George of the Jungle 2 -- 0.5/5

The worst god damn movie I've ever had the displeasure of watching. I would rather saw off my cock with a butterknife.

(I watched it cause I was babysitting my girlfriends baby brother and sister with her, and they were diggin it.)

H12 05-01-2004 06:49 PM

Glad to see ya back, crow_daw.

The Duplex - 4.2/5

A movie I didn't expect much from, it brought me plenty of laughs and taught me that there are times when it's okay to hate old women.

Scarface - 6/10

Overhyped by today's "thug" culture. Overall not a terrible movie, but definitely too long....would've been better at or under 2 hours, but at 2 hours, 50 minutes, it was stretching it. Finding the comparisons to GTA: Vice City got me through most of it...

Men on Fire staring Denzel Washington

4.5/5

Derwood 05-05-2004 04:50 AM

Apocalypse Now Redux - 7/10

I had never seen the original, so I guess I couldn't say much as to the added scenes, but overall, the movie was way to long, grinding to a halt at the French Plantation. I understand that for psychological effect, the trip up the river has to feel long and boring, but at times it was, well, long and boring.

Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando were great, as was Robert Duvall as Kilgore. A super young Laurence Fishburne was also good.

I never like the book "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad, so I'm not surprised that a movie based on it didn't rank up there in my top movies of all time.

Godfather part1: all i can say is "i'll make you an offer you can't refuse: watch the movie or have your brain splattered on the tv."
hehe... Greatest mafia movie!
GodFather part2: Wow! great twist of evens... I like the flashbacks to the early godfather.(1901) Must see for the fan of mafia/mod/gangster movies.

I give them 100% and 95%.

I will post review for the 3rd one later this week... still didnt watch it.

The Goonies - a theater just had a midnight showing last weekend. Great to see it on the big screen once again.

-Ever- 05-08-2004 01:55 PM

Signs- 6/10 The story was really hard to believe. I feel that the writer/director almost knew that the story was weak, but they focused on making the audience jump. For this sake, it was good, so I give it a 6. I'd like to see it in surround sound though, I bet it would have been a better experience.

Blue Velvet- 8/10....so far. I'm yet to finish it, but what a trippy movie. I've probably got 20 minutes left and it's just nuts.

MexicanOnABike 05-08-2004 07:01 PM

Kill Bill Volume 2. I liked the 1st one alot more! I know i shouldnt be compairing them but it's a continuous story... too much talking and stupid parts, not enough action and comedy like in the 1st. I'll give it a 70%.
Will have to see it again to be sure... But i can only recomend it to those who saw the 1st movie and want to know the end.(as if u didnt know allready!)

Just finished "Lost in Translation" with Bill Murray (who I thought for about an hour - untill my boyfriend set me straight - was Jack Nicholson). So, that was the biggest waste of time ever. If someone wants to explain it to me, then they can. But, it started off slow, then with no real ending. No wrap up. Those artsy type ppl are gonna love it.

Nimbletoe 05-09-2004 11:13 PM

Man on Fire: 4.5 out of 5

I was really afraid this movie was going to suck. I really didn't want it to, and luckily, it didn't. It rocked, actually. Denzel put on another amazing performance, in fact, all acting was great. Dakota Fanning does an amazing job, she's going to have a bright future if she continues to pursue acting. It's hard to believe she isn't even 10. It just missed a 5 imo because it started to drag right before the end. It was also a tad on the predictable side. It wasn't so predictable that you were 100% sure of what was going to happen though.

Running Time

It's a little obscure so I'll give you a short snippet of what its about.

Running Time was filmed in black and white, in real time, and seemingly takes place in one continuous, fluid shot.

Bruce Campbell is god, so I give it 5/5 for novelty, and having Bruce

Short independent film about 2 students who shoot up their school. I loved the way it was filmed. I'd say this film cost next to nothing to make, but very interesting to watch.

"Girl with a Pearl Earring."

Scarlet Johansson is so talented and amazing in this. Too bad that the book was 10 times better (as often the case).
Interesting view of the Flemish school of painters using the 'camera obscure' and slice of life in another typically caste system. Needed some 'bump' if you know what I mean and I think you do....

Historically to those of us with fine art degrees, at least it had a taste of the period and insights worthy of study about paints and subjects. Give me the "Red Violin" instead though. Quite impressive and edgey. With a haunting sound track.

The Warriors:
Ol' School (1979) gang movie that takes place in new york. It's like watching any of those 80's beat-em-up's like Double Dragon in movie form. There's more and better fro's in that movie than any movie made in the past 25 years.

6/10 for the excessively bad acting though.

Apocalypse Now (Redux) gets 8/10 from me for a scintillating combination of incredible photography and vision from FFC; fabulous acting from Sheen that ought to have discouraged both Charlie and Emilio from ever treading the boards; and a masterful star-turn from an almost unrecognisable Brando, dominating wholly despite only showing up at the end.
The feel of this film is what really makes it. Sort of doom-laden ethereal.
Two points dropped as it does go on a bit.

The Magnificent Seven

Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson

AWESOME Western. It was done in the 60s before the genre changed to the "spaghetti westerns".

It's a touching and exciting story along the lines of "Seven Samurai" by Kurosawa. A small town in Mexico is terrorized by traveling bandits who take all their food every season, save what they need to survive. The plight of these villagers inspires Chris (Yul Brenner) to gather a group of hired guns to defend the small town from the large group of bandits. GREAT movie.

I saw Killing Zoe this weekend. No, worse, I bought the Killing Zoe DVD this weekend, then watched it. Here's what happened that fateful friday afternoon in Carrefour:

Roger Avary. Hmmn, heard of him. Tarantino's Exec. Producer, so he must have had some sort of positive influence. Of course, Jean-Hughes Anglade was class in Subway and Betty Blue (37°5 le matin), Julie Delpy's quite sweet...I saw Eric Stolz in Berwick upon Tweed's WHSmith once, so we're practically related. Ooh, look at the pretty box! Should be good, even at 25 Euros.

Wrong.

I don't think I've ever sat through such a rotten, needlessly and nastily violent, artless, selfconscious, lumbering-scripted, intravenous drug use-glamourising, misogynistic, lame-acted, come-to-Paris-twats film in all my born days. I was just over having a chuckle at the Paycheck review so thoughtfully provided by MahlerIsgod, when it struck me that in comparison with this putrid bowl of turgid, festering muck, that particular sci-fi aberration comes out looking like 2001...Or AI, at least.

The very worst part came halfway through the climactic heist scene when I realised to my utter horror that I'd seen the film before.

1/10, for Julie.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND: I can't say anything about this movie that would do it justice, it's brilliant and perfect a definate 5 out of 5... I haven't cried in a movie since ROTK so this was very much welcome.

THE PUNISHER: I've always been a big fan of the comic, loved Frank Castle to death, though the film took some liberties with his origin the film felt like a Punisher comic and was pulled off very well. Sure some of the shots were poor and the story is age-old but it's Frank Castle so I loved it.
