Rush Hour 3 - 5/10
I really enjoyed the first two Rush Hours, but this one just felt so forced. I might feel that way if I watch the old ones again but I remember them as being good (maybe I should leave it that way). The jokes were mildly funny at best, action scenes were too cheesy (in a bad way). |
The Heartbreak Kid - 8/10
Ben Stiller + Farrelly Brothers! I was pleasantly surprised at this movie. Much better than Stiller's last few movies. |
The Bourne Ultimatum -- 10/10
I loved the first two Bourne movies, but I think this one is the best of the series. Plenty of ass kicking and intense chase scenes with a good mixture of clever strategizing and improvisation. In short, just total pwnage of the NSA and CIA. |
Marie and Bruce -15/10
I'm all for artsy type movies, and even interested in something that is just off the beaten path, but darling, this piece of shit movie is the worst thing I have even seen. Even getting to stare at Julianne Moore doesn't salvage enough to give it a 1/10 23 6/10 interesting, but not all that. I found the back story to be compelling and there's lots of things that you want to try to figure out to catch the writers, but eh. it was somewhat entertaining. |

Sweeney Todd - 8/10
Not perfect, but very fun. Also, I like to consider myself loose, morally speaking, but the gore in this got to me. I wasn't offended, it just hit me weird. |
Hawk the Slayer - 8/10
B movie good. Cheesiest sword and sorcery flick ever made. See No Evil - 4/10 Had a good laugh watching this one. If you want to see something serious don't watch this one. Your typical WWE sponsored slasher film. Planet Terror - 9/10 Loved this one, modern B movie goodness!! I was not sure what to expect from this one but I absolutely loved it! AVP R - 8/10 Not a shred of plot or character development. Just total Alien and Predator goodness! My brother describes this one as: "its like they took some aliens, predators and humans, stuck them in a jar and shook it up to see what would happen" |
how to succeed in business without really trying
a musical about early 60s corporate ideology. bad beyond your wildest imaginings. but if you've been hanging about with comrades and find yourself very late at night having had a few beverages, it's fascinating in a kinda watch the train wreck way. mostly, though, it's "the umbrellas of cherbourg" dropped into a fantasy about ibm circa 1964. i dont know if i'd recommend this--it is truly wretched---but on the other hand, having something for that "i'm kinda stupid and want to watch a colorful disaster during which everyone seems to be having a great time" period in your life isn't so bad. i guess. |
Die Hard 2: Die Harder 8/10
cheesy acting ridiculous plot bad special effects explosions/gunfire galore whats not to love about it? |
Juno.
Even though it seemed at times to be trying too hard to be intellectual for the teenager's ages, I really liked this movie. My SO is wondering if it was funded by some pro-lifer agency, but I liked that it was different and the ending wasn't frou-frou Hollywood sappiness. Plus, Rainn Wilson made me giggle... Quote:
I'll give it a 8.9/10 for freshness and entertainment without being too freaking annoying. |
i watched a collection of suzan pitt animations last night:
asparagus joy street el doctor unbelievable---i was floored by asparagus and el doctor in particular. these are hard to describe...quite complex very surreal animations that use combinations of techniques/styles to a very effective end, particularly is leaving you sitting on your couch repeating the phrase "what the fuck was that?" over and over can be understood as a goal. i think of the 3 shorts, asparagus was my favorite not only because it went very far into dreamtime, but also because the richard teitelbaum/george lewis/steve lacy/steve potts et al. music track is spectacular----but it's hard to say which film is better as each is lovely, strange, beautiful. brilliant stuff. |
No Country for Old Men 5/10
I usually love Tommy Lee Jones movies. This one was overly violent for me, even though it had great suspense. But I was enjoying it until the last 5-20 minutes. Then it dropped from a 8/10 to a 5/10. |
Couple I've seen over the past week...
Rush Hour 3 - 6/10 I haven't read a lot of good reviews myself, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I (and probably at most two other people on this planet) enjoy Chris Tucker, so I didn't mind him at all, which most seem to. Gotta take it for what it is and ignore the plot holes (I guarantee you they exist more than usual). Plot isn't that strong, though I didn't expect it to be that interesting. Watched it mostly because I enjoyed the first two films. I Am Legend - 8/10 Very good movie in my opinion. I am a fan of Will Smith and I think his acting definitely delivers in this movie. The overall plot of it is something that I thought was very cool too, the CG was pretty good, and I thought it flowed pretty nicely - though a little slow in the beginning I thought. I'd highly recommend this movie to about anyone. National Treasure 2 - 4/10 I think my biggest problem with this is I sat down to watch it expecting too much. I was extremely disappointed in this movie. It didn't seem really original to me, way too much like the first and a lot of the stuff in the movie seemed pretty corny to me, along with plot holes in the movie that were just too big to ignore. Even trying to take this movie for what it was and not think too much about it, I couldn't enjoy it. |
Superbad - 3/10
What a stupid movie. It was just a bunch of scenes with awkward 13 year olds in it. There was no way these people were moving on to university, they were probably just going into high school. I was pretty bored for most of it, and the parts where I wasn't bored I felt like a pervert for the tit shots on the 13 year old girls. The movie had me laughing for about 5 scenes and bored off my ass for the rest. I do not recommend this to anyone at all. In fact, every movie I have seen by the same director or writer (knocked up...) was total shit. I plan on never seeing another one like this again. |
Lord of War - 7/10
Nicolas Cage is the ugliest man in Hollywood. Watching his face for 2 long hours is hard. This movie is a lot longer than it needed to be, but it was filled with interesting scenes and narrative. I guess every movie thats based on real events needs to be 2+ hours. Juno - 8/10 Filled with snarkiness. It was funny if you can get past the fact that the writer is basically a 28/29 year old who loves that she loves things nobody else loves channeling herself through every single character. The attitude was like Thora Birch in Ghost World, but trying too hard. I enjoyed it and Z LOVED it. |
National Treasure 2 - 5/10
I really didn't like this movie much. It was so similar to the first movie that it just really bugged me... I am legend - 6/10 I would have probably liked this much more had I not read the book. They butchered the story. The name of the movie doesn't even make sense as it did in the book. Oh well... we all knew that would happen... Alien vs. Predator Requiem - 7/10 Good action from start to end of this movie. The acting was crap, but who cares for a movie like this...This is what the first AVP should have been. Lots of fighting, no predator / human alliance, lots of subtle things that were brought back from the originals like "Get to the choppahhhhh" :) Gone Baby Gone - 8/10 I only pulled this movie down because I think I've seen every other movie that has come out in the last 2 years and had nothing else to watch. I was pleasantly surprised, and I completely enjoyed this flick. I was a bit leary of seeing it since it was directed by Ben Affleck, starring Casey Affleck, but I guess Ben is more talented on the directing end. |
Angel-a
8.5/10 This movie was visually well done. I always enjoy black and white films and this one did not disappoint. It was set in Paris and had many interesting locations. The grocer assistant in Amelie was the main actor and the bomb-shell, leggy blonde actress was a good match. I was expecting something more sci-fi, but it was just a good mix of comedy, love story, sci-fi, drama fun. |
Juno
Good, not great. The first 15 minutes seem like they are trying REALLY hard to be quirky, but then it settled down and improved greatly. I love the actors more than anything - I'm a fan of Jason Bateman, Allison Janney, J.K. Simmons, Ellen Page, Olivia Thirlby, Michael Cera, and Jennifer Garner is OK. Also, I think my sweet-little-quirky-indie-film quota may have been filled at this point. I love indie rock as much as the next guy, but damn, the Moldy Peaches aren't the only band in the world. Ratatoullie Also good not great. I think its overrated, but thats just because people rank it as a best-of-year type movie. It's not, its just really solid entertainment. But Brad Bird is an amazing man, and the animation of this movie is pretty mindblowingly awesome. Most other animators should just go home and let him do his thing from now on. |
War -- 5/10
Explosions, killing, revenge, backstabbing... blah, blah, blah... just another uninspired action movie. Decent fight scenes and chases, but as soon as I sat down to watch it I was waiting for it to end... maybe I just wasn't in the mood. |
Quote:
Shoot 'em up 7.999/10:thumbsup:  I loved this movie. The action scenes were over the top and so unrealistic. It's hilariously ridiculous. To quote Blazing Saddles, "He must have killed more people than Cecil B. DeMille." |
mike, what were the other Luc Besson movies. I'm assuming one is Fifth Element.
Antikörper (Antibodies in US) 7/10 This movie was a good crime/thriller movie. You think you have it figured out, in fact I was thinking from the beginning that I hope it's at least entertaining because I had an idea of how it was going to end. I need to brush up on my prediction skills I suppose. The acting was decent. The story wasn't as complete as I would have liked it even though the movie was over 2 hours. I wouldn't have wanted it to be any longer though. I think that they tried to make it an astounding movie to compete with Silence of the Lambs and Seven, but they didn't quite hit the mark. Not great, not horrible, just a decent film. |

Superbad
I thought i would love this movie but i was actually really disappointed! most of the jokes came from the fat kid who was just screaming "fuck" the entire time so he wasn't really funny. the parts that I liked was everything surrounding Mclovin. overall, it's a shitty story with not much keeping it together. I rate this movie: 6/10 |
shesus: check out the fifth element.
it's another quite cool besson film, which i liked quite alot (despite the fact that bruce willis is in it.) grin without a cat chris marker's amazing film about the rise of the new left/the history of the period from 1967-1974. a fascinating, complex film. i watched a dub and am not sure that there has been an official dvd release. i mention the dub because the imagery had a strange quality to it--kinda washed out--but the decision to use morton subotnik-style synthesizer sounds as the primary music/sound for the more iconic sequences seemed to merge with the quality of the imagery, so that the past you are watching--which is not that distant, really--seems strangely closed off, like you are watching a boat sink. it's a brilliant film. you have to know quite a bit about the history to see it as a film and not as an information source, but this is nonetheless a no-loose situation. see it if you can find it. |
Lethal Weapon Series 1-4
Wife got tired of me talking about the movies so got them for me for Christmas. Everything I remembered, mind numbing action and comedy.... What else can one say other than Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, a very hot Rene Russo...... Just a great movie series maybe one of the greatest because they knew when to end it and kept it fresh to the end. |
Roach, I watched The Fifth Element a few years ago. I liked it, but I hate Bruce Willis. He almost ruined Pulp Fiction for me too. I just can't get past him. Except in The Sixth Sense because he wasn't trying to be a tough ass. I just hate that character role he usually gets.
Ok, so I rented 3 movies earlier this week. And all three were good. Such a rarity, I've been called the Queen of Bad Movie Picks in my past. Somehow, I outdid myself. I enjoyed every movie. The first 2 I've already reviewed. Dead and Breakfast 2 eyes open and a purchase... That's 10/10 I loved this movie. It is great! A wonderful campy horror flick, that makes fun of itself. The case said America's answer to Shaun of the Dead. I wouldn't go that far because that movie is a classic in the genre. This one was good in a different way though. They had the scenes separated by cheesy songs like in There's Something About Mary. And there's a head hand puppet. The script is brilliantly written for this genre. There are many jokes that are more innuendos and passed over by the characters. It was nice to laugh watching a horror flick because it was funny, usually it's because it's ridiculous. This is just a bad movie that turned out to be hilarious and awesome. |

Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and a young Natalie Portman in The Professional. Awesome movie. It's one of those movies that I have to watch every time I see it on TV. I don't think Portman has done anything as good since, Although V was close.. :) I Am Legend 8/10 Yeah, It deviated from the book but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Spoiler: I would've liked to see it get a little deeper into the "still living" side of things with Anna being a spy for them but I really didn't expect it from the movie. |
Final Destination - 3/10
Really bad movie. It had spirit.. it tried.. but it was written so badly. And acted so badly. |
blade runner
it was a little boring to watch, but it's fun to think about afterwards. was he a replicant or a human? i give it an 8 |
10/10 The Godfather
It is has to watch some of the old classics today because other movies and shows have built onto the foundations. Trying to think of the fact it was released in 1972 was 3 hours long gives it lots to consider. As stories go watching Michael (Al Pacino) eating from the table away from everyone else in the Wedding to head of the family by the end is an incredible story arc. |

Joshua.
That kid is freaky. I had nightmares. And the camera angles were done in a way that kept me paying attention. I was expecting really campy horror-crap, but it so very much was NOT campy. And the last four minutes brought everything together. It was really well done and to say much more would give away too much. 9/10 |
Quote:
For a minute I thought you were talking about this one, which reminds me of The Good Son. I refuse to watch that movie to this day. I'll try to look for it, since you say it isn't as hooky as it seems. |
The second, Augi. I usually link it, but I forgot this time. I also expected hokey, but was pleasantly surprised.
|
Shit... can't watch that one then...
|
The Watcher 6/10
Thriller with James Spader, Keanu Reeves and Marisa Tomei. Too predictable and just too simple. Was nice to revisit Chicago since it played a role as part of the location. |
Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows) 8/10
Directed by Louis Malle, from IMDB "A self-assured business man murders his employer, the husband of his adulterer, which unintentionally provokes an ill-fated chain of events." It was beautifully shot. The soundtrack was composed by Miles Davis. I enjoyed it. Zazie dans le métro (7/10) Another Louis Malle movie. Zazie stays with her uncle in Paris while her mom spends time with her lover. Zazie runs off and has fun in Paris on her own. It's a comedy. It was interesting, but not much of a plot to speak of. |
National Treasure 9/10
Very much like the original, and really deserves maybe 7. But it had Nicholas Cage in it, so it bumped up the rating, for me anyway. I'll watch Nicholas Cage do just about a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g. Charlie Wilson's War 8/10 Congressman helped form alliances of three countries to rid Afghanistan from the Red Army in the 1980's. Heavy on social message, for good or bad. Boy, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are looking old. |
<B><I>No Country For Old Men</I></B> <B>10/10</B>
The best movie of 2007 without a doubt. This movie is about as close to a masterpiece as you can get. The Coen Brothers' directing, cinematography and script are perfect. The big trio really set this movie apart from anything else...Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), and Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) all deliver performances that don't even seem like performances. You consider for a moment that maybe they're not acting, maybe this is a documentary. Absolute raw suspense is governed by the Anton Chigurh character who will be known through the history of cinema as one of the most disturbing and frightening killers. Two characters having a seemingly innocent conversation that is actually laden with whether or not death is about to occur. A sense of dread that I haven't felt since Children of Men. This movie will leave you thinking about it for weeks after you see it. I wouldn't change one single thing about this movie if given the chance. Perfection. <B><I>Juno</I></B> <B>9/10</B> A very, very good movie. Hell, I would even say it's a great movie simply because the directors and Juno (Ellen Page) perfectly executed how to make a comedy with well-scripted drama. Who knew that Jennifer Garner could act? The parents have realistic questions, comments, and sympathies instead of being Generic Teenager Parents That Get Real Mad®. The adopting couple are freaking weird in a good way...a realistic way. Then you realize that Jennifer Garner's character is possibly the most pure character in the entire movie after the movie's best scene (when Juno lets Garner's character feel the baby kick). What's keeping it from a 10/10? Well, I personally hated the Rainn Wilson scene. It didn't flow with the movie and I was very glad that he didn't appear anywhere else. Also, a VERY small amount of the dialogue was trying too hard to capture how teenagers talk. I realize that teenagers really do talk that (excuse my politically incorrectness) retarded, but a few small phrases were too over the top. Great movie for any mature audience. It accomplishes what Superbad and Knocked Up tried (and almost succeeded) to do: mix the best of comedy and the best of drama together seamlessly. |
The Last King of Scotland
Premiered tonight on HBO and it is easy to see why Forest Whitaker took the Oscar, among other awards, for this. The movie starts out a bit slow. Gillian Anderson, almost unrecognizable in long blonde hair and a half-hearted English accent and James McAvoy play missionaries in Uganda, when a chance meeting with Idi Amin offers the McAvoy character, Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, the chance to be Amin's personal physician. It is when he takes the job that things start to pick up-the last 30-40 minutes are stunning, gory, disturbing and I couldn't walk away. Best movie I've seen in a very long time. |
The Green Mile 9/10
Long movie, wasn't expecting it to be so long, but the characters were genuinely so interesting I wanted to see more of them. Very touching movie, great follow up for Frank Darabont who also did the screenplay for The Shawshank Redemption. |

Juno 9/10
we really enjoyed this movie. it was funnier than i thought it was going to be. the story was good and the characters were mostly believable. Juno seemed a bit too wise for her age and came across as older than some of the adults. this morning we happened to watch the Letterman show when Ellen Page was a guest. (love my DVR) she was basically being herself in that movie. either that or she was still in character... |
The Heartbreak Kid - 9/10
Ben Stiller was absolutely hilarious, one of his better performances imo. Superbad - 8/10 Definitely reminded me a bit about high school and the difficulty of trying to get booze for a party. McLovin ftw. |
Big Daddy - 5/10
an exceptionally high score from me for an Adam Sandler comedy. his "comedic" skills play well with a 5 year old. plus i gave it a couple extra points because it had Joey Lauren Adams in it. |
Eastern Promises 7/10
Well acted and didn't overstay its welcome like History of Violence. |
The Shawshank Redemption. 9.5/10
|
30 Days Of Night 6,5 - 10
I Am Legend 6 - 10 |
1408 6/10
Started out really good and then seemed to get to a point where the writers didn't know how to come up with an ending and they just made some shit up. |
The Hitcher (remake) 5/10
The original with Rutger Hauer is a classic. The remake has less substance, more gore, and a hotter leading lady. Not a bad watch if all you want to do is kill 90 minutes. |
Persepolis -- 8/10, outstanding animated (French) film about an Iranian girl growing up before/after 1979 in Iran, and her experience living abroad in Europe. It's really not a kids' movie, but translates well if you want to bring kids along.
|
7/10 Cloverfield
it was a bit short, but if you like Japanese suitmation monster movies (Kaiju: Godzilla, Ultraman, Gamera) it is entertaining. The handheld camera is a bit disorienting at times, and reminded me of Blair Witch more than anything. Cloverfield (I'm assuming that's the name of the monster) is rather cool looking. Of course for some it's about the disaster of seeing NYC in total shambles, that was worth it for some. It was a good time. Oddly enough the screening I went to the theater held like 400+ and there was only about 30 people. It was raining and cold, but still, not many people at all. |
7/10 The Invisible
Interesting premise, kinda fun. |
3:10 to Yuma--7/10
I thought the performances in the movie were fab, but the ending threw me and I thought it was pretty lame. I found it hard to believe that a hardened killer could suddenly feel empathy for anyone. Still worth seeing just for the action and acting. Zodiac--7/10 I rented it because the critics have just gone on and on about this one. It was good as far as murder mysteries go. I've been seeing this trend though, where Hollywood seems to deem a movie important if it goes on for more than 90 minutes. You know people, there's something to be said for good editing. I would've liked it better if it was tighter. Worth renting. |
Sunshine 7/10
I like Danny Boyle's films. Trainspotting and 28 Days Later are both excellent movies. Sunshine doesn't spend an hour of the movie introducing the characters and trying to explain the whys and hows of the crisis and it's not needed. The characters are easy enough to understand and don't need a hit Aerosmith song to help you connect with them. I felt there was a real sense of peril and urgency in the film. The characters know how important their mission is and they show it. The last bit took a small turn which wasn't horrible but felt like it lost a bit of the first half's build up. I really wish it had went more toward a psychological thriller ending but instead went with more of an action film kind of ending. |
Hitman 9/10
Based upon the game series, it is nine out of ten different kinds of awesome. Kick ass action scenes, a girl with a nice ass, and cool cars (though obviously product placement). Only let down by the fact i didn't think the main character looked old enough (although the actor that plays him is about the right age) and the afore mentioned product placement. A very refreshing movie, just enough blood to make things real, but doesn't go over the top with special effects. Must see! |
The Core 6/10
Good actors, parts were exciting despite poor special effects, gaping holes in story. Could have been great. Juno 9/10 Wonderful, quirky characters and a great script make this teen pregnancy into a film worth watching. |
"Eastern Promises" - a smart thriller punctuated by outstanding little acts of violence.
8.5/10 |
25th Hour 8/10
story of a convicted drug dealers last 25 hours before going to jail. Ed Norton plays it slightly softer than his "American History X" role. |
Awake 8-10
No country for old men 9-10 Hitman 7-10 Hoodwinked 8-10 |
No Country for Old Men 7/10
I have read posts that called this "the perfect film". I do not agree, I thought Fargo was a far better Cohen brothers pic, if I had to choose. Its definitely not a film I want to see again. |
I Am Legend 7/10. Great action but not enough story line. Basically 2 hours of watching a guy try and save a city not really worth saving. No offense to NY'ers but, honestly, if the city became diseased, I'm out of there, I am not gonna stick around to find out what's going to happen next. Especially when I'm all alone. Screw that, I'd go crazy.
Spiderman 3 9/10. Excellent story line, loved the action and the camera movements. It's a great movie. Evan Almighty 7/10. Its a very funny movie. I'm not really into the whole "let's let God come to Earth in human form and screw a guys successful life completely up" but when taken with a grain of salt, I laughed my ass off. |
Ronin 8/10. Entertaining enough, slick chase sequences. Good as far as thrillers go.
|
Bubble 5/10 or 8/10 meh...
I rented this movie because it was filmed in the area I grew up and used local people. It was directed by Steven Soderbergh (Oceans trilogy). It was not a great movie, but I enjoyed it in a strange way. Since I grew up in this 'bubble' town, I felt he captured it perfectly. He didn't have to try too hard since the people were being themselves. It was interesting to see what type of life I escaped. The Lady in the Window 9/10 I love old black and white movies. This one didn't disappoint. An intriguing story of murder, secret affairs, and blackmail. Definitely Fritz Lang at his best. A good movie for a lazy afternoon. |
Gone baby gone 9-10, not what I expected ,awesome movie.
|
Trainspotting. 8.5/10
sadly, i just seen this movie for the first time last night. i should have rented this flick long ago. |
Bully
RIP Brad Renfro. You were a great actor dude. Only 6 days older me... This movie is fucked up even for my standards. Nick Stahl plays a great bully and Renfro being the whipped friend of the bully - he's the only one you can really like and/or feel sorry for out of the bunch. There's some very interesting characters. Michael Pitt as Donny is on an acid trip 24/7 and reminded me of a role a younger Leonardo DiCaprio would play. The movie kinda makes me mad and sad and that makes it hard for me to give it a rating. |
High Tension - 3/10
A big meh. |
Rambo - as a story 1/10 but entertainment value 9/10
|
Casshern - 3/10
Couldn't watch it to the end because it was too boring. You wait for about 55 minutes for it to get cool. When it gets cool, it's FUCKING RAD. Then it sorta drifts for another 30 min and by that time you've had enough and you don't wanna last the last half hour. From this movie, it is clear that the Japanese are in bed with the Deus Ex Machina. Amazing graphics and "live action anime" feel, but it was wasted on a story board that would make David Lynch scratch his head. With that said, Sada Mayumi is HOT and needed to stay alive longer. |
Rambo. Story line was okay but very basic. But then, Rambo movies usually are. The violence was more graphic than his earlier movies. I did like Rambo's personal growth. 7/10 entertainment, but you might have to close your eyes and ears often.
|
Rise of a foot soldier 6.5-10
|
Cloverfield
I really enjoyed this movie! It's refreshing to see something different than always the hero and the army in these kind of movies. Plus the feel of 1 camera and 1 point of view for the whole movie was awesome!! Some parts were left unanswered and that was a bit dissapointing. But for the most part, it worked. Acting was OK and in some parts, good enough. But I would have liked a bit better actors like the dude holding the camera? he's a complete idiot and then he's doing cinematographic shots with a camera he's never held before. If you're gonna see it, i highly recommend catching it while it's still in the cinemas. you'll get the real feel that way. My official rating: 7.5/10 |
There Will Be Blood
A perfect film This ties at #3 in the movies I've seen in the past year. I knew nothing about it when I went in, and I was not dissappointed. It's been a long time since I've seen such a strong film about family. Daniel Day-Lewis was absolutely brilliant. |
The Game Plan - Meh, 6/10. Only rented it because the GF wanted to see it, I admit there were some funny parts and I think The Rock is a pretty good actor.
The Simpsons Movie - 9/10. Laughed my ass off throughout most of the movie, never really watched the series on TV though. |
There Will Be Blood 8/10
I liked the movie, but it moved at a glacial pace. I'll probably like it better the 2nd or 3rd viewing. |
Gone Baby Gone - 8.5/10
Kinda went into this one with blinders on, Didn't have an idea what it was about and only knowing it was nominated for an Oscar or two.. Casey is a better actor than Ben imo :) |
The Last King of Scotland
8/10 amazing portrayal by Forest Whitaker... |
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Well done, but somewhat predictable, and I wasn't particularly frightened by it. 6/10
|
Hard Candy
http://www.hardcandymovie.com/ This movie has a small cast of actors and doesn’t offer a whole lot of change in scenery. However, this is probably one of the most intense psycho thriller movies that I’ve seen in a really long time. I found myself completely engrossed in the film and watched it several times finding little things I'd missed the first few times. It's “about a girl of 14 years old (more than excellent Ellen Page) and a 32 years old guy about pedophilia and about how a pedophile must feel. Or maybe it is only a history of vengeance. You won't know until the end of the film. It sure is a difficult subject for a movie, but the script is excellently profiled in the psychological horror and does not turn to be obscene or anything than can visually or verbally hurt the sensibility of anyone. It is more like disturbing to hear a teenage girl speak how she does, and it is fascinating how your feelings will go from one character to the other during the movie until you realize that no matter what the end is, everyone is guilty of something and it is not to us, humans, to decide what bad actions can be justified by other bad actions.” (www.indb.com) This is a GREAT movie. I highly recommend it! |
Death at a Funeral - 8/10
Maybe not as polished as some british comedies but very good, considering there's no big name stars. Special mention though for "The Toilet Scene" that had me physically hurting from laughter. It gets a 10/10 just for that 60 secs or so. |
Nightwatch - 5/10
This had a lot of promise, but was ultimately too confusing and unsatisfying. They show you glimpses of cool shit in the beginning that you look forward to seeing more of, but as if they ran out of CG budget, they never show any of it again. I mean, one of the recurring characters is a guy named Bear, who is supposed to be able to change into a BEAR. But that's all talk. He never does. WTF. And they show the girl Tiger Cub turn into a tiger once, for like half a second. It's real cool. Then she never does it again. Sigh. |
I am Lengend - 8/10
2012 Doomsday - -1/10 (dont make the mistake) |

"Tasty Teen Sluts in Heat"-
8/10 but a very well done film nonetheless |
Raumpatrouille Orion - 10/10 - classic German scifi which honestly is more respectable than classic Star Trek.
Death Proof - 8/10 - Still shocked at this one. I would give it a 10/10 but I don't know how well the film actually is. It is just another QT flick that blew my mind. Shoot'em Up - 5/10 - Good for action and that is it. I love the forced scenes where they tried to give the characters personality and depth and history. They should have just kept it to a mind numbing action flick. |

Meet the Spartans - 1/10 I'm glad I didn't pay to see that one... What a pile of garbage. It was like a 90 minute long commercial. At one point, they went into a 5 minute budweiser ad... Charlie Bartlett - 8/10 I highly recommend watching this movie. I didn't think I would enjoy it anywhere near as much as I did. The Bucket List - 7/10 Good actors, good story. It was a bit slow at times, but I'm glad I saw it. The Eye - 5/10 Cloverfield - 4/10 It was like Blair Witch in the city... I didn't even finish watching it... Juno - 8/10 Rambo 7/10 How can you not enjoy people's limbs flying off for 2 hours straight? |
Saw 3 - 4/10
This whole series just keeps getting worse. |

SAW 4 Saw 1 was good and original. saw 2 was different but still good with everyone in the house. saw 3 reallllly made me want to leave. there was too much crap in that one and now finally saw 4: such a stupid movie! bad acting, bad directing and everything else is just people getting killed with no points to it. I rate it 3/10 --- 27 dresses My gf dragged me to see this one last week. It wasn't overly bad or good but at least there was some cute girls in the movie. It's a simple story and very predictable as far as what will happen in the end. there was some funny scenes and most of it didn't have any slow or boring moments. If you must see a chick flick, then I would recommend this one right now. I give it a rating of 7/10 |
Serenity:
OK, so I've seen it at least ten times already. But today was the first time with the cast/director commentary on the Special Edition DVD. Whaddaya know, still good. 10/10, but then again, I'm a long-time Browncoat with massive bias issues. Probably not the best judge of the movie. |
Jumper: ugh/10
Weak story, acting, etc. Weak. |
Casablanca - 10/10
One of my favorite movies ever. The gf and I always head down on Valentine's Day to a little theatre that plays it every year. I love a movie where you can laugh in anticipation of a line or exchange you know is coming because it's still as good, if not better, than the first time you saw it. |
The Worlds Fastest Indian - 8/10
I had no interest at all in seeing this movie. Couldn't even tell what it was about based on the previews. The GF bought the DVD as she is an Anthony Hopkins fan. It was a really good story with a very likeable main character. Hopkins plays an elderly New Zealand gear-head who takes his 1920's era Indian motorcycle to the Bonneville salt flats in '67 and sets a land speed record with it. Based on a true story. |
The Notebook. I shouldn't have watched it on Valentine's Day... but I love it. 10/10

Before the Music Dies 9/10. It's a critical view at the music industry and radio. It has interviews with Eric Clapton, Dave Mathews, and others. It also gives good insight on how the industry is run.
Michael Clayton 5/10 I just didn't like it. I liked the actual plot, I just didn't like how it was delivered. Acting was good, but it was edited in such a way that always made me feel like I missed something. It was bloated with dialog that just didn't make any sense. It was like overhearing a conversation between two people you don't know. They talk and talk and know exactly what each other is saying but to the guy not knowing what the conversation is referring to they're just words.. I dunno.. I go back to my first sentence.. I just didn't like it. |
Recent flicks...
I can never keep up with my film reviews. :p
So I keep doing them in these batches. So, in reverse order: The Croupier 9/10 Just watched this film this morning and it's the best movie I've watched in a long while. Made in 1998, it is a British film directed by Mike Hodges and starring Clive Owen (who I've grown to like very much, even though I wasn't fond of Children of Men). It's the story of a rather reflective and imperturbable casino dealer (aka, a croupier) and fledgling novelist and his struggles with women, temptation and betrayal. It is a crime drama of sorts, but mostly it is a movie about odds, chance and the absurdity of the human condition when viewed through the eyes of a dislocated soul. I guess I related to it because that's how I feel so much of the time, lol. But I loved the film. Gosford Park 10/10 I've watched this film many, many times, but I love it so much. My favorite Robert Altman film, by far. An exquisitely crafted film about the intimately connected, yet compulsively estranged worlds of British class society as illustrated by the subtle politics of the upper crust and the regiments of servants, cooks and attendants who care for them. Ostensibly an old-fashioned Agatha Christie-type murder mystery, it is more about the hypocrisy of class discrimination and the prohibitive nature that keeps all of them 'pressed into service.' At least, that's what I take from it. Similar to books by Henry James and Edith Wharton, observers in their time of the 'oppression of proprieties.' The hushed tones and elegant choreography of this film enthrall me. It's like meditation. Suggestion: watch it with the subtitles on...Robert Altman had a tendency to use naturalistic, overlapping dialogue in his films...you can miss a lot. Wonder Boys 10/10 Another one of my all-time favorites. It's a comfort film, much like Gosford Park, I watch it when I'm feeling fragile. If you haven't seen it, you must. Immediately. About Schmidt 10/10 Third in my list of comfort films. I think I reviewed it here before, though. That last scene when Warren is looking at the drawing sent to him by Ndugu and he starts crying is one of my favorite movie moments ever. The Believer 5/10 Weird movie starring Ryan Gosling as a Jew who becomes a neo-Nazi. Don't really have much opinion on it. It wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't say it was good, either. The Assassination of Richard Nixon 8/10 Sean Penn was beyond genius in this film, of course, but I didn't manage to get wrapped up in it. He is absolutely, hands down the only true genius acting in American cinema today. It was very good, but ultimately not impactful. The Woodsman 7/10 I liked it. But that's about it. Kevin Bacon was great. Mos Def - I've never seen him act before. He's very impressive. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers 6/10 Can't really say much about this film. Mediocre all around, in my opinion. Although, Geoffrey Rush does a great Peter Sellers impersonation, most especially a great Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove impersonation. But I was hoping for more...and I really didn't enjoy finding out that Peter Sellers was, well, fucking insane, lol. Far From Heaven 4/10 Meh. Too message-y. The Libertine 5/10 Uh, yeah, meh. Not nearly enough sex. :p Fay Grim 8/10 I loved this follow-up to Henry Fool, which was my favorite Hal Hartley movie even though it was little noticed and quickly forgotten. And Parker Posey is such a fox. :) The Magdalene Sisters 6/10 I'm certain that I was supposed to think this a great, important film, but I didn't find it all that engaging. The only thing that sticks out in my head is reading at the end that the last of these Irish-Catholic slave laundries was closed in 1998. Fucking 1998!!! Jesus Christ...people suck. Vera Drake 9/10 Very sad, but very good. I love Mike Leigh films and this one was a bit of a departure for him. Much more respectful and sentimental of it's subject than most of his other films. The story of a British cleaning woman in 1950's London who 'helps' poor women by performing home-style, non-surgical abortions. A subplot also involves the daughter of one her employers who is date-raped and becomes pregnant, but is able to procure a legal abortion for 'therapeutic' reasons. Imelda Staunton is heartbreakingly good and authentic in the title role. I highly recommend it. The only two movies I've seen in the theater lately: Cloverfield 7/10 It was good, but now, a couple of weeks later, I can barely remember it. National Treasure II 5/10 I know, I know. But we saw this while we were in Naples and Phillip and I couldn't think of anything else we could see with the Boo that wasn't unbearable to think about. It wasn't horrible. Two things stick out in my mind: 1. It was better than the Tomb Raider movies. 2. What the fuck is up with Nicolas Cage's hair?? The Water Horse 8/10 Nope, writing that last 'review' I remembered that we also took the Boo to see this film and it was pretty good. We enjoyed it. |
Cloverfield - 10/10.... 20/10!! 100/10!!
Saw it last night. Talk about an amazing movie!! I think this was honestly one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life. This is not for the weak of stomach, or people who don't like fast motions on the screen. I went in thinking that the camera work would bother me but it did not at all. The only complaint was that I was moving my head to "see around" all the people in the way of the camera, thats how into this movie you get. I loved it!! I am going back to see it later this week as well. |
King Kong 8/10
I'm writing this as it is still on in here. I have to say, I can't really get into it tonight - too distracted - but it's obviously a very affectionate remake of the original and has some of the most effective CGI I have ever seen. I'm glad they've kept Kong very gorilla-like, rather than the upright man-ape sort of creature they've portrayed him as in the past. And the Boo is absolutely loving it. |
Hard Candy 9/10
Summary: A 14-year old girl meets a charming 32-year old photographer on the Internet. Comment: Ellen Page is one of the two main characters in this film. The same Ellen Page who was the main character in Juno, so if you liked her acting in Juno, then you might be a bit shocked to see what she does in Hard Candy. Patrick Wilson plays the photographer who likes the young girls, but soon realizes he just hung out with the wrong one. |
