Hah, almost saw that, glad I didnt.

My last one was Guess Who? Which dispite the dumb title (makes me think of the kid's game) turned out to be funny. Not that best movie but not bad either.

Napoleon Dynamite - I guess I'm one of the folks the humor seems to be wasted on. I chuckled a couple of times, but other than that...zilch. Maybe..maybe a 3/10.

Constantine - Despite all the shit I heard about this movie sucking, I actually enjoyed it. I imagine it's because I wasn't familiar with the character from the hellblazer comics (or whatever series the movie is based loosely on). I thought it looked good, had some good stuff in the story and Rachel Weisz in a wet shirt always scores good in my book. Should've been a bit grittier in my opinion a little more backstory couldn't have hurt. 8/10

Be Cool

John Travolta reprises his role as Chili Palmer and Danny DeVito as Martin Weir in little more than a cameo. This time Chili, who by now is disenchanted with the movie business, wants to produce music.

The problem I have with Be Cool is that it tries to be Get Shorty all over again. Several of the scenes are transplanted almost directly from the first film (we now have the Cadillac of hybrids instead of the Cadillac of minivans) and there are a number of indirect parallels. Had I not seen the original I would've enjoyed this movie immensely; however, the humour now seems stale, as most of it is recycled.

The thing that saves this movie from being totally abysmal is the acting. The Rock puts out a great performance as Elliot, the gay bodyguard, Andre 3000 plays rapper Dabu to perfection and Cedric the Entertainer as producer/extortionist Sin LaSalle works out surprisingly well. John Travolta of course fits the Chili Palmer role perfectly and Uma Thurman turns in an acceptable performance as Edie Athens. To her credit, there wasn't a whole lot to the character, meaning she really didn't have much to work with. Travolta and Thurman play well off each other, but fall short of the sizzling chemistry seen in Pulp Fiction, perhaps due to the inferior script to work with.

Be Cool can't decide what it wants to be. It alternately pokes fun at itself, sequels in general and Get Shorty, then attempts to change gears and become more serious. Throughout the film I got the feeling that it was an attempt to recapture the success of the first film by repackaging it, which means at the end of the day I paid twice for the same movie. If you watch this one, watch it because you like the actors. Don't watch it because of the film it follows.

The March of the Penguins.

Loved it. It's amazing what these birds to to survive and continue the species; I can't think of a more miserable and rough existence. The chicks are one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Highly recommended for bird or animal lovers. 4/5

The story was pretty much standard Hollywood. Predictable. I did like the overall look of the movie though. I do recommend going to see it if for the sole reason that if its successfull then maybe it will be easier for Terry Gilliam to make movies like Brazil, Fear and Loathing, and 12 Monkeys...

The Constant Gardener.

I was constantly bored. 2 hours into the movie it occurred to me that Everything I knew now I'd known in the first 15 minutes of the film. Which made watching it a completely meaningless waste of time. It's gotten great reviews, but I was not amused. Or even remotely entertained. The pace is so slow and well..it's just that...nothing happens. At all. For the entire length of the film.

2 out of 10. It deserves a little more than that but I just don't care.

After trying at least a dozen times to read the book, imagine my shock to learn that the movie adaptation is boring as well? :)

Timeline - Lord, it was horrible. It might have been at least tolerable, if not for Paul Walker. It's like they took Ted "Theodore" Logan and slapped him down in the middle of King Lear. If not for him (and that horrible french guy who played Francois), then this movie might have been, well, not the greatest, but at least mediocre.

They turned a mediocre Michael Crichton and made an embarassingly bad movie about it... I guess, in hindsight, that's just about right, isn't it?

Oh well - 3/10 for me. Paul Walker replaced with wood carving in non-speaking role - 6/10 He was really...really that bad.

I have to say that I was suprised by Disney. Everyone told me that it was a good movie but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Also I really liked Johnny Depp in it. The fx were nicely done as well.

Transporter 2.

I loved the first one. This one had AMAZING cars. But this movie was just WAY too far over the top to be even remotely believable. There were too many moments where I had to stop and laugh because it was so bad. Some incredible stunts though, but just WAY too unrealistic for me.

4/10 (2/10 if not for the kickass cars)

Madagascar - 4.5/10
Much too much dance numbers, much too thin plot. A lot more could have been made of it. Plus, way too many references to (obscure) grown-up movies and stuff.

I liked the penguins, I wanted more of them. The monkeys were funny too. "Of course we are going to fling poo at him!"

I just watched Land Of The Dead.
Not sure what I think really. I thought it was good as a stand-alone zombie flick, but as part of the Romero zombie trilogy, it just didn't fit. It all seemed a bit too 'glossy'. And the zombies becoming smart? WTF is that all about?! Isn't that kind of the antithesis of 'zombie'.

Why !?!?!?

This was the one of the most overrated movies that I've seen in a while. The plot was a different take on 'group of guys go on last hurrah' storyline [in this case two, and instead of teenagers, they're middle-aged men].
At first, this story was believable and I was enjoying Miles' character. However, as the story went on, it became more of the two guys getting pootang [seemed a bit too extravangant - i.e. Spoiler: how does Stephanie and Maya even know each other, it was mentioned only brief, IIRC.
In the end, Jack didn't seem like he learned his lesson; and well, Miles does [I suppose] , but the backstory of his divorce came out of nowhere [a bit too much].

Maybe I'll appreciate this film when I become a middle-aged yuppie wino.....

I agree. I was upset with the movie. The only reason I was upset was because, George Romero directed it. It didn't really fit the "Romero" style if you will. I'm going to see Romero at "Shock and Rock" festival. I want my "Dawn of the Dead"(1978) Special Edition autographed by him. I can't wait. That's the best zombie movie, ever! Land of the Dead was a bad Romero movie, but he is a genius!

The Exorcism of Emily Rose- I went to see it last night. It's more of a courtroom drama than a thriller. But I already knew that. I expect most in the theatre didn't though.
Anyways, I found it to be very interesting. The debate between science and faith has always been such a big issue, and the flow of the movie makes it all the more entertaining to watch. You even get a few chuckles out of the courtroom banter. :P
I give it 4/5; it might have been higher had I watched it alone. The theatre was very loud, and this guy beside me was humming through the entire movie.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

This has to be the funniest film I've seen since Anchorman, based on the Laugh-out-loud-ometer. Some scenes really had my drink snorting out my nose!
I'm gonna watch it again in it's 'non-pirate' form when it comes out on DVD. Maybe the better quality will make me laugh even more!

zVp 09-10-2005 09:08 PM

The Cave

The beginning was good with all the suspense and stuff, but then it went downhill. It was only worth watching once and that's all. Not even worth buying or even renting the DVD when it comes out. If anyone wants a movie to just watch because it's a free friday and you've seen all the other movies, just watch this one but don't expect too much from it nor expect to watch it again.

The book is SO much better...it is so detailed and complex, the movie just couldn't do it justice. (Wasn't too bad IMO) Clive Cussler is the man though!!

Anyway, I saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose yesterday. I hate scary movies, but this one wasn't too bad. Laura Linney did a pretty good job, and so did the guy who played the priest (I don't know his real name). I'd say 3/5.

Okay, I finally tivo'd Napoleon Dynamite because I wanted to know what the BFD was, why the shirts? Why the quotes?

It was okay, but not much better than "3 O'Clock High". What's the BFD? Is it 4:20 everywhere? Non-stop?

I would recommend it, especially for LaFawnduh, and Jared Hess had a truly great turn as a writer. His acting... was standard. I got all the little plotlets, but it just wasn't that riveting.

Keep in mind, that I am a film junkie. I devour things like "Pecker".... oh... how bad does that sound? I mean I appreciate films outside of the mainstream. I guess I'm just getting old.

Although, I have the strongest urge to say gosh right now.

Two new reviews. Pardon the legnth but they're taken from my movie review section I do on MySpace.

Review: The Brothers Grimm

Terry Gilliam is just about my favorite director. I've been following the production of this movie, as well as another of his which is already in post-production (Tideland), for a long time now. I recall early-production photo releases, ever-changing slated release dates, and my excitement when the poster was first released. When it finally approached release date, I was confused to see it getting bad critic reviews. I didn't see the movie when it first came out, so I also encountered bad reviews by people on forums I frequent (this is you TFP'ers!), as well as from some real-life friends. Complaints included jumbly story lines, excessive hollywood-ness, etc. I never got my hopes down though and assumed that even if the story and screen play sucked that I'd still recieve a visual treat from Gilliam no matter what. Anyhow, what's to expect ? Almost all of my favorite movies (aka my favorite Gilliam movies) have largely been considered financial flops.

All in all I really enjoyed the movie. I kept on feeling my imagination stirring, similar to the way fairy tales affect youthful minds (the grimm brother's wrote many original fairy tales). This what I expect from Gilliam, and this film proves he's still good at it. My only choice is to ask haters of this film "where's your imagination?" I didn't see subliminal Coca-Cola ads, the main female character wasn't an advertized Scarlet Johansen, nothing was dumbed-down for the general Amerkian public, and everything seemed pretty true to the era. The film was simply about the *film* instead of the money bringer-inners (call ledger and damon what ever you want, I loved their acting). I'm sure any true Gilliam fan will enjoy the film as it's a swirling carnival of goofy actors, goofy situations, and awesome art direction. I mean c'mon, how perfect does this lineup sound? Matt Damon plays a selfish smartass, Heath Ledger is a slow-thinking romantic third wheel, Jonathan Pryce a jaded Nepolianic French leader, and Peter Stormare as Pryce's deranged second-hand man(the German nihilist from The Big Lebowski).

-3/4 stars-

very mild Spoiler: Two things that were Gilliam dead giveaways (both of which I loved) were the "high-tech" stethoscope Damon uses and the Pryce scene with the huge elegant dining hall that turns out to be just a small group of guests surrounded by mirrors.

Review: My Architect

I was recommended this film by a cool guy I recently befriended who's really into industrial design. Anyhow, I stumbled upon it at Blockbuster and had to check it out.

In short, it's a documentary about Louis Kahn, a famous architect of the 1900's. The film is directed by Nethaniel Kahn, Louis' son, and it stars himself. Throught the movie, he traces his father's life, which included three different wives/families whom he disregarded due to extreme focus on his work. Nethaniel never really knew Louis as he died a mysterious death when he was eleven, so the film basically plays off his emotions as he pieces together who his father was through first time interviews of people he worked or had families with.

I don't think I could decide how many stars to give it because the star system is usually in comparison with other films, mostly being "movies." I'll just say that I recommend it to anyone interested in architecture, design, or even family values. It goes into nice detail of how radical Louis was about his work and his complete ignorance to how much he was affecting the loved ones around him.

American version. It was like watching two hours of a normal persons normal day with a couple minutes of horror tacked on to the end. I'm going to have to kick it up to a 2/10 though to make room for fantastic four which I'm giving the 1/10.

This supposed thriller doesn't seem to realize it's more like a comedy. I'm being generous by giving it a 2/10 because in all fairness, it did make me laugh. However, like a lot of other bad thriller movies, it gets so tangled up in the supposed "twist" that it fails miserably at being an all-around good thriller. And I could go further but I'll just leave it at that because I don't feel like going into the stupid plot.

Shawn of the Dead is much better example of a low budget zombie film that worked...

As for what I last saw... Brothers Grimm. I went in with great expectations... but was sorely disappointed.

The special effects were laughable but I could have forgiven that if the story hadn't been such a mess. Gilliam needs to get a better story editor.

not a comic book fan, but have always respected the artwork that these graphic novelists are capable of. was a totally original film, unlike any i've seen. granted, it is very graphic and may not appeal to alot of people because of it. but this is a film you have to respect...very innovative. If you get it on DVD, I suggest you watch special features BEFORE watching the movie, so you can really appreciate how much this movie is like the actual graphic novels. most time in film, they come up short of the written work, not here..they surpassed it.

Shaun of the Dead

9/10

The best zombie movie I have seen. Who would have thought you could pull off a romantic zombie comedy?

feelgood 09-29-2005 09:06 PM

After the Sunset - 8/10

Good humour, lacking some real adventure element

Alexander - 9/10

Awesome movie, sad ending even thou, it was expected of any movies that is based on great leaders

Serenity - 10/10

I agree completely.

Wow. I actually was awestruck coming out of this. It's funny as hell, the effects are great, there are a ton of "Holy Shit!" moments. WOW.

guthmund 10-01-2005 01:36 PM

Make that the trifecta...

Serenity 10/10

It's so much darker than the series ever was, which was certainly an unusual direction, but seemed just....so right for the story. Just enough of the cute, the banter and the joking to keep it Firefly, but with a whole lot of grit mixed in to make it Serenity.

I hope this movie does spectacularly, as I would love to see a sequel....or twelve. :)

noodle 10-01-2005 01:51 PM

Flightplan. 3/10 Awful. Like I told my friend last night... "All I wanted was a little excitement for two hours. Now I want a refund."

I'm off to see Serenity in an hour. :D

Grasshopper Green 10-02-2005 10:52 AM

I just saw Alexander. It wasn't nearly as bad as everyone (including the girl at Blockbuster who said "Do you REALLY want to rent this??) made it out to be. It was a bit dry, and all the Macedonians had British accents (except Angelina Jolie, who I thought was actually pretty weak and I dunno WTF kind of accent she was supposed to have), but the visuals were really great, especially the battle with the elephants, and the story itself was interesting, if a bit drawn out. I'd say it was pretty average. 2.5/5 stars.

Corpse Bride - 7.5/10

Nice little animated movie/musical by Tim Burton, chock full of artistic detail and creativity. Need to see it about 5 more times to come to a final conclusion. So much to take in visually, too much really. Not the roller-coaster ride that was Burton's 'The Night Before Christmas' - that movie had better music, a better screenplay (CB is more subdued - much less frenetic) and more interesting characters. First impression: somewhat disappointed.

A History of Violence - 5/10

Big let down, coming from David Cronenberg - he of: The Brood, Rabid, The Fly, Naked Lunch, eXistenZ, etc, etc. Viggo Mortensen is just wrong wrong wrong for this movie. Scandanavian stoicism has no place in a David Cronenberg movie. Yes, it's a violent movie, but not Cronenberg-violent. Ok, it's a weird movie, but not Cronenberg-weird. The journey to the climax is so damn slow and plodding, you just want to yawn and pray for something cool to happen. The one bright spot in the movie is John Hurt's performance, which I would be willing to sit through the movie again just to see.

Kadath 10-03-2005 03:50 AM

House of Flying Daggers - 4.5/5

Beautiful colors, but not obsessively so, like in Hero. Fighting was more believable (for the most part) than the wirework in CT,HD (I'm fine with wirework, but I need some basis in reality, even if ninjas jumping from tree to tree is it) and the characters were compelling. Ending left me bereft.

5757 10-03-2005 11:47 AM

8/ 10

50 First Dates - I think it was excellent. I give it 8/ 10

It made me laugh and had the mushyness that girls love. Rob was great!! Drew Barrymore (sp?) is so cute! She played the part well!

My sister rented some dumb ass movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar - I don't remember the name of it. Anyway, she lives in Japan, does social work - finds that a woman she has been assigned to look after is haunted by a killer ghost. Wow. No. Not wow. Anyone know the name? It gets a 1 / 10. Sarah is hot. I'll give her a point for that.

Grasshopper Green 10-03-2005 03:51 PM

I saw The History of Violence last night. It was given 4 stars by the local paper (4 stars being the best), and I thought...YES! Finally a decent movie in this year of so many mediocre movies! Well, add this to the mediocre pile. The acting was pretty good, but the story wa drawn out and just...meh. 2.5/5.

Ganggreen 10-13-2005 11:14 AM

Kingdom of Heaven---story was ok, but film was too long and drug out.

Bacchanal 10-13-2005 06:29 PM

Audition

I'm trying to get as much Takashi Miike as I can ever since I saw Ichi The Killer. Audition starts and goes along pretty slow, but has a decent story. The last 15 or so minutes though are just outstanding. Watching a man who has had his tongue, ear, fingers and feet cut off eat someone else's vomit, and look like he's enjoying it is truly something to see if you have the stomach for it. I really can't describe how intense the last bit of this movie is. I was seriously blown away and disgusted by what I was seeing, but I couldn't look away.

shesus 10-13-2005 07:03 PM

Corpse Bride...well, I stayed awake and that says A LOT!! 5/5

I'm sure it's been reviewed but I just wanted to say that it was excellent. I enjoyed it more than The Nightmare Before Christmas although they can't really be compared. However, I think that Corpse Bride had more of a story instead of focusing on the 'new' media. I did cryat the end because I got so into it. When I was in the theater I was in a trance watching it. When I left the theater I was in a very relaxed state. Sounds like that might be kind of creepy, but what better world to get lost in than the world of Tim Burton! :)

albania 10-13-2005 07:03 PM

Transporter 2 - not a good movie, plot was not even remotely believable.

Kung fu hustle- great movie, ironically the plot is far more outrageous, but it works.

Citizen X- good movie, a thriller, never was on the big screen, i think either straight to video or a made for tv can't remember.

shesus 10-13-2005 07:08 PM

Oh yes...
If there are any Almodovar fan's out there and I am a huge one...stay away from The Flower of my Secret. I had no idea where it was going, not even at the end. Everyone has to have a flop and imo this was his :(

Strange Famous 10-15-2005 11:51 PM

NighT Watch

Clever idea (how the dead live), and visually wonderful. I did get a sense of it being a bit surface over feeling, but it was enjoyable enough

2.5/4

Johnny Pyro 10-16-2005 12:47 AM

Ice Age....ya I know, I was made to. It was cute. I can't believe I just said that!

Zotz 10-16-2005 02:02 PM

Just saw Serenity. Wow! Definitely two thumbs up, five stars, and 10/10. Joss did an awesome job in further developing some of the characters. I hope there is a sequel.

MichaelFarker 10-16-2005 07:00 PM

Serenity 8/10
It was really good. Plot, characters, dialogue, humor, effects were all perfect.
I just hated the cinematography outside of battle scenes. The battle scenes were extremely well done but the style of the rest of the film editing was annoying. Also, the romantic parts seemed flat. It needed more of what I loved about Shaun of the Dead. Overall it is worth seeing for most people and I'd watch it again.

spindles 10-16-2005 10:03 PM

I third the thumbs up for serenity - 8/10

Daoust 10-17-2005 02:46 AM

Sahara - Starring Matthew McCaughnahey (sp?) Penelope Cruz, Bill Macey, etc.

It doesn't matter who was in this piece of shit, it just matters that you never see it. As much a piece of garbage that I thought it was going to be. Absolute trash. Waste of time.

Crash:
really good movie. If something can make me talk about it for a few hrs, it's good. i might consider buying it now.
9/10

War Of The Worlds:
this movie followed the book perfectly. It didnt have any heros which made it work so much better than ID4(which was a rippoff of war of the world in the 1st place).
The thing that made it work i think was the fact that it looked real. you actualy saw ppl dying.
9.5/10 will buy this when it comes out(special edition ofcourse)

Corpse Bride:
hmm... as far as the story goes, this one was dissapointing. it was still enjoyable but it felt more like a kid's story. The singing really pissed me off.
Now let's talk about the animation: holly fuck! that was insane. i dont believe it was all stopmotion. some of it is too crazy to be.. if you like animated movie, go see this just for the stopmotion animations.
8/10 for the visuals
7/10 for the story

veruca 10-20-2005 05:34 PM

Elizabethtown...7/10

very cute, not what I was expecting...a little sadder than I thought it would be. But, overall a fun movie, not "cheesy romantic", but just romantic.

serlindsipity 10-26-2005 08:20 PM

Waking Life - 9/10

Rotoscoping is extremely visually appealing however can give you a bit of a headache. The philosophy is intriguing but A LOT of thoughts are thrown at you. best be up for listening carefully or youll miss most of the movie. Anti-climatic however good topic of discussion.

simonrex22 10-27-2005 06:57 AM

Batman Begins!!!!

What an awesome movie. Best Batman movie ever. Tim Burton did an amazing job and i hope he does a sequel. It was pure genious. Was totally not expecting Ra's Agul to be the villain. Scarecrow was awesome and the ending reference to the Joker was great too. I could go on and on about the good things in this movie.....10/10. Oh yeah, I was skeptical about Christian Bale, but he was perfect. The whole cast was great.

Fire 10-28-2005 11:39 PM

doom- Bad- very very very very bad

Rock cannot act..... at all....... He did not suck in the rundown, in fact that movie was enjoyable.... unfortunately that seems to have been an isolated incident..... the premise was not nearly as bad as i had feared, and the characters were actually believable and had some depth...unfortunately this disapears beneath a mountain of bad descisionmaking on the part of most everyone involved with the film... the gun cam idea was good, but unfortunately it is used for about a minute in the whole film, and in such a way that the godamn game was cooler to watch... the attempt at a plot twist was so poorly done that I actually wondered if the rock and reaper had somehow switched lines- rocks character personality went from cool badass to evil bastard in about three seconds, and it was done in such a way that it not only made no sense, but was completely devoid of all attempts to act out the transition... it was made worse by the fact that it was a neat concept, done in such a poor fashion that all coolness drained out and the void was filled up with a strange mixture of slow wittedness and sewage... and it goes downhill from there.....just dont see it, and if you must, pirate it... these people should not make money off this.....

MexicanOnABike 11-01-2005 08:52 PM

The Machinist

wow. this seemed like a random bad movie but it was very well made. christian bale is a good actor. Spoiler: i dunno about the ending though. it was well made but a bit too Fightclub for me.

9/10 suspense was killing me in the end!!

~Lucian~ 11-03-2005 04:14 PM

Arahan

A Korean urban martial arts flick. Awesome fights, cool humor (Main character obsessed with learning a 'palm blast'), and sweet story. Definitely recommended, I think it's being distributed by Eastern Eye Cinema

4.0/5.0

alleymary 11-03-2005 04:43 PM

Yeah I just saw Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
Ok, I've read the book and it really isnt that close to the story but it had its moments. My boyfriend even laughed and he thinks the movies I like are stupid and wierd.

noodle 11-03-2005 05:06 PM

I loved the Machinist, Mexicanonabike!

Saw2... eh.... 7/10. Nice plot twists, predictable mostly, really bad acting.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the original. Okay, so I just saw it for the first time. Hilarious! 9/10.
