hey--oldboy is a park chan-wook film too.
i was kind of afraid to watch it, actually, so i started with his new one above. the visuals in his films are quite something. look forward to being scarred. |
Dear, Wendy 10/10
Okay. This film is about a group of young losers. Pacifists. In a small mining town. Who start a gun club. Really. That's what it's about. It is a uniquely beautiful film. It's hard for me to sit here and describe it though. It has a real timeless and placeless quality - although you gather along the way that it is set in a small southern town in the present day. It almost has the feel of a stageplay, in that the small 'town center' is the main setting (and very significant to the story) with just a few other settings. I don't want to get too much into the story - let it reveal itself to whoever decides to watch it. There are no well known actors in it other than Bill Pullman who plays the town sheriff - very well I might add. All of the performances are excellent. Cinematography - beautiful. The club goes down into an underground facility at one of the abandoned mines to shoot their guns. They have this really touching philosophy that if their guns 'see the light of day' then they will want to follow their true nature. So they carry their guns with them everywhere but only take them out at 'the club.' Things don't go exactly as planned for idealists, though. Let's just say the film has some Peckinpah moments. It's a great film and I recommend it highly. It's one I plan to purchase for keeps. |

Shoot 'Em Up - 10/10
This is the perfect movie. Seriously. As you watch it, it reminds you of Grindhouse and Kill Bill, but this movie doesn't borrow anything... it is special and inventive. To give it a cheesey critic analogy; this movie doesn't try to be more than what it is, so it comes out of the barrel spinning in a tight spiral and nails you right between the eyes. Be prepared to be impressed with new types of violence you never knew existed. |

not what i thought the movie would be. it was good but so many places and things were unexplained or didn't make sense that it brought down the feeling of the movie. Had a great start to it with some good action/thrilling moments but then it started to slow down and eventually start sucking. I just hope they don't make a Next part 2. it would be needed to finish the story but i'm not sure they could pull off a whole 2nd movie. My Final Rating for this movie is: 6.5/10 Bourne Ultimatum What a good serie! this is what a good movie is about. good acting and great storyline. I'm not sure i like the crazy close ups but it was still great to see the intense action! I highly recommend watching the dvds of 1 and 2 before seeing 3 just to get a refresh on the names and faces of everyone in the serie. I just wished they explained it a bit more but i guess they might try to pull off a prequel or a 4th movie maybe? overall, go see it at the movies and then wait for the box set collectors edition. My overall rating for this movie is: 8/10 |
Okay, well I've been really lousy at updating my Netflix queue.
Backstory: I have 500 movies on my queue and I treat it like my own personal video store. I have them separated by genre and move items to the top of the list as desired. Drama is the genre at the top of list, so naturally if I don't go in and move other films to the top it will send me whatever is next in line from the drama genre. So that is why this week I ended up in possession of two films that I couldn't watch. The Passion of the Christ and Monster Passion of the Christ - I'm sorry, but not only was this sadistic fantasy unbearable psychically, I thought it was a lousy movie, too. For my Mel Gibson buck I'd go with Apocalypto anyday - it is gruesome and hard to watch, as well, but at least it's a good film. Monster - I made it through about 20 minutes or so of this film. I could tell the performances were skilled, but, sorry I can't do it. Can't go there. I have a good enough imagination, thank you. Don't need to actually see it. So I'll refrain from rating these movies because I turned them both off. I don't recommend either of them. |
Yeah.. Monster was a dumb and unwatchable movie.

Sunshine 4/5
First off I love Danny Boyle. Second I love Sci-Fi. Danny Boyle making a Sci-Fi movie makes me very happy indeed. It's not the perfect movie, there were more than once that my disbelief suspension was put to the test, but it is visually stunning. I highly recommend it. |
Bourne Ultimatum: Finally got to watch this, and my only problem with this as well as the others is the shaking camera. Otherwise awesome movie. I just don't get it. 8/10
Live Free or Die Hard: Wow, have to say it wasn't lame at all. Really enjoyable 8/10 |
I think I'm the only person here who hasn't seen Batman Begins. I watched it last night and will probably watch it again. It was phenomenal. My friend turned to me during the film and said " I think Christian Bale is the greatest actor of his generation". I tend to agree with that assessment. Anything I've seen him in, even if I hated the film, was incredibly well acted. He is the character, whatever that character may be.
I think I'll look up his "filmography" and have an all Bale weekend. |
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The movie actually sucks, but its camp value makes it an enjoyable film. See Matt Damon in drag was great and seeing Luke Perry play yet another high school kid reminded me that the 90s were in fact worse than the 80s.
I'll give it a 3/10, but it has a camp bonus of +4, making the overall score 7/10. |
Envy - Jack Black/Ben Stiller.
Pretty stupid, though since I laughed will give it 3/10 |
3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. This gets a 9/10 from me. For those who haven't seen the previews, this is a Western with Crowe as the outlaw getting escorted to the train to Yuma by Christian Bale. I won't reveal too much of the story which in my opinion was the weakest part. Certain actions by some characters struck me as dumb or unbelievable but I was willing to go along with it since the rest of the movie was so good.
Both Bale and Crowe put out some great performances, you really empathize and understand them by the end as does Ben Foster as Crowe's psychopathic 2nd in command. Alan Tudyk is also in this and puts forth a convincing act unlike Luke Wilson who did an ok job but it was really distracting having him of all people in a hardbitten Western. Anyway, the movie has some good shootout scenes but isn't all action, focusing more on the moral ambiguity available in the West, contrasting Bale's straight and narrow rancher with Crowe's powerful and intelligent outlaw. If you like Westerns at all, it's a must see and highly recommended for anyone else. I'd say it's the best one I've seen since Unforgiven and Tombstone. |

Cradle Will Rock 8.5/10
A very well done film chronicling the 1930's Federal Theater Project and the production of Marc Blitzstein's labor movement musical Cradle Will Rock directed for the stage by Orson Welles. It was made by my personal favorite Hollyweird liberal, Tim Robbins (if you haven't seen Bob Roberts, then you must!). It is a major production and he pulled it off swimmingly. Check out this cast of characters: Hank Azaria ... Marc Blitzstein Rubén Blades ... Diego Rivera Joan Cusack ... Hazel Huffman John Cusack ... Nelson Rockefeller Cary Elwes ... John Houseman Philip Baker Hall ... Gray Mathers Cherry Jones ... Hallie Flanagan Angus Macfadyen ... Orson Welles Bill Murray ... Tommy Crickshaw Vanessa Redgrave ... Countess Constance LaGrange Susan Sarandon ... Margherita Sarfatti Jamey Sheridan ... John Adair John Turturro ... Aldo Silvano Emily Watson ... Olive Stanton Bob Balaban ... Harry Hopkins Jack Black ... Sid Paul Giamatti ... Carlo ...and these are just the well-known cast members. It's a huge production. Sets, costumes, extras...the whole bit. It's quite enjoyable to watch, if maybe a bit heavy-handed with the message here and there. I definitely recommend it. |

3:10 to Yuma 9/10
Wow. I've never really enjoyed westerns, so when I give this a 9/10, for most it could very well be a 10. Damn good acting, and directing. Amazing story. BTW, if the loud ass people behind me are reading this, I'm going to torture and kill your children in front of you. Please, don't talk during the movie. You ruin the experience for everyone around you. |
I'm going to start using thumbs up/sideways/and down to rate films (assuming I remember), because it allows for much more subjectivity. I simply don't think, at least in my case, that rating by numbers is very accurate.
The Fly Thumbs Up The first movie by David Cronenberg I remember seeing, long before I knew who he was (is), and I find it interesting upon rewatching it that while I recognize Cronenberg's style in the film, my memories of it go so far back that I'm incapable of feeling like I am watching a David Cronenberg film. I am simply watching The Fly. And, I suppose, that's a testament to how good it is, that it made such an impact on me when I saw it at a younger age and I am relatively incapable of looking past the film itself to see the director behind it. |

---------------- on to my next review! Shoot'Em Up! Damn! I saw nothing about this movie except for 1 quick clip on tv last week and Halx and Willravel's reviews. that alone made me want to see it even if the other reviews would suck. Boy am I glad I listened to my instinct to see it!! such a great movie from the start to the end. Don't think of it as a serious movie or don't think of it as a "that's not possible, this movie sucks" way and you should REALLY enjoy yourself! The characters were perfect in the whole film: Paul Giamatti as the bad guy is nice and refreshing, Clive Owen is awesome as the main character and Monica Bellucci does a great job in her role! This is one I will buy on DVD to watch again and again. such a high'Five movie! doesn't get a 10 just because it used a bit too much cheesy 1 liners. My Official and Final rating for this movie is: 9.5/10 |
The Philadelphia Story 9/10
Only loses a point for the limp ending. Otherwise an ideal bit of fast talking, star studded cinema. The Lake House 3/10 I really hope the Korean original isn't as clumsy with the interesting premise. Just terrible. If your movie is going to flop anyway, let it flop with style. Don't tack on a preposterous ending. |
hostel 2 -meh...6/10 nothing fresh.. and i already forgot the movie lol

Swimming Pool - 7.5/10
A really good thriller-type movie, but not a great thriller-type movie. Good acting by Charlotte Rampling and the French girl (I don't remember her name - but she's adorable). Cinematically it was very pleasant to watch. Not much there substantial to rave about as far as story goes - still it was a nice lazy Sunday afternoon watch. |
Just going to add my support for Shoot 'em Up. Everything it needed to be. I'm so glad my fiancee wanted to see this on our anniversary. I got a good one!

I don't know if I should be posting this in here or in music but w/e.
David Gilmour: Remember That Night - Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2007) Concert seen at my local Famous/cineplex Silvercity. This was so fucking awesome! it was a live presentation from england of the prerecorded concert that will be out on dvd tomorrow. I saw this saturday. What they did was broadcast it through satellites from england to 162 cinemas in north america(canada and usa). I was one of the lucky ones to see it and i'm glad i did. It started with an anouncer explaining the show and then David came on the scene and started to play the guitar. after his solo, the lights died and it cut to the concert exactly where he had stopped playing. Really awesome feeling. then it was the concert with songs ranging from: On an Island cd to some classic pink floyd. It then followed with a live Q/A with David. it was pretty cool. after this, he went right back to 1 song with his band live so he was sweet!!! Before and after all this, they were playing the documentary of the concert which will be on the 2 disc DVD. If you missed it, then too bad. I really recommend seeing this concert in full view with awesome sound. don't cheap out with the sound. crank it way up! My Final rating for my cinema experience of this concert is: 9/10 |
The Audition - 9/10
In the interest of not giving spoilers, there's little I want to say about the film itself. But here's a background that those who have seen The Audition will appreciate... A few years ago we watched one of those "best movie moments" shows, which showed parts of the last 15 minutes of this Japanese film from 2000. It is all too spoilery to describe here, but my wife put it on the bottom of our 100-plus title Netflix list. This past week it came to the top of out Netflix list, and we watched it on Saturday night. I had completely forgotten all about it and why it was on the list, and I avoided reading anything about it until the opening sub-titles. Well, those of you who've seen it will have some idea how it went. |

The Fountain - 8.5/10 A damn fine story with damn fine acting, but I can't forgive the 3rd of the story that is completely up for grabs. That's just me though... other people might like stories that are up for interpretation. Otherwise, its a very welcome and enchanting experience. |

Eastern Promises: Two thumbs up Excellent performances, particularly by Viggo Mortensen who probably deserves an Oscar nomination. As usual for Cronenberg, the violence is spaced out, but extremely effective when it happens. One scene is particularly ruthless and thrilling, while also providing a level of commentary regarding the innate homoeroticism of violence in film (if you don't know what I mean, think Roman gladiators). But exploring the connection between sex and violence (and technology, but not in this film) is pretty standard for Cronenberg. It's only in limited release right now, but I highly recommend seeing it when it opens in a theatre near you. A Scanner Darkly: One thumb up The rotoscoping was certainly interesting, but I'm undecided whether I think it was better than live action + CGI would have been. Some have claimed this movie is uninspired, but perhaps those people don't realize that Philip K. Dick - the author whose novel the film is based on - helped set many of the standards we have today. Overall, I really liked it, and while I have not read A Scanner Darkly, I think it succeeded in replicating Dick's style based on some of the other things of his that I have read. |
Fracture 5/10
Only watched the whole thing for Anthony Hopkins, and to figure out just how "smart" this character was. I don't buy the ending nor the alternate endings. He was too smart of a character to miss one small item, which is why the alternate ending was changed, and then the final real ending, well he'd have thought about that as well. Casino 8/10 I thought it was good Scorcese. Good mob movie, only it was too freakin' long. Very good style and Vegas movie, just too long. |
We got free tickets to Knocked Up, which made it worth it. I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10... not too bad, fairly entertaining and real, but not terribly memorable. Other than the live childbirth scene which cause me yet again to shove any potential maternal instinct as far away as possible. :p

watched the condemned last night, i give it a six...

Bad Education - 8/10
A great story that unfolds rather than twists and turns. It didn't have the extra STUFF that it needs to make it a movie that I could love, but the quality of the storytelling carried it through. |
Batman 8.3/10
It's the last movie I watched. Considering the direction that the Batman comics took in the 80s, adding graphic novels that were able to get back to the Cain roots of the character, the darker Batman was a very wise decision to go. Tim Burton would not have been my first choice in 1989, but considering his body of work he did surprisingly well allowing his vision not to do harm to the history of Batman. I feel his only real mistake was in the casting of Michael "Mr. Mom" Keaton. It's not that Keaton did a bad job, as a matter of fact, he exceeded all expectations. The problem was that the casting was so bizarre, I found myself distracted by it. Like if Robin Williams was cast to play the Silver Surfer. Also, Kim Basinger could have been played by a cardboard cutout of herself with a zip-cord that made a screaming sound. Jack Nicholson was almost too perfect as the Joker. He really gave that role the performance it deserved, and he has my thanks for that. Quite an enjoyable movie, if a bit odd at times. |
The Illusionist 7/10
Perfectly serviceable. The twists are slightly telegraphed, but the acting is good (Jessica Biel is actually okay) and the story is fairly engaging. |

Grindhouse - 7.5/10 overall.
Death Proof was all kinds of awesome. I'm a Tarantino fan and this movie truly felt like one of his works. I remember many here being turned off by the dialog, but I loved every line and the chase scene was great. That part is getting a 9/10 from me. Planet Terror...ehh, I guess you have to be a fan of the genre to appreciate this kind of movie. I'm not, so I wasn't as entertained as I was with Death Proof. This was is 6/10. |
oldboy
a fine lovely film. lovely lovely if a bit tough for the squeamish. it has the recursive story structure that korean horror films seem to prefer, to be built around. so the narrative level is actually interesting. definitely recommended. |
David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch: One thumb up Bizarre, but not as bizarre as it seems. Definitely an interesting and enjoyable ride. |
Eastern Promises. 7/10
This movie was actually pretty good, but suffered from awkward dudity. I can stand dutity in a movie when it's a part of the story, necessary or in some way adding to the story or character, but in this I wasn't cool seeing Arogorn's ass (and more). The storyline was actually quite brilliant, and the twists were subtle and very well portrayed. Naomi Watts is one of the most talented actresses out there, but I wish they would have given her character one more dimension in order to utilize her potential. Armin Mueller-Stahl can do no wrong in my eyes and has been a personal favorite since Shine. He does quite well in this, which actually made me want to see a back story on him. Viggo Mortensen was a force of nature. His performance was almost distracting it was so good. Cept the dudity. Vincent Cassel played every prick you knew in high school that was Spoiler: actually gay and a complete drunk. He played it off so well, I found myself wanting to hit him in the face. Cronenberg has a unique directorial style that he's really starting to develop. History of Violence really turned me off to him, but he shows a great deal of promise in Easter Promises (I made a funny!). I'll be watching his career with great interest. I'd hope to see a sequel to this movie, as the story and characters have a lot more than a few hours to give, but I won't hold my breath. |
Wow, I couldn't disagree more about the nudity, or about the worthiness of a sequel. I think it's perfect ending just where it did. As for Cronenberg, his career has already spanned four decades and 36 films, and I think his directorial style is pretty well-developed actually ;)
Oh well, to each their own. |
I'm actually a big fan of Cronenberg, but History of Violence was my least favorite film of his. I'm interested to see which perspective (of my own) that this Cronenberg film appeals to.
|
I'm with SecretMethod70 on this one, Viggo Mortensen's nudity in this film was anything but gratuitous. It certainly wasn't there for the "oooo penis" factor. It worked perfectly within the context of the scene to portray the vulnerability of the situation.
I agree that Naomi Watts is very good, but I don't think they needed to use her more. I think her life/character as a contrast and foil to the Russian lives/characters works better when it's not overly complicated. And yeah, Cronenberg has been around for quite some time, his career isn't exactly developing. ;) |
I liked eXistnZe, but it really didn't feel like Cronenberg came into his own as a director until History of Violence.
Martin Campbell has been directing since the 70s, but he didn't really make anything noteworthy until GoldenEye. It was then that he could make things like Mask of Zorro, Beyond Borders, and Casino Royale. |

Resident Evil: Extinction = 7/10
Original Dawn of the Dead (Romero)= 9/10 |
cronenberg is interesting...but i basically agree with mm that history of violence was my least favorite of his. dead ringers, on the other hand, is the shit.
i liked naked lunch quite alot. the book is much better--and ticket that exploded much better than naked lunch (i think anyway)---i am a big fan of the ornette coleman soundtrack and i thought that cronenberg caught something interesting about burroughs curious world that was interesting on its own (apart from the book). i dont find burroughs fucked up----i find him to be a fascinating writer. |
Resident Evil: Extinction. It actually wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Sure, it was a bit empty, but so have the other RE movies been. I'll give it 6/10. I was entertained.
|
A Scanner Darkly - 2/10
The imagination made a better story after reading the Netflix synopsis than watching the movie produced. This movie had nothing going for it. I couldn't even finish it because it was so fucking boring. I only give it 2 points because I got further into it than I did Mystery Men. |

3:10 to Yuma ~ 2 Eyes opened*
I've never been a huge fan of westerns, but ever since I saw the ads for this movie I knew I wanted to see it. I wasn't disappointed. Not only was the cast excellent, the story line was very interesting and I had no idea how it was going to end. I don't know if this is because of my lack of western watching or if it really was that good. The editing was a bit choppy in the beginning. Transitions were not put together well and the camera work reminded me of watching a movie in standard form. But it wasn't anything too distracting, just noticeable. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Narcoleptic Movie Rating Guide *2 eyes wide opened *2 eyes opened *1 eye opened *fell asleep halfway through *didn't even stay awake through the opening credits |
Godzilla: Final Wars 4/10
I love kaiju (suitmation) movies. I've always been a fan since I was a kid, and from time to time even enjoyed watching Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (pink ranger was a bonus!) This was by far one of the best potentials since they brought lots of kauji out for a movie before mothballing Godzilla for another 5-10 years. Hedorah, Ebirah, both make minor cameos, as does Manda, Zilla (American CGI Godzilla,) and Rodan. Anyways, the movies normally are quite campy but this one was really extra campy. |

Knocked up: 6.5/10 I really liked some of the Dialog, Especially between Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd. It had i's moments but wasn't as funny as everyone had lead me to believe. Maybe expectations got the best of me.
BUG.. 11/10.. Wow.. Wtf.. Weird and interesting role for Ashley Judd.. I gave it an 11/10 because the movie is just beyond giving an accurate score.. |
Zodiac - 5.5/10
It was a good story, and it moved along quite well in the beginning, but it was SO SLOW toward the middle and end. Over 2 hours of a story that you know won't end with any excitement is a bit much. |
Leaving Las Vegas 7/10
excellent performance by Nicholas Cage, story was VERY depressing. I still don't know who Elizabeth Shue was talking to in some of the scenes. Top Gun 8/10 I feel the need for speed! jets flying about.... |
Good Luck Chuck
6.5/10 I think my rating may be a little harsh but I think it was a fairly cliche romantic comedy. The premise was unique in that every girl he slept with found their true love with the next guy they hooked up with. and it WAS a funny movie, there were parts that had me laughing pretty damned hard. But you know, I just walked out going "well, that was funny, but formulaic" so if you're ok with it being another "guy meets girl, guy screws things up with girl, guy wins girl over" movie, then you're good to go. |
3:10 to Yuma
Liked it a lot. It reminded me of many of the classics, which is why I consider it worth a watch. I figured the idea behind classic westerns was lost long ago...Not to mention it was quite inspiring. -Will |
Rocky Balboa - wow, I never noticed how shitty Stallone was as an actor. The movie wasn't particularly enjoyable. 4/10
House on Haunted Hill - bleh. For a horror movie, this wasn't even scary and the "darkness" effect looked cheesy as hell. Not a single cool death either. 3/10 The Good Shepherd - not the type of movie I particularly enjoy. I watched it in two parts due to its almost 3 hour length. I'll give it a 6/10 for finally picking up in the latter half. |
Ouch, sounds like a rough time renting lately Logan.
Next - 3/10 The opening 10 minuets or so were pretty damn cool. But after that it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. He looks like a perv with that haircut of his, getting Biel with that?!? I don't think so. Black Snake Moan - 6/10 Better than I thought it would be, not at all what I expected. The Host - 6.5/10 Once again not at all what I expected. I thought it had alot of plot elements that went no where and were not explained. Not a bad movie though as far as they go. Blades of Glory (I think thats what its called) - 4/10 The new one with Napoleon Dynamite and Will Ferrell in it. Not that great, parts of it were funny and Napoleon's GF was pretty hot. Over all very disappointing with lots of boring moments. |
Smokin' Aces: 6/10
a dumb movie with enough action and debauchery to salvage the experience. With a little more discipline, it could have been a real good flick. |
1408
the version I saw was the director's cut so the ending is very different from the cinema. I must say that it toook way too long to get to the point but once we were there, it was not bad. I felt like there needed to be much more deaths in a creepy way to make this movie better. overall, i recommend it if you want to see an ok horror movie that's different from all the teen slasher flicks. My Overall Rating for this Movie is: 6.9/10 Blades of Glory Quick review: it's got some laughs. But don't expect a great story. It's all in the preview!! For a night when you don't want to use your brain, this is the movie to get. My Overall Rating for this Movie is: 6.5/10 Knocked Up wow. completely over hyped! I still liked this movie and it did have some very funny parts but the overall experience was not as good as the 40yr old Virgin. It did have some good acting though. just not enough funny dialogs to keep me interested the whole way through. I will still recommend it IF you haven't seen any previews and you have no expectations. My Overall Rating for this Movie is: 7/10 Superman DOOMSDAY This is the animated movie that just just came out. I actually really enjoyed this for a superman movie. SPOILER: The story follows superman a while after the original serie. he's now older and dating Lois. Lex is still trying to kill him in everyway possible. His drilling team find a spaceship DEEP under the rocks like 5miles underground. they wake up a monster called DOOMSDAY who was created by the Kriptonians so now he wants revenge and the only Kriptonian left is superman... the animation is not bad and the voice acting is pretty great! I really enjoyed the story even if some say it's not accurate to the comic book. My Overall Rating for this Movie is: 7.5/10 |
In the Valley of Elah
Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon
In the theater. This is a powerful movie about the disappearance of a soldier after returning from Iraq. Great performances by Tommy Lee [the father] Charlize [detective] and I always enjoy Susan Sarandon[ the mother]. No matter what your politics are or your level of patriotism or national ties I recommend this movie to adults. Do not see this movie if you want to keep your head buried in the local sand. 9/10 :expressionless: :orly: :expressionless: |
The Pursuit of Happyness
8/10 story you can pick, either person achieving the american dream rags to riches, or a story about a boy and his father. a touching story either of them. reminds me that I have to not settle for anything but accomplishment. |
Waiting - 6.5/10
[Buy - Rent - Download - Avoid] Not bad, by any means, but definitely not the Citizen Kane of "angst-riddled teen-to-twenty-somethings in dead-end job" movies. I suppose if you've ever been a waiter, the anger and frustrations of the characters will indulge you a bit more, but only because you'll sit there yelling, "I'VE HAD THAT CUSTOMER!" to the screen and thinking about what you did, didn't do, or got away with at the time. Kudos for representing real party atmospheres without succumbing to the usual device of having stoner jokes just because there is marijuana being smoked. Thumbs-down to the casting choices... a lot of the "customers" are like caricatures (but not in a good way) and some of the main supporting cast is pretty limp... fairly one-dimensional and underdeveloped. Still though, funny/fun movie. The Jacket - 8/10 [Buy - Rent- Download - Avoid] Adrien Brody is, I think, officially addicted to indy films... and that's great, because independent filmmakers need someone of his high caliber to stay interested in doing the less-Hollywood, low-budget stuff. He's constantly doing indy films. Keira Knightly is also great, as always, and hot as hell. Brody and Knightly, themselves, are "worth the price of admission". Plot-wise, I was very happy with the way things progressed. It was interesting, and had a fairly unique storyline. The interplay between Brody and Knightly was especially good, taking into account the wide degree of emotional change they both go through. My negative take on it would be the pacing might seem a bit slow at points. Generally, this does not concern me personally unless I think it's actually detrimental to the movie. For this, it seemed the pace slowed a little at times because of good storytelling, not bad. My other point would be that the ending left me wanting a little more... not an explanation, but more climax. The story progression lends itself well to the build-up of tension to the climax, and I just don't feel it was driven to full potential, hence this movie is 8/10 instead of 9/10. Really, though, it's still a great movie, and not disappointing in the end. |

Bent - 3/10
Garbage. Take a poor quality holocaust movie, throw in Clive Owen as a self-hating homosexual in love with a fellow prisoner, for some reason give it an NC-17 rating, pour in at least 45 minutes of absolute boredom, and stir until your eyes roll out of your head. |
The Princess Bride
10/10 Because it's just so funny to watch over and over and over it's inconceivable (You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.) to rate it any lower. |
I just watched Transformers on HD DVD. Lemme tell ya, I have a 110" Projector and watching this movie was quite possibly one of the funnest experiences I've had with it. If there's any movie that will sell HD DVD it's this. The movie is freaking beautiful. I gave the movie an 8/10 after watching it at the theater. I gotta give it a 10/10 on HDDVD.

The Jacket 9/10
I liked it immensely, despite Kiera Knightly's horridly repulsive appearance. she freaks me out anyway, but she dressed the part. I wasn't expecting some of the twists, but it was surprisingly intelligent. If you liked Das Experiment, etc, you'd dig it. Plus, an emaciated Brody was interesting to watch. |
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - 1/10 (one point for the hot redhead in glasses.)
Fucking retarded movie. |
Downfall 8/10
Based on two accounts of Hitler's last days, but primarily from his secretary. Makes some attempt to humanize the people in the Nazi regime (secretaries, doctors, soldiers), without apologizing for their crimes. The suffering of the citizens of Berlin is pretty heartwrenching. |
FRACTURE 9/10 not Hopkin's usual good guy role ,he's a real bad ass in this one.
|
Outsourced, 8.5/10 I'll post the review I'm writing of this here when I'm done. It's a cute romantic comedy, sweet story of a man that discovers India when he is sent there to set up his department that's been outsourced there. I started a thread on it here

Knocked Up - 6/10
Just was not that funny, really long and really draggy. The only really funny part that had me laughing out loud was when he was having sex with his pregnant GF. 28 Weeks Later - 6/10 As far as modern horrors go I suppose it was okay. It was mostly people throwing blood up on each other though, meh. 1408 - 5/10 Really really draggy. I rented this and there were a lot of scenes in the commercial that I did not see in it, I don't know what is up with that but it really pissed me off. I would not recommend any of these movies to anyone. |
We Own the Night - 8/10
Joaquin Phoenix did a top-drawer performance. The car-chase scene is one of the best you'll see--truly gut-wrenching. There were some pacing and believability issues. If it weren't for the latter, it would have been a 9 or a 10. |
We Own The Night - 6/10
This movie needed a lot more complexity. Some would call it predictable, but I wouldn't even assume that it ever tried to make you think it would happen any other way. The car chase scene is definitely awesome, but the Bourne Ultimatum scene tops it. |
28 Weeks Later - 7.5 / 10. A nice follow up to the original. The way that they reintroduced the virus was quite believeable. There were some very creepy moments, but some of it was too much. There were a couple of things which just turned me off of it. Definitely not as good as the original, but still worth a watch.
1408 - 4 / 10. This movie was brutal. Not only was it not scary, it was downright lame. Extremely predictable, and it had some seriously SLOW stretches. Save yourself the 1.5 hours and watch something else... |
Crank - 8/10
Nonstop action, no story, great effects. I had fun all the way through. Mindless flick to enjoy in surround sound. |
Turistas - 2/10
I have no idea what prompted me to watch this crap, but I rented it last night. You know a movie a bad when you start checking your email and chatting online halfway through. ---------------------------- Starship Troopers - 8/10 This is probably my 20th time watching it and it's still fun as hell. Two points off for some cheese, but overall it's a great flick to relax to. ----------------------------- An American Haunting - 5/10 I'm actually not very familiar with the Bell Witch, so I popped in the DVD expecting absolutely nothing. Good thing, too, because had I expected something more, the score would have been lower. Cheap scares abound - I've actually just stop paying attention to them halfway through expecting something to pop out or a loud sound to bang. Acting is decent, so points for that. |
Psycho (Original) - 6/10
I suppose at the time this was great. I mostly enjoyed the bad acting, it was great. The ending was especially hilarious. The Thing - 8/10 IMO still one of the greatest horror movies ever. Blade 2 - 6/10 I don't remember this movie being as cheesy as it was. It was okay I suppose, but I don't care to see it again. Very bad acting and terrible acting. |
cq
hilarious, smart film. dumb, too. everything you'd want on a night during which you feel like crap thanks to a cold and are tired thanks to other activities that a smarter person would have foregone. we all have those nights. this is the film for them. |
Perfume: A story of a murderer-9/10
An excellent story with an unusual character with an unusual talent, but the amazing part happens at the end of the film where 750 extras get naked and a massive orgy occurs. I was not expecting that to happen, so it gets an extra point from an 8 to a 9. |
30 Days of Night - 8 / 10
Great set (reminded me of John Carpenter's The Thing in many ways) and solid characters. The bad guys were hyped up, wedged faced, cocaine-is-a-helluva-drug vampires that raided Marilyn Manson's closet and don't like to wash their faces. The arctic temperatures didn't phase them. The good guys were local-yokel cop (Harnett) and his fire marshal exwife (and other who remain mildly forgettable) who manage to take it to the hyper-suckers with a variety of armaments including some hot-hot bear trap action. God view of town being eaten alive. Constantly neck snapping with Nosferatu kung-fu. Little girl gets decapitated. No tits, no ass. Minimal gun usage. No cheesy one-liners. The finale fight ending was a bit too Dragonball Z for me, but it did the job. |
Thanks for the review, and the heads up on it. Definitely wanna check it out :)

Lady in the Water - 6/10
It was alright. That's all I can really say about it. |
28 Weeks Later 3/10
Weak. Hubby and I were both bored by the end of the movie. I'm not really a big fan of horror, but I thoroughly enjoyed the first one so I was pretty excited about this one after reading some good reviews. The premise of why the virus returns was actually decent (I was skeptical), but the story itself was lame and I didn't give a damn about the characters. I would have given it 2 stars but I love Robert Carlyle. I don't recommend this movie at all. |
300. The story of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans held off a million Persians by funnelling them through a narrow mountain pass. I thought this was ok in places, some nice gorey fight scenes but the dialogue/voiceover was annoying. They were trying to make it "deep" or something. The whole thing was done on blue-screen and its quite well done.
It takes a while to get going but it's not really worth it. Not as good as I thought it would be. 4 out of 10. I would like to say that I agreed with Medusa about 28 Weeks Later. Loved the first one though. |
interkosmos
jim finn brilliant fake documentary about the east german space colonization/interplantery archive programme of the middle 1970s. you eventually find out what is going on, but it's goofy to say more than that. i have a real thing for soviet/east european 60s kitsch, particularly the hip sci-fi stuff--you know, the mosfilms look--solaris being an example that attains a level of genius rarely seen by us mortals--the musicals collected in "east side story" being the kitschy hip side. the look of this film is perfect. PERFECT. closest thing i've seen to it is viktor pelevin's novel "omon ra" which is also brilliant. o yeah--there are footnotes at the end of the film. and the music and sound are excellent throughout. track this film down. see it. that is all. |
Across the Universe: 5/10. It's too a literal interpretation of The Beatles music and way over the top in places. I mean they've got the Merry Pranksters bus, with quite obviously Neal Cassidy at the wheel, but instead of Ken Kesey, you've got Bono playing "Doctor Robert" and they stop at the house of "Dr. Cleary." I mean, give me a break, if you are going to go literal about some aspects, then go literal about the whole thing. Personally, I think it would have been a better movie with the plot intact and a beatles soundtrack rather than some kind of 'Beatles Musical'.

Boy, it's been a long time since I wrote any movie reviews...let's see...I have watched:
(2) Costa-Gavras films - I had been meaning to see these staples of our modern-era liberalism for a long time, and I can't say I was very moved by either of them. Missing - 7/10 The story of an American ex-pat who disappears while living in an unidentified S American country in the midst of a brutal military coup - a coup which turns out to have been instigated in part by the US government. Starring Sissy Spacek (his wife) and, thankfully, Jack Lemmon (his father). If it weren't for Jack Lemmon's heart-wrenching performance in this film I would have rated it lower. I love him. :hearts: Lemmon plays a naive American conservative who, in the process of trying to find out what happened to his son, is enlightened to the brutality and oppression his country is willing to overlook in its fight against communism. As for the film itself, I found its message to be a little heavy-handed for our age. Plus, the idea of being shocked by US support of murderous governments in South America is kind of quaint these days. and Z 8/10 This one was much better, even though it was weighed down with some pretty clunky self-righteousness, too, but hey the concept of being a liberal was experiencing a new age, lol! I always love watching Yves Montand sashay around and looking cool, but his time in the movie was entirely too brief. The fight scenes are laughably bad, but the chase scenes are monumental for their day. All in all, it was a good watch, but would have been so much more so in 1969. When I was 4, lol. I bet my parents enjoyed it! MST3K: Touch of Satan 7/10 Not nearly as good as Prince of Space, but it definitely has its moments of uncanned hilarity. My daughter, the 8-year-old, most enjoyed the scene where the old 100-year-old devil grandma is sitting and looking into a mirror and one of the commentators goes 'who's got it going on? me, that's who!' guess you had to be there.... The Original Kings of Comedy 10/10  I have a whole new appreciation for Bernie Mac. :hearts:  About A Boy 9/10 The only Hugh Grant film that I know of that would earn a 9/10. I found this movie to be charming and it made me feel happy. Both Grant and the kid gave excellent performances. The Last King of Scotland 8/10 This movie was a little odd. The story of a Scotsman who became Idi Amin's personal doctor after seizing power in Uganda in the early 70's. Forest Whitaker earned every bit of acclaim he earned - it's easy to dismiss as being over the top, but there was a lot of psychological subtlety in his performance. The style of the movie was a little unsettling, though, kind of like a cross between Boogie Nights and Hotel Rwanda. Gawd...that's awful. :p But I enjoyed it for the most part, and, if the information in the film is accurate, I learned a lot, too. More ugly, horrible, devastating meddling by the West in other people's countries. Which I guess brings these reviews full circle. |
See No Evil - 4/10.
It was decent. Could be more gorey given the concept. Horror film my ass. Little Miss Sunshine - 6/10 Okay, some parts of these movies were mildly amusing, but the whole way through I just kept wondering what people saw in this film to proclaim it one of the best of 2006. I just don't get it. Way overhyped. |
Fracture 5/10
I've seen better acting, plot development, and suspense on Law and Order. Anthony Hopkins obviously needed the paycheck. |
Borat - 6.5/10
Stupid, humorous, not very many laugh out loud moments. However, I was entertained. |
Battle Royal
I've seen this like 5 or 6 times and it's still fucking awesome every time! so many characters to keep you entertained it's awesome! the story is simple yet with every character doing it's own thing, it's very enjoyable! for a foreign movie, this is one of the best. highly recommended for almost everyone who likes a little action. I give this movie a score of 9/10 |
Good Will Hunting - 9/10
[Buy - Rent- Download - Avoid] I know, I know... I shouldn't have just seen this movie. I should have seen it years ago. If you haven't seen this movie, and don't like Ben Affleck, you might find a new appreciation for him in this movie. Robin Williams is incredible, as always, and Matt Damon's performance shows us what we already know: he's fucking great. This movie gets top marks (I've practically never given out a 10/10) for the full plot, rich characters, and wonderful story. Of course, I may be a little biased because the movie's set in the Boston area and I grew up a bit south of Boston, so the accents immediately make me happy. Speaking of making me happy, Minnie Driver is quite nice as well, and really delivers (in her natural English accent, which is also a soft spot for me). All in all, it's very well written and played out by everyone involved. If you haven't seen it, go out and get it now. American Gangster - 9/10 (coming next week to theaters) [Buy - Rent- Download - Avoid] It's a story about violence in high, but appropriate (not "just because"), amounts. It's a story about drugs. It's a story with raw language, and some nudity (where it belongs, and not where it doesn't). Denzel Washington is both hardcore and a gentleman. Russell Crowe is intense and . You can get a story synopsis anywhere, so I'll just give you a snapshot of the experience. This movie is extremely well done. Cinematography, attention to detail for the time period, characters... all very good. It's not a "shoot everything that moves because hollywood loves gun play" movie. It's got a powerful storyline (based on the true story of the main character, Frank Lucas), and shows you the "gangster" world in gritty detail. Crowe is great as the no-bullshit honest cop working against illegal drugs and those who would allow (and even profit from) their presence. Go out and see it. Don't wait to rent it, or catch it some time on a movie channel- go out and catch it in theaters when it comes out. |
