I must agree as b4 too that PvD is not IDM. Give some examples so at least we can see where you get that idea.

If you want an excellent compilation album of IDM or "electronic listening music", I reccomend Artificial Intelligence on the Warp label.
Aphex Twin (as The Dice Man), Autechre, Speedy J and others. Two thumbs way way up!

I never said Paul van Dyk was IDM.

"hello Brandon"

"Yo."

"Back to talk to yourself some more?"

"Yes."

"Very well then."

Tri Repetae ++ showed up today. I gotta say, at this point, I'm not very impressed by the first disc. I've only made it about half way through the second disc, which I liked. I'll definitely have to give it some listening time. But what I am blown away by is the new to rococo rot. album "hotel morgen." I bought this on a whim at Tower before I went into work today. Its a very broody album and rather bleak at times, but a very rewarding listen.

Ok Pulp, I'll check me out some Hallucinogen. Glad to hear you like Autechre. It is a very good album.

Does anyone care for Astral Projection? What would they be classified as? Whatever the hell it is, they are one of the first electronic groups I ever got into.
Astral Projection is psychedelic trance, just like Hallucinogen. Except AP is much much older style, often referred to as classic "goa" trance. None of this, however, is IDM

I think Im going to start a psytrance/goa thread.

In the vain of IDM, I've really been enjoying Pilote recently, though that's about as soft as you can get with the idm.
Cex's new album (maryland mansions) rocks the casbah of the glitch and funky and somewhat hiphop oriented.
the new venetian snares is AWESOME for the harder flavored stuff.

Upon giving Tri Repetae++ further listening, I really like it. There is a definite evolution in sound. They seem to have eschewed the more upbeat sounds from "Amber" and are exploring the possibilities of noise and chaos. I really like the whole album, but I've been listening to the 2nd disc more. I would highly recommend the new to rococo rot. album. Think of it as a bit of Music has the Right to Children mixed with some Amber. It is a very laid back "come play with me" type album.

What new Venetian Snares is this you speak of? I've been thinking of buying Doll Doll Doll because of the song "All the Children are Dead." Fucking insane that song is.

*edit* checked out the skimo.com site. Not impressed. Their selection doesn't appear to be that great, and what I did find that I was looking for was used. I don't like used stuff; I don't like knowing other people have touched my shit.

So I got Confield yesterday (finally). Um. Well. It's uh.... fatiguing to listen to. I made it all the way through it tonight. I've attempted many times before and haven't been able to do it. I can make it to about track 7 and my brain hurts so much I have to stop. It's an amazing album, though. I never realized just how beautiful utter chaos can be. I especially love the last track, where you get this feeling of everything falling apart.

Skimo is an interesting place, because it's run by only one guy. but he has the mad connections, and is willing to talk with you to find out what will suit your desires best. personally, I've never had trouble finding anything I wanted on that site (except, naturally, old releases... and I havn't tried recently, since he just had a huge revamp).

for big name artists like that, Amazon will be a much better place to find new copies, especially of older material. I often find myself there for copies of old classics, like Aphex Twin like you said =)
When you want to find some of the less common, compilations, side projects, limited editions, underground, etc, or just don't feel like supporting corperate amerika, skimo is my favorite place.
for example: Mr Projectile, Abfahrt Hinwill, Funkarma, Bogdan Raczinski.. )

I bought some more Autechre earlier in the week. I was downtown for an eye exam, had plenty of time to kill, so I decided to go to Virgin. I picked up Draft 7.30, Chiastic Slide, and Peel Session 2. They are drifting farther and farther from reality in Draft 7.30. Blips, pops, and whizbangs are even more prevalent then they were in Confield. Strangely, I enjoy this more than Confield. It just works for me somehow. Chiastic Slide is another "out there" work, but I really enjoy this one as well. It is still calculated noise like the others, but has an eerie ambiance lurking in the background different than the rest. My favorite out of the bunch is Peel Session 2. Although just an EP, it clocks in at longer than some full length albums out today. This feels like a brief jump back into reality and sounds like it could once again be described as "music." It feels like Amber, only slightly evolved. Track 3 "Gaekwad" is my personal favorite. After listening to it for a while longer tonight, I really like the first track too. It feels alive. Like a player piano playing music so someone passing by will play with it.

Hello. My name is Brandon, and I'm an Autechre-holic. I have never adopted a group as fast as I have Autechre. I've bought like 8 or 9 of their albums in about a month and a half. I picked up Peel Session 1, ep7, and Incunabula at Tower a few days ago. Again, WOW. Rob and Sean never cease to amaze me. ep7 is a 1999 release, so we're talking space age, pops, fizzes, blips, blaps, snaps, and more whizbangs. It just works. I really like this (no surprise there...) album. Incunabula took my feelings on Amber exploited them, and turned them on me. Its brilliant work. Although I absolutely love it, I would dare to say that I enjoy the unclassifiable, doens't even resemble music sound of Autechre, than the more rhythmic IDM sound of Autechre.

*strolls in, whistling an unknown tune*

Bought some more tunes tonight. Went for a walk down to good 'ol Tower and picked up Boards of Canada's Twoism and plaid's Double Figure. I listened to BoC first. Another excellent release from the Hexagon Sun crew. This is definitely on par with Music and Geogaddi. There was no "warm up" period to this album like I had with Geogaddi. I loved it the first time I heard it. I'm listening to plaid right now. I've heard this before, and it is well worth the $15.99 admission price. The 2nd track "Squance" is my fave so far.

I'm bewildered - why does this thread make a connection between IDM and grindcore?

That's like making a thread called "Any Geto Boys, Raffi, Morbid Angel, or Disney soundtrack fans here??"

Grindcore = socially conscious offshoot of anarchopunk crossed with a stripped down death metal sound. Seminal bands: Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Brutal Truth, Nausea, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Exhumed, etc.

Known connection to IDM = ZERO.

Thanks for reiterating what didn't need to be said. The thread has been straight IDM from the get go. And your description of grindcore is fucked. You make it sound like a ripoff of other genres, when it is an original creation. Check out Burnt by the Sun, Dillinger Escape Plan (grind/noisecore), Luddite Clone, The End, or Unearth for a good feel of grindcore.

Ok since it sounds like you have spent a lot of money on music in the last few months, do me a favor.

Make a list of ten CDs that I should find in order to appreciate this Genere (IDM) . Anyone feel free to chime in!

I thought you'd never ask, in no particular order:

1. Boards of Canada - Music has the Right to Children
2. Autechre - Amber
3. Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
4. Plaid - Double Figure
5. Mu-ziq - Brace Yourself
6. Bexarametric - Bexarametric Pressure LP
7. to rococo rot. - Hotel Morgen
8. Venetian Snares - Winter in the Belly of a Snake
9. Amon Tobin - Supermodified
10. Orbital - Middle of Nowhere

Upon finishing the list, I would say that although the list is in no particular order, I would highly recommend you buy Music has the Right to Children first. I feel that is IDM defined. I put 10 unique items on the list, not wanting to have it full of any one "artist." I could have done a 10 best Autechre albums, but that wouldn't have been fair. Definitely start with Music... and give that time to work over you. You will be immersed in what feels like a new world. After this, I would go to Twoism next, you'll love that, and then pick up Geogaddi. That might take some getting used to. It took me several weeks of listening to warm up to that, but I absolutely love it now. If you want to make the "dive" into Autechre, it would be insane to start anywhere else but Amber. A trip to the psych ward will ensue if you start on some of the newer stuff. Move onto Incunabula after Amber enraptures you. Take two and call me in the morning.

i have to get autechre's amber back. i threw a new year's eve party and had it playing on a boombox in the bathroom with blacklights going. someone opened my bathroom window and threw the boombox out to their friend during the party. i really didn't care that someone stole the boombox, just that i lost the cd. anyway, music has the right to children is amazing work. i'd say either boards of canada or autechre are my faves. fans of autechre should check out the skam label.

Eeep, what a response. Haven't visited TFP in quite some time. Sorry guys.

Guess I have some 'splainin to do with my linkage between IDM and Grindcore eh?

I guess I was talking about electronic grindcore, super fast shed your brain in two stuff like Pale (www.twentyknives.com - he's my friend and owns corehard, check him out) and some of the more harsh bogdan, shitmat, and frogpocket stuff.

sooo....The latest electronic releases i've been diggin have been

edIT: crying over pros for no reason

Julian Fane: Special Forces (note: this is not really out yet. I have a copy due to unspeakable circumstances ;\ This stuff reminds me of the Postal Service, except not fucking shitty. real indie rock lyrics over real idm/breakcore. good good good shit.)

i've been rocking dDamage a lot too.

i'm a planet mu guy, if you can't tell. www.planet-mu.com

Aside from all that, I've really been living it up on the indie rock side of things. The Decemberists, Ben Kweller, Deathcab for Cutie, The Long Winters, Trouble with Sweeney...all these bands are seriously cool.

I also play drums in my own jam band (don't even have a singer).

yay music!

edit: I forgot to mention my opinions of Snares and Autechre! I think these guys are just a wee bit too random and not rhythmic enough for me to enjoy.

I like ragga too. Ragga is good shit.

I guarantee you there is nothing random about the beat structure of Venetian Snares or Autechre (or Richard D James, or Squarepusher, or Funkstorung, or..)
but I concurr that sometimes a more steady beat is desired.. but then it's not really IDM anymore is it?

hmmm

I will agree that their sounds often come off sounding random and haphazardly thrown together, but rest assured that they are prescisely and mathematically constructed. Recently, I have been delving into the many Many MANY levels of Boards of Canada. When you really analyze it, their sound is breathtaking. I have always been really into them, but now I feel like I have an understanding and appreciation for it like I never had before.

VSnares is extremely prolific and puts almost no thought into each of his albums, and people think it is genius work. His songs are fast, trashy, and lack discernable melody.

AE's gantz graf release is extremely spazmatic and the only way I can listen to it without getting a headache is if I'm on acid.

So, brandon11983, while being "precisely and mathematically constructed", both Snares and AE's music sounds like poop to me. BoC were correct when they said that music is math, but not the other way around.

edit: Also, brandon, if you would like to know more about electronic music, this really isn't the place. check out www.planet-mu.com and their boards to meet some musicians and kids who know what they are talking about.

If I came off as a know it all, I apologize. I've only been into IDM for six months or so, and I still have a lot to learn. I have been checking out Planet-Mu lately too. Mu-ziq has had my ear a lot as of late, but not nearly enough as I've been listening to Geogaddi. Ae's Gantz Graf is one of my fave Ae albums. I will COMPLETELY agree that this will give the listener a headache. The last track is worse than all of Confield. I start gritting my teeth a few minutes into it. I need a cup of Gatorade after each listen.

I am in sheer amazement of Autechre. I like it so much because it (save for the early releases) pays heed to none of the defintions of what the world calls "music." It has no discernable rhythm, no set time scheme, or any of the other elements that other "musicians" adhere to. Needless to say, it is not for everyone.

Whats up ladies? I'm back. I was sitting through some boring ass training and orientation at my new job at Eddie Bauer, and decided to walk across the street to Virgin. (expect a lot of "new CD" stories to start like this from now on...) I had already picked out what I wanted, so I went right for it. I picked up The Cure's Disintegration, µ-Ziq's Royal Astronomy, and Global Underground 13: Ibiza from Sasha. I already had the 2nd disc from Sasha, and they had the 2 CD set on sale (all GU sets to be exact) on sale for only $10! I know Sasha is not IDM, so don't bother pointing that out...(lol) I do like his music, and I really liked what I had, it was a great deal, so I picked it up. I love The Cure, and I picked up Disintegration because it was on sale and had a few songs I was looking for. As much as I have gotten into µ-Ziq, RA is just not doing it for me. I'm listening to it right now, and I don't much care for it. Hopefully it will grow on me sometime. Until next time, (probably not long from now because I work across from Virgin now) take care all.

Lately I have been listening to alot of Mr Projectile.
Hands down, the most beautiful production I've heard in a loooong time! It's uses more ambient textures than most "IDM", nor is it abrasive... it's off-beat beat-structure characteristic of "idm" is beautiful and well constructed, and sends my heart spinning... thick sounds and textures that slice into emotion. be forewarned that it's not cold like alot of idm can be, it's, in fact, very emotional. if you like Dntel, you'll like this.
if you need to preview just one track before buying the album, I would suggest "you need" (track 1 off his album "sinking").
