Just wanted to say - well done MonomAnny on getting post #2500 in this thread. :)
I'll settle for reply #2500. |
Body Double 7/10
I hadn't seen it uncut since it was released. Imperfect and kitschy, but a fun and sometimes suspenseful ride with Deborah Shelton and Melanie Griffith in a sexy scene or two. |
The Exorcist - 9/10
This is such a good movie. The makeup in it is insane, even today its still very frightening. I couldn't imagine seeing this when it came out, that must have been truly frightening Poltergeist - 6/10 As far as old horror movies go its still not too bad. Some pretty cheesy effects in it. But nothing will ever take away from the sheer awesomeness of building a community on top of an old Indian burial ground. |
Closer. Excellent movie, very well directed and some incredible acting. A nice contrast to the usual saccharine Hollywood crap. 9/10
|
American Gangster - 8/10
Expected outcome, but another good role for Denzel Washington. Still not to fond of Russel Crowe though.. Seen the movie done a few years ago, I think it starred Johnny Depp and was called Blow.. Both are worth worthing imo :) |
Little Children 7/10
Interesting movie, I found it reminiscent of Todd Soldenz's Happiness even commented on how it could be Happiness 2: Electric Boogaloo. Slice of life of mother/daughter & father/son, and how they meet on the playground and are bored of their respective relationships. |
There Will Be Blood 9/10
Goes to show that Daniel Day Lewis is still reaching the height of his powers. An overall good story that reminds me of turn-of-the-century novels. A good character study on greed and morality. |
Nothing new, but I bought a Alejandro Jodorowsky box set because a friend of mine loaned me The Holy Mountain. So, that and El Topo are the most recent movies I've seen and I love them both immensely. Highly, highly recommended if you're into the weird artsy 70's cinema. I absolutely LOVE The Holy Mountain!!
I've still yet to watch Fando Y Lis and La Cravate. They both came in the set, but I haven't got around to those two yet. |

Kick ass movie. Saw it on a plane, never heard of it. Great characters great story line. I just caught "The Bucket List" 8/10 Good, real good. Can't remember the last time I saw Freeman in something I didn't like. Side note- Does he narrate every movie he's in? |

PS I love you 7-10.

Untraceable 7/10
I'm a sucker for good suspense (not scary, though) and this movie packs it in with Diane Lane as a bonus. I would have rated it an 8 but for a couple of scenes of somewhat graphic torture that I had to turn away from. |
Michael Clayton 7/10
This movie attempted to be like Russel Crowe's movie "The Insider", but fell a bit short. Still a decent movie but I think Clooney fans will like it more than non-Clooney people. ------------------------------------------------ War 3/10 I don't know what it is about Jason Statham movies. I just can't seem to stay awake during them. ------------------------------------------------ We Own The Night 7/10 I found the story to be a bit choppy and disjointed. None of the characters were a big stretch for the actors (Phoenix,Wahlberg, Duvall and Mendes). Gave it a couple extra points just because Eva Mendes was in it. ------------------------------------------------- The Brave One 7/10 This was better than I thought it would be. Jodie Foster did a decent job as the assault victim turned vigilante. ------------------------------------------------- Definately, Maybe 6/10 The reviews say its a rip-off of "How I Met Your Mother". I wouldn't know because I've never seen the TV show. Its a "chick flick" but it was watchable. |
Watched Bruce Almighty again. Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Aniston all on decent form. 7/10
|

I watched the Martian Child on the plane back from Vegas yesterday. I can't say when I've enjoyed John Cussack in a dramatic role more. The kid was good without being annoying, and Amanda Peet and Joan Cussack were good too. 7/10. |
I love coming through here and finding new movies to watch or not watch. I'm like MixedMedia, I've seen a lot, but not kept up with rating.
I've had quite a mixed-bag of movies lately. Wickerman - 4/10 Entertaining, but stupid....really stupid. It's one of those movies that you watch and think, "Hmmm, this is pretty lame." Then you think about it and think, "Wow! That was a really stupid movie." For Your Consideration - I fell asleep. Very disappointed. It was either brilliant because the characters were so shallow and it was a true portrayal of Hollywood. Or it was horrid because I didn't give a shit about any of them or what happened. I'm bummed because I generally love Guest and crowd. :( There Will Be Blood - 9/10 Brilliant movie. There was no dialogue in the first 10 minutes or so, but the acting is so good, you are engrossed at once. The main character has no soul and this makes the movie even more entertaining. I was a bit confused about the whole preacher brother scenario. After some digging around, we found that the actor bailed or something, so it makes sense now. The comparison to Citizen Kane is well earned. One of the best and definitely a No Country for Old Men competitor. The Death of the Electric Car - 7/10 Great documentary, especially with the price of oil rising. The End of Suburbia - 8/10 Quite an eye-opener and another motivation (like we need any) to get the hell out of suburbia and back to the city. Word Wars - 8/10 I'm a sucker for documentaries about dorky people. It was a good look into the NY Times crossword puzzles, those who do them, and the annual competition of the dorks. The Lodger - 8/10 Wasn't expecting the movie to be silent, but it was very good. One of Hitchcock's earlier films that lives up to his signature twist. It's a definite classic. Paris, Je t'aime - 8/10 A perfect movie for ADD people. Twenty 5-minute shorts focusing on Paris. There was something for everyone in it. This project had many big names involved (Coen brothers, Maggie Gyllenhall, Wes Craven, Natalie Portman, Elijah Wood to name a few). It is a movie that can be seen multiple times because I'm sure you'd see new things each time. I particularly enjoyed the visuals in the vampire short, the story line of the short with Ludivine Sagnier and Nick Nolte, and the Coen brothers' short was great using one of their stand-by actors, Steve Buscemi. I found it to be better than Coffee and Cigarettes which was a similar film. The Life of Birds - 9/10 I rented this to show my class since we are studying birds this quarter. I sat down to watch it before I took it into the school because first graders are not going to sit through a 4-hour documentary. However, I did and I loved every minute of it. Nature interests me and this was filmed very well. The kids also loved it and even got a bit upset when I fast forwarded through most of it. They were captivated by it. I can't even get them to be quiet during a 30-minute Dr Seuss cartoon, but we sat and watched this for over an hour. |

My Family 9/10
Older film, 1995 I think. Well put together family drama following several generations of Latinos. I read one review after seeing it that called it either an epic or a saga, not sure what makes that distinction. It does run kind of long but I was never bored. Stars Edward James Olmos, Jennifer Lopez and Jimmy Smits. A Life Less Ordinary 8/10 Very, very different movie. Maybe I was just I the mood for something other then Good cop/Bad cop, two buddy rouge cops take on the system and win, person takes on the world and wins etc... All too often I watch something only to get the feeling "I've seen this before," almost like I know what going to happen next. It was nice to see a movie where I kept wondering what's coming next. |
Juno - 8/10
|
Live Free or Die Hard - 7/10
Very entertaining. If you can get past all the bullshit hacking into every system known to man crap. |
Weird Science. So bad, it's bad. 3/10
|
Quote:
I love this movie more each time I watch it. They did such a fantastic job making it look like a comic book. |
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - 9.5/10
This is some good shit. I decided to rent it based off of other users reviews and it was quite a pick. Good work, all. |
There Will Be Blood -- WTF/10.
I really didn't know what to think. It was boring at times and weird as hell at others. Maybe 6/10? Daniel Day-Lewis was awesome, though. |
Ichi The Killer - I'll give this a WTF/10 too
Very very very very very fucked up. If you like fucked up, by all means.. this is your movie. |
Deathproof 7-10
|
Köld slód (Cold Trail) 7/10
Quote:
Insomnia worked well, I think this will work well also. |
Michael Clayton 7/10
I'm being generous in my review. I thought it was very standard fare. Definitely not a best picture nomination. Darjeeling Limited 7/10 I really like Wes Anderson films, but this was a lot of style and not much substance. There was little humor and very little emotional connection with the characters. Dull. |
30 Days of Night - 8/10
Solid vampire movie, some quite frightening moments. Loved the dark, snowy atmosphere...reminded of The Thing. I found the lead vampire pretty damn freaky. Awesome Bela Lugosi reference midway through. Cool vampire teeth. Pleasantly surprised. |
I just saw Casablanca for the first time ever tonight. I really liked it but it was so unoriginal. I mean they kept using these cliched lines that I've heard a bazillion times.
"Here's looking at you, kid." "You'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life." I mean, come on! Where's the orginality? Also, there was no nudity in this film. 3/10 for the rocking tunes. |
Quote:

Funny enough, Casablanca. 5/5
Captain Renault is right up there with my favorite characters ever. |
Mayerthorpe 9/10
Great TV movie that was shown on CTV here in Canada, about the Mayerthorpe Incident where 4 RCMP officers were murdered by a man who shouldn't have been with normal people, fucker should have been in jail. It really shows the flaws in our justice system, and hopefully we take the lessons from this incident and apply them so it never happens again. |

Agreed they didn't need to jump back and forth as much, I'm pretty sure Canadians understood that Roszko had a coloured past to say the least.
|
Rambo 4 - 9/10
Holy crap this was good!! Talk about gory, Rambo does not mess around in this one. Star Wars V - 9/10 Weakest of the original 3, but still absolutely amazing. Love these ones Indiana Jones 3 - 10/10 One of the best movies ever, best one in the trilogy. I sure hope they don't ruin the fourth one. |
Semi-Pro - 7/10
Not a big Will Ferrell fan, but the music and dance numbers made it worth the 7 bucks. |
Disturbia - 8.5/10
I think this qualifies as a good thriller. Good performances, but there were some loopholes. I enjoyed it... and the girl is HOT. I want a rated R version. |
The Kingdom - 8/10
Good movie.. delivers exactly what it promises. How do you end these stories though? How do you decide who dies? Does their death always have to be symbolic? Eh, well... it was good. |
10,000 BC Zzz/10
The mammoths were cool. Um. Yeah... |
Audition - 2/10
I want to kill myself. Don't watch this movie unless you need to feel this way badly. |
Army in the Shadows (8/10)
A movie by Jean Pierre Melville very loosely based on his experiences in the French resistance during WWII. An interesting movie, but not as compelling as many of his other films. Quote:

Premonition with Sandra Bullock...
10 for keeping me interested (to the point that when the disk we got at the video store started freezing about 30mins to the end, that healer and I waited till the next day to take it back and ask for another copy just so we could see th ending) but 8 for the crappy but not so crappy ending. :) |

August Rush - 8/10
It was a good story overall, but there were definitely some cheesy parts, especially when the kid was playing the instruments... |
Okay I haven't seen 4 or 6 for a while, I will watch them again and get back to you guys!
Dante's Peak - 6.5/10 Enjoyable movie, but full of inaccuracies which takes away from the film. |
I just watched Grindhouse, fucking Sweet. its 2 parts.
I Give Grindhouse presents: planet terror a 9/10 (a Mini bike, zombies, and a girl with an assult rifle leg, fucken aye!) and i think ill give Grindhouse presents: Death Proof a 8.5 out of 10 Death proof would have been better if there were more bad ass car chase scences and less girl talk. oh yeah, i also watched a movie called Irreversible today. French film that so a wtf/10. its just pure insanity. Its a bit on the long side and has a few graphic scenes that just made me cringe. |
cashback - 9/10
This is a lovely story. It's got comedy, romance, gratuitous nudity, and a bunch of british accents. That's some good shit. |
Be Kind, Rewind - 8/10
Good, though not quite great. Does a wonderful job on constructing a beautifully improbable world, and the laughs are funny on a number of levels. Many of the filming techniques/styles are what's enchanting about this film. |
There Will Be Blood - 9/10
As good as they say it is. Also, as long as they say it is. |
Daddy Day Care. An oldie but still entertaining. 7/10
|
Hard Candy - 8/10
An enthralling movie that is difficult to watch at times. Great acting, too. |
The Other Boleyn Girl - 8/10
It was good but not fantastic. Great costumes, great acting especially by Natlie Portman. |
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial - Must have watched this loads of times as a kid, but I still enjoy seeing it. A masterpiece. 9/10
|
Doomsday - 2/10
After seeing this film I read that it was "not meant for everyone." Well, it certainly was not meant for me. I loved the idea, but I hated the film. Raw violence (and not much else) in a way that bored me. I would have walked out and gone into Horton, but it was sold out. |
No Country for Old Men -- ktspktsp liked it more than I did. I just didn't get the point, especially the ending. Some excellent scenes and character building, but I didn't see what is was building up to, so left the theater a bit frustrated.
Overall, barely 7/10. |
The Funeral - Chris Penn is so phenomenal in this overdone wannabe-Godfather story. The writing is so over-the-top but manages to really showcase the talent of the fabulous cast. For some outstanding performances, I'll call it a 7.5.
|
Ronin - 8.5/10
A solid action movie that gets you interested in the characters just enough to care. Great car chase scenes. Great characters. A couple memorable lines from DeNiro. Its entertainment. |
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys - 8/10
Just re-watched this film recently. It's an excellent 'coming of age'-type movie about a group of boys in the '70s trying to make a go of healthy rebellion with booze, mountain lions and comic books. Things don't go as well as they could. Jodie Foster gives a nicely understated performance as an oppressive, yet vulnerable nun and Vincent D'Onofrio the smoking, noncommital parish priest. Eastern Promises 7/10 I dunno. Didn't think much of this film. Cronenberg hit his peak with Dead Ringers, I suspect. And, sorry, but I just don't think Viggo Mortensen is that great of an actor. I sat through this film thinking, 'look, it's Viggo Mortensen talking like a Russian guy.' Even his movements seemed overly studied and purposeful. Eh, I just didn't buy it. But I do give him props for that bath house fight scene. Not too many actors would brave that one. *edit* Oh! But I wanted to mention how much I liked seeing Vincent Cassel in this film and enjoyed his excellent performance as Kirill. Capote 10/10 I thoroughly enjoyed this film and it was not at all what I was expecting. Which is a good thing. Phillip Seymour Hoffman deserved his nomination. Don't remember if he won or not...but who cares. It was an excellent film all around. Started watching Into the Wild last night and have The Darjeeling Limited sitting in line next to watch...I've been waiting for both of these for a long time. So far, I am enjoying Into the Wild very, very much. I am further impressed with Mr. Sean Penn. And the young man playing 'Alexander Supertramp' is excellent...don't know who he is. |
Hot Shots Part Deux. Hadn't seen it before but I love stupid movies. My favourite line - "These men have taken a vow of celibacy, like their fathers, and their fathers before them." 7/10
|
Lars and the Real Girl - 9/10
It was funny. It was touching. I cared about the characters. The acting was great. I even shed a tear at Bianca's "funeral". Excellent movie all around. |

stardust 8/10
okay so im not the biggest fan of magical worlds and mystical adventures with witches and all that exciting stuff, but i absolutely loved this flick, the characters are amazing, the special effects aren't lame, and the story is just awesome. not to mention ive loved the director since he did layercake. check it out if you havent seen or heard about it yet!! |
Training Day, again. 9/10
King Kong ain't got shit on Denzel. |
Ramdo 7-10 return of the action movie.
|
Quote:
   Dunno if that was on purpose, but it sounds like the porn version. |
Haha, yea Ramdo does sound like a porn.
No Country for Old Men - 9/10 thought it was awesome. Scariest/creepiest character out of any movie every. |
Doomsday - 6/10
Holy crap, b-movie galore! It was a virus movie meets mad max meets medieval times! All set in 2035! And a Bentley fails to outrun a school bus. Entertaining but not great. Definitely a renter. |
Into the Wild 10/10
I'd say this is a perfect film. I recommend it. |
I just got done watching Kinky Boots. It was a fun movie but not as funny as I hoped it would be...although there were a few hysterical parts. 7/10
|
Hitman - 5/10
Mostly a total yawner, fell asleep a few times throughout the movie. As I had feared, he never should have been cast as the lead role. Add in the ridiculous "I'm in love with a random hooker" aspect, and I'm glad I didn't see it in theaters. |
the darjeeling limited - 9/10
awesome flick, seriously wes anderson is a mastermind, really cool cinematography and great performances are per usual with most of his movies. AMAZING colour schemes throughout the film, and just an all around great movie, definitely check this out as soon as possible |
No Country For Old Men - 6.5/10
This movie in no way deserved all of the hype. Just about all 6.5 of those points go to the movie's villain who did an excellent job, but that's about where it ends. Slow paced, boring ending, big disappointment. |
Never Back Down. 6.8/10
I wasn't expecting to like this movie. Maybe it's just too many teen movies combined with WAY too many JCVD movies, but I've found myself becoming numb to the average mindless fight or teen drama film. The only reason I went is because Djimon Hounsou (Amistad, Gladiator, Blood Diamond) was in it and he's one of my favorite actors. I will admit that I was worried that Never Back down would be to Djimon Honsou what The Avengers was to Sean Connery. It wasn't bad at all. While the characters weren't exactly original, they weren't cookie-cutter One Tree Hill types at all. I'd liken them more to a Friday Night Lights type, which is actually a bit refreshing. The story isn't amazing, but it's not bad either, and it's well executed. There are also twists put in, shifting the status quoe. The fight choreography isn't horrible, but it's not exactly realistic. Still, I don't really expect truly realistic fighting in most movies because it appears awkward and has an inconsistent pace. All-in-all, it's not a bad movie. |

Top Hat (1935): 8/10
I went way back in time to 1935 to check out this musical with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I was expecting this black and white film to be rather boring, but I was wrong, this movie was funny and the acting was pretty good. Ginger Rogers is beautiful in this film! You should see this movie if you are a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers fan or if you like musicals or if you like watching black/white films. |
Quote:
You should check out Swingtime (esp.!) and Flying Down to Rio , as well. Those are my favorite Astaire/Rogers films. :) |
Quote:
As for the lead, I didn't think he was nowhere near dark and cold enough. I think Jason Statham or Vin Diesel would've been better in the role. As for the female lead, at least she was smokin hot, and not afraid to get nekkid. |
The Hammer - 8/10
A solid movie, considering I've always found Adam's tv personality to be a bit stiff. It's full of Adam-esque rants and social commentary, so fans of Adam will no doubt love the movie. It can get kinda formulaic, but not to the point of being trite and stale. I was really impressed to see him hitting focus pads and skipping rope so well! The rest of the cast is pretty solid, with a very charismatic foil in Harold's "Robert," and Adam's Nicaraguan buddy Ozzy. It's part love story, part buddy movie, part "underachiever achieving" (kinda like Cinderalla Man but with a schlub from the Valley). If it happens to play near you, I'd definitely recommend seeing it. |
Lost in Translation - 8.5/10
I know it took me a while to get around to seeing it, but I really enjoyed this much more than I thought I would! |

Neverwas 7/10
Better than I expected it to be. Not a bad movie about crazy people who believe in a fairy tale. Zzyzx 4/10 B-movie rating 9/10 B-movie greatness. Didn't fall into most traps of B-horror movies. Great desert background. Also, a tribute to Clockwork Orange worked into it. Exceeded my expectations, but those were pretty low. A decent way to waste an hour and a half on a warm evening. |
Vantage Point - 4/10
Awful movie, don't bother with it. I don't usually figure out twists, I think the last time being when I saw Saw, but this one was not only painfully obvious, but lacked the smallest impact. Hell, The Village had a bigger bang than this turd. The only reason I don't give it a lower rating is because of a few good action pieces, and some good acting. I am so glad I got in for free to see this. |

I do not agree with the previous comments: this movie is not boring. it might not be the best movie but you're not gonna fall asleep on it. I have never played the game but i knew what it was. The movie seems to follow what i know of the game but it didn't feel enough like the main character was a bad ass assassin. he was pretty chill compared to "The transporter" character who is in the same type of story line. Acting wasn't bad. but the rest is meh. I give it a 6 because i wasn't overly bored with it but i wouldn't recommend a rental. Watch it when it plays on cable or something like that. Overall score: 6/10 |

my bad. i added yours after and forgot to reread what i wrote before. it should have said: "i do not agree with the previous comment" no s. but i added it because you said you agreed with the "i fell asleep comment".
but getting back to the point, yes, it was lacking in dept and yes, the nekkkidness was great. |
Into the Wild: 9/10
I thought the acting, story, and music was fantastic. I can't believe how much weight Emile Hersch lost in the end of the movie. I want to live on the land, traveling place to place then living in a remote area, but I am pretty much allergic to everything outside and would have a terrible time. Either I would get over what I am allergic to, or just continue to feel like crap. |

Once: 9/10
This film is fantastic. Basically, it is about a guy and a girl making music together. The lyrics are amazing and their chemistry is so down to earth, it feels so real. |
Prom Night (1980) - 5/10
This little '80s, er, gem, isn't too bad, but as far as '80s slashers go it's definitely somewhere mid-pile. Very bland, okay story-wise. I give it thumbs up for three things: a very nice decapitation, Jamie Lee Curtis, and a very unfunny Leslie Nielsen. |
From Here To Eternity: 4.5/5
I tend to not like older movies because the acting always seems fake and cheesy, but I really liked this one (even though some of the acting was fake and cheesy). The story was good, the characters were likable, and the Pearl Harbor scene was great given the limitations of the time. I'm glad I gave this one a chance. |
30 days of night - 4/10
I really didn't enjoy this, it was so all over the place. It felt like they were making a 3 hour movie and just cut random scenes out to make it all fit into 100min. I felt that it had no flow. The Mist - 7/10 I really liked the ending in this, totally predictable, I called it about 40 min into the movie, but still liked it all the same. This movie was enjoyable and a hell of a lot better than I thought it would be. |
Okay.
I just finished watching Inland Empire, David Lynch's latest mind-fuck. And I don't know quite what to say. I think it's too early to rate it. Suffice it to say, good or bad, it had a definite impact on my afternoon. No one, and I mean no modern filmmaker can build suspense like David Lynch. Even though I hadn't the faintest clue what was going on, I couldn't stop watching. I was mesmerized. The one thing I can say about it definitively is that it is the most beautifully photographed Lynch film to date. His use of light and color is so totally distinctive and luridly elegant. The camerawork was exquisite. His use of ambient sound - torturous. Give the man a dark hallway and an ominously low humming sound with scratchy undertones and he'll make you pee yourself with dread, lol. Anyway, writing this is bringing me down a bit. Whew. I really got sucked in...maybe it's this cold - feeling a little woozy and under the weather. The movie's no Mulholland Drive, but I think it's safe to say that no one else could have made this movie successfully. And I think the old man did succeed. When exactly did David Lynch get this old? :p http://www.globalesland.de/archive/i...avid_Lynch.bmp This is a good read about the film: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/film/200...inland_em.html I really like this that he had to say about it: Quote:
Oh, sheesh, and Laura Dern was excellent. A truly admirable performance from an old favorite. :) |
The Mist (2007) - 9/10 - One of my favorite Stephen King short stories brought to the screen exactly as I imagined it. The CGI was pretty hooky, however the writers or director did remove elements of the story that were completely unnecessary to the intensity. The ending was one of those god-damn-it-all-to-hell moments. Definitely will watch it again.
Planet Terror (2007) - 5/10 - If taken for nothing more than comedic effect, it is great and grotesque. Once... maybe twice is enough. Watch with friends and get your popcorn buckets as helmets. Sunshine (2007) - 3/10 - no need to watch the whole thing again. more opinions here. |
"The Devil Came on Horseback"
I don't know the only term that comes to mind is "fuck." Just "fuck!" A doc about the genocide in Durfur, Sudan. Jesus Christ! The shit human beings do to each other. I'm going to walk down to the corner cantina and drink a cerveza, or ten, and see if really loud salsa music will help me forget what I just saw. When I get back maybe I'll have a number for the rating. |
