Since unc mentioned Jefferson, I'm throwing in some interesting related geography. Here's a nice pic of Mt. Jefferson in Oregon. Wiki: Mount Jefferson is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, the Cascade Range and is the second-highest mountain in Oregon. Situated in the far northeastern corner of Linn County about 60 miles (97 km) east of Corvallis, Jefferson is in a rugged wilderness and is thus one of the hardest volcanoes to reach in the Cascades though USFS road 1044 does come within 4 miles (6.4 km) of the summit. Many people consider Jefferson's craggy, deeply glacially scarred appearance to be especially beautiful and photogenic. The peak has therefore frequently served as a backdrop for automobile and alcohol advertisements in the United States.

Jefferson's not very coastal.
Jefferson sent a couple guys this way in 1804, they returned in 1806. Quote:

I was just going for Astoria, but I'll certainly take Fort Clatsop. The recreation of the old fort burned down a year or so before I left so they were busy recreating the recreation as I left.
The last town I lived in in the states, an even smaller community of about 200, is just about right where that "30" is on the second map. You're up! |
OK, where the hell am I this time?
|
WH?
|
yes, WH
|
New Hampshire?
|
See, to me, "WH" means "Waffle House".
So yeah, that's my guess: Waffle House? |
Not New Hampshire.
I wish I was at the Waffle House...and now that you mentioned it, I'll get some for brunch tomorrow. But that's not where I am now. |
we have our own little shorthand here...
landlocked country? |
the place I am is not in a landlocked country
|
in brazil?
you guys know i'm driving back north tomorrow... |
South America?
Drive safe Phil |
I'm not in Brazil. Though I'm not in a landlocked country, I am not on the coast, either.
Have a safe drive and I hope all went reasonably well down there. oops, Tul jumped in just ahead of me: Nope, not anywhere in South America. I wonder if they have Waffle Houses in South America? |
Island?
|
No, not an island.
|
Antarctica
|
Not Antarctica. I'm north of the equator.
Hey, remember I was in Antarctica a while back?...or was that one of you guys? Also, isn't Antarctica an island? I always think of it as one. Since it's been quite hot around here lately, well over 90F and humid for many days, I'll throw in this pic of a nice cool spot. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...20berg2015.jpg |
When you posted "Not New Hampshire" I thought you were making a joking statement that you were not in the northern hemisphere, sorry. So northwest hemisphere?
And I think Antarctica is a cont. From Wiki: Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, overlying the South Pole. It is situated in the southern hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.4 million km˛ (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Some 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice, which averages at least 1.6 kilometres (1.0 mi) in thickness. I want to go so I can become a member of the "7" Club. A group of people who've been on all seven continents. Kind of like the mile high club without the sex. So North America? |
yes, North America.
I apologize if I missed unc's joke about New Hampshire meaning Nothern Hemisphere...I was wondering why he jumped to such a specific relatively small place, but I figured that's just unc. And I did just look up why some land masses surrounded by water are considered islands but others are not. If they are continents then they are not considered islands, and being a continent is partly due to being on a tectonic plate. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...tvsisland1.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...tvsisland2.jpg |
No worries on the joke, our shorthand is hard to follow at times. UP started using New Hampshire for the NH sometime ago, it's confused me more then once.
In the US? |
Yep, I'm in the US.
|
Land locked state?
|
Nope, I'm not in a landlocked state....errrr, or I should "states". The "place" I am spans the borders of two states.
|
River?
|
No, not a river.
|
Mountain?
|
Nope, not a mountain, and like I said, it's not a river. But it does have a characteristic wetness...though not a lake, either.
|
Old Faithful at Yellowstone?
|
Nope, good guess though since there is a lot of interesting wetness associated with Yellowstone. But I'm on the other side of the Mississippi.
I'm totally fascinated by Yellowstone, especially the caldera. Did you know that the earth's crust at Yellowstone is the thinnest of anyplace on earth? That thing is a gigantic volcano that will erupt again some day. I was fortunate to be able to explore that area before tourist season so there was practically nobody there but me...and I kept thinking "me and the grizzlies" who have been sleeping all winter and are just waking up and what do they smell for food?...me. |
Quote:
Didn't know that about the earths crust in that area. Interesting. Ok, Erie Canal? |
Nope, not the Erie Canal. Go south from there.
|
Are you in a bay?
|
No, but it's near a bay...within less than 50 miles there are some really nice bays. The Chesapeake Bay is north of me...I can smell that salt marsh air.
|
Virginia Beach?
|
hatteras?
|
Not right on the coast...I'm about 30 mi west of Virginia Beach, about 140 mi NNW of Hatteras.
|
Merchants Mill Pond State Park?
|
newport news?
|
Nope, neither of those...it is a park of sorts, though.
And as another hot/cold clue, I'm about half way between Merchants Mill Pond State Park and Virginia Beach. |
Dismal Swamp?
|
OK, Tully!!! Yes, I'm in Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...web6-27-08.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...thcarolina.jpg There is some interesting history about this place: Human occupation of the Great Dismal Swamp began nearly 13,000 years ago. By 1650, few native Americans remained in the area, and European settlers showed little interest in the swamp. In 1665, William Drummond, a governor of North Carolina, discovered the lake which now bears his name. William Byrd II led a surveying party into the swamp to draw a dividing line between Virginia and North Carolina in 1728. George Washington first visited the swamp in 1763 and organized the Dismal Swamp Land Company that was involved in draining and logging portions of the swamp. A five-mile ditch on the west side of the refuge still bears his name. Logging of the swamp proved to be a successful commercial activity, with regular logging operations continuing as late as 1976. The entire swamp has been logged at least once, and many areas have been burned by periodic wildfires. The Great Dismal Swamp has been drastically altered by humans over the past two centuries. Agricultural, commercial, and residential development destroyed much of the swamp, so that the remaining portion within and around the refuge represents less than half of the original size of the swamp. Before the refuge was established, over 140 miles of roads were constructed to provide access to the timber. These roads severely disrupted the swamp's natural hydrology, as the ditches which were dug to provide soil for the road beds drained water from the swamp. The roads also blocked the flow of water across the swamp's surface, flooding some areas of the swamp with stagnant water. The logging operations removed natural stands of cypress and Atlantic white-cedar that were replaced by other forest types, particularly red maple. A drier swamp and the suppression of wildfires, which once cleared the land for seed germination, created environmental conditions that were less favorable to the survival of cypress and cedar stands. As a result, plant and animal diversity decreased. The swamp is also an integral part of the cultural history of the region and remains a place of refuge for wildlife and people. The dense forests of the Great Dismal Swamp provided refuge to runaway slaves, resulting in the refuge becoming the first National Wildlife Refuge to be officially designated as a link in the “Underground Railroad Network to Freedom” in 2003. Establishment of the refuge began in 1973 when the Union Camp Corporation donated 49,100 acres of land to The Nature Conservancy. This land was then conveyed to the Department of the Interior, and the refuge was officially established through The Dismal Swamp Act of 1974. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ichoMarker.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...tch_small1.jpg http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wamp_Canal.jpg |
Do I get the Hunter?
OK, go! |
Those are nice little boats, aren't they? My buddy in Maine has one...I should have one, too...I'll tell my wife.

Hunter's on my short list. I WILL own a S/V within a year.

If not, Im still guessing Jakarta. Edit: Unka jumped in before me. Its obviously not Jakarta. |
hi girldetecitve.
I think Jakarta is a legit guess ...I don't see that was mentioned yet. But since I jumped the gun on TS, I'll guess Wellington, NZ |

Kuala Lumpur?
PS: Thanks for letting me join in the fun. Give me a couple of weeks to get a wall map and Ill keep track and jump aboard more often. |
Quote:
But... Kuala Lumpur is in Malaysia (per my google), I'm in Indonesia. |
How about Manado, Indonesia?
gd, I use google maps, too. Though I'm finding in this game what I do sometimes is google search for a map, e.g. "map of indonesia" and when the hit page opens I hit the "image" button at the top and then look for a map I like the looks of. Sometimes it's better than a google map, sometimes it's not. |
Samarinda?
PS: Thanks for the Google map tips, and I do use them, but for this game I kind of like the idea of a wall map with pins showing where weve been. Of course, I wont always use it or I would be weeks behind, but still... Quote:

Quote:
If you really do that pin in the map thing, you could be our designated travel historian...and eventually, like maybe after a few hundred more places, it would be cool to see a pic of your map. |
Quote:
Trust me when I say I was in no way trying to make you look stupid. Just wanted make sure you, as well as everyone else, knew we decided i was in Indonesia. As for Samarinda, no. But the city I'm in does start with an "S." -----Added 25/7/2008 at 07 : 26 : 18----- Quote:

Are you in Surabaya, Tully?
|
Quote:
We have a winner!!!!! Surabaya is either the second or third largest city in Indonesia depending on what source you reference. I was there in 1984. It's a gateway to Bali. Used to be people would fly into Surabaya and drive, ferry over to Bali. Several of us from my ship took a day trip to Bali. It was nice but we were shocked beers were .50 ea. ".50! Each!?! OMG!" But the beaches were nice, topless too. Which was a plus for a 21 yr old Navy guy. Almost made the beers worth the price, ok it did make the beer worth the price. Here's the maps the ship gave us when we got there: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3002/...74167b.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3140/...20913a.jpg?v=0 And no they didn't hand out the cash, I just kept money from each country I visited. Not sure what a 1000 note is worth in Indonesia but if I kept it I'm guessing not much. You're up gorgeous. |
My pockets are filled with cash and Im dangerous. I could be anywhere.
(as an aside to TM: mornin handsome) |
Northern Hemisphere?
Or as UP likes to call it New Hampshire? |
Yes, NH
(I think of it as New Haven, where Mary is.) |
Oh cool, a new winner. Good work...errr, I mean good play gd. I have great trust in Tully's taste, so when you take a picture of your pins-in-the-map maybe you could be standing there in the pic pointing someplace cool and smiling ;)
Are you in the Western Hemisphere? |
Yes, the first pin your designated travel historian will place on the map is in the Western Hemisphere.
|
Are you in Canada ...which we've also called Canadia here?
|
I see no mounties.
|
How about the U.S. of A.?
|
yep
|
...a new page and a new dawn for all mankind, and womankind too, especially girldetective
OK, are you west of my beloved Mississippi River? |
Mexico?
|
Go East Young Man.
Go North Older Man. |
Ok, per profiles Nick's got a couple years on me so..
East of Mexico and north of the Mississippi? Are you on an island |
Cool dude!
Okay. Let me re-phrase that and excuse me : Go East Old Guy Go North Young Hunk |
City?
|
Yes. A city, a small city. It has a postal code.
|
Would this small city be in a land locked state?
|
Are you in Iowa?
...see, all this old/young stuff...not from our new hot mama-babe-thread-friend, but perhaps from some insecure young guy...though I don't see Tull being one of those either... so chalk this up to one too many beers at the lunch I just had...it was Smuttynose IPA draft...not bad if I say so myself. And that tear we saw rolling down the chiseled face of our heroic Native American Warrior in that commercial...well I had a bison burger with my beer so one less bite for the wolves. |
Quote:
You strike me as the type of guy who's 59 going on 29. |
There is certainly water nearby, fresh not salt, but it isnt Iowa.
|
Hmm, but is the state you're in land locked?
|
How about Green Bay, Wisconsin...you cheese head.
|
Close, but no cigar.
|
How about Manitowoc?
I love Manitowoc...they make the best ice makers in the universe. |
Not that close.
Different state. |
ann arbor, michigan?
|
A song to thee, fair State of mine,
Michigan, my Michigan; But greater song than this is thine, Michigan, my Michigan; The whisper of the forest tree, The thunder of the inland sea; Unite in one grand symphony Of Michigan, my Michigan. I sing a State of all the best, Michigan, my Michigan; I sing a State with riches blest, Michigan, my Michigan; Thy mines unmask a hidden store, But richer thy historic lore, More great the love thy builders bore, Oh, Michigan, my Michigan. How fair the bosom of thy lakes, Michigan, my Michigan; What melody each river makes; Michigan, my Michigan; As to thy lakes the rivers tend, Thy exiled children to thee send Devotion that shall never end, Oh, Michigan, my Michigan. Thou rich in wealth makes a State, Michigan, my Michigan; Thou great in things that make us great, Michigan, my Michigan; Out loyal voices sound thy claim Upon the golden roll of fame Our loyal hands shall write the name Of Michigan, my Michigan. Yes, we are in Michigan. Not Ann Arbor though. I may have been remiss is saying I am in a city. Perhaps a town is more like it. |
A blueberry thing?
are you within 2 miles of the shoreline? |
