Just watched Ice Age 3. Great visual look, I expected the all too common evolutionary BS angle, good for a second sequel.

Most memorable for me was watching the 1 year old climb up the movie theatre stairs 2 or three times and holding said infant when she cried. The film ended when the mammoth baby started crying - might seen the real end eventually on DVD but in no rush.

The Wrestler - 9/10

I didn't care for the subject matter or even the film itself, but the Academy must've seen what I saw. The lead performances blew me away.

Thanks, hadn't seen the movie yet. Spoiler tags next time, please.

Terminator: Salvation 8/10

I thoroughly enjoyed this flick. I've always been a fan of the whole Terminator franchise. It's good to see something different out of it.

Also, Marcus Wright is the baddest ass character to ever come out of the series. Spoiler: I mean, he's a fucking cyborg! Hell yes!

The only problem I had with the flick was Christian Bales highly dramatic, almost cheesy overacting. It worked for Batman, but not for John Connor...

The Hangover 9/10

Saw this one for the second time, perhaps liked it even more. What a great comedy. I can't recall seeing a movie any other time that was funny from start to finish, most start to drag from 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through. Not so with this one! Great from start to finish, its even amazing in the credits!

Drag me to Hell 9/10

Holy shit! Great freaking movie!! Modern horror at its best by the master Raimi.

it was so romantic and cute! i laughed my butt off through the entire thing. i lvoed it and i'm definitely getting it on dvd. it was much better than the previews let on.

terminator 4 - 8/10 - he survived TWO helicopter crashes? i would NEVER get into a helicopter with john connor. EVER. it was kinda confusing and annoying at first. i really liked the homage to the original, the guns n roses, the "i'll be back" and the fight with the terminator, but overall, it was ok, good, not great.

year one - 9/10. who has two thumbs and liked this movie? (pointing to myself) this person. hilarious. just straight up funny. go see it, or i'll kill you where you stand (see the movie to get that joke)

The Reader

From NetFlix:
Quote:

Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes) reflects on the formative sexual relationship he had with older woman Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet, in a Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning role) as a young teenager in this poignant drama set in post-World War II Germany. The passionate affair ended when Hanna disappeared. But years later, Michael learns she's on trial for horrific Nazi war crimes. David Kross plays the teenage Michael in this film based on Bernhard Schlink's best-seller.
7/10 A good story. My wife expected it to be another Holocaust movie, but wound up liking it. There was a bit of skipping around between eras but not so much that you lose track or interest.

Kate Winslet gets naked several times. I like how she doesn't hide behind makeup, lighting or body doubles and has not seemingly resorted to plastic surgery to fit what people expect to see in movies. She looks very natural.

I watched this today and that's pretty much all there is to say about this flick. Great premise, horrible execution.

To be fair, I lost interest and all but stopped watching after about 20 minutes, though.

little_tippler 07-08-2009 11:29 PM

Revolutionary Road 8/10

This movie was interesting but flat at times. It reminded me of American Beauty at times (same director). It's set in the '50's and follows the life of a couple who want to lead a different life from the usual picket fence existence, and the difficulties they face in reality. The flatness of the movie adds to the feeling of impotence throughout. Visually there are a couple of strong scenes. The dialogue, while interesting in parts, is a little theatrical, contrived. The best part is the acting. Kate Winslet does very well in this flick, as does Leonardo Dicaprio. A far, far cry from Titanic. Spoiler: One particular scene in the movie, towards the end, is so raw and well acted, it grates on your skin appropriately. Hats off to the crazy guy character who dishes out some home truths. Overall, an interesting film, that to me requires a little more depth, Spoiler: and perhaps a less predictable finale.

Passengers

From Netflix:
Quote:

When therapist Claire Summers (Anne Hathaway) starts working with the surviving passengers of a plane crash, she discovers that their individual accounts of the tragedy differ significantly from the airline's official version. As Claire digs deeper for the truth, beyond the airline's sanitized statements, the survivors suddenly begin to vanish, leaving her swimming in a dark abyss of intrigue and conspiracy.
4/10 from me but my wife loved it. Everything was just too slow for my liking. Once things picked up, the ending became predictable. And once what was happening to the passengers became apparent, the film used the last 20 minutes to explain what we had figured out five minutes ago.

Knowing 2/10

I really wanted to like this movie. It had a lot of potential to be good, but, with all the plot holes, flawed logic, and bad dialogue, I found myself losing interest. Then they went and Spoiler: blamed it on aliens, and I just couldn't do it...

It gets 2 points because, at least, the special effects were cool and it was fairly aesthetically pleasing.

Last Chance Harvey 5/10

From NetFlix:
Quote:

Dustin Hoffman stars in this romantic dramedy as Harvey Shine, a struggling jingle writer who risks losing his job to attend his daughter's London wedding, only to discover he is not exactly welcome at the ceremony. While seeking refuge in the airport bar, Harvey meets a lonely statistician named Kate (Emma Thompson) and soon finds himself happily thrust into an unexpected romance. Hoffman and Thompson both picked up Golden Globe nominations for their roles
Not my kind of movie, but thought my wife would like it. I think it would have been better had someone else played Harvey. I don't who that someone would have been, but Hoffman ain't that swuft.

Some of it was hilariously funny, some of it was way too over the top. I didn't even want to see it so I guess it was better than expected.

mixedmedia 07-12-2009 04:40 AM

So, I finally watched Blood Diamond and I have to say, placing an action/adventure/romance plot on top of a backdrop of true and recent civil war replete with slaughter, dismemberment and child soldiering was really hard to stomach. For instance, I found it really hard to appreciate the tenderness of the father and son reunion that takes place between the lead characters when, seconds ago, hundreds of other little boys just like his son were blown up as 'cover' without so much as batting an eyelash. The more I think about the whole movie, the more disgusted I become. I appreciate that the movie was attempting, in a way, to illuminate the greed of the diamond industry and their culpability in enabling a civil war that killed thousands and left thousands more armless. But the passion would have been better served as a documentary. The film itself comes off as a modern day version of Mogambo.

Public Enemies: 6/10. I liked it but yes there is something missing from this movie. It seems like a big budget movie that was hastily put together with a big star name and released just to make a buck. While the shoot-out scenes are loud and exciting, the story/dialougue is not interesting or compelling.

Moon - 2009 - Sam Rockwell 10/10

There's a lot I could say about this movie but I doubt my ability to do it justice. Simply put, I 've seen very few science fiction movies of this caliber. I loved Moon because it didn't insult my common sense, it didn't require that I turn a blind eye to logical fallacies and it rejects the typical sci-fi formula of slick visuals before all else. Sam Rockwell's performance is flawless as is the films atmosphere.

Gonna go see it again tonight.

Moon - 89% @ Rotten Tomatoes

Transformers 2 & Terminator Salvation - 5/10

Not too bad but nothing worth seeing again.

El Cantante - 4/10

Entertaining and accurate enough (although told from Pucci's perspective) but some of the acting was downright terrible and the movie failed at capturing and conveying the magic that is Hector Lavoe's music. Mark Anthony and Jennifer Lopez were believable enough but the entire flick wasn't good enough.

Good Night And Good Luck - 9/10

I don't know why I waited so long to see this movie but it was great as I'm sure is documented well enough in this thread.

The International - 3/10

n/a

Public Enemies - 6/10

I've hadted Johhny Depp since Crybaby but Dillinger's story was too good to pass up on this flick. Sadly, it's Dillinger's story does more justice to the film than the film does in presenting the story. Christian Bale was a total let down with his terrible southern accent, many of Depp's lines were distractingly cheesy and where the movie shined - in the gun fight scenes - were partially ruined by hand-held digital cameras.

Harry Potter An The Half Blood Prince : 4/10

Man, I was so disappointed with this movie.

I haven't read any of the books, but I have seen all the other movies, and I would definitely rate this one my least favorite.

I just seemed to take forever for anything interesting to happen, and by the time it did, the movie was over. I kept looking at my watch to see how much longer the movie was.

There were also several scenes/plot points that had absolutely no relevance at all like Spoiler: the bridge destruction, and the torching of the Weasley house. I've also read/heard that there are several things that were left out/changed that are very important to the final book.

There were a couple of funny moments, but overall it was just really boring and non-cohesive.

Wow, this was really bad compared to the first one. Total over the top (in a bad way) cheese, and I love me some cheese.

All I really learned from this movie is that its hard to tell whats going on when the camera is ultra-zoomed on CGI robots, and Megan Fox has a hot body but horrible skin.

Dude, how dare you??? How dare you watch ANY movie without reading the books first. It's people like you that break my heart daily. You could have loved the HP series. The book is entirly filled with suspense and just like youd escribed, EVERYTHING happens at the end. With HP, you simply cannot wait a day after the book is released because someone WILL spoil the ending for you. Also, with HP, NOTHING is like the movie. Except maybe Danile Radcliffe. He looked exactly like that in my head when reading it. Otherwise everyone/everything else is different.

V for Vendetta - 7/10 Again, "It's starting to grow on me."
The devil wears Prada. - 6/10 Quite entertaining but I wouldn't pay for it.
Beerfest - 8/10 Again, it is very entertaining.
Superman returns 4/10 Again, quite missing in plot.

So you are telling me that for every single movie that you have seen that was based on a book that you read the book first? I find that hard to believe, because that's either a whole hell of a lot of reading or very little movie watching.

I actually think it is better to not have read the book version first when seeing a movie, because then you can base your enjoyment solely on it's merits as a film. I have seen many movies for which I have read the books, and it always causes nit-pickiness.

Lars and the Real Girl 8.5/10

quirky as the story is, I loved the way human interaction and relationships are at the fore of this movie, down to the tiniest gestures and details. A quiet movie with great intensity. It really makes you empathize with the characters. Great acting here, very real, awkward and raw.

Let the Right One In - 9.5/10

I was tempted to give this 10/10 but held back. Not sure why. This is an excellent, inspired film. It has vampires, but it's not a vampire movie. It follows the life of a child but it's soo not about children. It's about coming of age, it's about relationships, about loyalty and dedication, it's about telling a great story, and it's about breaking and questioning convention. From the actors to the plot to the photography, I have the highest respect for this movie. The dialogue, though sparse, says only what it is important to know. It has a sharpness that is riveting all throughout. I usually hate films where there is blood and gore, but this movie, while having some scenes of that kind, is able to execute them in such a beautiful, well thought out way, that you are actually waiting for the next piece of genius that these moments are, to occur. Amazing, could watch it over and over. And I never say that.

Return of the Living dead. 9/10

I caught this on AMC tonight. It was edited for TV so unfortunately I can only give it a 9/10. Usually I'd give it a 10. Tarman is still one of the coolest looking zombie from any movie. Too bad the sequels didn't live up to this one. I'm sure it'll always be one of my favorites.

Equilibrium - 9/10

Can't believe I'd never heard of this little sci-fi gem. Christian Bale and Taye Diggs both give strong performances in this slightly over the top but powerful film. It was highly recommended to me by two fellow film aficionados and I concur. Don't miss it.

Moon - 7.5/10
Excellent work by Sam Rockwell. He played his role(s) to a perfect pitch. You could even tell the differences in his posture. The story was uncomplicated to the point where you wondered why you were sitting through such a docile movie for such a simple tale. I definitely wanted more complexity. I wanted more attention to detail... I realize the budget wasn't too big, but how can they shoot a movie "on" the moon without paying SOME attention to gravity. I wanted all of the little kinks that I noticed in the beginning to come back in the end. Oh well. Still a good movie, but it leaves you feeling like it could have been a lot more. Also, Clint Mansell was a promising soundtrack composer when Pi came out, but now he seems very formulaic. Just like Requiem for a Dream; pick a ditty and repeat it over and over at different complexities.

Bacchanal 07-18-2009 02:26 PM

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas: 8/10

It started relatively slow, but both of the main boys in this movie seem to be fine actors for such a young age. I really liked the fact that he was having a tough time "getting" what his tutor was teaching him and his sister, and that she was so into it. The ending was... tough.

Man Bites Dog: 10/10

It isn't new at all, but I just saw it for the first time. I can't say enough good things about this movie. I loved it all the way through, from the main character's racism to his calm demeanor while doing the most heinous things. It isn't exactly what I expected it to be, but I'm not sure what I was expecting either. One way or another, this has become one of my favorites.

Blackthorn 07-18-2009 04:53 PM

I actually sat through the entire feature film titled "My Life In Ruins" staring Nia Vardalos. Nia V is the chick from My Big Fat Greek Wedding. This current title was HORRIBLE! I've never walked out of a movie but I would have had I not been with a woman who wanted nothing to do with leaving early. Re-gawt-damn-diculous really... waste of time and 2.5 hours of life I will never get back. Two thumbs down and don't waste your money...even on the DVD!

The last movie I saw was Lucio Fulci's 1980 classic Zombie. A friend is putting on a series of B-movies at midnight, in partnership with a local movie theater. The first show was the original Deathrace 2000.

To give you a sense of what we're dealing with, with Zombie....
This was by FAR the highest-budget scene in the film. I think they spent most of their FX budget on that rubber shark.

Excruciatingly bad. It was only made bearable by the fact that I was in a theater full of people in full zombie drag.

Punk.of.Ages 07-19-2009 10:56 AM

Fucking great story. Great fucking job by Clint Eastwood all around. Dragged a tiny bit...

I Love You, Beth Cooper 2/10

Just another teenage virgin story. There's really not that much going on in this movie at all. It did have a couple laughs, but you can just watch the trailer to see them all.

Year One 9/10

This movie is hilarious. Jack Black and Michael Cera make a GREAT comedic team. Seriously, the funniest movie I've seen in a long while.

KellyC 07-19-2009 02:33 PM

Twilight - 1/10
All the traditional notions a vampire is thrown out the window and in come a bunch of pussified vampires. Lots of teenage awkwardness and cheesy dialogue overload. I was right to walk out the theater the first time but the gf insists we finish it last night. It was made bearable by us cuddling and "happy ending" :D

Harry Potter: Half Blood Prince
7/10

It suffers from the same problem that the last two HP movies have. Trying to cram those books into a 2 1/2 hour movie is becoming too hard and it shows in HBP. The whole movie just seemed to be a disjointed mess. It really could, and should, have been chopped in half into two 2 hour movies.
It gets an extra point because Alan Rickman is still fucking awesome.

KellyC 07-19-2009 11:24 PM

Harry Potter: Half Blood Prince - 5/10

I had a really hard time getting into this movie. The whole time I was waiting with an "and thennnn?" feeling, hoping something would happen that would catch my interest. It fell flat for me. The ending was "meh" as well.

Halx 07-21-2009 10:24 AM

Powder Blue - 5/10
I didn't not like this movie, it just did nothing for me. The individual performances were nice, but the story was just a cheap knock-off of Crash. I admit that I only saw it to see Jessica Biel stripping and splashing her naked breasts with hot wax. I did get that. I liked it a lot. But the rest had no cohesion.

Hancock - 2.5/10
I should actually say: First half: 5/10, Second half: 0/10. This movie had SO MUCH potential on concept alone, but it lived up to almost NONE of it. Fucking horrible job by all parties involved.

Young People Fucking - 1/10
Maybe I am to blame. I assumed this was a documentary, based on the description and the name. Actually, its fiction of the same caliber that you get on Cinemax late at night.

That's it. I am done with Netflix's Watch Instantly service.

Korean movie, should be a B movie but it has A movie special effects... story was eh, expected more Dragon fights, but was still a neat movie. The extras on the DVD shed some great light on the director and how it was made, it wasn't all 100% CGI there were still miniatures and animatronics used.

Rear Window 8/10
For whatever reason this film has escaped me in the past, and I find myself a little disappointed that I didn't find it as awesome as it's been made out to be. It was still pretty good, but for "The Master Of Suspense"'s supposedly best film, the suspense didn't really seem to come until the last half hour or so, and there were absolutely no surprises whatsoever.

mixedmedia 07-27-2009 10:44 AM

supposedly, is right...I've never heard 'Rear Window' described as Hitchcock's best film.

Chilly McFreeze 07-27-2009 10:48 AM

Well it's his highest rated on IMDB, 16th in the top 250 (not the best guide in the world I know), and regardless of whether it's his best or not, it's pretty highly rated by most. I expected more of it, having seen and loved several of his other films.

mixedmedia 07-27-2009 11:06 AM

500 Days of Summer: 8/10

A delightful little film that plays with you expectatons about love stories. Some very funny bits, good acting and a solid premise. It loses some points for the end gag which is a little forced and unnecessary but certainly not enough to harm the experience.

Joseph Gordon-Lewitt has grown up a lot, looking a bit pike a young Heath Ledger in this movie. As a fan of 3rd rock and 10 things I Hate About You I was pleasantly surprised that I did not have any problem se him for this character instead of one o his previous iconic roles. Zooey, needless to say, looks fantastic, though she doesn't have to work very hard. Pretty much her standard quirky character.

The Hangover - 9/10
Incredible comedy. Every second of this movie was entertaining and every joke was funny. Good stuff.

The Haunting in Connecticut 8/10

A very good, creepy flick. Definitely one of the better horror movies I've seen lately. I was expecting it to scare the shit out of me, though, and it didn't.

Confessions of a Shopaholic - 5/10

Some funny moments but I can't get around the idea of shopping being an addiction. It also has the same feel as "The Devil Wears Prada." Mediocre acting, dialogue, plot. I'm not entirely convinced the relationship between the female and male lead.

500 Days of Summer 9/10

Pretty much agree with Frosstbyte's review, I really really really really like this movie. I saw a lot of myself in Tom's character, and I'd imagine so will a lot of people. Who's down for some karaoke at the Pirate Bar?

Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (Salò or the 120 Days of Sodom) 7.5/10

Quote:

Salò (the film's common abbreviation) occurs in the Republic of Salò, the Fascist rump state established in the Nazi-occupied portion of Italy in 1944. The story is in four segments loosely parallel to Dante's Inferno: the Anteinferno, the Circle of Manias, the Circle of Feces, and the Circle of Blood.

Four men of power, the Duke (Duc de Blangis), the Bishop, the Magistrate (Curval), and the President agree to marry each other's daughters as the first step in a debauched ritual. With the aid of several collaborator young men, they kidnap eighteen young men and women (nine of each sex), and take them to a palace near Marzabotto. Accompanying them are four middle-aged prostitutes, also collaborators, whose function in the debauchery will be to recount erotically arousing stories for the men of power, and who, in turn, will sadistically exploit their victims.

The story depicts the many days at the palace, during which the four men of power devise increasingly abhorrent tortures and humiliations for their own pleasure. A most infamous scene shows a young woman forced to eat the feces of the Duke; later, the other victims are presented a giant meal of human feces. At story's end, the victims who chose to not collaborate with their fascist tormentors are gruesomely murdered: scalping, branding, tongue and eyes cut out (see Franco Merli). The viewer is distanced from the vilest tortures, because they are viewed through binoculars. The film's final shot portrays the complacency, myopia, and desensitization of the masses: two young soldiers, who had witnessed and collaborated in all of the prior atrocities, dance a simple waltz together.
It wasn't terrible. It was graphic and gruesome, but nothing over the top. I wanted to see it to be shocked, and it did that, but only to a mild extent. Recommended if you're into watching movies strictly because they're hard to find or hard to watch, though I didn't have much trouble with either.

Heroes
Now I know this is not a movie but I have watched the full first session and half of the second in just this past week. My mom really liked heroes and I never watched. Now that I watched it I find that I really like the show. Me and my husband both like it and we never really like the same show unless it is on food network.

I had always read about this film but never watched it. Pasolini was an interesting person.

Forever Strong 10/10

From NetFlix:
Quote:

Rick (Sean Faris) is a star player on his dad's rugby team until a DUI lands him in a reformatory. While he's serving his sentence, tough rival coach Larry Gelwix (Gary Cole) allows him to play for his team, which helps Rick straighten up his act. Upon his release, however, Rick becomes a pariah to his former teammates and even his father when he refuses to divulge Gelwix's strategies. Sean Astin co-stars in this inspiring true story.
My NetFlix Queue got a little thin and I added this. Very good movie highlighting the importance of character. My wife even enjoyed it.

This is the only film of Pasolini's I've seen, and interesting is certainly one way of describing it. The woman hated it though, thought it was pointless... I actually got it pretty easily from Netflix if you're interested. No wait at all.

Mesrine: L'instinct de Mort (tr: Mesrine: the instinct of death) and L'Ennemi Public N. 1 (Public Enemy #1)

Mesrine is a two part movie about the life of French gangster Jacques Mesrine, with Vincent Cassel playing him.
Mesrine was not just your average gangster. He was known as The Man of 1000 faces, which is how he fooled people, and remained at large for so long:

http://static.guim.co.uk/Guardian/wo...67611-2203.jpg

When he robbed banks, he would quickly take care of the first one, then, with the police not far, he'd go across the street and rob the other bank.
He escaped from every prison he was incarcerated in, and even escaped in the middle of his own trial by planning it before his arrest.

The movie shows the gangster's early adulthood, when he was in the French-Algerian war, and his subsequent decision to not lead a regular civilian life. It then follows his first big crimes, his trip to Quebec and Arizona, with the law pursuing him, his return to France, and eventually the end of his "career".
Cassel does an excellent job. He's intense, charismatic, completely psychotic at times, and always dangerous.

The story alone is worth it. I don't understand how it's possible that I didn't know about this gangster a week ago. He's a legend.

I don't know what else to say about this film, except that you should see it. Wow.

I've seen it stoned, and it didn't do much to help. TBH, stoner humor isn't very funny. Of course, there's many weed jokes, and people being high, but it's nothing new or groundbreaking.
In my mind, this suffered from the same flaw as the Simpsons Movie. Too much action for what's supposed to be a comedy movie. If I want an action film, which often I do, I'll see an action flick.. and if it's cheesy enough, then being stoned will help. :D

The Great Buck Howard: 0/5

If you want to see John Malkovich play an egotistical, dickheaded, washed up magician in an unfunny, pointless, plotless film, then Buck Howard is for you.

It only gets such high marks as it's so different than the other Toho Kaiju movies.

Great Fritz Lang movie made in 1941. Solid story and acting and interesting to watch today and see the anti-Nazi sentiment and fear of the time.

mixedmedia 08-01-2009 05:39 AM

I watched The Prestige yesterday. finally. and while it was certainly entertaining, I found Christian Bale's and Scarlet Johanssen's accents to be rather flimsy and unconvincing. It kept taking me out of the story to marvel - couldn't they have gotten more/better coaching? Not good. Even Bowie seemed a more accomplished actor in comparison.
6/10

I also watched, You Can Count On Me. I enjoyed this one very much. Gave me an entirely new appreciation of Mark Ruffalo. Laura Linney I've always liked. And little Rory Culkin was excellent. Great film, great writing, great performances. Can't ask for much more than that in a Hollywood film.

Finally saw Wolverine (X-Men Origins) tonight - 5 / 10

Maybe I should've listened to the many complaints about this movie on the internet. Cool action sequences, and even though I haven't read many of the comics, I knew about a lot of the cameo characters and appreciated when they appeared. I didn't like how Wolverine's entire motivation for becoming Weapon X was because Spoiler: his brother Sabretooth supposedly killed his girl - it seemed really cliche.

The movie felt a lot like X-Men 3 - flat, empty story and characters thrown together just to get cool looking action sequences and sell lots of tickets.

powerclown 08-04-2009 09:44 AM

Fast Food Nation: 7/10.

Pretty decent movie, spotlighting (satirizing) the greed, cruelty and corruption of the corporations which process and supply the meat to fast food chains in America. Cute cameo by Avril Lavigne. My question to the director/author: your critique is all well and good but how else are you going to feed 250 million carnivorous human beings to keep them from killing and eating eachother?

biznatch 08-04-2009 10:04 AM

Lakeview Terrace was on Netflix Watch Instantly.
I thought what the hell, it doesn't look great, but Samuel Jackson screams in this movie (well, when does he not), so I'll give it a shot.

Not too bad I guess. From the trailers, I hadn't understood that ethnicity played a part in this movie. I just thought it'd be about the sheer horror of living next to a massive asshole who happened to be a cop. Turns out it's a racist massive asshole cop. And as he says so himself in the movie, "What are you gonna do, call the cops? I'll tell you who's shift it is." (paraphrase)

Since the couple that moves in next to him is interracial, that pushes his buttons, and the cop does everything he can to fuck with them.

It escalates and stuff. For me, it was very watchable. I couldn't help but be interested in what was next, what it would come to, and Samuel Jackson was perfectly creepy. The couple, however, isn't really likable.
Ending was a bit of a letdown, but there's not a thousand ways this thing can end. It just could have been done better.

The Last King of Scotland -- 3.5/4 stars

Forest Whitaker most definitely deserved the Oscar for his role in this movie. James McAvoy was great in it also but nothing like Whitaker.

The movie started off extremely strong but the last 1/4th of it was slightly less emotionally convincing. Great, great movie, very close to 4 star worthy. Had lots of memorable moments and I swear Whitaker is secretly a Ugandan considering how well he played that role and the accent.

Funny People.. 4.5/5

Had the best jewish joke I've heard in a long time. Adam Sandler at his best, Seth Rogan at his best and even Jonah Hill contributed very well. Not so serious movie with serious undertones.

ColonelSpecial 08-06-2009 11:53 PM

Milk: 9.5/10

This movie won two Oscars but deserved several more. The story is true to the actual story of the life of Harvey Milk. The director used stock footage from the 70s in several scenes. It worked out so well. The scenes Spoiler: between Sean Penn and James Franco were wonderful.. I have never been a huge fan of James Franco because he usually just plays brooding but he was excellent here.

Seven-Six-Two millimeter... Full Metal Jacket. 10/10

I try to notice something new every time I watch it and this time I did. It was a mistake in a line by Gunny Hartman. The scene where they're doing the obstacle course they're going down the monkey bars and he's yelling and says "It should take no less than 10 seconds to get through this section!" He should have said "it should take no more than 10 seconds.." That is assuming he's actually trying to make them go faster and not slower.. Not that it hurts the film, It just adds a little realism because sometimes words don't come out like you want em too.

Some funny moments, but average overall. I think it's the script, some really bad dialogue/lines in there...

The Soloist 7/10

From Netflix:
Quote:

This true-life drama tells the poignant tale of Los Angeles newspaper reporter Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), who discovers brilliant street musician Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), and the unique friendship that transforms both their lives. In helping his new friend deal with his demons, Steve ends up battling with his own. Joe Wright directs this inspiring drama based on the bestselling book by the real Lopez.
This movie wasn't bad, but I watched the deleted scenes, and felt it could have been better. A couple of the deleted scenes certainly needed deleted, but some of them would have better told the story.

Reese 08-08-2009 11:31 AM

Just Finished I Love You, Man. It's a 8/10, maybe better. :)

Comedies have recently been blessed with some great talent. It's actually surprising to see so many funny people that aren't SNL alumni making really good comedies. Paul Rudd is hilariously awkward in the movie. I cringe as he says something completely incomprehensible and facepalms as he walks out of the room.

Iran: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave - 8/10

A very good and timely thriller based upon the real-life exploits of a top iranian intelligence agent (Trazzakemonarckkoliac) who singlehandedly uncovers and snuffs out an Israeli plot to assassinate the Iranian President. Brilliant performances by Mohammed Guttamenhanamaiymeini and Henza Rentagafaiyeh.

Spirited Away 3/10
The animation was really cute, but the story line was hard weird to follow, there were a few times where one sentence that was to 'explain' stuff, with no back-up, follow-up, or nothing. it was just weird, we had to pause it more than once to just look at each other and give that 'wtf' face.

I love that movie. Hayao Miyazaki is amazing! (Though I could do without Porco Rosso (1992)).

so far, I still like Spirited away as my #1 because of the over the top characters and animation. But princess mononoke is definitely a great one! and Howl's moving castle is my gf's favorite. I liked it but there was something a bit odd about it. I dunno.

some parts were just weird, like, how did she know he was the dragon, why she start calling the witch 'grandma' i thought that was for the twin ...
yeah, just not the movie for me.

It had several laugh out loud moments, it was decent but the thing that killed it was lots of scenes that just went on too long. The funniest parts were old real home videos of adam sandler back in the day.

Josh Brolin and most of the cast do a good job at mimicking their real life counterparts. But in the end, the life of George W Bush is just no that interesting.

Watched "I love you, Man" on DVD last night. Kinda funny in parts, but a waste of time, for the most part. Wish I had my two hours back. Only thing that made it watchable, was the 5 beers I had during the movie.
