Anchorman

Funny enough, filled with stupid type funny, which I pretty much expect. And I've got Afternoon Delight stuck in my head. 3.5/5

Master_Shake 01-10-2005 11:42 AM

White Noise

3/10

Michael Keaton is still a very cool dude, but the movie was just so lame.

Rdr4evr 01-10-2005 11:55 AM

White Noise

Didn't realize so many people despise it so much. I thought it was decent, nothing mind blowing, but nothing all so terrible either. The ending was senseless and there was really no point to it. The parts that were supposed to be scary really werent, but those jump out at you scenes really don't usually scare me anyway. It was average, nothing horrible, nothing amazing. It would have made for an excellent TV movie.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie. -5/10

No, I didn't go alone to see it. I went with some people who probably appreciate Mr. SquarePants more so than I. They gave it an 8/10, but this is my review.

From an adult perspective, a soul-crushing and morbidly depressing way to be robbed out of $30. $12 for a coke, a bag of candy, and a small tray of dry nachos. I would have felt better tossing the money into a fireplace.

loonatic8her 01-10-2005 05:31 PM

Last movie for me was BladeTrinity... call me what you want I loved it! Wesley is a completely belivable Bad-Ass and any time we get to see Jessica Biel in something tight is always a grandios moment. Love the movie... 4 out of 5 starts.

Hotel Rwanda - 8.7/10

This is a great film. It's very intense and will keep you at the edge of your seat. The acting is very realistic (I especially enjoyed Don Cheadle's acting) and will leave you feeling as if you actually experienced it. The film sheds some light on the 1994 Rwanda genocide from a Rwandan's perspective. Highly Recommend!

magical_merlyn 01-12-2005 08:50 AM

The Village 7/10

I finally saw M. Night's latest movie on DVD. Have been impressed with his movies in the past and obviously new that there would be a twist at the end, following his standard formula of the Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. In general the Village was good however I thought that the run through the forest could have been much worse if he had chosen to flash back to the forbidden barn towards the end of the film, and maybe not even shown the identity of the 'monster' until Ivy had returned to the Village.

Overall enjoyable 7/10 stars.

RolandGilead 01-12-2005 12:51 PM

House of Flying Daggers

I was really impressed by the pictures and the fighting scenes; the ending was a bit ..well.. exaggerated.. but if you liked Hero or C.Tiger & H. Dragon don`t miss it!!

Lockjaw 01-12-2005 06:20 PM

Blade Trinity
2 on a scale of 10.

Complete idiocy.
And I'm going to go see Elektra on Friday...I'm begging for punishment I suppose.
But I plan on seeing Sideways soon so that should fix the streak.

hunnychile 01-12-2005 07:46 PM

Went to see "The Aviator" starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Cate Blanchet at the theater last weekend. I give it a positive 4 out of 5 stars. Best seen on the big screen esp. becuase of all the shots taken while flying various planes, and the lavish Hollywood scene was handled in an interesting fashion. Suprisingly, this may be Leonardo's first real edidence that he is a true actor and has matured a lot with this film. He did a fine job & the script holds several surprises. Has interesting political side bars to add some historical depth.

tuffrr 01-12-2005 09:17 PM

Saw

Give it 9/10. Best horror/thriller film i've seen ever. Was actually kinda scary which is a first for me.

Highly recommended.

pan6467 01-12-2005 11:08 PM

Rented "Anchorman-Legend of Ron Burgundy". Very overrated.

The movie is a boy meets girl, loses girl, loses dog, loses job to girl, gets all back story. It has very, very few funny moments, in fact at times it looks like the cast tries to hard to make something seem funny and in doing so just makes it worse.

I feel the movie could have been funnier if it had gone in a different direction. Perhaps, allowing the audience to truly see more of the "news" crew and develop the characters more. This movie felt almost like a sequel, where you should know the subplots like the rivalries between the other news anchors, or the news directors dysfunctional family.

Truly if the movie had focussed on the station at first and then added this as a sequel perhaps it would have been more amusing to watch. As it happens now, the movie is bogged down in trying to find a direction and trying to get you to care about characters that you have no familiarity with and refuses to truly introduce you to fully.

Overall the movie rates a 4 out of 10. IF it had been a sequel, it quite possibly could have ranked higher.

Catmandu 01-13-2005 12:27 PM

Troy.

Better than I expected. Being a Greek-myth-o-phile, I was a little put off by the story changes and the ignoring of subplots. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the end result. I hope Brad Pitt survives that course of steroids he must have taken to bulk up like he did.

fallsauce 01-14-2005 10:11 PM

I went to the video store...

I Capture the Castle: 5/10
It might be good if you haven't read the book (the rental girl said she loved it) but very disappointing if you have. Lacks magic (like Harry Potter 1&2, it's too similar to the books, but doesn't have the same charm.)

Dead Poets Society: 8/10
It's actually surprisingly not boring. There are some real personalities in this movie, it's got a real sense of bond between the boys. Robin Williams should've done more of this kind of movie instead of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Fried Green Tomatoes: 8/10
Chris O'Donnell (sp) really stole the show, and everyone else was great. The plot was kind of... pointless.

Gone With the Wind: 5/10
OMG, how can anyone stand Scarlett? I just can't like a protagonist this selfish and cold-hearted.

The Bourne identity: 6/10
Several points taken off for Marie. How does Jason put up with her? The rest of the film was pretty good, especially the beginning. It was cool seeing him use his skills for the first time.

Chingal0 01-14-2005 11:02 PM

Troy. Good movie, 3/5.

Strange Famous 01-15-2005 01:48 AM

Office Space - been meaning to watch it for ages. Liked it, resonated somewhat with my own office experiences, lots of funny lines, not too over the top, plot was pretty weak but it was more character driven, Jeny Aniston was adorable, that Lumburgh guy was hilarious. 4.5/5

Pip 01-20-2005 03:32 PM

Alexander. Stunning visuals as you would expect, and some truly nasty splatter and elephant abuse. Great dancing. It didn't grip me emotionally though for some reason. 4/5

Kadath 01-20-2005 05:06 PM

Go West, the Marx Brothers. 4/5, some good goofball antics and clever asides by Groucho, though I fastforward through any plot that doesn't involve the brothers or any music scenes.

My only problem with it is that -yes, it is his Thesis and it is pretty disgusting watching him vomit. Very scary because it is real and the data proves it. Should be shown in all jr. high schools, but it won't.

Actually, lazy-ass parents should be "required" to see this.

pinoychink790 01-20-2005 07:24 PM

Resident Evil: Apocalypse - VERY GOOD movie. It was definately better than the first. The special effects were great, the story was awsome, and the girl from the first one really kicks butt in this one. I'd give it a 10/10 and I recommend it to anyone who likes to watch zombie movies.

Ace_O_Spades 01-22-2005 12:10 AM

Garden State

10/10

Ranks in the top 5 movies I've ever seen.

There's a few lines in the movie where it says "... changed my life"

this movie changed my life.

Grasshopper Green 01-22-2005 06:10 AM

Saw Dodgeball a few days ago. It was a decent comedy, pretty cheesy, but a couple of good funny parts. 3/5

SiNai 01-22-2005 06:31 PM

So, I just saw Pretty Woman for the first time last night, grudgingly. Its.. the best "chick flick" I've ever seen. I really enjoyed this movie. Maybe its because I'm a Julia Roberts fan and didn't even know it.. the other chick flick I used to like was My Best Friend's Wedding. Pretty Woman is a great movie. 9.2

Gortexfogg 01-22-2005 08:16 PM

Super Size Me 9/10
Really interesting stuff, and quite entertaining as well. I didn't find it as gross as some people did, though. I knew fast food was bad for me, and this film may push me to the point where I might stop eating it. The part comparing heroin and ham was my favorite, definately the high point of the film.

drakers 01-22-2005 09:35 PM

Dodgeball was not anywhere near as funny as it was promoted to be and all the previews showed the funny parts. 2/5 stars.

powerclown 01-22-2005 10:30 PM

Life Aquatic - 5/10

Count me as one of those who didn't get it. I didn't like it much. I thought it was one of Murray's worst movies. The main actors seemed to think they were in some kind of revolutionary movie, that everthing they did and said was just so sublimely hilarious. Owen Wilson makes my skin crawl, Anjelica Huston slept-walk through the movie, William Dafoe was ok, Murray was dull and boring. It was a great idea to try and spoof the life and times of Jacques Cousteau (I watched his underwater wildlife series as a kid), but it wasn't funny or authentic. Painful to sit through.

FngKestrel 01-22-2005 11:02 PM

Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events.
6/10 I enjoyed the middle of the movie the most, where it was grittier and less kid like. The ending was so saccharine it made my teeth itch. It wasn't as supernatural as I had hoped, which I was expecting because of the trailer.

Hogansgoat hated the movie. I'm guessing he felt it was bad enough to deserve some sort of penance for dragging him to the movie, because he farted continuously in the theatre and the car ride and while chilling at my house after the movie. If you know Hogansgoat, then you know what that means.

Manuel Hong 01-23-2005 08:38 PM

"Gangs of New York" Reminded me of one of my favorite novels Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. Saw the ceiling of Grand Central Station last week which also helped. Anyone else read it?

Stompy 01-25-2005 10:49 AM

Collateral - Nothing very original. Taxi guy gets "kidnapped" and is forced to make rounds w/ a hitman. Nothing special. Wasn't horrible, but... there really wasn't a point to any of it.

For as non-fictional as this tried to be, there was simply too many "yeah.. right" parts (you know.. "oh, wow, what a coincidence. Right place at the right time.")

Spoiler: Sorry, but if you flip a car going 60/70 miles per hour, you aren't gonna fuckin live and just up & walk away.. especially without a seat belt - I don't care who ya are. Not to mention the "gee, had you not shot that guy and waited JUST ONE SECOND I would've been dead." Horrible.

Not much action, very simple story. 2.5/5

01-25-2005 12:10 PM

Just saw White Noise. It was decent, not too scary really. Until the last 10-15 minutes - They sucked more than I can possibly describe. Kinda ruined the movie, actually.

But I love Batman, so 7/10

hunnychile 01-25-2005 05:49 PM

Julia Roberts is SO overated. And those fake lips she now sports are butt ugly. Pretty Woman was her last decent flick IMHO. She's never been a great actress, either BTW.

Kadath 01-26-2005 05:30 AM

Finally watched The Village last night.

I'm a big fan of Shyamalan's films, and I'm usually no good at figuring out plot twists, but this one was a big disappointment. I spotted the two twists ahead of time, and the characters were unenagaging. The one thing I will say is that the design on those we do not speak of was superb. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. Bottom line: 2/5. I hope his next one is better, as the last two have been disappointing

You know whats funny? I actually thought the exact opposite about this movie. I loved everything about it but thought those we dont speak of were just silly looking. Strange....

kids

harmony korine wrote it. i am not sure what to make of him.
interesting film--i really did not enjoy hanging out with the collection of young sociopaths that wandered in and out of the film--which means, i suppose, that it is a good film, for what it is doing. interesting hallucinatory sequences in a nightclub, however.

Good movie but not as good as I thought it'd be. Maybe I need to watch it again to really appreciate it. For now.. 8/10.

"The Last Temptation of Christ" - 6/10

Pretty weak for a Scorsese flick. Willem DeFoe was really good, but what was up with casting Harvey Keitel as Judas? He was like a young Mel Brooks or something. Very strange. Overall, a disappointment.

Kadath 01-30-2005 05:13 PM

Garden State 9/10

That was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Zack Graff is either incredibly talented or he just dumped all his skill in one shot. Natalie Portman is a REALLY good actor, and I never really thought about it, but she's very affecting in several movies I really enjoy, such as The Professional, Heat, Beautiful Girls, this...

Clockwork Orange 8/10 I love Kubrick and this is one messed up movie.

oktjabr 02-03-2005 01:14 PM

A Very Long Engagement.

Although the plot was a bit cliched, I still have to love how Jeunet visualizes things. The contrast between wartorn trenches and softly yellow french countryside was astounding. The movie is probably a school example of a proper way of using computer generated special effects.

8 / 10.

Kostya 02-06-2005 04:44 AM

Twilight Samurai.

Wow! After a long and disappointing summer at the cinemas, with a few notable standouts and a lot of dross, this was definitely one of the defining films of the season for me. A truly profound cinematic experience, I found myself deeply moved while I was viewing it, and for some time after.

Kadath 02-06-2005 08:27 AM

They Live - 7/10

Man, Roddy Piper cannot act. But since he spends the first half of the movie with his mouth shut, and Keith David is a decent actor (and one of my favorites), I can let that bit go. And money that says "This is your God" goes a long way. A fine film.

agreed on all counts... i can't believe i would like a movie with piper in it as much as i like this flick. quality stuff, and even though piper can't act, you gotta love the line from the bank about being there to chew bubble gum and kick ass. oh, and the fight that just won't end.

Boogyman

6.5/10 Plenty scary when it comes to quiet moments followed by extremely loud scary sounds and other common horror effects. The story was decent but I felt the use of these horror effects were pretty lame. Every time you think you might be scared (IE a guy slowly opens a door and a cat jumps in his face style...), sure enough, the volume gets jacked up and something shocking happens. Beyond this though, I enjoyed the acting and was entertained.

Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy

9.2/10 Still one of my favorites :)

Locke7 02-07-2005 06:51 AM

Nothing spectacular, boring at times. Story was just OK. Zach Braff should stick with scrubs, he is spectacular in that. Film making might not be his thing...

Love Actually. I've meant to watch this one for a while and last night I finally did. I knew it'd be good and it was great. It's nice every now and then to watch a movie that just makes you feel good, and this is one of those films. Great script, great actors, funny and very romantic. Not your typical romantic comedy, but a wonderful and original one. 10/10.

Dummy, starring Adrien Brody and Milla Jovovich. Made in 2002.

I had never heard anything about this movie but I saw it was listed under comedies while I was looking for something to watch. The movie wasn't great... but it was pretty well done. The way the film was shot led me to think it was a movie from back in the mid/early 90's but I actually think that was just the look they were aiming for. Certainly worth a look if you see that its on.

Friday Night Lights - good film. I don't normally get too hung up on sports films, but this was so compelling that by the end I was praying for the Panthers to win. 9/10

incidentally, I was on a plane, and the second movie that was shown was

Scarface: Shame of a Nation (1931)

Sweet movie. I totally love the 30's gangster films and this one especially, though Little Caesar and Public Enemy No. 1 are also consumate examples. Paul Muni is just perfect in his role for the film, ambitious, violent, charismatic and ultimately destestable. The film essentially wrote the schema for gangster films and remains the touchstone of almost every subsequent film in the genre, only the Godfather could be argued to be more important.
Great great entertainment too!

trache 02-21-2005 10:15 PM

I saw Constantine on opening night.

It was very well done, although I wish it would have been more like "Seven" with some very graphic imagery. I mean, you could go far out with that type of thing.

It's your classic good vs evil story brought to life from the Hellblazer comic book, but from a religious perspective.

For those of you who do watch it in theatres, pay special attention to the dialogue. I had a tough time trying to hear what was said due to the average volume of the cast's voices -- at times the most I could hear was a whisper. Let's not forget different languages, eg. Latin.

There were often a few names that didn't quite enter my conciousness at the right moments so I was often lost for a moment or two. Also the story goes quite quickly so don't lose anything.

The computer effects were pretty awesome. Overall I think they did a good job.

2.75/4 stars.

Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" - 7.5/10

"Lionel, a Mama's boy has the unwanted honor of having to look after his overbearingly evil mother. He ends up falling in love with a local woman who believes that they're destined together. In a moment of intentional sabotage of one of their dates, his mother is bitten by a mysterious creature that ends up zombifying her. It's only a matter of time before she rises from the dead a powerful, bloodthirsty zombie. It's only a matter of time before she starts infecting residents of the town and Lionel has to stop her...and them."

Started out kind of slow, but as the zombie infestation grows, so do the laughs and the hilarious (and inventive) special effects.

A poor excuse for a film. Wil Ferrel is either loosing his touch or his picking awful scripts. It was hard for me not to fall asleep during this flick.

Will actually co-wrote the script with friend and fellow SNL alum, Adam McKay (head writer for much of Will's stint on the show and personally wrote a lot of Will's sketches). This movie has comedy that's definitely an aqcuired taste, and by that, I mean you have to be at least slightly demented. But, Will Ferrell has said that this movie is the first time he's actually gotten to do his brand of humor and comedy and not be held back by censors (SNL) or the scripts/direction of others. Personally, I loved Anchorman as it possesses exactly the same silly, absurd, irreverent, almost insane humor that I like to think I also have.

As for my latest movie, I finally got around to seeing Big Fish. I absolutely loved the movie and thought Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney gave incredibly charming performances. And with all the surreal elements of the movie, I understood the descriptions of it being a modern-day Wizard of Oz. It was just visually engaging, and I loved how the story unfolded. The ending was a bit cheesy, but since the entire movie made me feel like a little kid again, I didn't mind at all.

All in all, I thought it was a wonderful movie that I'm very glad I bought despite not having seen it before. After watching it, I'm completely perplexed as to how this movie didn't get more recognition in the awards circuit, and was only nominated for Best Score--which was fantastic, by the way--by the Academy Awards. Then again, this is the same Academy that completely snubbed Eternal Sunshine this year, so there should be no surprise.

Lastly, Tim Burton is awesome.

9/10 (minor points docked for subjecting me to the sight of Danny DeVito's naked ass)

SuperSize Me - 8/10

Finally got around to seeing it, and it was good and funny. Important to take it with a grain of salt, and I was both horrified and highly amused by the gastric bypass footage, but it definitely made me want to eat better and exercise more, and any film that does that must be pretty good.

just saw Wimbeldon this weekend. it sucked. if there ever was a movie to give examples of what cliche's are, this movie is it. nothing new in it at all. 2/5 stars.

i also saw Hitch, which i was kind of forced into seeing. and it actually was really good. it's kind of funny, because i saw Wimbeldon earlier in the day, and then i saw Hitch. both are romantic movies, and while the first one was a cliche in a box, the second one was completely new and refreshing. 4/5 stars.

The Boys From Brazil (1978) - 7.5/10
Starring Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, James Mason, & Steve Guttenberg

"Barry Kohler, a young Nazi hunter, tracks down a group of SS officers meeting in Paraguay in the late 1970s. The Nazis, led my Dr Mengele, are planning something. Old Nazi hunter, Ezra Lieberman, is at first uninterested in Kohler's findings. But when he is told something of their plan, he is eager to find out more. Lieberman visits several homes around Europe in order to uncover the Nazi plot. It is at one of these houses he notices something strange, which turns out to be a horrible discovery."

Pretty good. Although very dated visually, the plot is a bit ahead of its time.

The Motorcycle Diaries, 9.5/10. It follows Ernesto 'Che' Guevara de la Serna (a student who was 1 semester away from becoming a doctor, mainly focused on Leprosy, played by Gael García Bernal) and his friend Alberto Granado (a biochemist, played by Rodrigo de la Serna) throughout their travels through South America, but during their travels Ernesto starts to notice all of the atrocities done onto the South American people by the corrupt governments and the wealthy, and then you start to notice how he becomes 'Che', the revolutionary.

The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles, so if you don't like to read, you probably won't enjoy the movie.

The Return **** (out of four)

This is a great movie. It begins on a tower at the end of a causeway, where a group of boys are challenging each other to jump off into the water. One boy, the youngest, is too afraid to jump. He returns with his mother that night and is comforted. The next day, his father returns, after a 12 year absense, and they go on a road trip together, along with his older brother. The father has some business to conduct, and may be a criminal. The father is determined to teach his boys how to be men, but his long absense has left them untrustful of him, and his attempts to toughen them up come off not so much as learning experiences as borderline abuse.

He has a meeting with some men, and they may be covering up evidence of a crime; it's hard to tell. The meat of the movie occurs in the last part. The two boys and the ir father row to an island far from shore, where they camp out for several days. The father needs to retrieve something, and seems to want to spend time with his sons. There will be another test involving a tower, and scenes of amazing power.

This is a beautifully photographed movie. The landscapes are all bare and austere, the colors washed out to give everything an old, worn out look. Everything seems sad, as if it's the natural condition of the setting, which infects all of the people who live there.

It's a sneaky movie. It seems to be rambling and going nowhere until near the end, when a few seens of amazing power draw everything together. It's a character driven movie, so those who are into action, complex plotting, or broad humor best stay away.

alien vs Predator. 6 out of 10

B Movie. I enjoyed the backstory, and the effects, but man was it predictable. we knew which characters had the red-shirts (a la Start Trek) and were going to die.

And By the Way: if you were in Antartica, wouldn't you be able to see your breath when you breathed or spoke???

Hero with Jet Li

Lovely cinematography and clever use of colours. Amazing fantastical fight scenes, if you find them absurd then I completly understand. 9/10

Some reasonable acting, Jet Li of course not counted here as he can't act. 7/10

Plot - I don't want to give the game away but I felt that it substantially undermined the rest of the film. SPOILER-> At periods it was revealed that the past was being incorrectly recounted and it was then retold differently. This happened several times and I found myself, in the end, not believing anything I was seeing or waiting to have the rug ripped out from under me again. In a film where they also ask you to accept totally unphysical stunts I felt that the bedrock of acceptance was being undermined. 2/10

Conclusion: great visuals, boring music, mediocre acting and bad plot. Unsatisfying unless high kicks are all you need for amusement.
