Superman Returns: LOVED IT. I thought Routh and Spacey did a fantastic job, the story was fine, the spoiler was surprising. The only quibble I have with it is Kate Bosworth...she lacked the spunk of the original Lois and there was no chemistry between her and Superman at all...she was just there the entire movie. 4.5/5

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Meh. To paraphrase a review I heard on the radio...there were moments of cinematic bliss, but more moments of cinematic blah. The best part is the last minute of the movie, and you have to sit through 20 minutes of "Isn't this movie OVER yet" to get to that minute. I'm sure I'll go see the third one though. 2.5/5

Kadath 07-16-2006 05:54 PM

Ultimate Avengers:The Movie 5/10

They really pulled a lot of the punches from Ultimates (Henry Pym is just mean to his wife, not abusive, the Hulk doesn't eat anyone, etc). Animation quality was also disappointing. Voice acting was fine, though. I hope they take some more chances with the second one.

Grancey 07-17-2006 10:23 AM

Superman Returns
This was good, it was fun and I enjoyed it. But while watching I just couldn't help remembering how excited I was when the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie came out. There was so much build-up and anticipation. It was SUPERMAN!!! I miss that with movies today. It's just not the same.

ngdawg 07-17-2006 05:50 PM

"Cars"
You don't even have to like driving to enjoy this. Everything, from storyline to animated details, is perfect.
And, should you happen to like racing, NASCAR, etc., this movie's cameo's and quick jokes will have you hysterical. 10/10, 5 *****, etc.

m0rpheus 07-23-2006 08:21 AM

Clerks 2
Okay first off this movie... it aint for everyone. The humor is much dirtier than most of Kevin Smith's movies and I loved it. Plot? Oh god I could see where it was going within a few minutes of the movie. Who cares. I was fucking laughing my ass off the entire movie. Is it as good as Clerks? No. But that's okay. BTW stick around during the credits to see who Kevin Smith thanks... and there is a lot of them, and they are damn funny.
4/5

My Super Ex Girlfriend - 85%

A great movie to take your longtime SO to, although probably not so much for a first date. If you've ever had a crazy ex, then you'll love this.

Clerks 2 - 95%

Funny, funny & funny. If you like Smith's movies, this is a must see. If you do not, don't bother, this won't convert you, it'll only drive you farther away. Spoiler: Beware the Silence of the Lambs bit forewarning you of what is to come.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest - 70%

A good movie, but not as good as the first. It definitly gets an A+ for style, however.

viper11885 07-24-2006 01:50 PM

Inside Man.

Quite fun and entertaining. Enjoyed it lots for a rented movie.

noodle 07-24-2006 03:26 PM

Brick... Indie film, I think. Fairly good, somewhat predictable but Lucas Haas is one creepy dude. Interesting plot twists. Drugs, violence, high school drama and gangs... with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lucas Haas. Funny combination. I liked it, though. 7/10 for some of the parts that were completely unrealistic for high schoolers.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift... First, I was looking for entertainment and won't comment on the plot, which was very predictable and classic Asian themed. Annoying Southern boy challenges Yakuza nephew over a girl and bragging rights. But the driving was awesome and the special effects were realistic most of the time. Which is difficult in a movie with people hauling tail on the road all the time. 8/10... lost points because of the flipping obnoxious fake Southern accent.

Pirates 2 It was entertaining and the special effects were great. Yes, it was too long, but tolerable, unlike say... Alexander. Anyone else recognize the sea monster from the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride at Disney World? Kracken was almost identical to the art on the walls as you waited in line for the ride. It used to be my favorite ride before they replaced it with Ariel's Photo-riffic Water Playground. I also appreciate the way that the movies continue to recreate scenes from the ride at Disney... I laughed every time they showed Tortuga. The dog, the pigs, and the prostitutes running in circles. Classic. 8/10

The Devil Wears Prada Definite disappointment. I loved the book and how sarcastic the tone was throughout. Miranda was pure evil in the novel. In the movie, she was Cruella de Ville. Bland. 5/10

Hitman I love Jet Li. He always ends up playing the innocent that doesn't want to hurt anyone, but kicks serious ass anyway. Loved the clean fighting. 7/10

Candy Weird Australian movie about heroin. Heath Ledger is strangely convincing as a junkie. Realistic depiction. 7/10

Lots of other Jet Li's including Legend of the Red Dragon (loved the kid, funky costumes, great exhibition of skills--8/10), Swordsman II (again, great skills, traditional storyline--7/10), and The Evil Cult (truly bizarre but entertaining--8/10).

Okay. Done for now. I've been laid up with an arm injury. Nothing else to do.

Kadath 07-24-2006 04:14 PM

Pirates 2 -- 7/10

Wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe, but I did get bored with about half an hour to go. Could have used less filler and foolish humor. Sexual innuendo was in full effect.

Doom -- 5/10

Also not nearly as bad as I'd heard. Actually quite tolerable until the FPS sequence and the end boss fight. Given the thin source material(solo Marine against the hordes of Hell, three times), an effective translation to popular media.

biznatch 07-24-2006 06:50 PM

Thelma and Louise.
I'm a guy, so I think that changes my perception of the movie. So 'ill try and not be too harsh. Overall I though it was boring and not too funny. (and come on, who blows up a huge gas container truck in the desert where anyone can see the smoke from miles away when they're on the run?)

Clerks II 8 out of 10. I haven't laughed that much in a long time.

Mantus 07-24-2006 09:46 PM

Clerks II.

5/10.

The humor was great. Dante was a terrible character portrayed by a terrible actor. The love themes were soooooooooo lame. The philosophy offered is just idiotic. It's like the worst possible drama film combined a great comedy and out comes a waste of my money and time.

+1 for the hotness and wonderful acting of Rosario Dawson.

so...6/10

Superman Returns

I had no idea he could lift stuff? I mean at first I wasn't sure, but after the fifth object I was like, wow! He sure can lift stuff.

Kevin Spacy was great. Infact I wish they just made this: Lex Luther Returns. That would have been 10/10. Instead SuperChump...gets 7/10...it was entertaining, good directing, lame script.

Scaner Darkly.

First off - I really liked Waking Life. The adds also made it seem rather futuristic and Matrix-ish. Well it's no Waking Life and not much of a Sci-Fi which adds up to a movie about druggies. I recomend watching Spun instead.

5/10

My Super Ex-Girlfriend

Not a movie to take your prudish parents to, but I thought it was hilarious. There's one scene with a shark that's jumping around biting for the main guy's crotch and I was in hysterics it was so funny.

I'd recommend it, and if you don't want to pay to see a movie at least rent it later.

I'm going to own it one day. I thought it was awesome.

This was cute. I enjoyed it until the end was in sight, and that seemed to take forever...........The early credits are important, so don't leave too soon

SAM821 07-27-2006 02:51 PM

Clerks II

I gotta give it a 10!

I did not expect the move to be as funny as it was. I laughed the whole time. The plot? it was OK, I mean what do you expect from a low budget comedy that takes place in one location. Its like a porno, the plots arent really supposed the thrill/captivate you. But did i meantion how funny it was??? It was by far his funniest movie out of all of them. And I have them all on DVD, so needless to say I was impressed. I also give an extra kudos to have Rosario Dawson on there... that chick is FINE!!!!! man, every movie she is in she gets better and better.

a must see.

Evil Dead

Fantastic use of make up
Lots of blood and gore
Freaky moments
Not as predictable
Demons get alot of screen time ++
Nice ending
Rented this classic at the store and it's better than most of the horror films today

Pirates 2

Watch the credits until the very end.....

I got tired. The costumes, makeup and special effects were great. I was looking for more storyline. Oh well.
Nevertheless, the surprise after the credits was worth it.

noahfor 07-30-2006 10:51 PM

Clerks 2

I usually don't think movies are funny, and dirty comedy doesn't appeal to me more than any other kind of comedy, but I actually laughed out loud during this movie, and had a grin on my face the rest of the time. I liked the plot, too. It has good characters who actually have character. Even if it hadn't been funny I still would have liked it.

10/10

There are better movies, but it still gets a 10.

Gilda 07-30-2006 11:14 PM

Saving Face *** out of ****

Wil is a young surgeon whose mother disapproves of her and her relationship with a ballet dancer because it violates her sense of propriety in the insulated Chinese American culture in which they live. Things are turned on their heads when mother turns up pregnant outside of marriage, won't say who the father is, and moves in with Wil.

It hits all the standard romance cliches, the partner who works too often, disapproving parents, conflicting careers, choosing between a big promotion and love, but it hits them all well, and the acctresses are all quite convincing in their parts.

There's a very nice touch near the end that I'd never seen before. Wil discovers a letter written to her mother by the baby's father and begins reading it in voiceover. About halfway through, she hits on a clue that tells her who the man is, and from that point it's his voice we hear rading the letter, and even that is used to nice effect a few minutes later. I love it when a filmmaker finds a new way to present one of the old conventions.

probably one of the top 5 funniest movies ive ever seen, i thought it blew away the first one (i rewatched it 2hours before seeing the sequel)
i was laughing hard the entire time and it even prompted a "What the fuck" outloud from my firend who went with, you can probably guess which scene that came out in.
totally awesome movie
oh and beerfest trailer also looked pretty good

I'm in the midst of this right now [I have trouble seeing movie in one sitting, I get too distracted. If I sit there for too long, I get too tired. :p ] So far, it's very good, and there's a couple allusions to Maltese Falcon in it. The high school backdrop does seem a bit too unrealistic, but I just try more to suspend my disbelief. It could have worked better with college as the backdrop.

Red Eye - This one I actually saw in one setting, since it's only about 70-80 minutes. Good pacing, mcadams and murphy did a good job of acting. Pleasantly surprised.

Pirates of the Carribean 2 10/10

Some would argue that it was light on plot, with more action than the first.
Slightly true, but once again, they introduced characters that were interesting and had unique personalities.I also really enjoyed the twist to classic lore from the time period.

Davy Jones was awesome.

MichaelFarker 08-01-2006 04:39 PM

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: 4/10

If you are a big fan of Disney-style horror, you should rent this eventually. Do not expect a good action movie.

I like the characters in the first one and I cared what happened to them. Not here. Even favorite characters in the first where vague, wandering, and unlikable in the second.
I enjoyed the action in the first one. Not in the second. Contrary to popular opinion, the action sequences seemed much more engaging, dramatic, and entertaining in the first movie as compared to the second.
Romance and humor made no appearance in the sequel, unlike the original.
The undead were annoying in the sequel whereas they were pretty cool in the first Pirates.
As a commited action movie fan, I wish I had not gone to the theatre to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

Once Upon a Time in America

Aspiring directors should watch this movie, then kill themselves or consider a career in IT, because nobody can be that good.

Grasshopper Green 08-05-2006 04:53 PM

We just got home from Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (or whatever it's called), and I loved it. It was hilarious, if a little stereotypical. This makes up for Ron Burgundy and that stupid soccer movie that Will Ferrell did last year. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are both funny as hell the whole time, and it's probably the second best movie I've seen this summer. 4/5

Willravel 08-05-2006 05:05 PM

I saw it last week, but I still can't get it out of my head. Miami Vice is one of the best things Michael Mann has ever done, and I loved Last of the Mochicans, Colateral, Heat, and pretty much everything he's ever done. While I dispise Colin Ferrel (a.k.a. Alexander the Gay) with every fiber of my being, I think that he was somehow perfect for his role. The thing that stood out the most was the lack of acting...and how refreshing it was. I'm really getting sick of overdramatic actors and actresses bullshitting their way through fantasies...and being commended for their acting ability. Miami Vice was intended to be a gritty avdenture, and it delivered on every level. Jamie Foxx gave another surprising performance. Having seen the Jamie Foxx show and Ray, I'm familiar with his best and worst. This was among his best. Yes, he was funny, but it was subdued. It never overshadowed what was going on. I believed that the movie could really happen.

My only gripe is the lack of Edward James Olmos. Every movie should have Edward James Olmos.

9/10

Then on to Taledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby...this was funny as hell, but dumb as hell, too. Will Ferrel is a very talented comedian, but I feel like this movie was too deliberate. Maybe I was expecting too much. Spoiler: The knife in the leg scene was among the funniest things eve on screen, but it still wasn't on par with other screwball comedies like Austin Powers or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. All-in-all, a great way to wate a few hours laughing at harmless comedy, but it doesn't live up to Ferrel's ability.

6.8/10

Kadath 08-05-2006 07:09 PM

will: it was good of you to use the spoiler tag there, but I think the cat's out of the bag; it's in most commercials I've seen.

The last movie I saw was Wargames. 7/10, although the technology doesn't date well at all, and it's getting harder to remember nuclear brinkmanship (thank god).

JumpinJesus 08-06-2006 12:20 AM

Shesus and I went to see "The Descent" yesterday. I have to admit that I was ready to despise this movie from the trailers I saw a few months back but I ended up rather liking it.

The advertisemtnt for this movie compares it to Alien. I believe the comparison is made from the sense of isolation present in both films. What I liked about Descent is the presence of some very real suspense long before the horror story begins.

I'll give this one 8/10. There were some elements that could have been improved and there were a couple of horror movie cliches used that weren't necessary, but aside from that it was a very enjoyable film.

Just saw this myself too.. and I have to say its the scariest movie i've ever seen. If you let yourself get sucked into it, its rediculously scary. Very well done, well shot, acting was good..

Best horror movie ive seen in a really long time.

Dont see this movie if you are in any way claustrophobic

Miami Vice

I liked this movie alot more than I expected to. I didn't want to see it, and I expected it to be some sort of cheesy action flick with big egos, a hollywood plot, and just alot of cheese. It ended up being a low key atmospheric type of movie. While the events may or may not be realistic, they were portrayed in a realsitic manner. It seemed like the events were 'just filmed' and not fabricated for an audience, like we were just peeking into real things going on in a more dramatic universe.

Ample 08-11-2006 04:34 AM

This last week while on vacation I saw two movies. You Me and Dupree with my mother, and Lady in the Water with my sister.

You Me and Dupree
This defiantly was not my first choice at the theater, but my moms and I needed to find some common ground. Had some good laughs in it, but overwhelmingly funny. Typical Owen Wilson comedy. I was very surprised that the ending was good, and that is why I give it 3/5

Lady in the Water
I'm a Big M. Night Shammy fan, so this was a no brainer. I saw that the critics gave it "C" and "D" grades, but those guys are a bunch of douchebags so I wasn't worried. I really liked it, it dragged slightly, but overall great movie. I would put it in the middle of the pack, when it comes to his films. 4/5

longbough 08-13-2006 06:39 AM

16 Blocks ... fantastic movie! Watch it on DVD with the "alternate ending," not the "theatrical ending." The "alternate" was, of course, the ending they really wanted ... and it's a better one.

Kadath 08-13-2006 10:53 AM

Madagascar 7/10

The main characters were boring and the plot was forgettable, but there were several gags that had me rolling, and both the penguins and Sasha Baron Cohen's Lemur King were incredible and saved the film from being a waste.

noodle 08-13-2006 01:02 PM

Talledaga Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby... 4/10. awful. painful. some good one-liners but it was so overwhelmed with the bad NASCAR and redneck cliches that they become incredibly annoying.
I want someone to excise those two hours from my brain with a very sharp scalpel.

Grasshopper Green 08-22-2006 10:43 AM

We just rented V for Vendetta and 16 Blocks.

V for Vendetta was awesome. I loved it and it captured my attention from the get-go. Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, and the guy who played the detective were all superb. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet. 4.5/5

16 Blocks - lame. Stupid story, terrible acting (Bruce Willis acted like he was bored the entire time), all around lame. In fact, I didn't even finish it...I only watched 2/3 of it, hoping it would get better. It never did. Great movie if you don't have a root canal or something similarly entertaining already planned. 0.5/5, and the only reason for the half star is Mos Def's acting...his voice was so annoying I wanted to slap him, but his acting was half decent.

Kadath 08-23-2006 04:52 AM

Battle Royale - 7/10

Fairly true to the novel, some good violence, and Beat Takeshi was very fun as the teacher (although his humanization was a departure from the novel). I wonder what the US version will be like.

Sage 08-23-2006 05:35 AM

Snakes On A Plane - 7/10

Not quite as Epic as the internet made it out to be, but still wholly entertaining and had some of the best one-liners from a movie I'd seen in a while. Plus it had a happy ending, and the characters were actually dynamic and learned how to be better people after their ordeal, so that made me happy.

Pip 08-23-2006 10:18 AM

Superman Returns 8/10

The Superman/Jesus thingy got boring after a while, but aside from that it was an interesting mixture of romance, morality and good old-fashioned mayhem. Lex Luthor was friggin' awesome! I loved the boat and the henchmen and the silly little things like the piano duet and the cannibal corgy.

And I want that boat. Wantitwantitwantit!

MexicanOnABike 08-23-2006 12:16 PM

Miami Vice
this movie started out just like i thought but after they get into the story, it slows down to a crawl for a bit. i found that there was too much romance in this movie. but the few action scenes that were here were really great and realistic. this wasnt better than collateral but close. i have never seen the 80s show on tv so i cannot compare. what most critic said was false.
8.5/10

Solid movie. The visuals were unsettling, though more in the sense of camera work than gory stuff. Enjoyable. If they bring the other two over to the US I'll definitely watch them.

Episode 1 10/10
Visuals were stunning, costumes and hair were fabulous and the digial/animatronic aliens were superb! The Darth Maul saber scene goes without saying.....

Episode 2 4/10
Zzzzzzzzzzz Lack of substance but the visuals were good

Episode 3 8/10
The fight scenes were darn near without compare. Plot twists out the yin yang and kept me on my toes. Lucas tied up his ends well.

pan6467 08-28-2006 07:04 AM

The Star Wars "preludes" 1-3 (I cannot rank these seperately)=

They weren't bad, I liked JarJar, I could feel comfortable with Yoda and Obi-Wan, but Lucas made it very apparent from the beginning who the Dark Lord of the Sith truly was, so the suspense of finding out or looking for clues throughout the films were very much spoiled. The whole "immaculate conception" of Anakin stunk and had too many religious undertones.

I think a good plot twist would have been to have Anakin the son of Darth Sidious somehow. That would kind of seperate the Luke/Anakin storyline in that you'd see the one kill the father and the one save the father. A nice twist if you think about it. They could have arranged it so that Anakin's mother had never known. Having been a slave girl, she found herself one night with a man that had paid her master... or whatever.....

Overall, predictable, long and somewhat boring..... 5/10

Pirates of the Carribean 2 Dead Man's Chest =

A spectacular movie. Yes, it was long, but I don't see what they could have cut out. There is a sequel and I feel that everything was in there for a purpose, that purpose may not have been immediately seen. As for romance, very high between Depp and Knightly, a great chemistry and I look forward to seeing more of it. The threeway sword fight in the waterwheel...... unbelievably original and hysterical.

I cannot get over Depp's acting, it was like the character was made for him. Depp is a very decent actor but this series is most definately his crowning achievement.

This is not a knock on anyone else's acting, in fact this movie, to me, was the most well acted movie I have watched in years. It seemed like the actors liked their roles, liked the plot and had fun playing it. There didn't seem to be the "I need to have a dramatic scene" or "I demand more airtime, and only profiles from the left" or "I want to bring social-political meaning into the film".

It was just a "Fuckitall, let's have a blast" type movie and it showed.

Is 3 going to be predictable? Probably, I already can imagine what will happen, and even if everything I believe will happen does happen.... it will be exciting to watch.

I rate this movie a 9.9/10 and a definate must see.

It was done well, and was the first movie since "The Good Girl" that I actually enjoyed Jennifer Aniston in. Add to that Catherine Keener (who is lovable in any role) and Joan Cusack and it's very difficult to fail. The last 10 minutes or so, unfortunately, resulted in a major point of cheese and shouldn't be watched. :P I suggest stopping the movie after the benefit dinner.

Derivative and dull, though I didn't expect any different. Some interesting new ideas, but not enough to carry the sequel.

Hoot 6/10: I think the part of the story was inconsistent and not edited very well, but the idea for the movie was pretty good. The teen actors did a pretty good job with the dialog being so weak.

RV-6/10: A fun film made for Robin Williams and the story had a few laughs, but it was kind of dry. All of the main characters were well developed, but it seemed to end quickly. The special features were okay and the director's introduction to the gag reels was rather odd just because of the way he spoke and acted.

The Illusionist 9/10:
Quote:

In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a magician (Norton) uses his abilities to secure the love of a woman far above his social standing.
Down-right entertaining. Norton delivers a stellar performance as Eisenheim, the magician. Paul Giamatti's Chief Inspector Uhl is the perfect character to play both ally and enemy to Norton. I don't believe I'm going to say this, but Jessica Biel of 7th Heaven gives a believable performance, though Elanor Tomlinson, who plays a younger version of Biel's character does a better job. The storyline is riviting and classic in the area of a magician based mystery/thriller. I won't give too much away, but at the end you'll leave happy.

Crank 7/10: This was so much better than what I was expecting. I came to this movie with the understanding that it was intended to be an action flick (i.e. no real story line, character development, etc.). While I was right, the rest of the movie managed to make up for the action movie cliches. The visual effects really enhance the sense of being on cocaine and the mystery drug. Spoiler: Pay careful attention to Frank's pattern shirt. It's a fricking trip. If you like action flicks, you'll probably like this.

The Protector 8/10: At this point, I think I can safely say that Tony Jaa is the most talented martial artist in movie making today, second only to Bruce Le in cinima fighting. I only wish he could have been discovered before the Matrix trilogy. That would have been something. The Protector has an elephant based storyline that is hidden benieth the real reason everyone will see this film: Tony Jaa doing things that superheros would have trouble with. I'm beginning to wonder if Tony was bitten by a radioactive spider. Nedless to say, The Protector is filled with thrilling martial arts battles and stunts that are really entertaining. Don't see it if you like storyline. See it if you like Jet Li, Jackie Chan, etc.

I'm always late with movies I really wanna see, but I fina;;y saw:
-The Island:
7/10...The plot was quite good, and I liked the way the evnets turned out, Ewan McGregor was quite believable as a clone. The woman, however, was weird in her role, and I think she was hired more for her looks than for her skills.

Batman Begins:
10/10... I can't remember the last time when I got the chills from the coolness of a movie.
Christian Bale is very good for Bruce Wayne, I like the new Alfred. Ras al Guhl was played pretty well. I think that overall I liked the feeling of Gotham City and it's streets crawling with criminals and corruption.

fresnelly 09-19-2006 05:09 AM

The Banquet Starring Ziyi Zhang. 9/10

This is an epic Chinese historical similar in style to House of Flying Daggers. The set up is that the Emporer was assassinated by his Brother, who usurps the throne. The new False Emporer takes the Empress as his own, but she still loves the exiled Prince, who is the true heir and also technically, her step-son and step-nephew. Confusing? It's not really, especially if you know Hamlet, upon which this is loosely based. All you need to know is that revenge is the order of the day.

The scenery and cinematography are amazing, and though this isn't strictly an action film, the fight sequences, choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping of Matrix fame, are stunning. Actually they were way more graphic than I was expecting, with plenty of impalings and blood everywhere. Nobody dies cleanly here.

It's a bit melodramatic at times, underscored by welling music but, this is a quibble. If you don't like foreign films or stylized dramas, then this isn't for you, but it definitely has a lot to offer.

Min 09-19-2006 09:40 PM

<u>Night Watch</u> and <u>Day Watch</u> parts one and two of a movie trilogy, there is a possible fourth, from Russia. It pails to say it's the eternal battle of Good and Evil, there's an intriguing twist in that both sides allow a certain amount of leeway, as long as the rules are maintained. I found the first installment slightly confusing but, was sucked in completely. The second was far better in effects and storyline.
This is certainly a case that I'm going to buy the books as soon as they are in paperback.

Running Scared: 9/10
this is weird because i had not seen a single preview or heard about it but i checked it out on RT and in the user comments, i felt like i had to see it so i rented it last week. I must say, it's quite entertaining from start to finish!

story: some guy in the mafia world has to get rid of a gun used to kill a cop but when the gun turns out missing, theres a whole night full of evens to find the gun.

Acting is pretty good, storyline is great!, the way the movie is shot is awesome. the end is a bit predictable but still good.

Fritz the Cat - 0/10

I hate everything I've ever seen by Bakshi. I hate his style, I think he's a lazy hack. And this cartoon was just stupid. It reminded me of a line from the Simpsons. Kent Brockman shows their "standard 60s montage" that consists of footage from Vietnam, Woodstock, etc. At the end he says "What a shrill, pointless decade." That's how this cartoon made me feel about the 60s. Any of you who lived through it, well, I feel sorry for you.

I just saw this classic movie for the first time, and I loved it. Steve McQueen is great as always, and the other actors were good too. If you like old movies, you should definitely enjoy this one

I saw this last night, and it was awesome. They definatly topped number 1 by far. This is the funniest movie ive seen in a while. Ill admit that its not for everyone, but i love this type of humor so it get 10/10 for me.

Clerks 2
9/10

I think it's Kevin Smith's best and funniest movie so far. It's got a good story, the pacing of the movie is good, it has a happy ending, and there's parts of it that were so funny tears were coming out of my eyes from laughing so hard. I thoroughly enjoyed it :D

Daoust 09-23-2006 09:21 AM

The 40 Year Old Virgin
Finally got around to seeing this film, which I rented in part because I love Steve Carell in The Office. Anyway, in the end I didn't like this film. I knew it was going to be crude, and I'm not too often turned off by crudeness, but in this case I was. There was funny parts, but it was lowbrow, lowball humour. Just above pee and poop jokes. Carell is funny, but not as funny as in the Office, and the other characters are really not funny. Except the Indian guy who says something like "Love is about family and passion, not about giving the rusty trumpet or the dirty sanchez." Now that I laughed at. But only for a short time.

I'd have to give this movie a 4/10.

MexicanOnABike 09-23-2006 09:51 AM

United 93

little spoilers but you probably allready know the story.
this is a weird movie for me to watch since i sorta believe the conspiracies around the 9/11 day. I'm glad they didnt use a single known actor and they didnt focus on any characters which made it feel much more like everyone was involved.
The movie starts with the highjackers in their hotel room getting ready for the day and keeps following them through out the film. i think this killed the feeling for the ppl in the planes since i had no idea who they were and they were less shown than the highjackers.
Overall, i think the movie should of focused on the ATC instead of the planes. i thought the ATC was so much more interesting to see and the characters had emotions. in the end, theres more action on the ground than in the plane.

Fearless - 27/10

This is one of the single best movies I've ever seen. Captivating, well thought out, consistent, engaging, amazing.

The fight coriography is some of the best I've seen, and though the movie is based on fighting, they don't overdue it. This movie has an underlying emotional content that hooks you, and really brings out the story.

Go see it

I'm watching Hero again on Spike TV right now, and I definitely want to see Fearless.

I also want to see that new Tony Jaa movie, even though Jaa's movies aren't as beautiful and epic, his skill is amazing.

The Last Kiss

Loved it. One of the three best movies I've seen all year. The acting was fantastic. The story was realistic. The movie was spot on about human weakness, fears, and relationships...both the good and the bad. This is an absolute gem in the beginning of the "big" movie season, and I'm glad I didn't miss it. 4.5/5

!!!! funny you should post that. I just watched it yesterday. Plus the extras which explained how it was based on reality.

I found the cinematography to be pleasant to experience compared to more current movies. Apparantly they moved the production of this movie to Germany, because the site that they chose near Los Angelas was going to prove to be too expensive to transport 200 extras to on a daily basis. The union representing the extras forced the issue, and the movie had to move to Germany.

edit:
Oh, yes, 8.5/10 as well. some cheese factor, but excellent entertainment. also, consider that there were no female actors in this production. It starred:

Steve McQueen
James Garner
Richard Attenborough
Charles Bronson
Donald Pleasance
James Coburn

amongst others

shesus 10-14-2006 07:17 PM

I haven't rated a movie in awhile. But we watched 2 tonight that were very hyped up and I wasn't as impressed as all the reviews.

FINDING NEVERLAND 8/10
I did like this movie. It was fun and had good looking actors (Depp and Winslet). However, I didn't think it was *as* good as the media portrayed it. The special effects were great and I love that era. The kid actors were amazing. Overall, it was an entertaining film. I wouldn't buy it, but I'm glad I watched it. I cried at the end...a lot So I hated it in that respect because crying is horrible.

MONSTER 3/10
This movie was painful. I wanted to end it after the first 10 minutes. I couldn't stand looking at either actress (Theron or Ricci). It took a lot to make them look that hideous I think. Even the lesbian and topless scenes were lost and made me a bit sick to my stomach. The story was interesting and based on truth, but I wouldn't watch it again or recommend it to anyone. I was sick of the 'woe is me' 'men are pigs' rationale through the whole movie. Also, the characters lacked any strength and were awkward. Maybe it's the frame of mind I have right now, but it is a movie I just didn't care for.

I finally got around to watching Confessions of a Dangerous Mind this weekend. I loved it! Sam Rockwell was brilliant and George Clooney looked charmingly stodgy. Excellent balance of flashy auteurism and plainspoken narrative on the part of Clooney's direction. I give it a 9/10.

I also watched the bonus footage for the Concert for Bangladesh this weekend (somehow it ended up in my queue before the actual concert??). I loved what I saw and can't wait to see the concert film sometime this week.

Also, I recently watched Grizzly Man. I highly recommend this documentary. It seems a little canned and sentimental at first, but it grows on you. This film haunted me for days after watching it. I give it an 8/10.

I recently saw Hard Candy.
Pretty good movie overall, but extremely creepy. Acting is very good, from both main actors.

The Sentinel, starring Micheal Douglas, was an average flick. The plot had nothing too original, but the movie kept me entertained. I guess it's pretty much a guy flick.

happiness of the katakuris.

hilarious. so so strange...it is a different film every few minutes, but mostly it is a warped musical, kinda like you'd imagine the sound of music to end up if you left it out in the sun to curdle and that was then turned into a film by takashi mi'ike. were you to imagine the sound of music left out in the sun to curdle that is. a couple of the musical numbers--like the one that breaks out while the katakuris are burying the body of their first hotel guest, the one who may or may not have committed suicide--are supremely warped and are therefore quite lovely and really should be seen by everyone.

almost in the same league as wild zero, the strange zombie film featuring that immortal band guitar wolf, which was perhaps best undestood as the ramones of japan. i say almost because (a) happiness of the katakuris is less stupid BUT (b) it doesnt have guitar wolf.

grizzly man: an interesting film.
i was a bit irritated about the extent to which werner herzog makes it into a film about himself--by likening timothy treadwell to klaus kinski for example---but the footage is extraordinary and the film's subject deeply problematic in a complex kinda way. the residual deleuze i have clanging about in my skull made me wish that something more had been done with the "becoming bear" aspect of the film, but it nonetheless provided ample material for this riff to unspool in my head, which is perhaps enough.

spirit of the beehive: a beautiful claustrophobic spanish film from the early 1970s about--well lots of things, really---the franco regime is obvious the subtext--but the story involves two little girls--sisters--in a tiny rural town in spain who see the film frankenstein and then have an adventure that doubles frankenstein in interesting ways. there are some truly beautiful sequences--all of the interiors shot in the main house are amazing to look at,, particularly the honeycomb windows and the yellowish light they generate that permeates all the shots---the sequences involving the girls walking across a huge field to the site of the principle adventures....just a beautiful visual experience....

I agree with you about Herzog's insertion of himself so much into this film. Overall, the film had the feeling that it turned into something, perhaps, inappropriately personal and almost cultish - considering his interaction with and (to me) over-the-top "performances" of the people who knew Treadwell. It is an odd film. But I see you found it strangely affecting, too.

I've always heard about Spirit of the Beehive but have not seen it. I'm going to put in on my queue - sounds good.

lindalove 10-23-2006 08:27 AM

The Departed had really good performances all round, I feel. Even from Alec Baldwin, whose character had some really funny lines ("I LOVE THE PATRIOT ACT!"). The ending was brilliant, really unforgiving and shocking - that is, what happened wasn't exactly shocking, but the way it happened was.

There was one standout scene for me. It's kind of a tiny spoiler, so I'll put it under a cut:

Spoiler: At one point, Leonardo DiCaprio is with Martin Sheen and Mark Wahlberg, and his life is basically being ripped apart. The music comes together, the acting is incredible, it's simply amazing, and stayed with me for long after the film ended.

Mark Wahlberg and Leonardo DiCaprio played excellently off one another. DiCaprio's character is basically a LOT better than Matt Damon's - it's far deeper and more involving.

The script is a bit poor though. The dialogue is fine; the problem is that the writers never make anything TOO explicit, meaning that if you're not really concentrating and thinking then you'll likely be confused in parts. I kept having to think back to who was chasing who, who was doing what, why people were doing certain things, what this meant for other characters... it didn't make it too easy to watch. There are several turns that the plot goes down, and while the basic storyline is good, it needed to be better written, I feel.

Overall, though, a very good film, and well worth watching. 8/10

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Don't know where to begin...let's just suffice it to say that I was disappointed by this movie. 5/10. And the only reason it's not a 3 is because of Johnny Depp's sometimes charming impressions of William H. Macy & Francis McDormand in Fargo. Not that they were particularly fitting for the role, but it was somewhat accomplished mimicry regardless. And the little dude stole the show.

Also, I just realized something about this movie, I never thought I'd see a version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where the build-up to the chocolate factory tour would be more entertaining than the spectacle of entering Willie Wonka's world. But I saw it.

parker posey in fabulous outfits wandering through a film that is pretty funny in a geeky way until they decided that it had to end, but hey, who cares, it's 3/4 of a fine movie for watching on one of those night where the remote for the dvd player is the outer limit of the complexity you want to deal with.

The Bridge ***

A documentary that captures on film 24 suicides committed by people jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004, along with one survivor. It's interspersed with talking heads discussing suicide. I'm not sure at this point how good it actually is. It's compelling because it deals with such a profound subject, and moving because you're literally watching the last seconds of someone's life. Those two elements ramp up the emotions so much that it becomes difficult to really evaluate things. Still, for emotional power alone, it's quite effective.

MexicanOnABike 10-29-2006 05:47 PM

wow was this movie not like the other ones. i'll admit right now that the story was good and FUCKing twisted BUT the movie was horrible. i had to close my eyes because there was too much FLASHES. every scene was a flash. not flashback. but a flash. kinda like watching a preview.

I realize I am pitifully behind on my movie watching and reviewing films that most of ya'll saw long ago, but I don't get out much (single mom) and I just recently re-joined Netflix so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Downfall 9/10 - My 17 y.o. daughter insisted I watch this film with her. She is fascinated with all things German and particularly with Nazi Germany. Not in a positive way, of course. It is more of the fascination of disbelief, I think. She is horrified by the Holocaust...but I am digressing. I loved the film. I found it very enlightening as to the "inner sanctum" figures of the Third Reich. A subject I've not been well-educated on. But I found the performances to be both chilling and unexpectedly sympathetic. Not that I sympathize with their cause, just that they were shown to be just what they were, humans with frailties and flaws and a quite remarkably ignoble gullibility. I have not witnessed on film a more chilling and pathetic example of this than Frau Goebbles in a very long time. All in all I found the film to be very engaging, exceptionally performed, and photographed with a skillful modesty considering the bunker set most of the film takes place on - in fact, I was impressed with the unassuming tone of the film overall. I could go on and on about the thoughts and feelings this film left me with, but primarily I came away with this impression: In the end, how feebly and pathetically fall even the most breathtakingly ignominious of humankind's follies. I highly recommend this film to anyone and everyone except, of course, the very young - there are a few gruesome scenes.

Much to my dismay, my daughters love this video game and LOVED this movie. I finally sat down and watched it with them the other night. It sucked. It sucked so bad that my ears are still popping. This ambitious piece of shit proves once and for all that films based on the plots of video games, much like the saga of Britney Spears and K-Fed, are crushing the soul of America. Good night and good luck.
