Rate the last movie you watched.
Alright, so here's the plan...
If you watched a movie recently, let us know what you thought. Rate it whether you saw it in theaters, watched it on video, or saw it on TV. Rate it even if you've seen it several times. Hopefully some people will rate movies we don't see discussed too often. Tonight after a rather unfulfilling experience with "Bend It Like Beckham," I decided to pull a DVD out of my collection that I don't sit down and watch too often. I grabbed Ghost World starring Thora Birch, Steve Buscemi, and Scarlett Johansson. The movie starts off with two best friends graduating from high school. Both girls are kind of social misfits and have a pretty interesting way of viewing the world and finding entertainment. Enter Steve Buscemi: Buscemi's character is sort of a geeky music collector. He's sort of strange, but is a good guy. The two girls meet him after answering a personal ad, then standing him up. Before long, Thora Birch's character gets to know him better and begins hanging out with him regularly. Without giving the movie away for those who haven't seen it, I'll just say thing get pretty crazy from there on. The movie is categorized as a comedy, but it's a very subtle kind of comedy. It's funny, but you almost feel bad for laughing, because it's pretty dramatic too. Another one of the things I enjoy about this movie is that it leaves room for the viewer to do some interpretation. Not everything is spelled out for you. The acting is superb all around, and the story is enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this movie to my friends. ****/**** |
Tampopo
A comedic Japanese film about ramen noodles and other forms of food. The style imitates American Westerns. A number of surreal stories about food interupt the main plot about a noodle shop owner who wants to become the best, and a truck driver who wants to help her. There is an odd sex scene involving live shrimp and egg yolks. The subtitling is pretty good. ***1/2 out of **** |
Willard
A remake of the original starring Crispin Glover (Back to the Future, Charlies Angels) as Willard, a social misfit in a dead-end job, forced to look after his ailing mother. He develops a bond with rats which he uses to get back at his boss (R. Lee Ermey- Full Metal Jacket) who is constantly harassing him. While the story could be considered slow, the acting was superb, especially from Glover. He created a character you feel for. I enjoyed it, even though it didn't follow the equation for a modern horror/drama film. *** out of **** |
Believe it or not LXG. I quite enjoyed it aswell.

Aliens.
A sequel to the film Alien (I believe.. I still haven't seen Alien or Alien 3). Ripley is found drifting through deep space and brought back to Earth after a 57 year hypersleep. Then some suckers send terraformers to LV426 while seemingly unaware that the wretched planet harbours flesh ripping aliens with acid for blood. Earth responds by sending a squad of "ultimate super badasses" to rid the planet of all alien life. However things go astray as some in the landing party have different plans. This movie features lots of aliens being blown to bits as well as all sorts of futuristic (yet believable) firepower, although slow to get going it picks up nicely and has some twists along the way. A bad thing in the movie is that stupid little kid that Ripley found, I mean sure it would be admirable to include a kid in the script, but the casting was completely awful. That kid has the most stupidest annoying voice ever. The good thing is Hudson, and his 80s era slang vocabulary, heavy usage of dude and check-it-out keep the mood bright and cheerful. Overall, a good action movie, but flawed by the stupid little kid character and casting. 4/5 |
The Green Mile
Overall a pretty good movie but not as good as The Shawshank Redemption. I only bring up this comparison because they are both based off of stories by Steven King and they were both adapted for the screen, and directed by, Frank Darabont(not sure on spelling). The movie was pretty good, but got a little sketchy towards the end. I really enjoyed the movie though, its just that towards the end it was kind of a let down. Superb acting by everyone and a great score. 4.0/5.0 |
The Ring.
Interesting movie. Basically, watch a video tape and seven days later you die. A reporter starts investigating the death of a teen ager and gets caught up in the whole mess. Saw it on cable over the weekend. The ending had a little bit of a twist which made it different than a lot of other more predictable storylines. Quite a few really cool looking visuals as well. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5.0 |
If you likied the Ring, you should check out the Ring series Ringu 0- Ringu:birthday.
Anywho.. the last movie i saw was Tampopo as well, and id give it a 4/5 tars. Interesting concept, and great execution on behalf of the actors and director.I'm currently trying to track down a good clean dvd of "The Funeral" which was also writtten and directed by Juzo Itami. |
Glad to see this thread is already taking off a little. Sounds like some good titles being reviewed. Keep 'em comin'!

Batman976, I also think Ghost World is a great film. It is one of the few movies I can watch every once in a while without getting sick of it.
The last movie I saw was Top Gun. This was my first time seeing it. I thought it was pretty bad. Directed by Tony Scott, didn't he die after making "Blow" or is that another Scott? Anyway, it was on VHS, so it had an old 1986 Diet Pepsi commercial in the beginning, the soda ejector didn't work, so he had to fly the jet upside down to let the gravity pour the Diet Pepsi from the bottle to his cup. The commercial was probably the best part of the movie. I was only 7 when it was released, but it seems like a good artifact of the whole Reagan/ Cold War era. Oh, I didn't watch it to the end. I wonder if Tom Cruise is successful or if he dies. Hmm  |
Good thread, Batman...
I Spy - the 2002 Eddie Murphy/Owen Wilson remake. I put off watching this for as long as possible, but one of my wife's friends raved to her about it, so we finally threw it in. This "film" without a doubt joins Head of State, and Half Past Dead to complete the '02/'03 Holy Trinity of Crap. Now, I have watched literally hundreds, if not thousands of movies in my life - and have never walked out of or away from any of them. I Spy damned near broke my streak. Eddie Murphy is unbearable as champion boxer Kelly Robinson, and Owen Wilson looked like he was just a distant shell putting in the time simply to collect a cheque. The story is horrible (will someone PLEASE help the brilliant Malcolm McDowell choose his roles), the script is embarassing, and the set designer and cinematographer should be barred from any film set from this point forward. 1/2 / **** - and the only reason I generously give it a half star is because Famke looked great. Shallow I know, but I was stretching for something nice to say! :) |
"Runaway Jury", it's based off of a book by John Grisham. It was really good, really engaging storywise. There wasn't a lot of artistry in it, it's made purely to entertain, which is quite nice sometimes, when you don't want to have to think too hard or analyze a movie. overall, a 3.5/5

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre"
The basic plot is that 5 teenagers are "stranded" near a slaughter house and its surrounding houses. The teens encouter some bizzare people and witness their bizzare behaviour, but think nothing of it until they start dissapearing... This was surprisingly good. From the previews it looks like your typcial hack and slash thriller, but it isnt. I havnt seen the first one, so I cant judge how it was compared to that. But this movie created an excellent portrayal of an insane family, was very suspensful, and did a cool little trick involving "real footage". Overall 4/5. |
Kill Bill, watched it 2 nights ago. 9 out of 10
|
The Matrix: Reloaded
Saw it for the first time on DVD a few nights ago. It got far too much bad press. Not even close to a top 10 movie of all time, but The Matrix series doesn't deserve to be up there anyway. It's a straight action movie and a damn good one at that. 4.5/5 |
Wrong Turn
There was stuff that didn't make sense, I won't say what, the ending was great, the acting was well acting, it didn't suck any. 6 buckets of Blood out of 10. |
Caddyshack
Good movie! I mean, classic! I mean, excellent! Oh yea, 4.9/5 |
Kill bill-7 outta 10(10 being best)

Tonight I watched Waiting for Guffman starring Eugene Levy, Christopher Guest, et al. This film is a mockumentary directed by Christopher Guest dealing with a small town theater production.
The small town of Blaine, Missouri is celebrating it's 150th anniversary and part of the celebration is a production of Corky St. Clair's (Guest) original musical Red, White and Blaine. The cast seems to be cluelessly untalented, but become very excited when they learn that a talent scount named Mort Guffman is planning to fly down from New York to see the production. The movie is very funny, but seems to fall a little short of Guest's other works such as This is Spinal tap and Best in Show (I haven't seen A Mighty Wind yet). Even still, if you're a fan of his work or of the mockumentary genre it's definately worth checking out... Especially if you've been involved in small time theater. ***/**** |
I just watched "Malibu's Most Wanted"
Let's see. I give it a 1 out of 5. I watched it with a friend and when it was over she said "Wow, that was a lot better than I expected." And I about died laughing. Then I felt bad becuase she was serious. Maybe it's a chic thing? I thought it sucked. Nothing in particular about it was bad, just ALL OF IT! |
Thora Birch got some tig ol bitties
Asta!! |
The last movie I watched was Memento. I'd seen it before, but I needed to watch it again to pick up on a lot of the things I'd missed the first time. Anyway, I think it's a great movie- really interesting. 4/5

Kill Bill. I give it 198/200 dismembered body parts.
|
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
I've wanted to see this film for ages and it was worth the wait. Brilliant story, brilliant acting, brilliant film. |
Spirited Away
Very strange Japanese animation film. It was good, but bloody hard to explain. It is worth seeing and beats the crap out of Hollywood animation films like Finding Nemo. |
the last movie I watched was friday the 13th part V. it was the third one in the series that I have seen, and I found it quite enjoyable, even without Jason.
4.1//5.0 and, arc101, yes, that's a dammed good movie. (what was hard to explain about it?) |

7/10 stars Good performances by the main characters. Funny, creepy, and touching throughout. |
Matrix Reloaded on DVD.
The story was pretty good but the effects didn't do anything for me I guess we've all been Matrixed to death. |
Theatre: Underworld
Personally, I loved it. I like dark movies though. Plus Kate Beckinsale didn't hurt either. ;) Home: Soldier Its actually one of Kurt Russel's better movies IMHO. I really liked it. Good story, decent effects. |

Kill Bill
7/10 ok movie, kida cheesy though. ok it was really cheesy. lots of action and gore made up for it |
Matrix Reloaded. First time I saw it I enjoyed it. Bought it the other day and turned it off. The talking and talking and talking.. gd.. get to the cool shit already..
9/10 the first time, 4/10 second.... |
Kill Bill - 9/10 - I really loved this film.
This movie does the opposite of what you'd expect from any movie. Tarantino uses the entire film to take jabs at conventional filmography that, taken individually, would have seemed out of place. But, given that the entire movie was done that way, you can't wait to see what odd thing he'll pull next. This one is definitely an original...not a single style rule was followed, but it works...and works well. Just fantastic. ;) |
