District 9 - I was unimpressed. Good visual effects but lacked a consistent way of filming the story. 5/10. Spoiler: I really expected a stronger story line... but the movie reminded me of something my high school English teachers used to say about my essays, "Lots of ideas here, great potential, but no over all focus."
I changed my mind. 10/10. I just watched it again and what I first thought was a haphazard film, was just a lacking of Hollywood's forced conversations. Even good Hollywood movies, I know the conversations feel really staged and fake. This movie, the characters said things that were slightly wrong, or not in the best way. It actually made the movie more interesting to watch the second time around. |
Funny People 8/10
This is the movie Adam Sandler's been trying to make for years now. I truly enjoyed this flick. It had the perfect amount of dark comedy, serious moments, and flat out hilarity through most of it. I docked a couple points because the whole scene with the girl dragged out and kind of came off as filler. The Hangover 9/10 This is the movie everybody wishes Dude Where's My Car could've been! This movie was fucking hilarious. I don't think I really stopped laughing at any point. Zack Galiafanakus put the whole movie over the top. Spoiler: That picture of him getting his dick sucked by the housekeeping lady at the end had me laughing all the way home! Jen wants to go see this again tonight, and I could definitely watch it a few more times. |
My Neighbour Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki)
adamthewordking August 11th, 19:16 The main thing that struck me about this movie was the lack of what I would call a conventional narrative. I havent seen enough of Anime, or enough of Miyazaki's work to know if it is typical, to tell if this a trait of this genre - but it was a positive to me. The story certainy has a beginning. Two children (the spirited Satsuki and her younger sister Mei) move to the country with their father. The house is slightly spooky and strange, but the children seem delighted with this rather than upset. Both children are spirited, obedient, and bright.... and we soon learn that their mother is currently confined to a nearby hospital with an unknown condition. And the story develops on, the Totoro (a kind of elemental or spirit which seems to both be bound to and to embody the local forest) are introduced, a triplet of varying sizes - a baby, a child, and the giant - who seems to spend much of his time asleep and can only communicate by his smile, or his huge roar which summons the forest wind. A crisis point, of sorts, is reached, and then resolved - but at no point does the story feel dynamic or forced along a path - we merely follow a string of related scenes telling the story of the summer. The animation is tidy, and at times beautiful. The Totoro character is cute, and the girls story - their struggle to come to terms with their mothers illness and their contrasting wonder at the magical world of the Totoro - is engaging. Only one scene did I find both disturbing and out of place. Perhaps it says something about cultural differences - but near the start of th movie we see (although self consciously not explicitly) the girls (aged 4 and about 11) bathing naked with their absent minded professor father. Perhaps the director means to say something about innocence, about childhood - but it struck me as wierd, unsettling and gratutitous. Certainly no Western cartoon would feature such a scene - maybe the Director would say that this says more about the West and our manical fear of paedophilia or its signs: but all the same this part of the movie both said nothing to me and seemed to exist solely for the sake of showing the children almost naked. It seemed totally out of place with the magical, charming, tone of the film... it didnt spoil the movie for me - but as I said I found it out of place. All in all, this was a well made animation, and I would check out more of this director's work. 3/5 !!! |
District 9 - 10/10
I don't think a movie that long has gripped me that tightly for its entire length. I'm totally thrilled after seeing this movie. |
District 9 - 9, only because I fear a sequel
I was pleased with the depth that was taken with the characters of the aliens. That was impressive. Initially, what I could only see as aliens became, further into the film, individuals with unique charateristics and personalities. The fact that they were aliens came second to who they were and what they were doing. Highly successful. |
Great thread. I have just resumed my movie watching.
Angels and Demons : Quite predictable, if you have read Dan Brown's earlier works or seen Da Vinci Code. 2.5/5 The Hangover: I have seen better slapstick stuff. This one was somehow a sad attempt at it. 2/5 Also saw Occupation 101 but that's more of a documentary. |
(Anders Ronnow Klarlund's) Strings - 8/10
Cute movie, all the characters are stringed puppets, and the strings play an important role in the story, which was well told. |
District 9 - 10/10
I didn't know what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect what I got from this movie. The freshest and most brilliant handle of a classic theme; it hits you without even trying. My girls wanted to see it and I thought they might have been bored, but they loved it, too. Make sure any kids are over 16ish. Spoiler: Was I the only one who cried right before the end? |
The Hurt Locker - 10/10
Probably the most realistic war movie I've ever seen. I will make you sit up straight and pay attention. It gets so tense, you can't even blink. |
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard 10/10
What can I say? It's something I can relate to it and it's fucking hilarious. It's really just another stupid humor movie from people who are best known for it, but this one really went over the top and succeeded where the others did not. |
GI Joe: On the plus- hella cool shit blowing up, scorching hot chicks, 80s retro sentimental happy. On the minus- With the exception of Christopher Eccleston, none of the actors could act a damn-- or at least they weren't acting worth a damn, plot was nearly nonexistent, dialogue was arguably the worst I have ever heard. Not a total waste of 2 hours if you're a guy who played with GI Joes and/or watched the cartoon in the 80s, but not worth seeing twice. 4/10
Julie & Julia: This was a great little movie. Meryl Streep absulotely inhabited Julia Child...it was incredible to watch, she stole every scene she was in. And I am always happy to watch Amy Adams. She's a great actress, always puts in a good working day in her roles, and she's loveable as hell (with one of the world's perkiest asses). The rest of the cast was great also, and Nora Ephron did a surprisingly deft turn both at the screenplay and in the director's chair-- I have liked some of her other films, but in the past I've thought her a little heavy-handed as a director, and this was done with a good, sure touch. But overall, the real star of the film was the food: it looked great, it was treated well, and man, did I come away wanting to cook! 9/10 |
District 9 - I changed my mind. 10/10. I just watched it again and really thought the movie was well done. Originally, I felt the movie was haphazardly put together, but then I realized it was the conversations between characters that was throwing me. For so long, I have criticized main stream Hollywood movies for having painfully forced conversations. Even good movies, the interactions between characters feel unnaturally perfect, obviously staged. This movie lacked that, and in effect, upon second viewing, made the characters, even the aliens, feel more real.
|
District 9 - 7/10
I really didn't like the early part of the film. It felt like Murray from Flight of the Conchords doing an episode of Cops. The interviews just seemed odd and out of place. The plot was really good though as was the action. Overall, I enjoyed it. |
The Time Traveler's Wife 3/10
Poor editing disguised by the convenient time traveling aspect of this film. Journeyman was so much better. |
Time Traveler's Wife, the book, is supposed to be excellent (I've heard nothing but good things about it from a number of people, male and female). Time Traveler's Wife, the movie, is supposed to be terrible, and the people I know who read the book all got bad impressions based on the trailer. They say that an excellent book looks to have been watered down into a generic love movie with a time travel aspect thrown in. The written reviews have said much the same thing. Anyway, just saying if you like the concept you should read the book. I haven't yet, nor have I seen the movie, just figured I'd share what I've heard in discussions with others.
Anyway: Moon: 8.5/10 District 9: 8.5/10 The two best sci-fi movies of the year, hands-down. Done properly, I wouldn't actually mind a District 9 sequel (and Moon was made with it in mind to be the first of a trilogy). I fear a "real" budget could corrupt either film sequel though. What I'd really like to see is a well-made District 9 video game. If you've seen it, you know how awesome that could be. Holy fuck. |
I watched The Constant Gardener yesterday. The style, while beautiful at times, is a little overbearing for such a long film. It was a very interesting story, though, well told. Great performances. Beautiful photography. 8.5/10
|
District 9 - 9/10 - Great sci-fi flick. Lots of ppl don't know that Peter Jackson loves his blood and gore, well before he did Lord of the Rings. You'll see it in this movie. There were a few plot holes though which make it a 9 for me.
|
District 9 - 8/10. The story part was pretty awesome, effects and things were good.... My only complaint - why use hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment to make a movie feel like it was filmed with a Handicam?

Well, for those that enjoyed District 9 so much, I did go ahead and post the orginal short film that inspired the feature flick on Friday, so for those that have not yet seen it, and wish to consume the original, you need not search for it.
Can be found here: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...-subjects.html |
District 9 - 8/10
Very good movie. All aspects were well done, I just didn't like how Spoiler: they dragged out the main character's redemption. He didn't have to be a sniveling coward as long as he was. I felt this aspect was simply to make the movie a bit longer, and nothing else.. Other than that, an excellent film. |
The Haunting in Connecticut - 0/10
Yea you heard that right, 0!! This movie had absolutely nothing good in it, NOTHING!! Holy crap what a complete waste of time! If I did not have a friend to give blank looks to throughout this movie I would have just turned it off. And damn youz all for being able to see District 9!! I almost creamed my pants from the first time I saw the teaser. I hate not having theatres near me, good thing I am back in the city this weekend! |
Taking Chance 8-10
The International 7-10 |
Let the Right One In - 8.5/10
This is such a good movie. Please, do yourself a favor and watch it before you see the remake that's coming out next year. |
The Hurt Locker - 10/10
I actually saw this movie by accident. A friend got a bootleg that was supposed to be Transformers, but after maybe two minutes we figured out that it wasn't. He was mad that it wasn't what it was supposed to be, but I saw an opportunity and copied the movie from the disc before he returned it to the original seller. Anyway, the woman and I watched it the following night, and I couldn't take my eyes from the screen. It locked me in immediately, and didn't let go until almost the last scene. |
Adventureland 8/10
I went into this movie expecting something similar to Superbad but this movie is a completely different genre. It's light on the comedy and high on the nostalgia. A few of Jesse Eisenberg's scenes remind me of a young, less pathetic Woody Allen. There were a few things that I wish had been handled better. A few of the characters reactions to things seemed out of character and of course the romantic comedy relationship formula is in effect. The movie gets it'd job done though. |
Went to see District 9 today and I was impressed. Extremely well done. I thought the transformation of the main character was very effective - someone mentioned his redemption, but I don't the point was for him to be redeemed at all. He was naive and gullible - he didn't do his job with ill intent. What he went through was an awakening.
The effects, of course, were remarkable. Most important, was the way they handled 'the message.' They managed to impart the message without being overbearing in the least. Subtlety. That is the most charming and remarkable thing about this movie which could have so easily been heavy-handed. Which is funny considering how many people are, literally, blown to bits in it, lol. I liked it very much. I give it a, uh...a 9. |
G.I. Joe. -10/10. this movie was a platinum coated, laser polish turd. Every action scene in this movie was stolen from some where else that did them better. But it was shit ton of kick-splod. This movie sucked such massive ass that I am going to have to buy it.
|
Appaloosa ***/5
A good, if not great, western although Viggo Mortensen is fucking cool as hell. He and Ed Harris really do work well together and I'd love to see more from them after this and A History of Violence. |
The Great Buck Howard 7/10
Not that bad. Not great, but not bad. Colin Hanks is going to have as good a career as his dad without Bosom Buddys and Bachelor Party. |
I've been on a bit of a movie binge lately:
About a week ago I saw Public Enemies; I'd give it about a 7/10. I was pretty excited going in based on the historical setting and characters it was based on, even though I was expecting it to be fairly contrived. Overall it wasn't bad, but a little too long and just a little too lacking either in the dialogue or the action. Last night I watched Run Lola Run. Great movie, I'd give it a 9/10. It reminded me of the Butterfly Effect mixed with Killing Zoe... a fun and interesting watch for sure. Just out of curiosity has anybody here seen Inglorious Basterds yet? I'm supposed to be seeing that either tonight or tomorrow night. I love Quinton movies I've heard some mixed reviews about this one. |
Inglourious basterds:
Not bad, but not great That about sums it up, an above average movie, with the clear Tarantino style, but it goes up and down for immersion. Christoph Waltz is great as the SS Jew-Hunter Landa, no question about that. The first scene was great and did an excellent job of painting his professional character.µ It's his best work since Kill Bill, definitly, but, to steal a quote from the guardian: Quote:
|
District 9 10/10
Great fucking movie. Everybody else has already handled the reasons why. |
I love you man- funny movie. It was OK, I just wouldn't pay for it. 6/10
|
Quote:
9/10 Spoiler: I was reading more about this movie and it was shot in an actual slum where aliens had lived (in this case Zimbabweans). Also, the beginning scenes were all ad libbed and Wikus was literally pretending he was evicting people going door to door. They kept what worked and deleted what didn't. I think that really added to the realism feeling during the early scenes. |
Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo - 10/10 - Ah-friggin-dorable! Saw it with my sis and my friend (that's a girl) and it was amazing. It was shorter than other Miyazaki films, but still excellent.
|
Quote:
Oneechanbara--Also not a very good film, but it did have a hot chick in a bikini butchering waves of zombies with a katana, which of course meant I enjoyed it immensely. |
Spiderwick Chronicles 7/10
It was actually pretty good. The cgi was clean and the story wasnt bad. Its not a must see but if you got two hours to blow give it a viewing. |
(500) Days of Summer
9/10 I really liked it, and I think I was meant to watch it in this part of my life. Made some sense out of some things that have been rolling around in my noggin. Zooey Deschanel was adorable and I was surprised to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt all growed up! |
The Time Traveller's Wife: 5/10
Didn't do anything for me. While not bad, it wasn't good. Ok at best. It felt messy and inarticulate, like cramming too much in and failing to treat them sufficiently. Inglourious Basterds: 9/10 Kick ass dialogue. Loving the dark humor. Brad Pitt was awesome. Chritoph Waltz found a whole new legion of fans. Could be shorter though. The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard: 8/10 Funny movie. So many funny scenes in the movie. Has the same feel as Hang Over to me, but I liked this one more than Hang Over. And Will Ferrell owned every second he's in. |
District 9 - 10/10
'nuff said. |
Inglourious Basterds - ??/10
I liked it. I enjoyed it. Something is not sitting right with me though. The problem with Tarantino movies is the fact that you know you're watching a movie. Right when you've gotten yourself immersed, some really awkward song comes on, or a camera shot makes you tilt your head. Or the dialogue runs on to a point where you can see Tarantino's fingerprints all over it. This was a good movie none the less. |
Sunshine Cleaning: 8.5/10
This movie with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt is about two sisters who start a bio-hazard and trauma clean up business. It is subtly funny. It is short and it leaves a couple of loose ends which is why it loses points with me. |
State of Play 7/10
It's a political conspiracy theory with relevant subject matter. It was somewhat predictable in that you knew SOMETHING was going to happen even though you didn't specifically know what it was going to be. I think the whole genre is burdened with that problem though. The movie does pretty much follow the conspiracy formula but I actually liked Russel Crowe in this movie and Ben Affleck was a passable young congressman. I didn't even recognize Robin Wright Penn as Affleck's Wife in the movie it's been so long since I've seen her. |
The Three Amigos - 152846/10
One of my favorite movies that I hadn't seen in forever and almost forgot about. If you need any type of description, or have never seen it, I'm sorry for you. |
Frozen River - 7.5/10
Good story, good performances. I'm not quite sure what was missing but it could have been excellent. Watchmen - 6/10 Cinematography and lighting that was breathtaking at times, but the storyline was working too way hard to be something of epic proportions and it simply wasn't. |
Lost in La Mancha - 7/10
Documentary about Terry Gilliam's thwarted attempt at making a film version of Don Quixote starring Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp. I was kind of disappointed in this film only for the reason that it was hyped up as this brilliant and 'heartbreakingly hilarious' documentary and I found it to be neither. It was a passable entertainment and I am sure it would have been a great film (the film the docu is about) but for the fact that it was doomed from the start, lol. Worth watching if you are into moviemaking, but probably boring if you are not. |
District 9 - 9/10. This one surprised me because I thought it was going to be another politically correct tiresome hollywood morality play on people living in poverty, and maybe it was but it wasn't obnoxious about it. Simply put, this movie kicked major fookin ass. Excellent mainstream sci-fi flick with quite the creative premise (!), exciting plot twists, as well as great special effects and action scenes.
One thing stuck in my craw: Spoiler: Given the devastating superiority of the alien weapons and battle machines, why were the aliens the ones living in squalor and not the humans they obviously could have defeated in battle? |
I just watched One Week.
It's the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. The story was brilliantly written and acted out, and the cinematography is superb. I cried more than I'd like to admit. The hurt is perfect. Definitely contending for my #1 film. 10/10 |

Julie & Julia - I say it's good, but my friends say no.
I really liked this, but I've talked to two of my friends who saw it who were quite unimpressed. One said that the film had no umph. She cooks and runs a restaurant/catering service, so I thought she would like it. The other friend is a film buff whose opinion I respect. So, now I'm not so sure. Maybe I'm wrong, and I saw something that was not there. |
I haven't been in a theater since I saw Jurassic Park (10/10, BTW), so my review will be a few pages later than most. After watching it sit in my TiVo queue for over a month, I finally got around to watching Burn After Reading. I was greatly disappointed. Everything - from the writing to the acting to the directing - was mailed in. I expected more from the Coen brothers. The best thing I can say about it was that is was short (104 minutes).
2/10 |

Spoiler: Did he say what they were recovering from? Yes, a sequel would make sense given the ending. It did promise... |
One thing that isn't directly addressed in the movie (I don't think) that I read about the film before seeing it, was that the folks in the ship were not leaders - rather laborers - and I suppose they were waiting on a leader...which, I suppose, might have been the lead alien protagonist.
Also, I don't get the impression from the film, that the weapons they had were plentiful. |

The Last House on the Left - 6/10
Decent revenge movie. The rape scene was longer than I was comfortable with, but I'm sure that was the point. The last scene completely ruined the movie for me though. Stupid, stupid, stupid. |

The Watchmen (for the second time, this time at home on blu ray) 7.5/10
Not sure what I rated this before, but I still enjoyed this movie. And watching it at home on blue ray, WOW!! Talk about amazing visuals! I have never before seen a movie so crisp! One of my big problems with the movie before was the soundtrack was deafening in relation to the rest of what was going on, it also seemed out of place. I did not find this to be a problem at home, not sure if they tweaked the sound levels or if it was just my set up. But it seemed like a big improvement. |
Punisher - War Zone. 8/10 (as a serious movie, 2/10)
B movie goodness!! Horrible parkour, amazing deaths! Some of the worst accents you have ever heard! Skull punches and face smashes! Wow what a great movie to watch with friends and beer! Avoid at all costs if you do not like B movies, or are looking for something serious and meaningful. |
After reading the great reviews you TFPers wrote for The Hurt Locker, we decided to see it tonight. Unfortunately The Hurt Locker was no longer showing at our theater, after one week! I so envy you city dwellers who have numerous movie theaters at your fingertips to see whatever and whenever. However, tonight was the first showing for Moon so the night was not a loss.
Moon 9/10 Great, great film. Just as good as District 9, but in a different way. Would have had a 10, but I was left uncomfortable. |
Crank 2 9 out of fuckin 10.
This movie is so fucking hilarious. It's so ridiculously over the top. The language is fucking brilliant. They may have a record number of "Fuck you"s. If you enjoyed the first movie, definitely watch this one. |
Flags of Our Fathers - 8/10
I have nothing to say except I think I like Clint more as a director than as an actor, and I LOVE him as an actor... |
Calender Girls 9/10
Howl's Moving Castle 8.5/10 Paprika 8/10 |
Battle Royale 9/10
Great flick. With so many characters to start with, you really get to see a wide range of emotions and reactions to the situation. I definitely recommend checking it out before they end up remaking it for the US. |
Funny Games 8/10
Two nihilistic young men terrorize a family. Suspenseful, funny and slightly insane film. I could not take my eyes off the screen. Great pacing, acting, direction. There is toying with the audience which is either brilliant or pretentious, depending how you see it. I thought the manipulation was hilariously funny. |
Quote:
Anyway, Appaloosa - 6/10 Nothing remarkable at all outside of Jeremy Irons. Viggo was cool, Ed was alright. I loathe Renee Zellweger. |
Sunshine Cleaning 5/10
Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Alan Arkin. Too many loose ends. Very disappointing. The Secret Garden 7/10 My daughter recently finished the book. So, we rented the movie. She enjoyed it. I thought that it was fine. Certainly better than most children's films. |
I Love You, Man 7/10
Decently funny movies. There were parts where I laughed long and hard, but there were also a lot of parts where I didn't. Just the fact that Jason Segel and Lou Ferrigno are in it totally made it worth the watch for me, though! |
Brazil
8/10 and very appropriate for modern times. |
The hangover 8-10

Speak
Rating: 8/10 Summary (imdb): The teenager Melinda Sordino joins the high-school with a great feeling of rejection and becomes practically mute. Her school mates and friends call her "squealer", because she called the police during a summer party; she does not have communication with her mother, Joyce Sordino, who is workaholic and is permanently busy; and she has problem with a very radical teacher. She finds a great support with her art teacher Mr. Freeman and her school friend David Petrakis, and recalls her traumatic experience in the summer before school. Comment: I always like to watch films of actors/actresses before they became super well known due to a popular movie series, like Twilight. And for those of you, who are film fanatics, probably have seen Panic Room, in which you will have noticed that Kristen Stewart plays Jodi Foster’s diabetic daughter. Speak is a decent film, but only improves with her interpretation of the character. Mysterious Skin Rating: 8/10 Summary (imdb): In 1981, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the eight years old boy Neil McCormick is sexually abused by his pedophile baseball coach and his deranged and promiscuous mother does not pay attention. Meanwhile, the also eight years Brian Lackey awakes from a brief amnesia of four hours with a bleeding nose, but his negligent father does not pay attention to the event. Brian grows-up believing he had been abducted by aliens, while Neil grows-up as a hustler. When Brian is eighteen years old, he looks for and meets Neil, who discloses dark innermost secrets of their past. Comment: I was a bit uncomfortable when watching this film just because of the subject matter, but I was impressed with the Joseph Gordon Levitt performance. You may remember him in a hit television show called, Third Rock From The Sun, where he plays a quirky teenage alien, but I believe after this film (and many others, including Brick and The Lookout) he can be taken seriously as an actor. |
Departures-many layered story that made me laugh and cry.
Ponyo-Very sweet movie. Even the little kids in the audience enjoyed it! |
The Hangover may be the funniest movie I've ever seen. Outside of the first maybe 3-5 minutes, I was laughing almost nonstop.
10/10 |
I Love you Man - 4/10
Really was not funny, there were a few parts that had me laughing, but they were few and far between. I don't recommend this one, there are so many better comedies out there. |
Gamer---- 5/10
action packed, but all through the movie I kept thinking of " Running Man " entertaining with a feel good ending. |
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
Rating: 9/10 Summary: Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers, is appointed on a lark by the spineless governor of his state. He is reunited with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine. In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal. Comment: I am going to take you back to 1939 where films were in black and white and everyone was dressed in their best outfits just to go out for a walk. By the middle of the film, I was on the edge of my seat rooting for the main character to overcome all the obstacles that are thrown at him. Does he win in the end? Does he get the girl? I will not spoil it for you, but I enjoyed the film. |
9
7.5/10. I really wanted to give this movie a 10. I was whooping in the theaters when I saw the preview before Harry Potter (much to my wife's dismay). Much to MY dismay, despite being a very cool concept and very well animated, the story just can't quite take it the distance. Well worth seeing and I'll be buying it for sure, but you can really feel that they were stretching a short into a feature. There's just not quite enough material so what there is ends up feeling a little...stretched. |
District 9
I give it a 9 / 10. I can't say that I enjoyed it per say, because it's a brutal film, but I'm really glad I saw it. I guess i wasn't prepared for just how brutal a film it was. Blessings! Duskwynd |
9 5/10
Visually stunning. Great concept. Great characters. Too bad the story sucked balls. Everything happened way too fast, the climax was quite underwhelming, and the ending made no fucking sense... I was so very disappointed... ______ Adventureland 7/10 I really like the feel to this movie. Very real life funny. I enjoyed it quite a bit. ______ Watchmen 0/10 I finally saw it. I didn't like a single thing about it... |

I love you, Man - 4/10
I guess this is the curse of seeing tv stars on the big screen, but I can't see Jason Segel as someone else other than Marshall from HIMYM and Paul Rudd as Mike from Friends (ok, he's the exception). They both failed to convince me that they're someone else--especially Jason Segel (same thing with forgetting Sarah Marshall). There's some attempt at being funny, got a chuckle, but could've been a lot better with different actors, imo. I'd love to see John Cho in Paul Rudd's role. John's anger was more convincing in Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle than Paul in I love you, Man. |
Jennifer's Body 5/10
Summary: Nerdy, reserved bookworm Needy and arrogant, conceited cheerleader Jennifer are best friends, though they share little in common. They share even less in common when Jennifer mysteriously gains an appetite for human blood after a disastrous fire at a local bar. As Needy's male classmates are steadily killed off in gruesome attacks, the young girl must uncover the truth behind her friend's transformation and find a way to stop the bloodthirsty rampage before it reaches her own boyfriend Chip. Comment: I was expecting an in your face horror film similar to Drag Me To Hell, but what I received was a weak trendy Hollywood horror film that was mildly entertaining. I think Diablo Cody should leave the horror genre to people who actually know how to write a horror film. |
The Class 7/10
A French film about a diverse classroom of 13-15 year olds. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year. It held my attention, but it was a bit slow. |
let's see what I've missed since I last posted here:
District 9 Awesome movie! I definitely recommend this movie as a must see and must buy!! this will be a highly rewatchable movie in my collection! 9.5/10 Crank 2: high voltage I rented this last night because there was nothing else I wanted to see... I wish I had just downloaded this. It's an entertaining movie but nothing more. If you liked the 1st one, then follow up with this but if not, forget this movie. 6/10 Star Trek As much as I like reboot to dead or boring series like batman, I wasn't sure this one would work. There is so much backstory to this universe that without doing what was done, it would have been impossible. Great acting from almost everyone and I can see many many sequels to come. 8.5/10 - possibly higher on lower depending on multiple viewings. Inglorious Basterds WOW! tarantino is back with is usual style! awesome! I speak french so for me, this was awesome. Keep in mind the movie is set in 1941-44 france and a few characters speak ONLY french. It made it extremely enjoyable for me to watch. If you like any of his movies, check it out! but be ready for subtitles. a solid 9/10 Fan Boys bad movie without any good acting. They couldn't even get the costumes right. there was some good jokes but this movie is like 8years late! not recommended. 4/10 Watchmen This is even better on bluRay! If you have read the graphic novel of the same name, then this should be a no-brainer. GO SEE IT! GO RENT IT! GO BUY IT! and if you haven't, well this is by far the best stand-alone super-hero movie of all time. It is extremely watchable. I just wish they had made it longer. 10/10 and more that I can't remember for some reason. I'll try to keep up my reviews as usual. ---------- Post added at 12:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:01 PM ---------- Quote:

Slumdog Millionaire - 4/4 stars
This movie is definitely deserving of a best picture win. I can't think of anything I didn't like about it. Spoiler: Salim killing the slum lord that took advantage of the kids was one of the best moments in movie history. The soundtrack was also amazing. I really liked how all of the actors and actresses that played the same people through time actually felt and looked like they were the same people. |
9 - 6/10
The environment, the characters and all the visuals are top-notch (I especially liked the different types of vintage fabric each character was made out of...the detail was amazing), but yeah, the story suffered. Woefully short; they really crammed everything they could into an unusally short time span (79 minutes). Very rushed feel to it. This could have been an awesome movie. |
What happens in Vegas 7-10
Angels & Demons 8-10 |
Fight Club 9.5-10
Last Samurai 5-10 |
Observe and Report - 6/10
I think my expectations were too high for this one. It had a few laughs but overall Rogen's character was just creepy. |
Year One - 2/10
Typical annoying Jack Black crap. It was also really messy and not in a good way. |
Fine. Call me way behind the times, but just this week I saw Sling Blade for the first time. Ok, now I know what all the hub-bub was about. It was one of those Netflix instant view movies, so I started watching it and couldn't drag myself away. It's a fascinating but brooding story that slow-burns with an inevitable sense of dread toward the climax. The music by Daniel Lanois was perfectly suited to the Southern atmosphere and the emotional content.
I'd rate it 5/5. |
Paranormal Activity 10/10 -
My review is here: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...-activity.html |
two movies of note this week:
Doubt - 7.5/10 - A very good film with fine performances. Meryl Streep is amazing as always. And no, I don't think she was a monster. (;)) Her frailties were too close to the surface for that. The Visitor - 8/10 - I really enjoyed this poignant (if a little message-y) story about the way we treat illegal immigrants in post-9/11 America. With the added bonus of watching the very real and well-depicted journey to spiritual freedom of a good man locked down in an emotionally stunted prison of his own making for too long. |
Capitalism: A Love Story - 9/10
Michael Moore may have gone a little easy on Barack Obama, but everyone else is rightly exposed. If anyone is to find any weakness in the argument, it does not diminish the point - and that is all I needed. Great work. |
Kiss Me Kate 2/10
A 1953 film adaptation of a musical of the same name. Loosely based on the Taming of the Shrew starring Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson and Ann Miller. Awful. Just awful. |
Pandorum - 5/10. A very interesting premise for a sci-fi flick poorly implemented. Decent sets and moody spaceship atmospheres...cheesy dialogue and screenplay.

Zombieland
9/10 wow, unexpected funny as hell and a good show. really enjoyed it. some good scenes and just made me want to come home and play Left4Dead and pretend I was Woody Harelson. Dream Lover 7/10 Movie doesn't have a happy nice tied up ending. Very interesting for James Spader. Alphabet Killer 6/10 Also doesn't have a happy nice tied up ending. A bit disturbing and disjointed, but watched it because Eliza Dushku is in it. |
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly -- 2.5/4 stars
This movie has 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars (whose opinion I value highly) but man this movie sucks. The main character is boring, his life is boring, the film is filmed boringly, the cinematography is boring, his past life before he was paralyzed is boring. His story is great (a paralyzed man capable of only blinking his left eye), but the movie is just flat. I felt no emotion during the movie except for when his dad called him at the hospital. I was expecting a lot more from this movie. It is well made and has excellent acting so I will give it 2.5 stars which is right along the line of good and bad, but definitely on the bad side. |
I Can't Think Straight - 11/10 - it's an love story (but not a chick flick) great film, pulls at all the emotions.

:lol:I know...but at least it features Ann Miller's legs. |
We Own the Night - 7/10
In all honesty, I wasn't paying that much attention during some of this flick, but what I saw grabbed me a bit. I recorded it so I'll get another shot at it soon, but this is the initial score from what I noticed. |
