Rate the last movie you watched.

Alright, so here's the plan...

If you watched a movie recently, let us know what you thought. Rate it whether you saw it in theaters, watched it on video, or saw it on TV. Rate it even if you've seen it several times. Hopefully some people will rate movies we don't see discussed too often.

Tonight after a rather unfulfilling experience with "Bend It Like Beckham," I decided to pull a DVD out of my collection that I don't sit down and watch too often. I grabbed Ghost World starring Thora Birch, Steve Buscemi, and Scarlett Johansson.

The movie starts off with two best friends graduating from high school. Both girls are kind of social misfits and have a pretty interesting way of viewing the world and finding entertainment. Enter Steve Buscemi: Buscemi's character is sort of a geeky music collector. He's sort of strange, but is a good guy. The two girls meet him after answering a personal ad, then standing him up. Before long, Thora Birch's character gets to know him better and begins hanging out with him regularly. Without giving the movie away for those who haven't seen it, I'll just say thing get pretty crazy from there on.

The movie is categorized as a comedy, but it's a very subtle kind of comedy. It's funny, but you almost feel bad for laughing, because it's pretty dramatic too. Another one of the things I enjoy about this movie is that it leaves room for the viewer to do some interpretation. Not everything is spelled out for you.

The acting is superb all around, and the story is enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this movie to my friends.

Tampopo

A comedic Japanese film about ramen noodles and other forms of food. The style imitates American Westerns. A number of surreal stories about food interupt the main plot about a noodle shop owner who wants to become the best, and a truck driver who wants to help her. There is an odd sex scene involving live shrimp and egg yolks.

The subtitling is pretty good.

Willard

A remake of the original starring Crispin Glover (Back to the Future, Charlies Angels) as Willard, a social misfit in a dead-end job, forced to look after his ailing mother. He develops a bond with rats which he uses to get back at his boss (R. Lee Ermey- Full Metal Jacket) who is constantly harassing him.

While the story could be considered slow, the acting was superb, especially from Glover. He created a character you feel for. I enjoyed it, even though it didn't follow the equation for a modern horror/drama film.

Believe it or not LXG. I quite enjoyed it aswell.

Aliens.

A sequel to the film Alien (I believe.. I still haven't seen Alien or Alien 3).

Ripley is found drifting through deep space and brought back to Earth after a 57 year hypersleep. Then some suckers send terraformers to LV426 while seemingly unaware that the wretched planet harbours flesh ripping aliens with acid for blood.

Earth responds by sending a squad of "ultimate super badasses" to rid the planet of all alien life. However things go astray as some in the landing party have different plans.

This movie features lots of aliens being blown to bits as well as all sorts of futuristic (yet believable) firepower, although slow to get going it picks up nicely and has some twists along the way.

A bad thing in the movie is that stupid little kid that Ripley found, I mean sure it would be admirable to include a kid in the script, but the casting was completely awful. That kid has the most stupidest annoying voice ever.

The good thing is Hudson, and his 80s era slang vocabulary, heavy usage of dude and check-it-out keep the mood bright and cheerful.

Overall, a good action movie, but flawed by the stupid little kid character and casting.

4/5

The Green Mile

Overall a pretty good movie but not as good as The Shawshank Redemption. I only bring up this comparison because they are both based off of stories by Steven King and they were both adapted for the screen, and directed by, Frank Darabont(not sure on spelling). The movie was pretty good, but got a little sketchy towards the end. I really enjoyed the movie though, its just that towards the end it was kind of a let down. Superb acting by everyone and a great score.

The Ring.

Interesting movie. Basically, watch a video tape and seven days later you die. A reporter starts investigating the death of a teen ager and gets caught up in the whole mess.

Saw it on cable over the weekend. The ending had a little bit of a twist which made it different than a lot of other more predictable storylines. Quite a few really cool looking visuals as well.

I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5.0

Ganguro 10-20-2003 10:52 AM

If you likied the Ring, you should check out the Ring series Ringu 0- Ringu:birthday.

Anywho.. the last movie i saw was Tampopo as well, and id give it a 4/5 tars.
Interesting concept, and great execution on behalf of the actors and director.I'm currently trying to track down a good clean dvd of "The Funeral" which was also writtten and directed by Juzo Itami.

Batman976, I also think Ghost World is a great film. It is one of the few movies I can watch every once in a while without getting sick of it.

The last movie I saw was Top Gun. This was my first time seeing it. I thought it was pretty bad. Directed by Tony Scott, didn't he die after making "Blow" or is that another Scott? Anyway, it was on VHS, so it had an old 1986 Diet Pepsi commercial in the beginning, the soda ejector didn't work, so he had to fly the jet upside down to let the gravity pour the Diet Pepsi from the bottle to his cup. The commercial was probably the best part of the movie. I was only 7 when it was released, but it seems like a good artifact of the whole Reagan/ Cold War era. Oh, I didn't watch it to the end. I wonder if Tom Cruise is successful or if he dies. Hmm

Baldrick 10-20-2003 02:32 PM

Good thread, Batman...

I Spy - the 2002 Eddie Murphy/Owen Wilson remake.

I put off watching this for as long as possible, but one of my wife's friends raved to her about it, so we finally threw it in. This "film" without a doubt joins Head of State, and Half Past Dead to complete the '02/'03 Holy Trinity of Crap.

Now, I have watched literally hundreds, if not thousands of movies in my life - and have never walked out of or away from any of them. I Spy damned near broke my streak. Eddie Murphy is unbearable as champion boxer Kelly Robinson, and Owen Wilson looked like he was just a distant shell putting in the time simply to collect a cheque. The story is horrible (will someone PLEASE help the brilliant Malcolm McDowell choose his roles), the script is embarassing, and the set designer and cinematographer should be barred from any film set from this point forward.

1/2 / **** - and the only reason I generously give it a half star is because Famke looked great. Shallow I know, but I was stretching for something nice to say! :)

mystmarimatt 10-20-2003 02:40 PM

"Runaway Jury", it's based off of a book by John Grisham. It was really good, really engaging storywise. There wasn't a lot of artistry in it, it's made purely to entertain, which is quite nice sometimes, when you don't want to have to think too hard or analyze a movie. overall, a 3.5/5

TrogDor 10-20-2003 03:01 PM

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre"

The basic plot is that 5 teenagers are "stranded" near a slaughter house and its surrounding houses. The teens encouter some bizzare people and witness their bizzare behaviour, but think nothing of it until they start dissapearing...

This was surprisingly good. From the previews it looks like your typcial hack and slash thriller, but it isnt. I havnt seen the first one, so I cant judge how it was compared to that. But this movie created an excellent portrayal of an insane family, was very suspensful, and did a cool little trick involving "real footage". Overall 4/5.

The Matrix: Reloaded

Saw it for the first time on DVD a few nights ago. It got far too much bad press. Not even close to a top 10 movie of all time, but The Matrix series doesn't deserve to be up there anyway. It's a straight action movie and a damn good one at that.

Batman976 10-20-2003 10:22 PM

Tonight I watched Waiting for Guffman starring Eugene Levy, Christopher Guest, et al. This film is a mockumentary directed by Christopher Guest dealing with a small town theater production.

The small town of Blaine, Missouri is celebrating it's 150th anniversary and part of the celebration is a production of Corky St. Clair's (Guest) original musical Red, White and Blaine. The cast seems to be cluelessly untalented, but become very excited when they learn that a talent scount named Mort Guffman is planning to fly down from New York to see the production.

The movie is very funny, but seems to fall a little short of Guest's other works such as This is Spinal tap and Best in Show (I haven't seen A Mighty Wind yet). Even still, if you're a fan of his work or of the mockumentary genre it's definately worth checking out... Especially if you've been involved in small time theater.

Kill Bill - 9/10 - I really loved this film.

This movie does the opposite of what you'd expect from any movie. Tarantino uses the entire film to take jabs at conventional filmography that, taken individually, would have seemed out of place. But, given that the entire movie was done that way, you can't wait to see what odd thing he'll pull next. This one is definitely an original...not a single style rule was followed, but it works...and works well.

Just fantastic. ;)

Kill Bill

Here's my warning if you haven't seen it yet: this film is extremely gory, and NOT for the squeamish.

It's fun gore, though. Done cartoonishly, and with a lot of humor. The violence actually gets SO over-the-top that it's hysterical. lurkette and I ended up lauging right out loud during most of the fight scenes later in the movie.

Like most Tarantino films, you spend the first half our figuring out what the hell is going on, the middle half hour piecing things together, and the last half hour enjoying the ride.

There's so much that's just plain WRONG in this film. From the Pussy Wagon to Gogo the Insane Japanese Schoolgirl.... It's a visual adventure and good, high-adrenaline fun from start to stop.

I give it 9 blood-spurting neck-stumps out of 10.

The other 3 endings suck just as bad...the 3rd one is done with storyboards and has a story change with how they were going to write the movie with the creators of the movie speaking the characters lines.

3/10, and only reason I gave it a 3 instead of 2 or 1 is because it did build up a little suspence at the beginning.

Boring movie and, *possible spoiler next*:

The way the guy decided on how to rescue the woman and the girl from the army camp was completely moronic.

Batman976 10-26-2003 11:01 PM

I just finished watching Changing Lanes. I was pretty disappointed. Dispite the fact that the movie isn't all that long, it seemed to drag on way too slowly. On top of that it was painfully obvious where the movie was headed and how it was going to end. Samuel L. Jackson was pretty good in his role of Doyle Gipson, but Ben Affleck didn't pull through (when does he ever?) with his character.

I stayed in last night and watched Cannibal: The Musical with the drunken director's commentary. I've seen the movie several times, but it had been a while since I'd watched it with the commentary track. It's definately a recommended view/listen if you're a fan of Matt & Trey. They still give some pretty interesting info on the movie (well, Matt hardly says anything...) but as the movie goes on, they just end up drunk and keep farting on each other and into the microphone.

last flick i saw was Laurel Canyon...

i was initially attracted by the cast of Frances McDormand and Christian Bale... (as well as Kate Beckinsale and Natascha McElhone) who never fail to give great performances. i mean, in the case of McDormand, there are actors who transform themselves with each new role, and there are others who convince you they donŽt have to... shes the second option... and i love her work. she seems to promise that if you stick with her character, you will be entertained, stirred or shaken.

i think the trouble with this flick is the story. it fails to make each character equally interesting. which in this case makes things hard to seriously.

but that doesnŽt really matter. its a sly comedy about erotic possibilities. this film depends on your expectations. i doubt youŽll be shaken, or stirred... but McDormand will leave you entertained.

First off, if you havn't seen this movie, you havn't lived yet. This movie has it all, action, adventure, love, and hundreds of catchy one liners. 6.5/10

Maybe a little harsh, but I really disliked the storytelling method. Rather than letting the plot unfold naturally and allowing the viewer to realize what was going on, monologues moved the story along. good ideas, but just executed badly. on a side note, the fights were mostly fantastic, but a movie that takes itself that seriously should be judged on more than action.

I agree with Eclipse with all the strange stuff the Tarantino was using in the film, it was spectacular, although I was chuckling at some of the stuff through out the movie.. hehe.. What it DID remind me of was a live action manga film >_< I will be waiting for the next one..

Cinema: Kill Bill 9/10. I like the movie a lot. Sad that there was a black/whote scene and that the ending was strange. Needed the end, cant wait until march.

Home: Dumb and dumberer - when Harry met Lloyd or something 4/10. Very low humor.

Derwood 11-04-2003 07:56 PM

Rewatched Matrix: Reloaded last night. Definitely a better movie the second time through. I don't see why so many trash on this movie....it's a total mind fuck, which is right up my alley. Any movie that presents so many unanswered questions has to be rated high.

Moobie 11-05-2003 08:44 AM

Down with Love (Ewan McGreggor, Renee Zelwegger)..... don't ask. 4/10 Never in a million years would I watch this movie by choice. Nevertheless visually it was a well constructed movie, decent, if not some what pointless plot, camp, actually not that horribly bad. The reason it rates so low is more because it seemed to be riding the coattails of Chicago (with it's remarkably annoying music) and the fact that what's her face is in both of them. And I really don't need to ever see Ben Kenobi singing ever again.

Replay value: -643/10 (I think there may have been a monkey in there somewhere.... I like monkeys.)

Predator 2

watched on TV last night, but im gonna go off the real movie and not the TV edited movie cuz ive seen it without all the shit cut out of it

Its a good sequel to Predator, which is one of the greatest action movies of all time if you ask me. The beginning scene in Predator 2 is like, freakin intense, its a violent shootout between the police and some jamaican gang. Its brutal. and of course the predator comes in and rips everyone apart. ahaha, the movie is damn good. Danny Glover back when he was a badass.

4/5. It would be perfect, except for the part where the predator goes crashing through the window of that old ladies bathroom in her apartment. and she just comes out of her bedroom going "i think i just heard something" that whole scene right there was kinda dumb, but everything else is tight

My roommate rented Legally Blonde 2 tonight, and for some reason I watched it with him (yes, him). I really wish I could say at least one good thing about this movie beside the fact that Reese Witherspoon is hot. Unfortunately, the entire time I was watching it, I was wishing I had a brick handy to bang my head into. I think this movie gave me cancer.

Just saw Matrix: Revolutions last night. There are a lot of really bad reviews out there for it. I wasn't disappointed in the story at all but I was minorly diappointed in how the story was told. I think they gave us too much too fast. The special effects are much better than The Matrix or Matrix: Reloaded. I enjoyed the fact that even though the movie wraps everything up quite well, it doesn't make all the answers abundantly clear.

3.5 out of 5

-1.5 for some rushed-along sappy scenes.

I put the trilogy in order from best to worst

The Matrix
Matrix: Reloaded
Matrix: Revolutions

I guess its to be expected, sequels usually subsequently get worse. As a whole I am pretty pleased with the entire trilogy, and the Animatrix too.

Hmmm, I haven't posted in this thread for a while. Anyway, I was watching The Iron Giant on Cartoon Network today. I actually really enjoy this movie. It's got a lot of heart.

For those of you who might not be familiar with it, it's an animated family film about a boy who becomes friends with a rather large robot. The movie takes place in 1958 and when the government begins an investigation leading to the Giant, our hero, Hogarth, takes it upon himself to save him.

Just because this is a family film doesn't mean you have to be a child to enjoy it. In fact, I think adults will like it just as much, if not more so, than children. There isn't any childish humor or stupid gags. There is just a cast of characters you can possibly relate to, and share in their adventure.

Not many who have seen the movie can find anything really bad to say about it, but it still seems a little underrated.

Master and Commander

8/10

A war movie set on a boat during the Napoleon wars. Great actors and breathtaking scenes.

Kostya 11-29-2003 07:54 PM

A Bronx Tale.

Written and directed by robert De Niro.

Good, not brilliant but very good.

Also you get to watch De Niro act as a peacefu bus driver, and do it well.

Obviously old Robert went and made this movie direct from Scorsese 101 though, the Goodfellas parallels never end.

Theaters: Love Actually - I adored this movie. It was so damn good. I'm most likely going to see it again. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD. Love love love. Go see it!

Rental: Down With Love - Not great, not horrible. If you go into it knowing that it'll be a bit campy and fun you won't be too disappointed.

Seriously people, go see Love Actually

Octopussy, for like the 10th time. It was on TV last night on TNNs Bond Marathon thing. I would give it 4/5 stars-but not because it is a good movie. It is Bond, which automatically knocks it up a few stars. There are all kind of holes in it, but it succeeds in being a good adventure. Besides, I have all kinds of memories of growing up watching Bond movies :D Not a really good movie, but hell, its James Bond.

O' Brother Where Art Thou? (5th+ time I've seen it)
6 of 5 stars ;)

sTghezzo 12-01-2003 11:05 AM

The Hulk.

3/5

There is no story really. Well there is, but they dont really go to it alot. They just stick with the Hulk and him tearing everything apart. The effect were like, the best and the worst at point. At points the animation got really cheesy, and in other point the Hulk you coulda swore looked real. And, i dont know, maybe use a hotter chick, heh.

Memento Special Edition with the easter egg to watch it chronologically (check out http://www.eeggs.com for more easter eggs for just about every movie)....
Some things work better all muxed ip, some other things shine chronologically. Still one damn fine move. I can't say what would have made it perfect, and I can't bring myself to call anything perfect, so 9/10 will have to do for this version.

On a related note, my girlfriend used to run a theater. They got Memento in for a one week run. Three months later, they finally stopped showing it.

Master and Commander

7/10 - Good movie but I was hoping for more battle scenes and action.

X2 -

4 out of 5 stars...
No need for exposition this time around... so the movie just blazes forth... a very good film.

FlorentinoAriza 12-02-2003 03:02 AM
