) I don't see how you liked the dialogue!! All the lines were like 'hmmm lemme throw out some hard ass spy words so it pumps the movie up and gets you into it.' But the director purposely didn't want to give you enough to get into it. Like he wanted to just keep everything in the dark until his 'tada'. I'd give it a 6/10.
--
Anyways I did see Mystic River today (mostly because I was bored and it scored the highest on that tomato movie page for current movies). Man was I disappointed. The character types were over played and even their actors had done similar roles.

Tim Robbins being mentally awry after a tramautic experience?? Hmm a little like JACOB'S LADDER!!

Sean Penn vowing to revenge the death of a child...well holy crap, he just did that in 21 Grams !!!

Kevin Bacon a cop??? NO WAYY!

My personal fave was Laurence Fishburne being the ONLY BLACK in the entire movie and his name is "Whitey Powers" you just can't make this stuff up folks. Anyways the movie feels drawn out and uncut and way too filled with the brim with coincidences. The entire movie hinges on people finding things out just seconds too late, and with the main cast living in the same neighborhood as they did when they were children (riiiiiiight). The ending is weak and anti-climatic, especially the unnecessary parade scene (what was the point of that???). 6/10 --only because it's like a decent Law&Order episode with some big names in it.

chinese ghost story 2 : (dvd) . campy movie i really enjoy. it's silly, has cheap & dated fx but i just like it. it awakes the little kid in me. 7/10
parasite dolls : manga trilogy which i found utterly boring, i fell asleep. avoidable 3/10
sky high : the latest movie by Ryuhei Kitamura, shown in world premiere , in presence of the director !!!! The public went crazy (Brussels Fantasy Festival) . He was a very sympathic guy, spent a long time with the picture & autograph hunters. The movie itself lacked the kinetic vibe of Versus, but we got more story , more romance & more acting in return. not as good as versus though, some rushed parts (bad lighting, cheap feel) still interesting 7/10
wonderfull days : korean manga that mixed 2d - 3d & maquettes to achieve a truly superb visual style. the story was very simple, but i enjoyed it. also great use of music. must see !!! i'm already tracking the dvd for this. 8/10

NoLa 03-20-2004 08:36 AM

Sex and Lucia. 3/5

It started off good, but then lost it's edge. It got kind of confusing mid-way through, trying to keep track of all the stories. The acting didn't blow me away either. The cinematography was good though, beautiful colors.

silent_jay 03-20-2004 09:48 AM

Jack Ruby 03-20-2004 11:42 AM

I just got back from seeing Gothika. I didn't go in with high expectations, and saw a very good thriller with a pretty stupid anticlimax at the end of it. Cut out the last fifteen minutes, add a +1 super bonus point for having Halle Berry on-screen most of the time, and you've got a 4/5 movie.

FlorentinoAriza 03-22-2004 02:27 AM

azumi : energetic swordplay movie, A female assasin (Azumi) goes out to kill some warlords and their henchmen. azumi could have 'the bride' for breakfast. way better than kill bill imho. 7.5/10

goodbye lenin : funny movie about a son trying to hide the fall of the berlin wall from his mother who was in a coma during the change of the DDR. 7/10

This was the last movie I saw. The people that are involved in this story are just so damn strange it's hard not to like. It didn't hurt that it starred Paul Giamatti, on of my favorite actors.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I loved this movie. Such an original piece of work and brilliant acting by both Carrey and Winslet. Charlie Kaufman wrote it and if you'll be able to tell if you're at all familiar with some of his past work like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.

I give it 9/10

There's so many little things in this movie I can't wait till it's released on dvd so I can watch it again.

Just saw The Lady Killers last night. Wasn't overly impressed. It was generally funny throughout the movie, and it had its moments, but overall, I was pretty disappointed. Tom Hanks accent/character started to get old pretty quickly, but I guess I would consider it an "ok" movie. 3.5/5 stars.

HOTK is awesome. The sequel, titled "The Devil's Rejects" is due out this year sometime (hopefully). It's in pre-production now.

Dawn of the Dead remake... very awesome. Loved the ending, the one that half the people in the audience missed because they walked out as the credits started.

I just don't understand why it was named after Romero's Dawn of the Dead. The original was a sequel, so when it started off, the zombie epidemic already plauged the nation.

Honestly, this movie could've been named something completely different, as it didn't remotely follow suit as a sequel to Night of the Living Dead (original or remake).

..but that's just piddly nitpicky stuff. Other than that: Grade A zombie horror.

sailor 04-02-2004 04:38 PM

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 4.5/5

Awesome. Thats the only way I can describe it. Absolutely wonderful. There was one subplot that was totally unnecessary, which keeps it from a five, but other than that, one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Batman976 04-02-2004 10:46 PM

ironchefkorea 04-02-2004 11:31 PM

it was inevitable. I knew it was going to happen eventually. I rented Freddy vs. Jason, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but still pretty terrible. It took an interesting turn from the repetitive garbage I was expecting when Freddy used the tranqs to bring Jason into the dream world.

I'd give it a 5.5/10

I know what you mean. I saw it at $1 theatre and thought it sucked. But then saw it on dvd, and liked alittle more. Now after seeing it 3-4 times, i think its pretty good. But it is quite disturbing.

hilbert25 04-03-2004 01:01 PM

The Rundown, it wasn't the most.... sophisticated of movies. But I'd hate to say it, it did achieve it's purpose of making a good cheesy action movie. Plus Sean William Scott got the crap kicked out of him... The Rock was ok, Rosario Dawson is hot, and the little rebel guys were awesome.

I give it a 7 out of 10.

cherriesue 04-03-2004 01:42 PM

Bent with Clive Owen & Lothaire Bluteau
it isn't the most uplifting film but Lothaire Bluteau's acting in it is amazing

Rodney 04-03-2004 02:54 PM

Hellboy -- 6 out of 10. Great visuals, good acting and character development by Ron Perlman in the title role, and some nice scenes here and there, but the run-run-chase-chase plot just left me yawning after a while. Lots of blood and guts and Lovecraftian monsters, but sadly, not enough thrills.

First 10 minutes are great, too.

k1ng 04-03-2004 06:36 PM

War Photographer - Documentary that follows James Nachtwey, famous war photographer, around as he takes war/poverty pictures. A small video camera is attached to his camera so you can see/hear what he does.

9/10

Touching the Void - A true story about a mountain climbing accident where someone with a broken leg fell down a cliff into a crevasse and was left for dead, but then managed to climb/crawl his way back to the base camp with no water (and no food) for a couple of days.

I give it a 7 out of 10. I had just finished reading the book and they left a few crucial things out of the events that ruined it for me.

Great movie, hilarious. I'm a really big fan of mafia movies, and this one is up there on my list of favorites, The Godfather being number one.

The Wind Will Carry Us. 3.5/5
Filmed in Iran,(english subtitles) beautiful scenery and the village is also beautiful. Good storyline too.

DUMB & DUMBERER: 8/10
It was actually pretty funny. Some of it was kinda cheesy, but they did an amazing job casting the actors for the roles of Harry & Lloyd. They immitated them pretty darn well and what was truly funny was some of the *jokes* that you would only get from seeing Dumb & Dumber- when we saw some of the things, it reminded us of things that were portrayed in the other movie.

SERVING SARA: 8/10
It was funny & cute. Matthew Perry of course did a wonderful job. He still brings on his "Chandler" sarcasm. Not a movie I would buy, really, but it was funny. I really can't wait to see The Whole 10 Yards.

Speed_Gibson 04-06-2004 05:59 PM

last film I watched was the Maltese Falcon DVD last night. Far better than most of the drek out there now and in glorious B&W.
And of course it is Bogart's first major starring role, Greenstreet's debut, and Houston's directorial debut as well.
===
Last one before that was The Third Man - five out of five in my opinion, and it spawned the excellent radio series that also starred George Orson Welles.

Old School

I hoped it would be funnier. Vince Vaughn was the only funny guy in the movie. There were certainly a few funny moments, but otherwise I was disappointed.

I wished Wil Farrell would have been funnier. That was the big let down. Plus, Jeremy Piven was terribly cast as the dean. Piven should have been one of the frat guys.

SecretMethod70 04-11-2004 01:32 AM

I've watched a few recently - all on DVD.

Lost in Translation: 9/10
Once Upon a Time in Mexico: 7/10
Underworld 4/10

LiT was an EXCELLENT movie. But it's probably also one of those that someone would either love or hate based on the reactions I've seen from some.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico was great and a nice continuation from Desperado. It was quite rediculous at many points, but it goes into the "legend with embellishments" aspect of the story that it's portraying. All in all it was a fun movie to watch, but no deep message, beyond the importance of freedom.

Underworld was....meh. I mean, I guess the action was nice, but the plot inconsistancies were sickening and, while I've seen the love sotry part of it referred to as "underplayed," to me it seemed non-existent. The "love" came out of nowhere with absolutely no impetus other than the director or writer saying "shoot, I guess we need to make them in love now so that the movie works out the way we want it to." REALLY disappointing. Only good thing about it was the action and the fact it involved vampires which is an automatic plus. Too bad the vampires were weak as Hell and didn't really use very much vampire-ness at all.

rockzilla 04-11-2004 06:16 AM

Party Monster with Macauley Culkin and Seth Green.

Culkin plays Michael Alig, a 1980's New York party promoter and king of the Club Kids. The movie covers Alig's rise to fame and his drug-addled downfall, which is punctuated by the murder of his friend and drug dealer Angel.
Seth Green puts on a surprisingly good performace as Alig's "best friend" James St. James, Alig's 'mentor' in the ways of being a club kid, taching him how to be flamboyant, glamourous and selfish in a classic scene set in a donut shop. The two of them work very well together, especially given the strange dynamic of their relationship (they appear to be using each other for power and status, despite seemingly not really liking each other).
The plot starts to fall apart near the end, as though it was getting in the way of showing the decadence (and the consequences of it) of the characters.
I give it a 7/10. If you enjoyed movies like 54 or Blow, you'll probably get a kick out of this.

I went and saw The Ladykillers last night. I thought it was laugh-out-loud funny the entire movie. Hell, I enjoyed it so much that I considered going back to see it tonight. I'll probably try to get back to the theater to see it before it's gone, and will for sure buy it when it comes out on DVD.

I watched Kill Bill Vol 1 on DVD yesterday. At first, I did't really know what to expect so the movie wasn't that good, but after realizing that the movie isn't like Pulp Fiction or Resevior Dogs it got ALOT better. It's a Modern day "out for revenge," bloodbath, Kung Fu Flick, and a really good one. It's hard to compare it to Pulp Fiction, so I'll give it the same rating 9/10.

I watched timeline too, It was THAT DAMN BAD.. 2/10 Paul walker can't act for shit.

My girlfriend drug me to see "The Prince And Me" starring Julia Stiles. For me, it was aight. I mean, there was nothing about this movie that really took me by surprise. The plot was pretty much a very good interpretation of the common "Boy meets girl" story. Plus the girl becomes a queen and all that crap, and it's just a hugely predictable movie. But my main problem with the movie is that it's so safe. It doesn't break out any story lines or develop many characters outside of the main two.

It wasn't spectacular, but then, it wasn't gawdawful either.

6/10

Walking Tall with the Rock and Johnny Knoxville.

4/5

I hate wrestling, but the Rock is so fucking cool. It's great that he finally got acting lessons too. It's all kicking ass, acting cool, and kicking more ass, and then Knoxville is funny.

Great action movie, very entertaining!

Ditto! I saw this and laughed my butt off the whole time. Great flick!

Paradise Lost 04-13-2004 05:11 PM

I finally got around to seeing Austin Powers: Goldmember, I have
to say, in terms of outright comedy, it was at least an 8, but
in terms of originality and it's general 'making fun of old 1960's
British movies,' it just doesn't compare to the first one.

8.363/10!

Speed_Gibson 04-13-2004 07:47 PM

just watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty on DVD again (1947, Produced by Samuel Goldwyn).
-> Virginia Mayo in one of her first major starring roles, looking lovely as ever; she was 27 at the time, and is still around last I knew.
-> Danny Kaye playing at least 5 or 6 completely different roles between the mouse-ish main character and the various dream sequences
-> of course the Goldwyn Girls
-> Boris Karloff playing his usual creepy role to perfection
-> A good storyline that holds it all together
-> not quite so sure about the technicolor, might have been better in B&W but it is a treat seeing extensive shots of 1947 New York City in colour.

9/10 in my opinion

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: 9.5/10

What an amazing movie this was. I had high expectations for the film because of it's writer (Kaufman who did adaptation and being john malcovich) and one of it's director's (Gondry, who is just amazing with visuals). Jim Carrey proved again how good of an actor he can be. Definitely check out this film if you liked The Truman Show or if you like 'dreamy love films' (a term I just made up ;) ) Also, it kept on reminding me of the feel that Lost in Translation was attempting to give off but failed miserably in doing so, much in my own opinion. I can't wait to see it again!

"Seven Chances" with Buster Keaton 4/5
His timing is great

Kill Bill Volume 2 - Fuckin' amazing. One of the better movies I've ever seen. I highly recommend that everyone go and see it. 10/10

Hell Boy
7.5/10

Need more action from flame girl, Hell Boy is kinda smaller than I expected, I thought he's like 10ft tall. Need to keep the horns, he looks a lot more bad ass with the horns. More monsters, and make the movie longer!!!

Good movie nonetheless

Secret Window, completely underated, sure it wasn't entirely original and I saw the twist coming as soon as there was a knock on the door but the film was incredibly enjoyable. Depp never ceases to amaze me with his meticulous performances! Also, the fact that Depp's character was so similar to myself made the story feel more real.

8.5/10 Will be buying the DVD

I just saw "The Core." It was soo bad! But we knew it would be. We only watched it so that we could make fun of it the same way they did to old movies on Mystery Science Theature 3000. We were laughing at it the whole way through. Definately a good one for making fun of, but I wouldn't watch it any other way.

Cheaper By The Dozen- 10/10

It was actually the first family-oriented move in a LONG time (probably ever) that I absolutely enjoyed. It was hilarious- and I loved all of the little innuendos from Smallville of the oldest son (played by Tom Welling- Clark Kent)...."Farm Boy"......and his red hat......

Very good. It also had that little girl (the trouble-maker) who dances in the Missy Elliot videos- she's intense!

I couldn't watch it. Even listening to the violence and the blood splatter made me nautious. But at the end of the movie, I did enjoy the last few songs.....very beautiful. I don't particularly care for Uma Thurman. Some of the most recent Quinton movies I don't care for. Just no substance- doesn't do anything for me.

Man On Fire

8 out of 10. Another bad guy role for Denzel, and he pulls it off with conviction.

FaderMonkey 04-26-2004 11:05 AM

Kill Bill (both volumes together)

9.5/10 - fucking great movie....that's all I have to say

assilem 04-26-2004 01:04 PM

Kill Bill Vol. 2. I just saw it in the theater. I saw Vol. 1 when it was in theater. It was a good end to a great movie. I would rather have had them released as one long 5 hour movie but it was good the way it ended up. Vol. 2 could have been a little bloodier but the story and character development was better than Vol. 1.

Vol. 1: 5 out of 5
Vol. 2: 4 out of 5
Both as one movie: 6 out of 5. (I know, it doesn’t seem possible)

Van Wilder - another hilarious movie...."P.S. Shut the fuck up" 10/10

Hellboy - utter disapointment, way too long, boring. Pathetic attempt at an enjoyable movie 0/10

House of Sand and Fog

I think the book was better
