Words cannot describe it. Just go see for yourself.

Joyeux Noel --
about the WW1 spontaneous ceasefire on Christmas Eve. What a great movie, it gave a very human face to the War.

Dark Water --Japanese version
I was so distracted by the subserviant behaviour of the main character (female) that it ruined the entire film for me. I found that more horrifying than the dead kid trying to kill her.

Stranger Than Fiction (10/10)

This was a truly great movie. It was funny and moving. The acting and directing were perfect. My wife and I both loved it. Anything else could be considered a spoiler because part of the fun of this movie is the way it slowly reveals its nature.

Spoiler: It was mysterious but at the same time it was set in the middle of normal workdays and normal life issues. It was nothing at all like Office Space or an obscure French movie, though a story outline might make you think so. It was funny and romantic. It was sexy without nudity & action-packed with little on-screen violence. The characters seemed real but heroic; I don't think I will ever forget them. The mythological and cultural references were surprising and often humorous. The ending was exactly what it should be. Stranger Than Fiction had something worthwhile to say and said it well,

and it made me laugh my ass off in the process. I highly recommend going to see it on a date.

The Fountain: 10/10

This movie is what film making is for. Darren Aronofsky delivers an outstandingly poetic and intriguingly thought provoking story that deals with mankind's obsession with immortality. Some thought it was too fragmented, but I thought Aronofsky tied the movie's intricate plot together very well, and with amazing imagery. The cinematography alone was enough to watch this movie a few more times. I highly recommend it.

Stranger Than Fiction 8/10

I liked this movie but my date didn't.
Don't go to see this movie if you want to see a Will Farrel movie. you will probably be disappointed. Go see this movie because it is a pretty good movie.
I wont get into any spoilers but this seems to be a well thought out original story, I cant recall seeing anything similar and that in its self is a good enough reason to see it. The acting was good the chosen actors were good too.
I really liked the story line. it made you like the characters and care for them long before the end of the movie. As for the ending...it was good, I like how it was written, but.....This is one movie where I hope alternate endings are included on the DVD version. it is also one witch could easily accommodate alternate endings.

The Descent
this was a GREAT movie about 6girls that go out exploring caves for fun but end up in more trouble than expected. it's probably the best horror movie i saw in a few years. made my gf really scared! and it's not the typical american horror. i think this one was made in england.

I've been meaning to see this one, because it seems (from the trailer) to give you that feeling of claustrophobia, or general paranoia that's there when you're in a dark, moist cave. I'll probably rent it.

I think he scored big with this one. No mean feat capturing the darker side of Boston. 8/10

Just finished watching The Death Of Mr Lazerescu... Great drama, very upsetting. 8.5/10

Telluride 12-03-2006 09:52 PM

The last two movies I watched:

Donnie Darko: 8/10 - I was surprised by how good this movie actually was. I was expecting some teen-drama crap about a crazy high schooler. Instead I got a movie about time travel and alternate realities.

Spirited Away: 6/10 - This movie was decent. I frequently like anime, but this movie just didn't do anything special for me.

"Three...Extremes"
A collection of three short films from China, Korea, and Japan. I typically think that China "The Eye" and Japan "Ju-On" produce some of the best horror flicks I've seen. Of course, like a great home run hitter, one cannot hit home runs without striking out an awful lot. "Three...Extremes" was one of those strikeouts, I think.

It was as if they had studied Tales From the Crypt but forgot the tongue-in-cheek aspect of it.

"Brat" (English title, "Brother"). Russian film from 1997. This film was excellent. Although the story can be hard to follow at times, it is still an excellently detailed plot.

The movie follows a man stright out of his mandatory military service, who goes to St. Petersburg to see his brother and start a new life, but through deception of his brother he ends up becoming a hitman.

This movie is difficult to find in the US, but if you can find it, I recommend you watch it. It is in russian with about about 7 language options for subtitles (including english).

little_tippler 12-04-2006 05:20 AM

"Manuale d'Amore"

7/10 - a recent Italian movie that is a simple but enjoyable sketch on the several stages of love and relationships. A little clichéd but I laughed out loud a couple of times watching it. What in Portugal is called a tragicomedy. Sad but true portrait of love and its hardships and of the frailty of the human will.

V for Vendetta:
I've seen this two or three times and I can't decide if it is just an awesome ride or if there is some deeper meaning to it. Either way, Hugo Weaving is a great orator and it shows. Even if it doesn't mean anything, it does a great job of it.

I just couldn't get into this one. This is one of those movies that you either love, or you hate. All 3 people I saw it with (and half the theatre) walked out of the theater upset they paid to see this movie.

I agree 100%. I saw this movie myself for the first time a few days ago. Didnt want to because I felt the previews looked cheesy. Hugo Weaving is simply sensational! he adds something to this movie that I cant describe. This role has shot this man with nuclear intensity straight into my favorite actors category.

I just saw "Happy Feet". It sucked, there was no plot, it was a tired formula flick that was poorly done --it was insulting and if you're thinking of bringing your kids to see it, don't. They're smarter than this film. We walked out. 2/10 (visually very nice).

Apocalypto

I think I'm done trying to give Mel Gibson another shot. In my opinion, he shoulda stopped after Braveheart. This was so disappointing. Yes, there was gratuitious violence, which I enjoy. And, yes, there is historical significance to the story. But give it a rest already. The scenery is great, makeup great, etc. I'm still trying to figure out the point of making this movie. 5/10 and it only gets that much because Mel has a knack for inserting violence right when I'm about to nod off.

keyshawn 12-10-2006 04:14 PM

Do the right thing -
Very solid movie. Shows some great dialogue [especially between the few guys sitting on the sidewalk in the lawn chairs drinking]; I enjoyed the character (the old 'drunk' man, I forget his name) in particular - he was witty and I was sympathetic to him. The ending did seem a bit 'preachy' per se, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
8.5/10

Borat
- Maybe I had too high expectations or too the film too seriously, but I felt it wasn't comedic. A couple humorous moments were there with the brown bear and the car dealership, but that was about it.
4/10

Lucky Number Slevin -

The way this movie turned out vs how the previews showed it to be was beyond satisfying.

I love a movie that just throws a huge twist in the end and have it all still make perfect sense!

So the last few bond movies flat out sucked, I went into this one expected a half-decent Roger Moore style quality bond. But damn was I shocked when the movie got rolling. Daniel Craig is the new Bond ladies & gents, no doubt about it.

No longer does our friend Mr.Bond rely on his savy voice and extreme gadgets.

Bond finally has some style again.

V for Vendetta 11/10
I finally got around to watching V for Vendetta I had always wanted to see it but never did. Now I wish I had been able to see it in the theater. I thought it was very well done. well thought out well acted the cast seemed perfect.
I don't own many movies, I don't even rent movies often but I think I may need to go buy this one.

mandy 12-14-2006 06:40 AM

watched saw3 the other day and it wasn't as good as the first two. a few new good twists though. many "ah-ha" moments and some "oh my goodness" moments. i'd give it a 7 for plot and story line and new twists.

Mister Coaster 12-16-2006 06:30 AM

So we have this big new fancy HDTV and HD on demand. I noticed FARGO was available for free, so I watched it again last night. It had been a few years since I'd seen that move and HOLY CRAP! This is without a doubt one of the top 5 movies of all time.

Much like many "classics" from way back when, this film has NO special effects, NO explosions, NO hunky leading man or hottie showboating her cleavage, NO CGI, NO cast of thousands.... none of that stuff that typically gets the "wow factor" these days.

This film has ACTORS, playing roles to perfection. It has DIALOGUE that keeps you begging for more. There is not one second that was put in that didn't belong. The mucical score is absolutely haunting, I literally would get chills when that violin theme would play. I simply cannot say enough good things about this movie. The Coen brothers just rule, and this is their crown jewel. I can't beleive it didn't win the Oscar for best picture.

If you havent seen Fargo, stop what you are doing, RIGHT NOW, and go rent it. If it has been a while since you have seen it, go watch it again tonight.

So, yeah... 10 out of 10 for me, duh.

MexicanOnABike 12-17-2006 08:14 PM

o k ... i haven't posted in a couple of weeks so heres the latest movies i've seen. the bad then the good.

pirates of the caribbean 2: Dead man's Chest
eh. i saw the 1st one and it was good with a good ending. the sequel however just seemed long and it felt like a bad sequel. It wasn't as funny as the 1st one, the story was stretched over 2hrs30min, and the acting could have been better. i didn't feel for any character so if they died i couldn't care.
5/10

Superman returns
I had the same reaction as many ppl from the "i hated the new superman" thread. it was allright but i would never watch it again. this wasn't as good as i expected. i thought for sure there would be some kickass action and something to stop superman apart from the usual kryptonite. the acting was just tv quality. rent it if you must but don't expect a masterpiece.
6/10

The Crow
i heard only good things from this movie from a few friends and reviews and after finishing it, i was SUPER dissappointed! wow. this felt like an amateur movie! i guess i'm just not goth or emo enough to get this movie...
4/10

Little Miss Sunshine
This was a suprisingly good movie! i checked it out this weekend - it was well done and the acting was great. felt nice to see a movie without special effects or anything CG. and it's also a bit funny. i recommend it for ppl who like good acting in the drama/comedy genre. although the ending was a bit weak... i wished there was more.
8.5/10

The Lake House
I saw this with my gf and i think i liked it more than she did! haha. for once, the romantic movie does something i like. "time travel". if you've seen the previews you'll know what i'm talking about. although some parts could have been better, like the acting and some scenes, it was still a good chickflick with a good story line.

Somebody told me that The Lakehouse was a remake from an asian(possibly Korean, I'm not sure) movie.
I know for sure that The Departed was based on an Asian move (Infernal Affairs), and I want to see it before I see Scorcese's remake.

Utterly dull. I am tired of seeing Vince Vaughn play himself.

it doesn't get funnier than the preview.

Halx 12-18-2006 06:09 PM

The Departed - 8/10

Leonardo DiCaprio is probably the best actor in the industry. Matt Damon is probably the worst. Jack Nicholson gets away with just acting the same way in every role he plays. Marky Mark and Alec Baldwin are the best characters (aside from Leo) and they get some of the best lines.

The movie itself is satisfying. No excuses given... it shows you exactly what you expect out of it. Then it gives you a little more than you bargained for.

MexicanOnABike 12-19-2006 12:09 AM

Click
predictable!! wow. This was a bad movie! all the jokes revolve around farts, hitting or getting hit and a few sex jokes. lame. I think Adam Sandler should stop making movies right now because they're always the same. This COULD have been a good story but it fell for the old predictable lame " falls asleep, wake up and do awesome story and then wake up again and notice it was all a dream and now my life is changed" story. it's a good example of what bad writers do when they can't find an ending. "oh i know! let's make him wake up and it was all a dream! that will be a good twist!" bleh. sorry for the spoilers but i don't want you wasting your money on this.
3/10 just because the remote was cool and Kate Beckinsale was in it.

biznatch 12-19-2006 06:29 AM

I had a strong suspicion just from the previews that Click would suck, and now I know I definitely don't want to see it. Still some people I know liked it, but I don't think it's my kind of movie.

Kadath 12-19-2006 09:48 AM

On the subject of Adam Sandler: I don't write him off completely because of Punch-Drunk Love and (to a lesser extent) Spanglish. I think the bottom line is he can be in intelligent movies but he's always going to make his money doing sophmoric garbage and that's fine.

biznatch 12-19-2006 12:01 PM

I saw Clerks II.
I liked it a lot, very funny movie. Everyone who's a fan of that series of movies (with Jay and Silent Bob) should see it. 9/10

Actually, you're not really ruining anything there because anyone who watches the movie is going to be able to predict it from the get go. I saw Click, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't hold its predictability against it because it wasn't trying to be unpredictable. It's not that kind of a movie at all. The end (him waking up) was not the important part of the ending at all.

Also, that's funny that you mention that about the jokes because I thought the best part of the movie was Terry Crews singing Working for the Weekend. I mean, the man has an amazing voice. I was personally pissed when Sandler muted him. Strangely enough, that wasn't a fart, hitting or getting hit, or sex joke.

i know the wake up was not the important part but it's a crappy way of doing it. I personally hate those types of movies and it seems cheap. and over all the bad in the movie, I forgot about that part "working for the weekend." that was a funny part for sure!! ... so 3.5/10 instead.

Oh, trust me, I agree. I normally hate those types of movies too. My friend and I were having a discussion about it and I pointed out just how much I hate when movies do it. But I decided to let it slide if it's really not trying to hide anything. Kind of like the classic The Wizard of Oz (though I guess that's different being a classic). It only bothers me when I'm suppose to be watching clever movies that I know are going to involve a twist ... such as: Spoiler: Mulholland Drive.

Just finished watching Wal-Mart The High Cost of Low Price. It's a documentary so it is biased, but man, if 10% of what they say is true, Wal-Mart is evil. It was very shocking to see that some of the richest people in America have the most workers below the poverty level. Definitely worthy of the Netflix queue.

Jet Li - Fearless
10/10 (if you're a fan of kung fu movies) - the best Jet Li film ever (and his last). It's the old Wushu style kung-fu movie. Every fight is fabulously choreographed.

The story is more deeply philosophic about a spiritual journey acted and directed with immense sincerity. By "sincerity" I mean that the story isn't just an excuse to string together various fights - it's Jet Li's personal statement about martial arts, violence and making peace. Never has Jet Li played such a flawed, sympathetic and ultimately heroic character. I won't spoil it for you but there were moments in the film that made me cry.

This film has it all .... if you're a fan of kung fu movies.

If you're not a fan of kung fu movies it'd probably be more like 7/10 - because the cinematography is on par with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and it's just a good story. But Fearless has a little more depth.

Mister Coaster 12-23-2006 07:42 AM

^^ Is that REALLY going to be Jet Li's last kung fu movie? Or is that just hype? I have always wanted to see a live-action Dragonball-Z movie made, and Jet Li is taylor made to play Vegeta.

I'd like to see Christopher Walken in the role of Vegeta. He'd bring an odd depth to the character. I mean all of his superpowered movements would be CGI anyway, so why not go all out?

the hired hand

what a beautiful film: peter fonda starred and directed this after easy rider.
the cinematography, the acting and (especially) the music are all lovely--very sad, quite slow, just lovely. if you can get ahold of the dvd, watch this film.

The Pursuit Of Happyness: 9/10

I loved this movie. I didn't know about watching a Will Smith flick, but he really did a good job. I can't say enough about his kid either, he was amazing. Great acting all around, a good story that made my eyes well up a couple times, a couple funny parts thrown in there... all around, just a really good movie.

Daoust 12-25-2006 10:05 AM

Thank You For Smoking was in my opinion just a fair movie. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I thought the idea was brilliant, and the script was pretty good, but there was just something kind of predictable about it. I guess I didn't like the 'grinch has his heart grow three sizes by the end of the movie' thing. I mean, I knew it made sense, but I guess I was looking for something a little less transparent.

Beyond The Gates Of Splendor is a documentary that I challenge all TFP'ers to pick up, if they happen to see it on their store shelf. It's about 5 missionary couples who go to Ecuador in the 1950's into the jungles to a tribal community and how they interact with them. It is a great film, not preachy at all, with a great message.

Finally got around to seeing this and wow what a total let down. You're totally right about not caring about the characters at all. This really felt like one of those sequels where the movie company had a mega-hit and went "Holy Crap! We gotta do a sequel while the product is hot!" and just threw a bunch of crap together.

LOL, the summer this movie came to our little town my friends and I saw it no less than 8 times in our little pissant local theater. I don't think I've seen it since then.

Enjoyable, affecting film. I really ought to give Le Carre a shot; I always thought his novels were fluff.

"The Holiday" 9/10

It is a little slow in the beginning but totally hits its stride towards the end. I keep telling myself that I don't need to see it in the theater again, that I can wait till it comes out on DVD or to the ghetto theater at the very least.

I had forgotten I wanted to watch this one until it was referred to in another thread. So I promptly acquired a copy for my viewing pleasure.
I loved the characters and the story line, it is a great movie for the entire family. the writers did an excellent job of tieing several plot lines together and making them overlap. The animation was not the best, but in no way did it detract from the overall experience.
Watch it today!

Movies I've seen lately...

Concert for Bangladesh - 10/10
Maybe not the best concert film ever, but certainly one of the most significant concerts ever put down on film.

The line-up for the band:
George Harrison
Leon Russell
Eric Clapton
Billy Preston
Ringo Starr
Klaus Voormann
Jim Keltner
Jesse Ed Davis
and many others

Opening set by Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan

And Bob Dylan does a remarkable walk-on set. One of his best performances on film that I've seen.

This is a great concert film if you're into the good music of that era. I intend to buy myself a copy.

V for Vendetta 8.5/10
I bought this film for my daughter for Christmas because she is a huge Hugo Weaving fan. Neither of had seen it but it was only a small disappointment that you never see his face in the film, lol. I found it to be enjoyable with, of course, an eerily relevant plot. The choice of John Hurt to play the role of the fear-mongering chancellor in this rather Orwellian drama I thought was a neat little *nudge, nudge, wink, wink* for the fans of the film version of Orwell's 1984. The movie has some flaws - stilted moments, plot holes, etc. - but overall we both liked it very much.

Okay, last night....

The Descent 10/10
I LOVED this film. But I NEVER want to see it again, lol. Probably the best horror movie to be made in...I don't know, I can't even say. I can't remember the last time I saw a horror film that used suspense (excruciating suspense) and DARKNESS to better effect. Normally I would find all of the jarring cuts of the action scenes to be annoying, but they worked perfectly in this case to convey the sense of disorientation you would have in that situation - Spoiler: being in a dark, enclosed place under attack by unknown, slimy white, blind, wall-crawling, cannibalistic humanoids. *shiver* It seems to take a long time for the action to build up, but when it does it is non-stop - just be patient and soak up the atmosphere. I also commend this film for its sincere attempt to establish solid characterizations with conflicts and motives - unusually so for a horror flick - but at the same time, not being overbearing with it. And finally, the performances by the all female cast are rock solid and if you're a woman you might take more than a little satisfaction from watching these chicks throw down with the "bad guys" and kick a good deal of Spoiler: slimy white ass :p - there is no cowering in the corner waiting for a guy to come and save them. It was kind of exhilarating. :)

I could go on more about this flick, but that's probably enough, lol. I recommend it highly for those who like horror films and are not squeamish - it is quite gory. The version I got from Netflix is an unrated version so I'm not sure how it compares to the theatrical version. Also, from what I understand, the ending in this version is different from the US theatrical release.

Kinsey - 8/10

Being the sexuality enthusiast that I am, there's no way I could have approached this movie with anything less than a deep, vested interest. So, I watched what I would consider to be a boring movie to anyone else with unwavering attention. The movie illustrates the worth of education. Anyone who knows what the TFP is about will also appreciate it. I was deeply satisfied with how the importance of Kinsey's work came across and wasn't too bothered with the flimsy extra relationships that the movie depicts.

The movie gets points for boobs, vaginas and penises.

I'd just like to say that the only way we are going to advance as a society is to discuss things openly. This movie is about a man who saw that and fought for that in a time when nobody wanted to acknowledge anything. Times are still much like that, but we have made strides and I think we owe a lot of that to Dr Kinsey. The TFP is here to continue that progress.

Eragon 7/10

The cgi was superb, the acting was good and it was a cute movie over all. I havent read the book though so perhaps I am not as biased as most.

Last night I watched "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

It's an old Spaghetti Western type with Clint Eastwood. Before last week I probably haven't watched 8-10 westerns in my life. Don't ask me why I've been on a kick this week, but I've watched 3-4 back to back. :o

It was fairly decent, I'd say 6 or 7 out of 10. :)

I agree. We saw it at the theater over the summer. It wasn't that we thought it would be good, I just saw it advertised everyday while waiting for the train and when JJ asked what movie, it came to mind. But it was the best suspense/horror movie I've seen in a very long time. I screamed and had everyone around us laughing...good tension breaker. :) The plot was good and the characters even better. I was concerned with them all being women...a boob fest, woe is me...but it wasn't. This movie should be seen by all who like horror/suspense movies.

Casino Royale: 3/10

The explosions and first ten minutes were cool, and one of the ladies was pretty hot. Otherwise, the film was boring and predictable. I'll never go see another Bond flick again.

Glory's Sun 01-03-2007 05:33 AM

I watched two back to back..

The Black Dahlia: 3/10-- too long and drawn out, some basic cinematic errors, but .. scarlett johannson.. yummy.

Shortbus: 8/10 -- great flick. warning to anyone who is afraid of hetero/homosexual scenes/orgies.

Clerks 2
After seeing the 1st movie, i thought this could be a worthy sequel but after seeing it, it just didnt feel like the same movie. I mean it could be called anything else and besides the 2 guys being the same, it's just a random movie.
I do not recommend it unless you're the type who wants to see all the kevin smith movies.

Children of Men: 10/10

This is the best real science fiction movie in the past 20 years. As one who grew up reading Clark, Asimov, Bradburry, and Herbert, I found this movie to not only be deeply moving but also tremendously nostalgic. I was instantly brought back to reading the stories that challenged reality's bounds, inspiring my imagination and effecting my very personality for my entire life. Children of Men is a profoundly dramatic, character driven epic of the journey of a man from a place of deep nothingness and sadness to a place of peace, and how it intertwines with a socio-politcal, bio-technological, and...I'm sorry, I just have to say that the kettle corn was really crappy....psychological realms of our existence. I don't want to give anything away, but I do have to say that this movie is not for the faint of heart. If you can't sit through movies like Saving Private Ryan, this may not be for you. Be prepared to be affected greatly.

This is a must see.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend

I thought the idea sounded good. Poor acting and script ruined it for me. Anna Faris looked yummy though, so I gave it 5/10.

Talledega Nights

John C Reilly was really the only decent thing in this movie. Not funny at all.

<b>Pulse</b>

 1/10

Incredibly boring, poor cinematography, poor acting, horrible "special" effects.

The japanese version was wayyy better.

I saw the new Omen the other night. Very weak and not even scary.

Grasshopper Green 01-04-2007 05:31 PM

The Pursuit of Happyness:
4/5. The beginning was sort of boring, I think the second half was much better. I don't know how close it really was to the main characters real life experiences, but hubby and I both left feeling very ungrateful for the things that we have. Will Smith does a good job, and so does his son. A great feel-good movie.

Blood Diamond:
4/5. For the most part, I loved this movie. It got mixed reviews, but I thought all the acting was great and the story was good too. The "message" about dirty diamonds was a little overwhelming sometimes, otherwise a great movie.

Pan's Labyrinth

This is a really hard movie to rate. Its a spanish language film about a girl, Ofelia, who dreams up a fantasy while coping with living at the front of the Spanish civil war with her step father, who is El Capitan. Ofelia meets a faun who tells her that she is an immortal princess, but that she must complete 3 tasks to prove that she is pure enough to join her kingdom.

At first, you don't really buy it. The CG isn't as seamless as it can be by today's standards and the acting by the faun is on par with spanish soap operas. Then, something happens between the first and second tasks and it just clicks. You get sucked into the movie and the CG is no longer an issue.

There are 2 subplots running concurrently with the main plot, which means that there is not one wasted scene in the whole movie. Its got highly graphic gore that will make anyone cringe, along with some great acting by the main actors.

I cant give this movie a number. At the end, I couldn't bring myself to say, "What a great movie," even though I certainly was pleased. It was worth the high price of admission, though. There's certainly a lot of bang for your buck.

The critics call it an "Adult Fairy Tale" and I can agree with that. However, its not a date movie unless your partner loves violence and gore (like mine!).

Eragon
9/10
I actually thought this movie was really suprisingly good. My dad asked me to go see it with it, so I agreed to spend quality movie time together. Movie was clean in content, good special effects, plus it has Rachel Weiz as the voice for the dragon...I totally love her.

Black Christmas
-10/10
I wanted to see this because I was curious...well my friends and I were bored so we went. This is the movie you see them making fun of in Mystery Science Theater 3000...so bad. It is full of sorority girls...and then some unloved weird kid who was shoved into the attic who then wants revenge and stabs everyone in the eyes. Yea..enough said. I walked out of that movie wanting two hours of my life back. Not to say I was expecting much anyway....

Mister Coaster 01-05-2007 01:15 PM

Alien Vs. Predator
OK, it's a "check your brain at the opening credits" type of flick. I thought it was actually well done from the aspect of how they took these 2 completely different series and tied them together. The fights between the Aliens & Predators were the best part. They definately took liberties with how quickly the aliens matured, because I remember them taking longer in the previous Alien flicks.
6.5 of 10

Spirited Away
An (apparently) very well received Anime. I found the charicters to be interesting art-wise, but rather flat otherwise. There was no real explanation as to how the girl got to the spirit world or why humans were so "bad." I would have stopped watching halfway through it, but I kept waiting for the big payoff, but it never really happened.

They said in the movie Alien vs. Predator that it takes longer in space because time slows down... The end was fabulous I thought. :)

Pan's Labyrinth 10 of 10. Incredible. Horrifying. Definitely not a children's movie. Heartwarming. Made me cry. er... yeah. Just walked out of the theatre. Maybe I'll write a better review when I'm not in shock.

Children of Men - 90%

A great movie. I was certainly not expecting that much action. It does the science fiction genre justice. Kinda felt like Half-Life 2 with non-combatants thrown in. Who'da thunk City 17 was actually an English refugee camp?

Lady Sage 01-07-2007 12:42 PM

Dodge Ball 8/10

Hillariously funny, has a moral to the story, brilliant hair/makeup and costumes and a really warped sense of humor. Ben Stiller as a bad guy? Wow. Just Wow.

Just kidding, but not really. (Watch the movie and youll get the line.) :)

8 Femmes (8 Women)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283832/

This movie was directed by the man who did Swimming Pool. It is a very fun, campy movie about 1 man who is murdered and 8 women who all have motives to have committed the murder. Campy is a word to remember because each woman has a song that is entertaining, but pretty silly and thrown in at strange times. Reminded me a bit of the scenes in 6 Feet Under when they would do that. I'm not sure if it is a movie the guys would like, but I enjoyed it for the mystery and silliness of it. Luckily, because it was a Christmas present from JJ and we had never seen it. But I loved Swimming Pool so much he figured since it is the same director and has Ludivine Sagnier in it there was a high chance I would like it. :)

Little Miss Sunshine...

Well it was my turn to see this little flick that seems to be picking up a lot of attention and even Oscar buzz lately... and I gotta say, I think there's a lot of smoke here, but not much fire. I thought this film was good, not great. Collette's the star of the show and the little girl is a close second. Kinnear and Carell were good characters, but not far enough removed from what I would consider their comfort zone, even though Carell had the biggest stretch of a character to play. The writing in the film was good, the direction was a little choppy at times. Overall, this was a road trip movie that didn't do enough in my opinion to make it stand out as any different from other road trip movies... it couldn't do it on the strength of the script or characters alone.
I give it 6.5/10

Halx 01-07-2007 11:00 PM

Aww how can you say that? Little Miss Sunshine was filled with great scenes, left and right.

Children of Men - 7/10
The best part of this movie was the cinematography. There were so many intense scenes that were seamless sequences without a single cut. You'll have to watch it twice to admire it. Another highlight for me was the soundtrack; every song had some vulgar, angsty line thrown randomly into it that would make me stop and just go, "Did I just hear that from the sountrack?" There is a lot of emotion infused into the scenes toward the end that help drive it through.

As far as the story goes, it was interesting, but it wasn't satisfying. There is no explanation done anywhere in the movie.. we simply have to take whatever we see as ... we see it. With a great performance from Clive Owen, everyone else in the movie is just going through the motions. There are a few comic relief characters who do their job well, but Julianne Moore and the rest of the "Fishes" are totally flat.

shesus 01-10-2007 02:56 PM

Jian Gui (The Eye) 9.5/10

This was the second time I saw this movie and it was just as creepy as the first. Of course, I have a horrible memory and couldn't remember the ending. I love that sometimes. :)

And now it's going to be even more popular because America has again remade an Asian horror movie. Although I think this one is better that the original Ring, maybe not quite as scary as the original Grudge.

I feel sorry for the character in this movie, which I'm usually feeling that they are stupid because it is a horror movie. There is also a great twist. Watch the original and hope America doesn't screw it up too much in the remake if you don't like subtitles.

Hotel Rwanda

I started thread related to the viewing of this movie, but I wanted to leave a short review of the film itself, as well.

While certainly not a major piece of cinematic art (which is comforting, really, the subject matter doesn't warrant the fancies of a filmmaker's ego) I thought it was a very good film for relaying the horror of one of the worst exhibitions of brutality in the the latter half of the 20th century without resorting to either overt displays of violence or sentimentality. This was a respectful and purposeful film that succeeded on most every relevant level. I've always thought that Don Cheadle was one of the finest and most likable actors working today. I love his quiet and unassuming charm. This film is certainly the most outstanding example to date of his turning that charm to a near flawless and believable characterization. The film is populated with many other notable performances, as well, although I thought Nick Nolte and Joaquin Phoenix's performances were oddly unmemorable - perhaps for good reason - their roles were pretty utilitarian. If I were to turn any criticism to this film, based solely on a cinematic level, it would be that the dialogue in places is a little expository in that is used to tell us about the background of the Hutu/Tutsi conflict and events happening outside the hotel in awkward, unrealistic ways. But I can certainly understand the difficulty inherent in trying to tell a story like this from within such a limited perspective.

All in all I thought it was a very good film and I'll give it 9/10 stars.

Lady Sage 01-15-2007 08:37 AM

National Treasure

5/10 A cross between Indiana Jones, Davinci code and some Silence of the Lambs humor. Completely unoriginal but it did have some very good moments.

Pan will tell you that I was calling everything ahead of time....still the "treasure" will boggle your mind.

Mister Coaster 01-17-2007 08:48 AM

Inside Man

Pretty darn good. Well written and acted, fair action, lots of suspense. Denzel Washington is always worth watching, he's one of those actors that can make any movie better than the script. Good twists and turns, even though all the previews showed Washington shouting "This ain't no bank robbery!" so you knew there was going to be something more to the plot than the "robbery" ahead of time.

8 of 10

Lady Sage, I remember being pleasantly surprised by National Treasure. Nick Cage is VERY hit or miss, and I was predicting a miss on that one, but I actually enjoyed it pretty well. And yeah, the treasure room was really cool.

Children of Men : 8.5 / 10

Great movie, but very depressing. They really do a fantastic job with atmosphere and realism in this movie...

Gattaca - 8/10. I really liked the movie and the cast includes some of my favorite actors.

Doom - 2/10. Pure shit.

The Punisher - 5/10. Cool action scenes, lame story. Good flick to relax to.

Pan's Labyrinth - 7/10. I'm not exactly sure why it's been getting rave reviews. I thought it was decent. Great fantasy scenes though. The Pale Man was beyond creepy.

Tristan + Isolde - ?/10. I fell asleep half way through. Girlfriend made me watch it.

That's about it for this week.

I have had a campy, cheesy movie month. And I love it. :)

Murder by Death
This little 70s movie was so great and brainless. I guessed the 'mystery' before the others, but that's either because I read too many mysteries or the movie was that bad...in a good way. If you like Clue, you will probably enjoy this one. It's very similar in the fact that people are invited to a dinner party and trapped in a big mansion where a murder is going to take place.

Love campy, love Clue...gotta see it 9/10

Grasshopper Green 01-21-2007 02:54 PM

I first saw Clue when I was a child...and I still laugh every time I see it. It's classic

Hubby and I saw "Letters From Iwo Jima" yesterday, and I really liked it because it gave me a perspective I'd never really had before, and gave me a small idea of what it might have been like for the Japanese soldiers defending their homeland. It made the "enemy" seem a little real, a little human...a little like "us". Don't see if it you don't like subtitles because except for a few brief scenes, the entire thing is in Japanese. 3.5/5

MexicanOnABike 01-21-2007 07:17 PM

crank:
I'll definitely have to see this again just to see how fucked up this movie is.
imagine "speed" but replace BUS with HUMAN.(ok, not that similar but you get the idea). I thought the whole movie was a joke. nothing was taken seriously but it was still made with style. If you're a fan of the quick mindless action movies, check it out.
i rate it 7/10

The Illusionist starring Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, and Jessica Biel.

A supernaturally talented magician attempts to undermine the rigid social structure of turn-of-the-century Vienna by using his powers to win the love of his upper-class, childhood sweetheart in director Neil Burger's cinematic adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Steven Millhauser's short story. Though the ill-fated childhood romance between cabinetmaker's son Eisenheim (Edward Norton) and upper-class Sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel) eventually resulted in the heartbroken young man leaving Austria to explore the world, his dreams of one day reuniting with the beautiful duchess never faded. Upon returning to Vienna fifteen years later as a talented and renowned illusionist, Eisenheim's hopes of a reunion seem dashed when he learns that Sophie is currently engaged to the Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). As the tensions between the Eisenheim and Leopold elevate, urbane Chief Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti) finds his sympathy toward Eisenheim growing despite his formal obligations to the powerful prince. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Children of Men - 7/10

I wish I liked this movie more. I really wanted to love this movie.

While I admired its gritty realism and the performances of the two main characters (and, of course, Michael Caine - the only fleshly character in the whole film, afaic) this movie left me wanting. I wanted more characterization and less message (much less message). I wanted to understand more about these people and how they were affected, emotionally and psychologically, by the world they lived in. Not that I don't understand how they could go about their day largely without noticing the insanity around them. I understand the near-instinct we all have to rationalize our world in order to find the wherewithal to ignore the insanity and keep going. I don't know. I guess I felt I needed more backstory on the world they lived in. It seems a story more well-suited to a novel - perhaps it was one first, I don't know. If so, I'd be interested in reading it. As it was the instant immersion into this world without sufficient background felt a little like starting a new video game. And I just can't make those same concessions for film.

Somewhat of a spoiler:
Spoiler: And one more thing, the thing that bothered me most about this movie, why is it that human females were infertile but not animals of other species? This plagued me through the whole film. Perhaps someone with knowledge of a biological precedent for this sort of thing could enlighten me. My daughter thought that she had heard of this sort of thing happening with rodents and rabbits before, but she wasn't sure.

roachboy 01-22-2007 11:25 AM

the whole of the 7up series (7 up, 7 up plus 7, 21 up, 28 up, 35 up)
you watch a group of 14 british folk appear on camera at 7 year intervals--starting at 7 years old---and talk about their lives and the previous film clips in which they appeared as part of their lives. they spend a considerable amount of time arguing with their earlier selves, or qualifying wht their earlier selves said. but as a whole, the series is very interesting and in some cases quite sad.
definitely worth watching.

This movie was BAD. There were a few parts where I laughed (hence the 2) but overall it was a complete waste of a film...

i assume the remake, as i cant quite imagine the original being dissed that way. it was such a willfully strange film and came complete with all the usual hammerfilm cheese, including christopher lee. what's not to like?
i havent seen the remake. the fact that it is a remake is a problem, and on top of that there's nicholas cage.....

The Women - 10/10

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Made in 1939. I've probably seen it more than a dozen times, but it never gets old. It has so many wonderful qualities. Glorious black and white photography. Lavish sets and costuming. A stellar all-female cast: Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Joan Fontaine, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Mary Boland, Marjorie Main and little Virginia Weidler. (There is not a single solitary man present in this movie, not even an extra - which is amusing since the movie also happens to revolve around them, lol.) A fashion show in color (I love old movies with fashion shows!). Paulette Goddard in an adorable cowgirl outfit - hubba hubba! And even a catfight! MEOW!

This film was directed by George Cukor after famously being fired as director of Gone with the Wind. I've never been so happy to know that someone I admire was fired from their job. :p This film was tailor-made for Cukor who was known as "a woman's director" and has the breathtaking glamour and biting humor that he is remembered for in abundance.

Basically the crux of the film's plot questions how a "good" woman should react when she finds her husband is being unfaithful. Don't want to give anything away, but some viewers may find the film's answer to that question to be uncomfortably retrograde. But I like to keep in mind the times when watching old movies like these and not attach my own generation's values to them. Besides, I don't think the points made in this film are totally without merit. For either men or women.

I highly recommend this film to anyone who likes old classics. Even though it is not as well known as many others, it is one of the best of the best.

And did I mention Paulette Goddard in a cowgirl outfit? :p
