21 : What a fun and exciting whirlwind ride! It didn't hurt to have Jim Sturgess as the leading man along with a terrific soundtrack. I'm taking a point off for editing, although I'm not sure if it was a in-theater projector issue or bad editing. It still makes me wanna go to Vegas and count cards, so I'm giving it a 9.

I'd give it a 7/10 with a warning not to watch it if you looking to pick up your spirits. |
The Punisher - 8/10
Ignore the fact that this is supposed to be based on a comic book character. Once you take that out of the equation I think this is an awesome movie. Enjoyable from start to finish. And holy crap is Thomas Jane huge in this movie. |
I went on a movie binge this weekend, so:
Waxwork - 7/10 I'm a horror buff, so this was a serious pleasure to watch. Not only is it one big homage to all of the horror greats, but they even threw in a little Marquis de Sade to make my literary side tingle. Definitely one of the better B-movies from the '80s. Unfortunately, it's trumped by... Waxwork II: Lost in Time - 8/10 Basically takes the original and pumps it with more humor and a bigger budget, with a fun cameo by Bruce Campbell and some great performances by the villains, the main villain being the guy who played Karl in Die Hard. Big points for references to Nosferatu (which features a young Drew Barrymore), Dawn of the Dead, and Alien. Barry Lyndon - 9/10 A lesser known Kubrick gem. This baby is a three hour epic with some beautiful performances, cinematography, and costuming. It chronicles the rise of a young man through the classes of Britain during the reign of George II, and I really can't recommend it enough. Coming from an ADHD-riddled mind, it's really something that it didn't lose my attention. I love this film, and you should too. |
Enchanted 10/10 I don't think I have laughed this hard at a movie in a long time. The concept of this movie was fantastic and watching how they worked all the old fairy tale's into this "fairy tale meets reality" was a real joy
|
21 I give it an 8 because it was so much fun
This was a great film and a lot of fun. I know that I do not have the stamina and ability to count cards at this pace, but the idea is fascinating. Red could not stop obsessing over the fact that Jill had one blue eye and one brown eye. I never even noticed..... |
Unearthed (2007) - You can try to keep your sanity with the help of your robot friends with this one. Bad. Just bad. 2/10.

Where The Buffalo Roam - 8/10
Loosely (sometimes VERY loosely) base on the life and times of Hunter S. Thompson. Some of Bill Murray's finest stuff. |

There Will Be Blood 11/10 My son saw the previews for There Will Be Blood and decided he wanted to see it. He actually let me go with him! He's 19 and hasn't deigned to let me tag along with him for a couple of years now. He is quite the movie critic and he loved it. We both agreed that we had never seen a movie quite like this before. We also agreed that Daniel Day Lewis' performance was nothing short of awe inspiring. The up and comer, Paul Dano, was also excellent in this movie. |
yeah "Into the Wild" was a good movie. but yeah, I had the displeasure of watching that movie sitting next to my ex girlfriend, talk about an uneasy message between the 2 of us...
|
Vantage Point: 7.5/10 - I always liked movies with different stories that come together. The ending was pretty weak. Everything else was enjoyable.
|
The Holiday. 8/10
Harmless rom-com. Loved those. |
Flightplan - 6/10
it was interesting visually for some reason. the devices were a bit weak, as were the plot points, but it was still an interesting movie. |
Lost Highway: 5/10
This movie is rather confusing because one character morphs in to another character without an explanation then things get a little weird. The lead female character changes hair colors and has sex with the morphed characters and then there is the odd old dude with wild expression on his face who shows up at random times saying random words. I guess the high light of the movie is to see Patricia Arquette naked when she was in good shape. |
One of the 8 films to die for? Please!
Nightmare Man (2006) Absolutely horrible... just horrible! I was embarressed I even spent the time to rent one of these movies. I don't even think Mike Nelson could have made this one funny.http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...140_SX100_.jpg One of the 8 films to kill yourself during |
10,000 BC - 1/10
Easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life, I think Will said it best with "zzzzz/10" |
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - 9.5/10
Really fuckin good. It was so twisted and convoluted that I purposefully stopped trying to figure it out and just enjoyed it for its cinematic value. I couldn't give it a perfect 10 because .. really.. there is such thing as too much Robert Downey Jr. It's easier to handle when bad shit keeps happening to him. |
Walk Hard 9/10
One of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. I actually had to leave the room because I couldn't stop laughing at one of the scenes. |
juno 10/10
so funny. i love ellen page |
Man of the Year with Robin Williams in it.
Great kick ass movie. Funny, poignant, what he says is politically great.... I wish we truly could have someone like that run for president. 10/10 All Hail Tom Dobbs......... |
Into the wild - 10/10....... Wow... just wow... I can't remember the last time I felt that much emotion watching a movie...
Thanks for the insight into that one guys |
I have been reading the opinions of others on this movie and I digress.
Sweeney Todd (2007) - 3/10 - I was disappointed at this movie. I was excited like most but it just didn't sit right with me. The movie was predictable and the ending did not feel right. The only part I really laughed at was Mrs. Lovett's dream by the sea, that part tickled me. This was definitely not my favorite Burton flick. I am going to shower to get that off and watch some Batman, Beetlejuice, and Big Fish. |
The Deaths of Ian Stone (2007) - At first I was convinced I was watching They, you know, that movie Wes Craven shouldn't have presented. Still, keeping an open mind I found myself fascinated with these alternate worlds, and the character, Ian Stone dying to find himself in the new life. Where They left me with questions I wanted answers to, the story of Ian Stone's deaths had answers to questions I thought were more interesting left unanswered, a conundrum, I know, I can't have it both ways but that is what I thought. I give The Deaths of Ian Stone a 5 of 10. I will watch it again to see what I missed this time around.

This Is Spinal Tap
This is not my first viewing, nor even my fifth. An excellent film parodying the excesses and tribulations of the music industry. Also unbelievably quotable. "We've got armadillos in our trousers. It's really quite frightening." 9/10 |
RoboCop errrrly this morn on Encore Action.
4/5. |
Street Kings - 6.5/10
I had high hopes for this one and although it was alright and had some good parts, it just had something wrong with it. I don't know if its the kill everything to make it all right or just the cheesy one liners that seemed kind of awkward, but it just left a bad taste at some points during the movie. |
Eastern Promises - 8/10
Was going great, but things wrapped up too quickly and oddly. I could have easily lasted another hour. |

Vantage Point 5/10
This was a so-so flick. I like films made this way, but I really got tired of the audience groaning at the repetition. I love Fox on Lost, but I could not accept his character in this film. He was not believable. |
Martian Child - 7
So you know that John Cusack can do no wrong in my book. Add one adorable child and a flawed but saccharin sweet story that would have sucked if my man John didn't manage to carry the film. P.S. Teen rating: It was okay. The boy was adorable :) |
Lions for lambs
I don't know if it's that I find Tom Cruise creepy these days or that I felt like Redford was on a soapbox, not a fan of being preached to, but I wasn't all that thrilled with this movie. Streep was, as always, fantastic. I'll give it a 6/10. But firmly believe I'll watch it again as I think my opinion may change. On a side note I went to this movie with a Mexican lady, she picked the film. I found out afterwards that she'd seen it before. I think she was interested in seeing/hearing my take on it. The war, among other US activities around the world, are not real popular down here. She seemed pleasantly surprised to hear I think the Iraq war was and is the biggest bone headed move in US history. Her opinion was that Iraq and Afghanistan were one in the same. We debated a bit and I told her I didn't see it that way at all. I'm sure I didn't sway her opinion. She firmly believes the US should stop trying to be the worlds police and stop telling other countries what and how to do things. |
The 'New' Rambo..
Well, After seeing the previous films, I didn't know what to expect.. it's some years on now, A big doller sign just sprung to mind when I heard it was announced..shortly after seeing the last rocky movie. The film it self I'd give a generous 6/10, Yeah it's got lots of people getting shot and loosing various limbs, but rambos never say die attitude gets a bit dull and most of the killing is done by his mercenary pals. Overall, It's enjoyable if you wanna see shit get blown up, but it does leave alot to be desired! |
Not a very good run of movies lately...
The Painted Veil 6/10 eh. The Kite Runner 6/10 eh. (but, I liked the book) Perfume: The Story of a Murderer 7.5/10 The young man who starred as the perfumier was very believable. The set-up to the story was very engaging and aesthetically interesting, but ultimately the plot kind of withered and died about halfway through. re-watched recently: Mommie Dearest 5/10 (and that's only for Faye Dunaway's performance and her sexy shoes) I picked this up for $5 at the Wal-Mart last week while buying a kite for the Boo. I was amused to see a little animated clip - can't remember the name of it now - something about significant moments in gay history in which it explained how flannel shirts and mullets became popular amongst lesbians, lol. I guess they know what the typical audience for this movie is these days - Faye as Joan Crawford is monumentally drag-able, that's for sure. But all that aside, this movie really sucks, you know? It had been years and years since I'd seen it but...really, really not good. The Boo happened to walk in during the infamous 'wire hanger' scene, stood there for about 10 seconds and said 'she's nuts' and then walked back out. That was my favorite part of the movie. |
The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. 7/10
The last time I checked, doesn't an assassination involve one person unaware of their death? When the assassination does take place, it appears Jesse James knew he was going to die, but didn't really stop Robert Ford from his actions. The overall story was decent and the narration was pretty good, but it seems in the end Jesse James was rather depressed and ready to die. In The Bedroom-5/10 Basic story line is that a college kid falls in love with an unhappily married woman who is thinking of getting a divorce from abusive husband who then does something rather unfortunate to the college kid and then the entire 2 hours is spent watching the parents of college kid handle the outcome. This film could have been better, but it remained slow and uninteresting. |
Save The Last Dance - 7/10
Entertaining teen movie with some good themes. |
The Eye (Gin Kwai) - 6.5/10
I was curious about the American version but knew I'd like the original foreign version better. The Chinese version was more of a psychological thriller. Although the story's been done before, this version's main character was well created and acted. Silly ghost effects, but otherwise a good suspense build. |
The Ruins
Good overall for the movie but some acting was pretty average and the storyline could have been better. I wont go in details but it's about a couple of american kids(18-25) and 1 german dude going to visit some undiscovered ruins in the mayan jungle. when they get there, shit happens. It's horror, what did you expect?! I give it a weak 7 out of 10. Don't forget to check the link in my signature to know how I review my movies. |

The kite runner ,was awesome 10-10 ,made me sit and take a look at myself. |
Sin City - finally got around to watching it. I found it difficult to get into for the first half an hour or so, then got completely sucked in. Very stylish and noir. 9/10

Naked
I'm about to re-watch the Mike Leigh film Naked tonight starring David Thewlis. I'll go ahead and give it my 10/10 rating because I remember how phenomenal this film is...well, if you're into this sort of thing. David Thewlis is su-perb! Totally enchanting in his own fucked-up way. I love all of Mike Leigh's films, but this is by far my favorite. Incredible script! I'm really excited to sit down and watch it again, but a little dismayed to see that the copy from Netflix doesn't have subtitles...most of the characters have very thick accents and I was hoping to watch it with the subtitles. Oh well...
This is a movie I definitely need to own. They have a lot of clips on YouTube, here's the trailer and one of my favorite bits of dialogue: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ttq8JHdujCg&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ttq8JHdujCg&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Yzufbe3d8Ic&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Yzufbe3d8Ic&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> |
Vantage Point - 7/10 (yay for 99 cent theaters!)
Score for some of my favorite actors in it, but as another mentioned, Matthew Fox needs to stick to his Lost, go home and hope he receives many royalty checks. The story flew by with plenty of action that manages to pull you in, nailbiting and all. But somehow it felt like a really, really good episode of 24. Will I forever relate anything relating to presidents, traitors and terrorism to that show? :paranoid: |
Million Dollar Baby. 9.5/10
As close to the perfect movie as I have seen. I can't believe I put off watching it for so long. |
|
Return to House on Haunted Hill
I thought Jeffrey Combs might do the movie good. He didn't. Reanimator... you let me down. |
The Forbidden Kingdom - 8/10
This movie was a lot different then I expected. Like Kill Bill was a tribute to Japanese Animations, this movie is a tribute to old school kung fu/wushu movies. The action was phenomenal, and there were some really funny parts. Jackie Chan even brings back his Drunken Boxing fighting style. I recommend this movie for its action though. There's plenty of it and they usually last a good 10 minutes or so. |
88 Minutes - 4/10
Pacino can do much better than this. I really wanted to like it because the plot was intriguing, but the intensity seemed to wane towards the end of the film. It turned into a three-ring circus. |
Quote:
It sounds strange. In a lot of ways, it is strange. But it's a lot of fun, even if it's unbelievably cheesy sometimes. Quote:
I mean, I don't have any problem with you disliking the movie, but that particular complaint makes absolutely no sense. |
Abre Los Ojos - 8
This is the Spanish and original version of Vanilla Sky. It was virtually impossible to watch without comparing to the remake, which I've seen at least twice. I loved the lead actor in the original Spanish film, but I liked Cameron Diaz better as the "fatal attraction" in the English version. All in all, it was interesting to see what Amenabar changed for the American audience. |
Forbidden Kingdom 4/10
This movie is embarrassingly bad--even with Jackie Chan and Jet Li and two really beautiful girls in it. Some funny moments and good action, that's about it. Everything else horrible. |
Black Snake Moan 2/10
This was one of the worst movies I have seen in a long, long time. And I really try hard to avoid bad movies. I try to be as gracious as I can when reviewing these things, but this movie can only be honestly quantified as 'suckass.' We have: Christina Ricci - lost probably 25-30 pounds for this movie (and obviously had a boob job) and I'm assuming that her acting talent (which I admired very much in films like The Ice Storm, Pecker and The Opposite of Sex) went with them. In this film, instead of playing a trashy skank with depth and character, she's just playing a trashy skank...with big fake boobs. I am so disappointed. She needs a good spanking...and at least 15 of those pounds back. Samuel Jackson: playing a homey kind of black man in what looks to be a sharecropper's shack way out on the outskirts of town...oh, and he plays the blues. How novel. Justin Timberlake: oh man, BAD. Embarrasingly, uh, BAD. Like, I feel like writing a sympathy letter to his mother BAD. What were they thinking? I don't know, but the new Mark Wahlberg, he ain't. He's not even the new Donnie Wahlberg, for that matter. Best stick to bringing sexyback, Justin, and forget acting...forever. As for the movie itself, I don't know what the fuck it was trying to say or even what the story was, and not even going to attempt to get into it, 'cause it don't matter none. It just floors me what can be put on film these days and the people who will commit to it. Crazy world. |
pink flamingos- 9/10 just for the entertainment value.
i have no words to describe this movie other than shocking. look it up or something. |
Quote:
And for the record I love reading Hamlet, and can watch almost any version. :) |
Godzilla (American version) - 3/10
Holy crap this was bad. I saw it long ago and didn't mind it, but just saw it again and its BAD! Its about this retarded love story between some broad who doesn't deserve it and Ferris Bueller, and a big monster just happens to be running around the city. Avoid at all costs! If you want to see a good monster flick check out Destroy all Monsters. Pure awesomeness |
The Invasion - 5/10
There were rare moments of originality, a little flavor of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but not enough to make up for trying too hard and missing the boat entirely. Rent one of the earlier versions of BS instead. The only redeeming value were a couple of smaller roles played by some good actors I don't get to see often these days. Oh and I did enjoy watching Nicole Kidman getting her hands dirty and kickin' some arse. |
Baby Mama 10/10
This was a great, great film. Technically, there were no weird inconsistencies or little irritating things that you are expected to ignore. Personally, I laughed....a lot. And for that to happen it's got to be good. However, I did notice that not many in the younger crowd seemed to enjoy it as much. Therefore, if you are 30+, I think you'll like it. If you are under 30, not so sure. |
I just got back from a quadruple feature (at the theater from 2:50 to 11:45, including a brief trip to Chick-fil-a).
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - 7/10 As a fan of stoner comedies, this was pretty fun. Some of the humor fell flat, and it didn't really live up to White Castle, but the characters and general laid-back mood made up for it. Horton Hears a Who - 4/10 While the animation was pretty well done, and there were some fun, quirky moments, this still raped Dr. Seuss' cold, dead body. Leatherheads - 8/10 I don't think I've ever fell in love with the lighting of a movie before, but Clooney's use of some really old-fashioned techniques brought a charming antiquity to the film. The sharp dialogue and smooth (and in some cases, not so smooth) characters added plenty as well to an already charming story. Deception - 7/10 This one reminded me of Basic Instinct 2, in that it's one of those movies everyone is trashing but I still enjoyed, despite its flaws. The atmosphere and acting is top notch on all counts, but the predictable, by the numbers ending almost ruined what could have been a classic sexual thriller. Still, it was entertaining, and that was all I wanted. |
Harold and Kumar: EFGB - 9/10
I love it. They don't hold anything back in this one and Rob Corddry is great as an overzealous but idiotic bureaucrat. I laughed from the beginning to end. Could use more Niel Patrick Harris, though. |
Harold and Kumar 2: 8/10
I would have paid $10 just to see emo Harold for like 10 seconds. Funny, funny movie. |
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - 9/10
What a great movie! I downloaded it knowing nothing about it, only hearing that it is an excellent movie, and it did not let me down. What a great movie, some great irony as well. Why don't they make movies like this anymore? |
3:10 to Yuma - 8/10
Some good story in this one. Toward the end, it got a little frustrating because there were a lot of things that needed either internal dialogue or narration to communicate, but there was none. |
Movies watched this weekend:
Waiting for Guffman (reviewed here before, I believe) 10/10 His first time! Watching him guffaw - yez, I think he actually guffawed - was a huge treat. For those of you who don't know, the film is a mockucumentary about a show being put on to celebrate the sesquicentennial of Blaine, Missouri. I know I've posted this clip before - over on the funniest movie scenes thread - but I never get enough of it. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fjArVd-ElRs&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fjArVd-ElRs&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Best In Show 9/10 Another mockumentary (also by Christopher Guest with a nearly identical cast) this time on the subject of purebred dog shows. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HYLTqJMxmTY&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HYLTqJMxmTY&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Raging Bull 10/10 Probably reviewed here before, but again, it was mi amor's first time. The bio-pic of the life and times of middleweight boxer Jake LaMotta. Wish I could have found a good fight scene clip...they are so beautiful. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YiVOwxsa4OM&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YiVOwxsa4OM&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Lust, Caution by Ang Lee 10/10 This film is stunningly beautiful. The story of a young girl who gets caught up in the resistance movement in Japanese-occupied China. Plus, it has some of the hottest, most explicit sex scenes ever put down in a non-porn film. It has an NC-17 rating, which must explain why I didn't hear about it until P told me about it. But it is lovely. Very, very good. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4yzVZ09yTM4&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4yzVZ09yTM4&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> |

I've seen it at least a dozen times and it never fails to suck me in. It's undeniably Scorsese's masterpiece. How could I forget, we watched Manhattan, too. 10/10 Love this film. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1PLvQFoICok&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1PLvQFoICok&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> |
I don't recall seeing Raging Bull, I will have to watch it one of these days.
Infernal Affairs 8/10 If you liked The Departed, you should watch the original. Some say that it's much better than The Departed. I found it to be different on its own. Partly because it is subtitled so I found myself trying to pickup more nuances since it isn't as obvious as Departed. There are many similar scenes, but also they are stylistically different. |
Iron Man - 9/10
Holy crap! What an excellent movie! I was totally blown away by this. It lives up to the tomatoemeter, thats for damn sure! If you go see, make sure that you stay until after the credits. |
Quote:

Iron Man - 9/10 as well.
Also, I stayed after the credits and had a nerdgasm... in front of my mom.... |
Quote:
Cloverfield - 8.5/10 Watched it for the second time and still love it. I did not enjoy it as much as the first time though. This time around I felt that there was not enough monster, and too much crappy mush love story. But it was still a great movie. Thank goodness for my huge 5.1 home theater and 50 inch wide screen TV.... thats how movies are supposed to be watched! |
Bottle Rocket - 6/10
Wes Anderson is overrated. His movies cant hold my attention and they're only sparsely funny. |
Baby Mama - 6/10
While it had its moments, it was far from hold your side funny. Very predictable plot, and the whole thing was just ho-hum. Steve Martin was fantastic in it though, as were some of the other minor characters. All in all, I suppose I just expected a little more from someone who can write comedy like Tina Fey can. |
Yes, Iron Man certainly deserve its 9/10 rating. I love every minute of it. For a 2.5 hours movie, it went by rather quick. I want more and lots of it!!

Son of Rambow
8/10 Not a genre I'd usually watch; I was conned into it by a girl asking if I wanted to see "<quick whisper>sonof</whisper> Rambo!" over the phone, and since I missed it, I couldn't resist. I was a bit shocked when I entered the cinema, suffice to say. Still, it was a pretty good, feel-good movie. |
Iron Man - 9/10
This was one hell of a movie. Worth every penny. Very awesome. |
I'm going to buck the trend here...
I saw Iron Man this afternoon. I'd give it a 7/10. It was a fun popcorn flick and not much else, IMO. Then again...I'm not a fan of comics so I don't know if it followed the original story closely. |
Into The Night - 7/10
Fun ride with some great directors acting, back in the day. Thanks, mm, for that Hulu tip. |
Zombie Strippers
4/10 Terrible B movie, but it was pretty funny. |
Baby Mama - 6/10
As already said, very predictable, but the minor characters were great and Tina Fey is naturally a joy to watch (read: sexy comedienne). The overall humor quotient was enough for a steady stream of chuckles, and the flick managed two of my new favorite lines, ever: "My avatar's dressed like a hooker!" and "It feels like I'm shitting a knife!" |
Irreversible - 7/10
If you can get past its artsyness and the camera work (which is good, but not compatible with human equilibriums) then you have to contend with some pretty stark footage of some really gruesome acts. Was good, if you can withstand it. |
untraceable 6-10
vantage point 7-10 the cleaner 7-10 heroes wanted 6-10 |
Vantage Point 5/10
This might be a decent movie, I don't know. Why don't I know? Because who ever did the fucking sound editing decided explosions and crowd noise were much more important then little things like dialog. I'm sick of moves where when something blows up the concrete walls of my house shake, yet when someone's speaking I can't understand a word. And yes I tried every 'sound" setting on my system. I'd say about 20% of the movies I watch any more are like this. |
Tully, do you have a 5.1 system without a center speaker? I had that problem and my solution was to split the sound between my TV and the stereo system.
|
This is England 10/10
Um... Wow. Heart-wrenching, eye-opening, wonderfully acted, great music... I dont know what more there is to say about it. Watch it if you can. |
Quote:
I'm serious this seems to happen about 20% anymore. I'm all for movies where shit blows up, I'd just like to hear what people in the movie have to say about it. Maybe I should try my headphones? They work on planes? |
Tully that does sound like a center speaker problem. Try turning that one up manually and the rest down.
Also if you have individual speakers (ie. they didn't come in a set), try upgrading the center channel so its more dominant. |
Quote:
Maybe I need to purchase some that don't say Samsung on them? (Gawd, like I really need to bleed any more cash.) I must say most movies sound fine, just about one out of five really suck. |
A Mighty Heart 8/10
The story of the investigation into the kidnapping and eventual murder of WSJ reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan. This was a very respectful and non-exploitative rendering of an act of totally meaningless brutality. It was heartening to see how hard the US and Pakistani officials worked together to find him and heartbreaking to see how his death devastated them all - most especially, of course, his pregnant wife played pretty convincingly by Angelina Jolie. I have no criticism of her performance...she played it very safe, understated, which I think was a wise way to approach it. But the scene in which they tell her he is dead is agonizing. I can barely conceive of what that would be like. I did read an article written by Daniel Pearl's personal assistant who wasn't happy with either Pearl's or her own portrayal in the movie. And I understand why...both characters are very vaguely drawn. Her complaint was that Daniel Pearl was portrayed as kind of bland and gullible and I can't disagree with that. He kind of was portrayed that way. But overall it's a good film that tells a very compelling story. |
Iron Man - 4/5
Holy crap! I'm trying to remember the last time a Marvel movie didn't suck, and IM kicks ass. It isn't the best superhero movie of all time but it ranks near the top of the bunch. Good pacing, excellent effects, good story, and I had a hell of a good time! Oh and be sure to stick around after the credits, especially if you are a comic book fan. |
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale 2/10 (B movie rating, 4 blood drops out of 5)
Holy crap stay away from this if you like any quality at all. Now having put that aside, if you like B movies and don't mind devoting like 4 hours (thats how long this seemed) to a movie then I recommend this. It has ninjas, terrible acting, hot girls, shitty villain, really bad character names... I could go on forever. If you want a good laugh when you really should not be laughing then check it out... only try not to pay any money for it |
Juno - 6/10
Mediocre movie. Everyone seemed to think that this was such a great movie, but I found it to be very dry. I laughed during very few parts, and didn't think too much during the movie either. I don't really recommend this one to anyone. it gets a 6 for not being terrible, but not being great either Sweeney Tod - 2/10 Okay I fell asleep half way through this. But the audio was so fucked up on this I could not even enjoy it. I have 5.1 surround sound that is set up properly, just finished watching juno and then put this in. The music so so fucking loud and the voice so quiet I had to put subtitles on to even see what going on. That ruined the entire movie for me, and possibly put me to sleep as well. I also figured it might just be the speakers so I even turned them off and simply used the TV speakers, but that just made it sound worse. Anyone else have this problem? |
Iron Man - Easily a 9/10, if not a 10/10. My first impressions are without a doubt 10/10, but I have been out of touch with movies for many months, so it is quite possible my standards have fallen.

Iron Man
I think i was trying too hard to enjoy this movie. I will have to rewatch it when it gets to dvd. Overall this was an excellent movie especially for a marvel movie. And the ending AFTER the movie credits really made me happy!!! Now I know they have to make previews for people to see the movies but PLEASE STOP PUTTING ALLLLL THE POSSIBLE COOL SCENES IN YOUR PREVIEWS! I knew every part before they happened so it really bugged me. And: this is a fucking super-hero movie! he's gonna kick some ass and some people will die. that is why there's a PG13 rating. you're under 13? then get the fuck out of the cinema!! I had little kids all around me at an 8pm viewing and they asked questions to their parents at every scenes. "who's that? " why is he there" ... anyways, that ruinned part of the experience for me. so overall, if you like the iron man, Ultimate avengers, or marvel universe or you like superhero movies or you just want to see a good well made movie, then check this one out! My rating for 1st viewing is 8.5/10 |
I saw Ironman last night as well.
I'd go 6.5/10 on this movie. I think for me, and I've had this happen with other movies, so many people told me what a great movie this was I built it up to a point where my expectations were simply too high. I may watch it again when it hits DVD's. Maybe I'll see it in a different light. |
Like Water For Chocolate
10/10 |
Run, Fatboy, Run - Special/5
I say special because it stars Simon Pegg (from Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) and Hank Azaria. They are both fucking hilarious. Simon Pegg could make anything funny for me. So basically if I were to rate it without taking them into account I would probably be a 2/5. Standard rom-com fare. But dammit they really do make the movie better. So I'll up it to 3.5 out of 5. |
Lust, Caution - 8/10
I don't have any comments to add to this one. |
The Education of Little Tree 6/10
one of my favorite books of all time. The movie just couldn't do it justice |
Michael Clayton - 9/10
Took a little to get into it and understand what's going on, but it powered on through to the end. |
