Polar Express: Enjoyable, not great, just good, its a good kids movie rated G. Slow part in the middle, Tom Hanks plays/voices multiple characters.

Lefty04 11-22-2004 05:18 PM

WHite Chicks on video. Really weak, almost painful to watch. (And I like the whole Wayans family.)

jaded 11-22-2004 08:10 PM

taxi: jimmy fallon should have just stuck to the small screen. he\'s not nearly as cute and talented as on SNL.

Kadath 11-22-2004 08:33 PM

Incredibles: 9/10. Awesome. I walked out of the theater hoping for a sequel.

lpj8 11-22-2004 08:48 PM

Elf

I saw this on DVD in my living room, and I disagree with the previous poster. I thought that it was really well thought out, and is a great family movie. It is definitely a feel good movie that made me laugh on multiple occasions.

Suave 11-22-2004 11:31 PM

Collateral (theatre):

Awesome movie. Started out kind of slow, but slow with good plot and acting, making it watchable. Tom Cruise was actually pretty badass in this, and Jamie Foxx and Jada Pinkett-Smith were both good as well. A couple of unexpected twists, and some damn fine suspense made this a movie worth watching, and I'd watch it again. Thank you, Michael Mann.

9/10

Grancey 11-25-2004 10:07 PM

National Treasure. I was surprised because this movie not at all what I expected. I enjoyed it. It was purely a fun movie to watch.

Lefty04 11-26-2004 07:15 PM

Bad Santa - Not as entertaining as I expected.

Elf - More entertaining than I expected.

Both will change the way I look at departtment store Santas.

heccubusiv 11-26-2004 07:26 PM

National Treasure- to long to be pg
Saved- not as good as Dogma but still pretty good
Enteral Sunshine of the Spotless mind- amazing one of the best i have ever seen

fallsauce 11-26-2004 07:34 PM

The Prince and Me - cute, Eddie's accent may be a bit *too* posh, but whatever, he's great. Julia Stiles had a really deep voice which surprised me at first, but it was fine after a while. Overall, great movie for the girls.

13 Going on 30 - Meh, very disappointed. It was boring and tepid. Pretty much hated everyone in there, especially Matt (both past and present.) I felt that Sydney (Alias) was coming through too much, mostly because Jennifer Garner used the exact same expressions here as in Alias.
And the storyline isn't anything to write home to either.

Baldylocks2 11-26-2004 09:13 PM

Backbeat - DVD

This movie is all about the future Beatles' time in Hamburg, Germany, focusing on the relationship between Stu Sutcliffe, the band's original bass player and Astrid Liebherr, and how it affects Stu's friendship with John Lennon. The movie is quite good and there is quite a bit of boobage for everyone. Great music of course, as well.

The only part I really didn't like was the implication that John Lennon may have been a bisexual, which is overplayed a bit IMHO. George Harrison and Pete Best unfortunately have only fairly minor roles. I would have liked to see them, especially Pete, developed a bit more.

Still, a solid ****/*****

Suave 11-27-2004 12:20 AM

Troy (DVD)
Only watched half so far, but I like it. Above par acting, script that doesn't make me cringe, and some pretty good fighting. 8/10

Strange Famous 11-27-2004 01:30 AM

Half Past Dead - Steven Siegal, Ja Rule, Kurupt & Nia Peeples

Very silly prison/shoot out type movie, morally confusing, Ja Rule rather annoying (his acting range involves a serious of facial ticks), Kurupt quite funny, Seigel playing his usual good cop in a bad mood, looking rather portly these days, Nia Peeples lookinggorgeous and ridicously over acting. All in all it was good harmless fun as far as it went, but nothing original or likely to make one think, just about sustains interest to the end. 2/5

Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever.

Hated the movie. Storyline was everywhere and I had trouble following it for some reason. I actually understood more of the movie watching the documentary than the the actual film. Too much unnecessary action.

Glad that it was only rented.

1slOwCD8 11-28-2004 09:56 AM

I just saw Elf on dvd, i thought it was pretty good, a little cheezy, but really funny.

powerclown 12-01-2004 11:03 AM

The Ladykillers - 7/10

Big, huge fan of the Coen Bros' movies; this is their latest. Tom Hanks in the lead role as dainty, erudite, Southern Professor G.H. Dorr. Nowhere near as funny as Raising Arizona, Barton Fink or The Big Lebowski, but there are some funny moments, and a lot of the trademark quirkiness typical of the Coen Bros. They've mellowed with success, unfortunately: no more raw edged, laugh out loud stuff.

Astronaut's Wife - 6/10

Johnny Depp / Charlize Theron vehicle that, despite the big names and big bucks, barely hangs on. Depp as an astronaut who comes back from a space flight mishap somehow...different, as illustrated through his wife, Theron. For all his critics, I happen to think Depp a very, very good actor. The scenario here is basically a Rosemary's Baby ripoff, all the way down to Theron sporting the blonde and way-short Mia Farrow hairdo. It's slick, stylish and fast-paced, but not very scary.

default_i 12-01-2004 11:29 AM

National Treasure - I wasn't really expecting too much, but aside from standard movie crap (ooooh, look at how bad a shot all the bad guys are!) it was very entertaining. Had a good few one liners in there too, which is always cool with me. Pretty good time waster, if nothing else.

Ultimate_Gohan 12-01-2004 12:12 PM

Dodgeball
It was OK, to too bad. Its a rental at least.

bigpappasmurf 12-01-2004 03:34 PM

Trainspotting
9/10

its a great story, i just dont have any time to write about it right now, about to head over to a mate's house for a bit

Kostya 12-02-2004 01:13 AM

Team America...

Kinda funny, I guess. Not exactly rewatchable, but for what it was, decent...

crossova 12-02-2004 10:48 AM

The incredibles - 3/5, i didnt like some of the drawings of the characters but it was an amusing flix. *pat on the back for Pixar*
Swim Fan -2/5, typical crazy chick movie with unbelievable events taking place all throughout the movie

frankx 12-02-2004 08:45 PM

I saw Spiderman 2 on DVD for the first time today. Not being a fan of the first one, I didn't expect much, but I give it a 3 out of 5.

Garden State. Awesome movie, 9/10.

Ladykillers.....1/5
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.....4/5
Supersize Me.............4/5
Matchstick Men........4/5
Be Good, Smile Pretty.........5/5
Passion of the Christ.........2/5
The Girl Next Door.........2/5

At the moment I have The Alamo, Farenheit 9/11, and Butterfly Effect, so those will be my next reviews

"space is the place"
in a recently discovered 35 mm print with great sound....um....i am so far from objective about sun ra that it makes no sense to pretend to rate this. it is a film with/about sun ra.
it includes sequences that are about the revenge of the pianist.
how could a film like this be bad--or merely good--how could it not be--well....you get the idea.

stevo 12-03-2004 08:28 AM

Sleepers

My friend brought it over on DVD. Never seen it before. Great movie. I give it 4.5 stars.

Strange Famous 12-04-2004 10:39 AM

The Big Green

Disney kids movie. group of misfits play a sport, become unlikely champions against rival team coached by bad guy... all very predictable, but good fun and quite well done, some funny parts.

2.5/5

Master_Shake 12-04-2004 04:52 PM

Closer
4.5/5
So much more enjoyable than most of the nonsense relationship movies that come out. A little contrived at times, but had some real depth and decent dialogue.

And Natalie Portman is smoking hot.

Grasshopper Green 12-04-2004 05:12 PM

Just got back from Finding Neverland.....great movie. Very well acted. 5/5

grendel 12-07-2004 11:52 AM

Mr. Deeds - 5/10. At times pretty funny, but more or less exactly the movie I expected. The scene that cracked me up was the Space Oddity sing along in the plane when they're bringing Deeds to New York toward the beginning of the movie. Oh, and I dug the Steve Buscemi and John Turturro characters. Borrowed the DVD from a friend who's a big Adam Sandler fan.

dman2 12-07-2004 01:03 PM

I saw two movies yesterday.
One was National Treasure in the theatre. It was a very good movie. This is the movie with Nicholas Cage and he and a group of people are searching for a buried treasure using clues from currency, etc. One clue leads to another. I recommend seeing it.

The other movie was Hero with Jet Li. I watched it at home. It was good for the action, special effects and color. I hated reading the whole time since it was spoken in Mandarin. I feel like the movie could have been done in about a half hour. It took too long to tell the story in my opinion. Altogether I would rate the claim as good, only because it seemed like it took a long time to think it up and it was different than most.

Kostya 12-08-2004 05:48 PM

No Man's Land...

Well I'm devastated, this movie was fucking superb.

Ishmal 12-08-2004 06:15 PM

the last movie i watched was the latest Harry Potter...

the Prisoner of Azkaban

i suppose it would be a good movie to ppl who haven't read the book... but i found it really crap cause i enjoyed the book...
but i've said that about almost every book to movie i'v ever wathched...
i can't wait to see how they ruin the next book...

the Goblet of Fire.

spindles 12-08-2004 07:30 PM

We watched "I Robot" on the weekend. It was actually pretty good, though Asimov is rolling over in his grave, I suspect.

It's weird you say this because I have heard nothing but how amazing this movie is. I can't wait to get on the ol' Netflix

The last movie I just saw was Butterfly Effect (Director's Cut) -- never wanted to see it in the theaters, but heard good things. I thought the movie was very entertaining. Not the best acted, but cool story..... 3/5

Wow that's pretty cool. How'd you get in on that? I saw it lastnight due to good reviews here and at Premieremag.com (my main source of reviews :)) and liked it. I think it could have been a little more visually artistic for the feel it was going for, but it was good overall. Jonny Deep is still great as usual.

9/10

i want my 6 hours back
all i have heard is great things about this (so it had a lot to live up to)
i was very disappointed, i kept waiting for it to get better and it didn't
nicely shot, but often seems too much like a filmed play
characters only somewhat interesting, prone to pontificate about nonsense

Bought Spider-man 2 on DVD the other day and finally got around to watching it. A great representation of the comic series. 5/5

Supersize Me

9/10 (as far as documentaries go)

I've heard loads and loads of hype about this movie and tried to see it without any bias. It lived up to the expectations though. I really liked how convincing and different each of the doctors were. It's nice that he treated it like a true science experiment with tests before, during, and after, while handling all of the variables and such.

I for one loved the movie. I think it'd be nice to say a little more about why you personally didn't like it so other people don't see your review and decide not to see the film for ambiguous reasons.

matteo101 12-13-2004 06:59 PM

ok im sorry. I dont know what it was to be honest. it was too long, and WAY too slow. nothing to keep you interested. I think the acting was great, but that only goes so far, the story and the idea was pretty dull IMO. By the end you just wanted it to be over.

Ocean's 12: 6.5/10

Meh. Ocean's 11 was soooo much better. Lots of pretty people in this movie which was great to see, Yay brad pitt and matt damon. The "laser dance" was probably the highlight....watch it in the 2nd run theater if you want, or rent it.

Dirty Pretty Things
8/10
Surprisingly good!!...not what i expected ...but FANTASTIC performances by the two main characters (one of them is the girl who played Amelie)....portrays immigrant/alien life in the big city, the fears, the struggles, how people prey on them, and how they have their own community ...in between it all is a very disturbing murder so you have a drama/thriller on your hands.

blitz.fenix 12-25-2004 05:36 PM

Waterworld = 8/10

I like it a lot despite all the negative review for it. Could have been done better but hey it's good for what it is.

I agree with you. I was expecting a really good movie similarly as Ocean's 11. But was really dissapointed.

Meet the Fockers: 7.5/10

Wasn't the best comedy I've ever seen, but not nearly as bad as some critics have made it out to be. Had some great jokes and gags throughout, and was great for a good number of good laughs. Ben Stiller is always the same character (with varying degrees of awkwardness/weirdness), but I always love him. I'd see it again if someone asked me to come along with them to see it, but otherwise would wait until it's out on DVD to give it a second viewing.

sinjien 12-26-2004 06:54 PM

7.5!!?!! for Meet the Fockers!? F that! Way funnier than the first one by far. And his parents were hilarious. Any and all Ben Stiller fans must see this movie. I personally feel that some of his roles are crap but there is something about this cast lineup that has it. Saw it christmas day and everyone in the theatre clapped as the credits began. That deserves, at the least, an 8.5.

former newt 12-26-2004 11:09 PM

i'd say 8.5 for fockers. by far, funnier than meet the parents.

qweds 12-27-2004 01:02 AM

2 for 1 sale today,

Team America World Police: Saw it first in theaters and loved it 5/5. Then bought a cheap pirated version in Russia. FYI this movie is much better in english, much better.

Brat 2: This is actually a Russian movie but it's set in Moscow and Chicago. Saw it on DVD. Anyway the hero is a sort of Russian McGuiver, an ex-army guy who is super coo' and super bad. Hot damn I'm hip. Good flick, some neat camera stuff and good violence. Long as shit though, like three hours. Anyway I don't know if it's available in the states, I imagine somewhere - if yo don't know Russian though make sure to get ti with subtitle. 4/5

neekap 12-27-2004 05:19 AM

50 First Dates - 7.5/10 - Romantic comedy meets Adam Sandler. His movies, while decent, seem like the same thing over and over again. Hasn't gotten too old yet, but Rob Schneider (sp) needs to do something than making a career of being a co-star in a Sandler movie.

I agree with you, this was a very good movie. I got to see one of those director's screenings of this over a year ago, and thought it was very good.

Let's see, my last movies watched............

Rules of Engagement ........... 2/5
Secret Window .................. 3/5
Lemony Snickets, etc, etc ........ 4/5

There you go. In order, no need to see, probably should see, and definitely need to see.

radioguy 12-30-2004 06:48 PM

club dredd --- typical slasher/comedy movie to me. a bunch of unexplained survival of wounds, a small amount of nudity, should have been more. 2/5

blitz.fenix 12-30-2004 07:19 PM

Shaun of the Dead: Bought it on DVD the other day and I still love its charm and funniness. 9.5 out of 10.(Why else would I buy it?) :p

mrklixx 12-30-2004 08:12 PM

The Manchurian Candidate (2004)

4 out of 10

I haven't seen the original so my rating is based solely on this version. It just seemed very lacking to me. No real surpises or suspense, and you pretty much knew where it was going from the beginning. Deanzel and Liev Schreiber are both decent actors, but the writing and the pacing just was very stale.

FngKestrel 12-31-2004 12:23 AM

Ocean's Twelve - A pretty good followup to Ocean's Eleven. Good heist movie, though mildly convoluted and a tad too long. 8/10

Krycheck 01-01-2005 11:56 PM

I'd give the Fockers a 9/10. I would have laughed harder if I didn't have a sore throat LOL
Something about DiNero in comedy roles that's just great. Hoffman and Streisand were awsome too. Stiller can be too much in some of his movies but this one wasn't all about him this time. Both sets of parents were great in this one.

Kadath 01-03-2005 09:51 AM

Eight hours back from Europe means I got to watch a few movies.

Collateral: 7/10. Solid.
I, Robot: 5/10. I thought it was going to even worse than that, but it shaped up in the last 45 minutes, so it gets a pass.
Around the World in 80 Days: 3/10, and that only for some decent fight scenes. I was hard up when I watched that one.

oktjabr 01-03-2005 02:00 PM

King Arthur, went easily straight to the crappiest movies I have ever seen. The continuous battling, uninteresting characters and incoherent plot nearly finished me off. Not to mention that Keira Knightley (who is a fine looking lass) was totally unconvincing with that bow. Luckily, I wasn't really expecting much.

2 / 10.

(I haven't still found a true 1 / 10 movie, though)

tellumFS 01-03-2005 02:17 PM

Garden State - Written, directed, and starred in by Zach Braff from Scrubs. Not bad, kind of the dead to the world and then I wake up love story. The actor who played Bilbo in LOTR was in it, and everytime I saw him, I thought to myslef "BILBO!". Overall, I'd say 8/10

Ella 01-03-2005 02:55 PM

I finally caught up with 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' last night on DVD and it was every bit as good (and better) as I'd heard. What a truly great film.

9/10 from me.

screamincheetah 01-03-2005 03:09 PM

alright, my last two.........

Garfield....no joke. I have Netflix so a lot of times I'm watching the things I'd never pay to see in the theater. This one was pretty darn bad. I thought with Bill Murray doing the voice that it might be pretty decent. I really got it for sentimental reasons since I loved Garfield as a kid. I'd say 1/5

Stepford Wives.... Um, I'd have to say that I was pretty entertained. Nothing deep, or terribly well writen but it moves along well, is an interesting premise, and is entertaining............. 3/5

rhaevyn 01-03-2005 08:52 PM

Last movie I watched was "Clue" with Tim Curry. I'll give it a 4/5. :)

aberkok 01-03-2005 09:37 PM

Saw "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," and while it didn't knock me out of the park, I couldn't stop laughing at a couple of scenes. When Brick says: "where did you get your suits...the toilet?...store!?..." I nearly died. Also, the jazz flute scene made liquid come out of my nose.

7.5/10

Ella 01-03-2005 11:04 PM

'Meet The Fockers' today...the highlight for me was Dustin and Barb - they hammed up their roles perfectly. The De Niro character just got a little staid and uninteresing for me, and the laughs were still there, but not as forthcoming as I would have liked.

6.5/10

sailor 01-04-2005 08:44 AM

Garden State. One of my new favorite movies. I liked everything about it. 9.5/10.

FatherTed 01-04-2005 08:52 AM

Troy.
Not much to say really
Some good fight scenes, and good effects
Brad Pitt's acting was pretty bad. The rest of the cast was not too shabby.
Paased about 120 minutes, but i think I'd like them back.

6/10

Daoust 01-04-2005 10:25 AM

In the last two days I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, which I loved and would give 8/10 which is very high if you knew my rating system.

Secondly I watched Napoleon Dynamite last night and laughed my ass off. If you haven't seen this movie, I strongly suggest you go pick it up! Absolutely hilarious, but still 8.5/10. Nobody's perfect.

kulrblind 01-04-2005 10:29 AM

I saw The Life Aquatic last weekend...fabulous! I liked it better than Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums, but there's no accounting for tastes.

I give it a 8/10 -- Would see it again in a theatre (maybe even at full-price).

DHS 01-04-2005 06:50 PM

My girlfriend bought me Troy today and I decided to actually watch a DVD I bought. Suffice to say I thought it was an excellent movie. The plot was not historically accurate, but if you thought it was going to be then you need to have you head checked. The acting was good and Brad Pitt was able to pull off the cocky fighter very well. I thought the action seens were well done and the individual fights were well choreographed. Overrall it is an exciting movie and I would recommend it to anyone.

Ella 01-04-2005 09:00 PM

'Garden State' today. What a brilliant job that guy did of writing, directing and acting. I've never noticed his lips before....they are quite luscious!

Excellent flick....8/10.

veronika voss

a very cool fassbinder film shot in lovely lovely black and white. curious music and/or sound.
a couple nights ago, we saw diary of a country priest, about which the same things could be said, substituting brassens.

Blade Trinity:

Wow, I wanted to cut my wrists, stab a stake through my own heart, and shoot myself in the head twice. If you're looking to blow 6-10 dollars on decent special effects, shitty plot, Jessica Biel shaking her shit (the girl is absolutely gorgeous), Wesley Snipes destroy vampires a third time, and Ryan Reynolds crack stupid jokes, this one is for you.

soccerchamp76 01-06-2005 01:08 PM

Blade: Trinity
One long iPod commercial and the only redeeming quality about the movie was Jessica Biel being hot and Ryan Reynolds comedy.

Meet the Fockers
Despite sitting 2 rows back and being nauseas, the movie was hilarious albeit a bit predictable.

Ocean's 12
Great movie, confusing plot at times. End was pretty neat although a tad predictable. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Matt Damon work brilliantly in this movie.

hilbert25 01-06-2005 09:46 PM

Pretty great movie. Light on plot, really cool scenes. I wasn't too big a fan of Jet Li before, but he moves so fluidly in his scenes, that I realize all of this stuff where they teach stars "martial arts" in a couple of weeks is crap. They'll never be able to move like him.

saddest music in the world

a guy maddin extravaganza. visually quite interesting film. musically too. the writing....um....not sure. maddin is a very cool director and his short films are fascinating. i am not sure that he has worked out how to operate as effectively in a long form. more investigation required. his films--including this one--are recommended for the visuals and sound at the very least.

Wimbledon

3.0/5.0

The movie is about a couple of Tennis players that fall in love. There are too many things though that aren't true about what people do at Wimbledon. Makes me angry when movies aren't accurate.

Anchorman - 6/10. i generally like will ferrell and expected to really like this movie, but i thought it was just a little better than ok. it was funny, sometimes even very funny, but not consistently so (at least, to me). i bought this instead of Dodgeball with some store credit i had from a Christmas return because i'd already seen Dodgeball. now that i've seen both, i kinda wish i'd bought Dodgeball (i actually wanted to buy Shaun of the Dead, but that store didn't have it). the Brick Tamland character almost brings this rating up a whole point as far as i'm concerned - he was great! my two favorite scenes: Afternoon Delight (which i'd seen several times prior to actually seeing the movie) and the big rumble with all the different news teams (lots of great cameos there!).

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou -- 5/5

Another powerful Wes Anderson journey. My fear that he tried to duplicate The Royal Tenenbaums was nullified as I saw that Anderson only tried to tell an equally capitivating (and strangely realistic) story. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD!

61*

The movie about Roger Marris and Mickey Mantle's run at breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record. This movie was very accurate, and very well done. It's amazing to see the drama, passion, and feelings that went into baseball during that time from the players to the fans on through the media. It makes breaking that record then seem like a much greater accomplishment then what McGuire did since the whole world was rooting for him........ and then there were the 'roids. That's a whole different argument though.

4/5

'Supersize Me'

Fascinating and just a little bit scary.

8/10

The Aviator
Excellent movie. Cool color. The first half of the film is processed to look like two strip technocolor, the second half to resemble three strip technocolor. Even without the cool movie nerd stuff, it's an excellent story. Great acting by Decaprio (never thought I'd say that). 9.5/10.

Closer - 5/10

I came out of the theatre disappointed. The plot was not very strong, missing many supporting details that could've given more credibility or even understanding to it. Given, the movie managed to keep me in my seat without getting too anty, and Natalie Portman was beautiful as usual...but if you just want to see her I strongly recommend Garden State.

Shaun of the Dead - 9/10. i've been dying to see this one (pun intended), and finally picked up a copy yesterday and got to watch it tonight. i bought it without having seen it because i had a feeling it was gonna be right up my alley, and boy was it ever. excellent flick with a nice mix of humor and horror. and for fans of The Office, we get to see 2 cast members here (one is no more than a cameo, but the other is a significant role). anyway, i can tell i'm gonna be watching this one a lot.

Saw The Aviator two weeks ago; loved it. The story itself was a little dry at some places, but the acting was incredible. 5/5

Meet the Fockers. Meh. 2/5

shadows

an early cassavetes film. lots of interesting stuff floating about. but for some reason, every word that is spoken in thie film has a strange kind of cadence to it. and a very cool formal game playing around with black and white (the film, the plot). i would not start here with cassavetes, but this is a cool film.

Before Sunset.... I never saw Before Sunrise, but I don't think you need to have seen it to see this followup. They recap it all pretty well. I was impressed with this movie. There's nothing fancy, in fact it's basically one shot/one conversation. It's just one of those dialogues that put perfectly into words the way you're feeling or have felt about life. When a writer can convey that as well as this movie did, it's worth seeing............. 4/5

White Noise - terrible. I watch a lot of bad movies, and usually there are one or two redeeming qualities about them, like "Well, at least it made me laugh" or "At least it made me jump" but no. Not White Noise. I couldn't wait for it to be over, almost walked out. 0/10.

life aquatic - 4.25/5

i've liked every film he has made, yet remained impressed with this one
only minor complaint...cgi never blends with film well enough
other than that, story is funny, characters excellent
