And More....

Kinsey

Liam Neeson does an excellent job portraying one of the most important educators in American history, in my opinion. One could argue that society was heading towards a sexual revolution whether Kinsey came onto the stage or not, but one could not argue that once he did, America and the world could never be the same.

Kinseys research was groundbreaking. He truly was a pioneer. This film opened my eyes to a lot of things. I understand that the drama was accentuated for the purposes of film, but nonetheless I felt that the film was very well put together by Condon of Gods and Monsters fame.

The only part I didn't like was John Lithgow's character, as Kinseys father. Especially the scene where Kinsey interviews his father. It felt forced and unnecessary. Otherwise I think this film is great, and I think it's an important film.

And again, (I'm beginning to feel that if I didn't post here I wouldn't be posting at all lately...)

Run Lola Run

Who hasn't seen, or at least heard of this film? Very few I suspect. Known for it's orginality and boombastic electronica soundtrack, this film takes you on a journey, or on three separate journeys of Lola's attempt to find 100,000 marks to save her boyfriend from immenent death. Each journey is different. The movie is fast paced, delightfully odd, and interesting to watch.

I suppose if I had seen this movie when it came out I would have higher praise for it. I've heard more about it than almost any other indie movie, and so I knew most of what was going to happen before I had seen it. Nonetheless I can recognise that it's a unique film and original ideas are extremely hard to come by these days...

Throne of Blood

Kurosawa's version of MacBeth. Really very good, although the very end goes on a little long. Lady MacBeth is still the driving force, but she's a lot less prominent of a character all the same, which is odd. Definitely worth watching.

Lord of War

Fantastic. A somewhat true view of the life of an arms dealer right after the end of the cold war. It was actually loosely based on 2 people. Great performance by Nicholas Cage in my opinion.

If you liked Resident Evil, you'll like this. Great action movie and lots of cool stuff. The Rock did a pretty good job.

Talk To Her

I guess Almodovar is a popular film director, and I guess his films are considered very artistic and thought provoking... I guess...

Well, I'm not a film student, although I love watching foreign films, but I didn't find that this film in particular struck any kind of chord with me. I didn't feel sympathetic towards any of the characters, I wasn't swept up by the dialogue or the flow of the plot. I felt weirded out by the flashback of the miniature man who crawls inside the womans vagina (although I got that that is what the guy wanted to do symbolically and physically).
I don't know. Maybe I'm getting older. Maybe I don't have the same eye for exotic, risk taking films anymore. I just didn't buy what this film was selling.

Not full 10 points because I wish it was longer! Oh, this movie has everything, pretty pretty costumes, beautiful sets, lovely music, incredible story and of course Tilda Swinton - le sigh... Also, I can (could) dance the dance they did on the ice banquet. So there.

Kill Bill Vol 2

I've discovered that I like Tarantino films. I've seen this film several times and it is becoming a comfort movie for me. I started watching Jackie Brown the other night, I recorded it so I'll watch it later on. I like how Tarantino films flow and I like the storytelling style. Very entertaining.

Great acting, tight story, believable characters. Not a "must see" in the theater, but not to be missed

The Weather Man. Yawn. 5/10.

Michael Caine was the only person worth watching in the movie. Nicholas Cage is incredibly annoying in this movie and if he yelled "dildo" one more time, I thought I was going to scream.

I saw a little of A History of Violence, and a little of Munich. I recommend that everyone watch Munich. It starts off at the 1972 Olympic games during the hostage crisis. It's based on a true story. The first half gets a 9/10. Got to dl the other half.

A History of Violence is great too. The story gets better as it gets more violent :thumbsup:

I watched Waiting last night. 1/10 I found myself waiting for it to be over. Then I started skipping scenes and fast forwarding. Finally I just turned it off. Don't waste your time. I had friends tell me it was awful and I should have listened.

Jersey Girl - 6/10.

Yes, its a chick flick, but it has Liv Tyler in, and shes foxy (plus i've just got in from training and i needed something easy on the brain). The number of times i wanted to bitch slap ben affleck, i lost count somewhere around the diner scene. Needless to say, Liv made things better, but cheesy bits reigned true, especially at the end.
Ah well, t'was an entertaining romp none-the-less.

Gilda 02-21-2006 04:29 PM

I have Jersey Girl on DVD and have watched it a half dozen times. It is without a doubt one of my favorite chick flicks. It comes just short of Where the Heart Is.

Final Destination 3:

It's a typical dead teenager movie, and probably the purest form of the genre ever devised. The formula is strictly followed: A young person has a vision of a disaster, averts the disaster, saving a group of people who are then killed off one by one unless someone intervenes to save them.

The pure part of it comes in the villain. Death is the villain. There's nobody stalking them, they just die in these strange Rube Goldbergesque elaborate deathtraps.

The first, and most intricate, is easily the best as four different innocuous actions add up to a very elaborate death trap. I could feel myself grinning as I followed the series of steps that lead to a couple of very gruesome deaths for a couple of innocent girls, both played by soft porn stars so that they could have elaborate, lingering closeups of the their silicone breasts on several occasions.

It's definitely a strictly "disengage brain" movie, but a lot of fun if you like this sort of thing. Which I do. The mechanics of the better deathtraps appeals to my meticulous nature.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, funny with likable characters.

In the Olympic spirit, The Cutting Edge was aired. A quaint romantic comedy from 1992 film about a hockey player turned figure skater's journal to the National Championships. It's nothing to write home about because it is just that spectacular or was it destined to win any awards other than being a nice, feel-good movie with a few classic lines to make you smile.

settie 02-21-2006 10:28 PM

Unleashed starring Jet Li and Bob Hoskins.... what a terrific movie. It is easily my favourite movie now. Its a little film noir with intense action and drama....such a unique plot too, its really something fresh and not regurgitated martial arts stories. Easily a 10/10. I plan on buying it :) Plus, I completely fell in love with Jet Li in this movie, he was just so adorable! ^_^

My friend let me borrow Waiting.
As we are all in the restaurant business, we all saw people we've known and some, even ourselves in it. I honestly believe one needs to have been in the industry to get it or care. And yes, to a point, that IS how it is working in them. *smiles*
Amusing film with a narrow appeal.

Really bizarre Thai movie about the legend of Nang Nak. Very common legend in almost any culture about men who go off to war and their wives left behind. But very, very strange. I'm still not sure if I liked it. Heck, I'm not even sure what the title was (the only thing they didn't subtitle). The scenery was great as was the background music, but it did get a bit annoying after awhile. I'm ashamed to say that their teeth freaked me out and half the time I was paying more attention to the color of their teeth (was it black? was it red? was it brown?) than the story because it was so familiar and I knew what would happen.

5/10... I think.

Hilarious, totally uncouth, pointless and full of ever-so-interesting... um... characters. This was definitely the pick-me-up, laugh-so-hard-the-water-came-out-my-nose idiocy that I needed. David Cockerfield killed me.

8/10 for this unashamedly non-PC movie.

I usually enjoy Samuel L. Jackson films, but Freedomland has jumped right up to this year's "so far" least favorite for me.

Oliver Twist (The 2005 remake directed by Roman Polanski)-7/10. I thought it was a depressing movie and I felt bad for Oliver throughout the entire story.

Rent-6.5/10 . The movie was okay. The story is outdated and I thought the songs were cheesy. Not a big fan of this musical.

Domino-8/10. I watched this movie with extremely low expectations thanks to all the reviews I have read, but if I thought it was a decent film. I was expecting that kind of camera movement/style from Tony Scott. I mean, if you didn't like Man on Fire because of the style, then you might not like this film. Although, both stories are unrelated, they have the same camera style.

Feardotcom- 1/10. A movie that attempted to be a horror film didn't exactly bring a few scares to the viewer (which was me). The entire story was shit and it didn’t go anywhere.

noodle 02-26-2006 07:36 PM

Maria Full of Grace.

First of all, when the title is grammatically incorrect, it bugs me. Probably would do very well on Lifetime instead of HBO. Story was gritty for awhile, then more predictable and transparent towards the end. The main actress was exceptional, given the material, so I will bump it up to a 7/10.

Kostya 02-26-2006 07:40 PM

The Hidden Blade.

A solid effort from Yoji Yamada, not quite as good as The Twilight Samurai, but I very much enjoy his subdued tales of late Tokugawa Japan.

Felicity Huffman was amazing. This film succeeded way beyond my expectations. I am in awe............

Alfie 5/10

A very good film, Jude Law can be great at times, but the ending SUCKED. I was expecting him to learn his lesson and settle down with someone, it was actually quite fun trying to guess whether it would be one of the women or someone else. Then, they cut it all off, and the film goes from being a good romp watchable again for the funny moments, to a pile of crapsack.
They want to make Alfie 2, i need some damned closure!

Serenity 5/10
Animal Mother was this movie's only saving grace. The captain was horribly miscast - obviously Harrison was otherwise occupied.

The Cave 3/10
Not much of a thriller at all. It had the token characters in these type of movies (including the hottie Piper Perabo), but the problem that I faced was that once they had equipped themselves to go searching in the underground caves by donning wetsuits, a couple of the characters blended together; especially with the dark lighting of the area. I wasn't expecting much, and I didn't get much in return: Have no worries if you want to pass by this one.

Kadath 03-05-2006 09:24 PM

Transporter 2 4/10

Crap. The first one was weak, but I let it go based on the fight scenes; this one has a moronic plot, warmed over fights, and Kate Nuata will not have to worry about making a second movie after that performance. Now I understand why Jason Statham's in Dungeon Siege. He was so promising in the Guy Ritchie films, too.

I'm not going to spoil the ending... But why?

Watched two Netflix DVDs last night.

Tale of Two Sisters -- 9.5/10
Wow. That's a very good movie. People who haven't seen it should.

Shaolin Soccer -- American Theatrical Version(Miramax Cut) -- 7/10
Funny, although it seems now I should have watched the original Chinese version because the US version has some stuff cut out. It was still subtitled, and I got to see the Thriller dance scene, but the ending song was the worst abortion I've ever heard in my life. Funny movie, though.

Underworld Evolution

Sequel to underworld. Dealing with Vampires and werewolves and a hybrid. I am an action film junkie and was impressed with the first movie. The sequel however does not match up to the original However overall I still enjoyed the movie and would rate it at 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

The best action movie I have seen is The long Kiss Good Night. I highly recommend this movie to any action junkie.

Gilda 03-11-2006 08:35 PM

Just saw Brokeback Mountain again today. **** our of four.

This is a much deeper movie than I'd first realized, and Ang Lee has left a lot of things for the audience to discover, or to reinforce on a second viewing. Such as:

Spoiler: Jack's parents knew he was gay and knew Ennis was his lover when he came to visit. Jack's mother accepted this, and was making a gesture of friendship by suggesting he go to Jack's room and suggesting that he visit from time to time. Jack's dad knew and resented it, which was why he refused to have the ashes scattered on Brokeback. There are a dozen scenes filled with nuances like this, unspoken dialog that fills the silences.

I'm kind of disgusted by the theme of the movie "The Hills Have Eyes". The bad guys are mutated victims from a nuclear explosion, right? I'm probably going to sound like a "pansy" or whatever, but I feel uncomfortable that people would choose to make victims of nuclear contamination seem evil in that movie..I dont know, it just seems...weird, for a reason.

TexanAvenger 03-12-2006 11:02 PM

I watched Amistad for the second time yesterday morning. It seemed like a much better movie than I remember it being the last time. It was much more powerful, and the imagery was more vivid.

Just be ready to sit down for a heavy, mostly sad, and often disturbing movie if you too would like to partake of the beautiful movie that is Amistad.

We watched Pixar's Monsters Inc. again last night. I realize it's a kids film, but it might just be a perfect one. It has so many wonderful details, the concept is clever and original, and the characters are fully realized. I think this sets the standard for modern kids films.

As I understand it, the point is that the government's neglegence caused these mutations, so it's more of a government=evil while the mutants=can't help it

It's not just that they are victims of nuclear contamination that makes them evil....they kill people...that makes them evil. It's thier choice to be evil.

They (the mutants) beleive that anyone that comes to where they live is responsible for thier mutations.

I guess I just saw it as a horror movie that spooked me and was a lot more gruesome than a lot of the other supposed Horror movies out there.

I agree, but despite how good a film it is, I still think it is inferior compared to Toy Story 1/2.

I'm currently in the middle of watching Sorority House Massacre on the Horror Channel.
It's a crappy B-movie, but one of those 'so bad it's good' movies.
A perfect example just happened:
The girls are in their underwear because they were getting ready for bed when the killer struck. They can't get their clothes cos the killer is upstairs, so they run out in the rain. But the killer is then outside, so they run back inside, and have spent the remainder of the film is their soaking wet underwear.

Though, this may just be cos I'm on my 9th beer.

Great acting & singing all around, too!

Mr. Spacemonkey 03-24-2006 10:18 PM

History of Violence:

I thought it was a really good movie. The scenes with violence were amazing, even though they were few in quantity. I didn't expect this movie to be nearly as good as it turned out to be because I believe I read some reviews—in this very thread actually—mentioning it as a disappointment. Anyway, another thing I liked about the movie was the dialogue, and not just through words. The movie also contained a lot of good themes in it as well.

Anyway, I neglect to give this movie an actual rating, such as x/10 simply because I don't want to. I'm finding it harder and harder to do with the more movies I see. So, instead, I'll just say that I recommend the movie, but keep in mind that for a movie with "Violence" in the title there is not a large quantity of it, but the quality makes up for it.

Oh, and technically this isn't the last movie I've seen, but I already gave my comments on V for Vendetta in another thread and don't feel like repeating them. :)

Great imagery, lots of depth.

<b>Primer</b> (2004)
(not to be confused with Prime, a romantic comedy)

It's a conceptual Sci-fi, about two engineers who invent a backwards running time machine in their garage. What happens next (yesterday?) is utterly original and also a bit confounding. The story unfolds for you, as it does for the characters, without any exposition and explores themes of want, power and friendship.

This film is also a masterful puzzle that doesn't easily lay out the answers. If you were confused by Memento, this is not for you. On the other hand, it's not purposely (irritatingly) confusing like Mulholland Drive. This is no acid trip, it just that paradoxes are a bitch.

Part of the enjoyment for me, was going online afterwards and reading some theories about the plot points.

10/10, with the caveat that this is a conceptual film, that won't wait for you to figure it out.

Jarhead. 7/10

I thought the movie had a great view on the war, it was a totaly different angle that was pretty neat to see. I also like Jake Gyllenhaal so thats always a bonus. The movie did get a little draggy at times near the end, but overall I enjoyed it. But if you are looking for a big shoot em up special effects movie then don't bother with this one.

Rent I love everything about this movie! I am a huge musical movie fan so it is perfect. The characters are just campy enough to be fun but not so over the top as to be unrealistic. 10/10

RoboCop 2 Not what I would consider a masterpiece but it is a really fun movie to watch with friends. I give it a 7/10.

Okay. I didn't know very much about the guy before I watched the movie, and only the stuff that you see in mid '80s pop culture. I knew about the book "In Cold Blood", but never read it.

Incredible movie. Almost everything about it was awesome. I do have to admit though, the first time V talked, all I could think was, "shit, this movie's gonna suck!"

I had a weekend movie binge recently...

The Weatherman - Pretty solid movie, I thought. Just a movie about a guy trying to get his shit together. It took some odd paths and had a few laugh out loud moments, so, I guess, it was worth the rental. ;)

A History of Violence - Like fresnelly said, the few moments of violence in the movie are spectacular, it's just the shit in between that really drags this movie down. That and Maria Bello (?). Normally I like her stuff, Viggo is an excellent actor and William Hurt's role (as brief as it was) was pretty fantastic stuff, but just not enough to make this one a great movie.

Good night and good luck - I like the period pieces. I just think this one was kind of confused. Is it about the CBS newsroom? McCarthy? Murrow? the threat of the 'Red Scare?' or the relationship between Friendly and Murrow or Murrow and Pealy? Just a whole bunch of stuff kind of slapped together with no real structure. I like that it was filmed in black and white. I like that they stayed fairly true to the words of Murrow, but the rest just seemed to be filler in between Murrow soliloquies (gosh, I hope I spelled that right...)

Derailed - An excellent movie. I knew what was going on from the get go and knew how I thought it was going to end. I was pleasantly surprised. Anniston in her knickers on the bed is almost worth the price of admission. :)

Inside Man

Finally! A suspense movie that actually takes it's time. You know, to build suspense?

The character interactions were very natural, and all of their motivations where believable and grounded. Likewise, the plot twists were never cartoonish or cheats.

Please go see this movie.

This is just a totally random thought....

I don't smoke. However, I had the weirdest urge to start smoking after watching this film.

V For Vendetta - I don't have a lot of time, so I'll just say that I liked it, but I found that the dialogue had some pretty cheesy parts. It wasn't a perfect movie, but it was nice watching it in the middle of the day, in an empty theatre on my March Break.

Speaking of smoking...

We went to see "Thank you for Smoking" on Wednesday night and I was pleasantly surprised (for some reason I thought it was going to be a documentary, a la "Super Size Me" or something). Very entertaining and well-done. I was roaring my way through most of the satire, while at the same time groaning at how accurate they were at nailing issues on the head. It also made me very glad that I didn't smoke, though after the movie I had a desire to eat/consume something that would be equally as unhealthy for me (I settled for fries).

The Squid and the Whale

Excellent portrait of a family's divorce and the relationships between the two adults and children involved.

While there's certainly some uncomfortable and cringe inducing moments, there's humour and comic absurdity too. I loved the scenes between the older son and his girlfriend. It's hard enough being a clueless teenager trying to figure out how to have a relationship. Having lousy role models as parents on top of that, is the icing on the cake.

I'm curious how a viewer who has gone through a family break-up would experience the movie. The unblinking and naturalistic tone could be very difficult to watch if you see yourself too strongly in these characters. Apparently, the film is somewhat autobiographical of the director, Noah Baumbach. I'm fortunate not to have been through the same ringer as these people, so perhaps I was able to enjoy it more from a safe perspective.

Special Features: Definitely watch the interview of Noah Baumbach by Phillip Lopate. It's very insightful and I liked what he had to say about the Brooklyn setting.

Dark Days [2000]

- A gritty documentary on the homeless living in the Amtrak subways tunnels in New York City and their struggle with day to day life.

It really reminds me that given the opportunity and means to do so, the homeless can contribute more to society and gain confidence in themselves by having a stable residence and being lifted of poverished conditions.

Definitely recommend it and does not receive as much attention as it should have, given the overall film and it was well received at sundance and other festivals when released.

A soundtrack that is entirely composed and performed by DJ Shadow is icing on the cake.

The Fog of War -- An interview with Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. Thoroughly depressing at times, especially when he's describing the firebombing campaigns on Japan in WWII. He comes off as more sympathetic here than other times, but he's still a man who helped orchestrate many, many human deaths, and it's not clear if he really regrets it, though he professes to. 7/10 -- Interesting, but a little simplistic.

Undead 10/10

If you like zombies, aliens & chicks in their undies wielding shotguns, this is the movie for you. An obvious tribute to the genius that is Dead Alive (aka Braindead).

I have a few in the last two weeks...

Ice Age 2 - 8.5/10

I actually liked it more than the first, but my wife and I both enjoyed it quite a bit. Sure, it's animated, but it's funny and quite entertaining to watch. I highly recommend it, even if you've never seen the first.

Capote - 9.5/10

Wow! There's no wonder this was an award winning movie and performance. I never expected someone could play Truman Capote so dead on. It was a fantastic movie to watch. Now I need to pick up his book, "In Cold Blood", which the writing of is the basis for the movie.

What the BLEEP Do We Know? - 7/10

It's an interesting movie. I recommend at least some fundamental udnerstnad of physics or science in general to even be mildly interested. I'm not sure how accurate all of the accounts are in it, but it surely brings quantum physics into a psuedo-sci-fi type of movie. Worth a rental if you want something different.

Tremors 3 - 6.5/10

If you like cheesy B movie flicks then check this one out. It starts out frighteningly slow, then about half way through it really picks up and just turns into a total killer. This movie has THE worst computer annimation I have ever seen in my life, so if you like cheese check it out!

imouseone 04-12-2006 07:49 PM

Inside man 6/10 - Too slow at a lot of points in the movie, I would turn and look at my girlfriend, she would look bad in boredom.

V for Vendetta 8/10 - Hugo Weaving is the man.

Gozu

Effing hilarious. I understand that this is supposed to be a horror film, but I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Disappearing dead mob bodies, yakuza-killing chihuhuas, grandmothers milking themselves, crossdressing poopers... 9.5/10, man.

Lucifer 04-15-2006 10:21 AM

Sabah 10/10. Absolutely wonderful movie. A Muslim Canadian woman, whose life has passed her by while she takes care of her mother, unexpectedly falls in love with a 100% WASP man. Cue: Culture clash!

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
9/10

If you like the Clerks/Mallrats movies then defanitly see this one. I bet ya I have seen this one 10 times and it still cracks me up every time. Tons of immature humor and swearing up the wazoo but damn its a funny movie.

Grasshopper Green 04-16-2006 03:59 PM

We just saw Thank You For Smoking. It was hilarious. I rarely laugh out loud at films, but I laughed almost the entire way through this one. It's really not about smoking as much as it is making fun of lobbying and politics. All of the acting was fantastic, but the kid annoyed me for some reason...can't put my finger on it. Hubby and I wanted to see this since we saw the first trailer for it, and it was well worth the wait...funniest movie I've seen in a long, long time. 4.5/5

Code 46

Still not quite sure what to make of this movie. Definitely intelligent. Quality cinetmatography. Interesting plot. Strange choice of actors. I'm going to give it a 7/10, I think. A Code 46 violation, by the way, is the futuristic act of procreating with someone who shares 100%, 50% or 25% of your DNA.

Walk the line - 9/10

I thought Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash was great. I could see him winning the oscar. I also thought Reese was great as well. She sounded better than the original June Carter Cash IMO.

Good Night and Good Luck - 9/10

Surprisingly good, in fact...I'm glad I finally saw this short but worthy film. George Clooney shows some moxie in his script about a few media people who did have the balls to speak up against McCarthy & his "commie pinko" campaign in the 1950s.

/an original slant on spin-doctoring/

SecretMethod70 04-17-2006 12:42 AM

Broken Flowers

Excellent movie. Similar to Lost in Translation - and with Bill Murray too - but not quite as good. Still well worth watching though. While the style is similar to Lost in Translation, the subject is very different.

Tsotsi - I can't say enough for this film.

blahblah454 04-18-2006 06:25 PM

King Kong (new one)

5/10

Total cheese. All it was was special effects and corny ass dialouge. I saw it in theaters before and thought it was decent, then just watching it again on TV and hated it.

Daoust 04-19-2006 04:47 PM

Good Night, And Good Luck

A great little film. One of the best movies I've seen in a while. I loved all the performances. I loved Strathairn's speech, at the beginning and the end of the film. I found myself cheering for Murrow throughout the film.

Clooney does a good job on the writing. He is attentive to detail, but at the same time the script is not laiden with inside, subtle, political savvy dialogue. I think someone who wrote a college paper on McCarthyism and someone who has never heard of Murrow or the Red Scare could sit down together and enjoy this film.

9/10 (One of my only 9's ever given on TFP)

I can't wait to see Tsotsi either. It's on it's way to me this week from Netflix!

Hello,

Has anyone ever been really surprised about a movie being good. I just watched A History of Violence and I guess I had real low expectations, but I was really surprised by the gore, I just didn't expect it to be like that. Worth watching

8/10

Min 04-19-2006 08:47 PM

I went on a bit of a bender:
The Passion of the Christ, without subtitles, thus, I have no impression of what was being said. I only understood the counting in Latin and Christ's comment on the cross (in Aramaic) asking why G-d had abandoned him. I kind of guessed at the part he says, 'forgive them they know not what they do'. Either way, from a purely visual standpoint, the acting and scenes are powerful. I would recommend it for the sake of being a good movie.

Nightwatch, I had subtitles for this Russian film. It was convoluted in the beginning but, it picked up enough pace and enough of my interest I have the book on pre-order for when it is published in English. I would call it a mix between Underworld (with its vampires) and Matrix (a world within a world) concept. I confess those aren't the best analogies. Just see it :)

Lastly, A Distant Sound of Thunder, an adaptation from the Bradbury short story. It really isn't that bad. Yes, the budget was cut and some of the effects are amateurish, however, the main creature is spectacular, the acting strong and the plot feasible.

None of the movies changed my life, each passed the time well, I give them all a 7/10. I'm a rough critic. If it is 10/10 for me, it's the best freakin' movie ever made.
