Terminator 3 DVD

What the hell happend? The first 2 were good. Other than a couple scenes being noteworthy merely for their special effects this movie sucked, sucked, sucked. Leave it alone already. I almost started thinking Arnold pushed for this because the Matrix gave machine vs human theme another small boost. I dont know; this just sucked on to many levels to go into.

I also just watched Finding Nemo and give it 4 out of 5. The more I see about Pixars staffing techniques and there offices, makes me just want to work for them. If you have not seen this one yet, its a very good, well done movie. The CGI is amazing.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell (category: anime/sci-fi/drama) [rating: 8/10]

The one thing that really caught my attention about this 90s era Japanese anime (after seeing it the second time) is that this movie has an incredible soundtrack (and sounds especially good on the new sound system my mom has). It really adds to the appeal of the movie as a whole, and I believe the music is what sets it apart from some other cyborg animes. Also, it has intriguing themes that could be deemed as philosophical in nature, and asks questions about the true nature of what is means to be human. I watched it dubbed, but I'd like to see it again in the original language. Ghost in the Shell is a treat.

Excellent topic!

For me, it'd have to be Bruce Almighty... my girlfriend and I rented it last night... on VHS! :P

Basically Jim Carrey's character gets God's powers for a week while God himself (played excellently by Morgan Freeman) goes on "vacation". Much hilarity ensues. :)

I'd have to give it a 4 outta 5. The ending got a bit dark for my tastes. Overall though, I laughed out loud a lot. :)

Last night I put in Almost Famous. It was getting late, so I didn't have time to watch the extended version. Even still it remains one of my favorite movies. It's got almost everything you could want in a movie. It's got a great story, great music, and it's hilarious.

The Missing

Infinately better than I thought it was going to be. Tommy Lee Jones but in his same monotone dead pan expression, but Kate Blanchett stole the movie. Her 8 year old daughter was a hard ass too. It ran a bit long but it kept my attention the entire time. Lord of the Rings couldnt even do that.

The Last Samurai (category: action/drama) [rating: 9/10]

I've already written what I thought about this film before the server seemingly crashed and lost what I wrote. Here's the quick scoop. Great movie; imagery, music, acting. As with most movies that cover broad topics, this film seemed too short and too long simultaneously. Overall, though, I loved it and wanted to cry several times because of its intensity.

Batman976 12-06-2003 10:00 PM

I stayed in tonight and decided to give Requiem for a Dream another watch. I've seen it several times, so it's not quite as shocking to me anymore, but it's still a great film. It's nice to see filmmakers who view their work as art. I love the visuals, the music, and the pace of the movie. Also, I'd like to go on record as saying that the Academy made a HUGE mistake for not giving the Oscar to Ellen Burstyn. She is phenomenal in this movie.

crfpilot 12-08-2003 07:36 PM

I haven't visited this thread yet so I'll give you the last few movies I've watched.

The Hulk - I grew up watching The Hulk on TV with his crappy green body paint or whatever they used and loved it. This movie was a little overdone Hulk was too big and looked too cartoonish (is that a word?) I give it 6 outta 10

Bad Santa - Great movie, I am a big fan of Billy Bob anyway and he plays a great drunk santa. 8.5 outta 10

Pirates of the Caribbean - I really was surprised by this movie I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. 8 outta 10

Batman976 12-11-2003 11:16 PM

I just finished watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I have to watch it at least once a year. It never stops being hilarious.

In the over-priced movie theators -- Kill Bill -- 4/5

I loved Kill Bill, I loved every gory second of it. Swords, sexy chick kicking ass in a knock-off Bruce Lee outfit, Lucy Lu, blood, anime, and the Rza producing the Ost, I love all of those things.

At home -- Fight Club -- 5/5

I could devote a whole page for the reasons I love this movie, Chuck Palanuick (I think I spelled that one wrong) is my favorite author. The movie pulled most of the important ideas from the book and still was true to the book (I think the book ending was better than the movie ending). You are not your fucking khakis.

Speedway Junky - 5.5/10

Jesse Bradford
Daryll Hannah
Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Johnny(Bradford) Is a runaway trying to get to North Carolina to be a Racecar driver. He goes to Vegas hoping to win enough to get there but ends up broke and falls in with a crowd of hustlers, druggies and thieves.

The story lacks heart. The relationship between straight boy and gay boy seems to be the focus of the movie, but it's bogged down by everything else that the relationship doesn't develop, at least it doesn't seem to until the end. It's a good story told not so good. Be forgiving when you watch it and you'll like it.

Chingal0 12-13-2003 02:13 AM

Theatre - Stuck On You? 3/5 - Pretty damn funny, and a decent story as well.. just kinda, weird. .. Cher sucks.

Derwood 12-13-2003 08:14 AM

"A Mighty Wind" - 7 out of 10

Guest, McKean and Shearer are never going to best Spinal Tap. A Mighty Wind is more charming than farcical, pushing the squeaky clean aspects of the folk music scene rather than mock it's lyrics. Still, Fred Willard is a riot, and Eugene Levy is fantastic. I even DIDN'T hate Catherine O'Hara (and usually I do).

Like "Best in Show", the movie falls a little short, if only because the cliches and trappings of the folk music world (or dog show world) aren't as plentiful (or as recognized as those of heavy metal.

On a side note, I think they left the best song on the cutting room floor. If you get a chance to see the DVD, look at the deleted scenes and dial up "Corn Wine". Absolutely Brilliant song. Is there a full version mp3 of this song floating around anywhere?

bundy 12-13-2003 09:00 PM

last flick i saw was Love Actually.

this film is fun!
it certainly wasnŽt as sappy as i was expecting. Working Title just seem to know how to make feel-good romantic comedies that make me cry (both happy and sad tears) and feel warm/fuzzy without making me want to vomit (unlike many others).
the cast is great! if you like british comedy and drama, then you will know everyone!
there are some very pointed jabs at the current American treatment of foreign policy as well as the current servile British response to such influence. iŽd love to know how this film was received in the states.
i loved this movie, but in the end it did kind of make me uncomfortable (not having anyone this christmas to make a crazy play for...).

iŽd give this one 5/5 (iŽm an easy marker)

i also just saw Spellbound.
now this is a sensational film/doco.
based around eight childrensŽ preparation for the National Spelling Bee.
since the Bee is such a uniquely American tradition it really was a hilarious glimpse into the real lives of Americans from extremely different backgrounds.
there were scenes where the entire audience in the theatre was gasping at these children spelling words iŽd never even heard of.
whoŽd have thought that watching a little group of super-nerd children spelling impossibly hard words would be so entertaining.
i thoroughly recommend this film to everyone.

5/5

InTeGrA77 12-13-2003 09:17 PM

about a boy...with hugh grant

this is what's written on the back of the dvd

Hugh Grant (Notting Hill, Bridget Jone's Diary) is simply brilliant in this comedy hit the critics are hailing "Hilarious!" (Premiere) Will Lightman (Grant) is a good-looking, smooth-talking bachelor whose primary goal in life is avoiding any kind of responsibility. But when he invents an imaginary son in order to meet attractive single moms, Will gets a hilarious lesson about life from a bright, but hopelessly geeky 12-year-old named Marcus. Now, as Will struggles to teach Marcus the art of being cool, Marcus teaches Will that you're never too old to grow up. About A Boy is the irrestible comedy smash that Richard Schikel of TIME Magazine says its "smart, funny, and winsome."

i loved it more and more every time that i watched it, and once you do, you'll have that "shake ya ass" song by mytical stuck in your head for a while...i definatley give it 5 stars! go watch it, you'll like it!

The Believer - 7.0/10

A good movie but not as moving or powerful as American History X. The movie is left open for debate, but the subject of debate can never be an intelligent one. Plain and simple, It's a movie about self-hatred. It's changed my attitude about some subjects. I still don't understand the motivation behind the main character, but I don't think you're really meant to. I think a quote from the film sums it up best, "I hate and I love and who can tell me why?"

Holo 12-14-2003 08:42 AM

Ichi the Killer

rating 1-10

Acting: 9
Story: 7
Violence: 200
Gore: 100
overall twistedness: 400

My review:
WARNING: DO NOT watch this film if you have violence or rape issues!!!!!!!!!! This film is full of scenes of extreme torture, rape, and mutilation. You have been warned.

It's almost impossble to review this; You just have to see it for yourself. Ichi is played wonderfully, as is uber masochist-sadist Kakihara. Most other parts are played failrly well but Kakihara, played by Tadanobu Asano really steals the show overall. His speeches while being beaten are simple but evil. His body mods are cool and scary at once. Asano's potrayal of Kakihara as quiet and cool adds a sinister dimension to the character.

Ichi is played excellently as the Boy-man-pushover-ultra-sadist-rapemonger. Nao Omori excellently captures all of these traits in one character and is very believable.

synopsis:

If you dont like subtitles don't bother. if you are not a person with a very morbid streak and like of gore you will not like this film. It genreally isn't something you watch with a female due to the overall extreme violence and rapes of women in the film.

Big Fish

This is the latest from Tim Burton. It really wasn't what I expected going into this movie (then again, I didn't know what to expect), but I enjoyed it. The movie is about a dying man, and his estranged son's desire to get to know know him as he really was, rather than from the fantastic tall tales he told of his life.

The best thing about this movie is the characters we meet throughout. The cast is amazing, and they all portray their characters very well. Don't look for too much action or humor. You won't find much. You'll just hear a number of good stories, with a pretty rewarding payoff at the end.

20000000/10 (in my opinion, it's the best movie that I've EVER seen, and thats saying something because I go to the theater a lot!)

I am so incredibly blown away after just seeing this film no more than 30 minutes ago, and I haven't even read the books yet to fully appreciate it. It was truly an amazingly cinematic film, and had every ingredient to make it very watchable. For a 3 1/2 hour movie, it didn't seem like it. The CGI was VERY convincing, and had me jumping out of my seat a few times. In short, ROTK took the LOTR series to a dazzling new height! Near perfect!

This movie appears as though a movie studio executive decided that since the original made money, just slap on the title and you have guaranteed box office. Hmm.... I had high hopes for this flick, and was pretty let down. In another thread here, someone was saying it was a great black comedy, comparable to the likes of Heathers. Wow, it's been several movies since I've posted in this thread. I just finished up with Gangs of New York. Before that I watched Chicago. I think both films are excellent, but I definitely think the Oscar should have gone to GONY.

The other night (I believe it was Thursday) I stayed in and watched Turner Classic Movies all night. They showed the following four films I'd never seen before:

The Time Machine (1960) - It was pretty good. I liked it much better than the shitty 2002 remake.
Soylent Green - Despite the fact that I knew the ending I still enjoyed it. It was an interesting look at a futuristic dystopia.
Sleeper - I think this is the first Woody Allen film I've seen all the way through. It was pretty funny stuff. I'm going to have to try to watch some of his other stuff.
Metropolis - I didn't think I'd be able to get into a silent film, but I watched it anyway because I'd heard several good things about it. I was actually very entertained, and it had some pretty cool visual stuff going on. Especially considering it was made in 1927.

John Amiel knows how to shoot a movie. he showed us in 'Copycat' , so what was he thinking while shooting this movie ? i still enjoyed it, but some plot elements are so ridicoulus you feel ashamed for the screenwriter. Do not attempt to watch with your brain active. 2/5

Tonight i have to chose between 'rules of attraction' (loved the book) or 'tomb raider 2 ' (very bad reviews).

Asoka 5/5

Bollywood film about the legendary Indian Emperor. The women are so beautiful in this movie. The plot is engaging. Even the singing and dancing was well integrated into the plot. Did I mention that the women were soooo beautiful. Great movie.

Rugrats Go Wild.

Not bad as far as the Rugrat's go. It's probably better than it should be because of the Wild Thornberries that are in it too. Bruce Willis does the voice of the dog Spike which is pretty funny.

Reading all of the other movies listed above makes me wish I could see stuff that kids 5 and under aren't supposed to watch. Speaking of that has anybody seen The Swimming Pool? It's not out on DVD yet in the states til Tuesday but I know it had a fairly successful theatrical run. Just wondering if anyone has seen it.

Eddie Murphy in "Delirious"

Eddie Murphy at his prime. But you must enjoy hearing the "F" word in every sentence. Sometimes twice. I love his recreations of his child hood: The Fart Game and taking baths with his brother, good stuff.

4 out of 5 for pure comedic relief.

lara croft tomb raider : cradle of life : i thought the first movie was one of the worst in many years, so i thought, the second could only be an improvement, and it was. now the movie is 0.5/5
i could complain about the bad exposition, the lousy dialogues, the utterly stupid story, the lack of any suspense. but i won't. what is worth complaining though : only in one shot there are nippels visible trough the clothes. and then they wonder why it failed at the box office. ... shame shame...

THOSE WERE NOT PROPS!!! AAAAAAAAAA!!!! (Sorry)

Theatre: LOTR ROTK - 11 of 10. I have been waiting for this movie for 20 years, and Pete Jackson totally came through with it. The better than perfect (as in changing the standard for fantasy movies) rating should imply a complete lack of flaws, and, really there aren't any. Even what I expected to be the most disappointing thing about the movies, totally removing 3/4 of the end of the book, turned out to be exactly what was needed, given that the movie was 3½ hours long. Had they done the Scourging of the Shire, they would also have had to do an intermission, and Theatres don't like to do that any more (the bastards). But, honestly, I never expect to see a better movie than that if I live to be 1000.

DVD: X2
What rating this gets depends on what you're looking for. As a comic book on film, it really worked well, particularly as a Marvel comic, which are, as any avid comic reader knows, laden with cheese. The dialog was the kind you could almost see the speech bubbles, the acting was stiff, the plot sterotyped. Like I said, a comic book.

As an action film, it's excellent. The opening scene where Spoiler: Nightcrawler gets into the Whitehouse and nearly knifes the president to death was both excellent and completely unexpected. At the end of the film Spoiler: Jean Gray dies saving them all which is good, as it will dramatically improve X3, character wise if not in terms of scenery.

However, all the things that make it a good action move and an excellent comic movie make it a not quite as good as average movie overall. Stiff acting, silly plot, poor writing, cheesy ending vs perfect opening scene and state of the art and then some special effects. I don't consider it time wasted, and I will certainly watch it again, just not in an awful hurry.
5/10

The Inlaws - Michael Dougals etc. -- Entertaining enough - not great. Liked the views of Chicago.

Cold Mountain

It was a good film, but I'm really surprised that it's receiving a lot of Oscar buzz. Renee Zellweger was really good, and should definitely be nominated for Supporting Actress. Aside from that, however, I just wasn't that impressed.

//Edit: Just found this quote on Rotten Tomatoes that sums up my thoughts pretty well:

"Not that there aren't award-worthy performances here, there are. And not that it isn't good, it is. It's just not THAT good."

The Last Samurai

I would give it around a 9/10.

Really enjoyed the movie. Battle scenes were probably the best part of it. I think that Tom Cruise did a very good job as well as the supporting cast. They were very believable. I also liked the soundtrack. Seemed to suit the movie really well.

The Hulk
I liked it, many did not. I enjoyed the special effects. My favorite scene was where Hulk faught the mutated dogs. I think that they should have bult more of the Banners hate for each other into the film instead of some of the science experiments.

The Order:

It was ok. It seemed like a really go nowhere story at first, but managed a decent ending. The viewer feels too in the dark during the film, lots of talking about bad things afoot, but they never really explain what they mean.

An ok flick, with a rent.

2.5 out of 5

Clerks. Seen it before, easily one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, tied with Mallrats for the best Jay and Silent Bob film. Kevin Smith is a genius.

I haven't seen Seven Samurai yet, but it's a Japanese film I do believe. 'Twas directed by Akira Kurosawa if my spelling is correct. I've seen The Hidden Fortress by him and it was a beautiful movie.

Monster - 4/5

Charleze Theron is such a babe that my idea of this movie was a total 180 from what i expected. Altho a quite heavy movie, it was still very good.

Two Towers Extended Edition: 5/5

I was pleased with the theatrical cut, but the extended cut is even better. Faramir's motivation is better explained, and the Helms Deep battle is better concluded. I really think it helped flesh the movie out even more.

Big Fish: 8.5/10

Great Burton film. Got almost everyone in the theater close to tears shortly after laughing themselves to tears. Burton hasn't lost his touch, and it was just a very enjoyable movie.

Dumb and Dumberer - .5/5 stars.

This movie was awful.
Honest to God, it HURT to watch the movie from beginning to end.

Frailty 3.5/5

Way too religious, and disturbing child abuse, but it's worth watching because the end has a cool twist.

Basic

4/10

Stupid movie that tries to think that it's intelligent but isn't. Good if you want to feel smart after being perplexed by Memento... which I wasn't. Would be a 0/10 but Samuel L. Jackson was the movie's only saving grace, with an awesome (as usual) performance. John Travolta, however, SUCKED. I wish he had never started acting. He should be imprisoned for crimes against humanity for some of the shit he's turned out.

I saw The Last Samurai this weekend. It was an excellent movie, wonderfully done. I give it 8/10 only because I wish they had expanded more on the "love story" that was underlined in the film. It was a beautiful, almost artsy, dramatic film. Very calming and absolutly excellent.

GakFace 01-14-2004 06:22 PM

Cold Mountain 9/10

I was completely caught off gaurd with this one. A friend heard from someone that it was a good movie so I went to see it with him. I was expecting a good civil war flick, not something that fulfills the area romance. It had both. Which is how I ended up liking it. It starts off as a tragedy.. and then romance, and a happy ending(for the most part). It also has some good 'feel good' parts to it. On top of that, the whole "civial war" feeling was shown through-out.
