Any IDM/Grindcore fans here?

Cmon, I know one of you out there likes IDM. Anyway, I'll go listing some of my fave artists.

Pale, D'atachi, µziq, jega, squarepusher, amon tobin, arovane, ovuca (his astrobotnia work is STELLAR), bogdan raczynski, joseph nothing (tatsuya is my god, holy shit he blows my mind - and if you haven't heard his work as "rom=pari" you really should), com.a......others.

Anyway, if you haven't heard of Pale, he's this upcoming kid, has done work with shitmat and tatsuya, really nice fella. I've been talking to him through AIM for like a month, he's let me listen to a lot of his unreleased stuff. Look for him in the grindcore scene, he's gonna hit it big.

Hail IDM, grindcore is not really my thing though, I like IDM at the opposite end of the spectrum fucked up beatwork over relaxing clean pads. I'm openminded though, I'll listen to glitch, microsound, drill n bass, and everything else that seems to be crossing over with IDM these days.

What the hell is IDM? I love grindcore though. Some of my faves are Burnt by the Sun, Luddite Clone, Dillinger Escape Plan, He Who Corrupts, and As I Lay Dying.

IDM stands for Intelligent Dance Music (sometimes Industrial Dance Music, but that term isn't used as much, and isn't as accurate imo). I think it's generally accepted that the genre (or genres, because IDM can cover quite a range of musical styles) was pioneered by the artists of Warp records and their 'Artificial Intelligence' series of records.

love it. whatever "it" is

I've been rather angsty lately, so Bogdan Raczynski and Venetian Snares have been in high circulation.
But I'm a cheese ball at heart.. so I love me some Abfahrt Hinwil, Andre Esterman, Bola...
kind of old, but still fabulous is the Dub Recordings collections... I discovered the artist L'usine through the compilation Nummer Drie, and was tickled shitless to find out he's recently moved to where I live (Seattle). If you cand find his track "Fog" off that compilation, I'd highly suggest it... one of my favorite downtempo/IDM tracks of all time.
Funckarma is also on this comp, and is an incredible artist in his own right.. on the much more mind fuck tinge, gotta love that mental fuck.

the urban gansta bitch in me loved Prefuse 73 and Machine Drum. These are always fun to pull out when I'm out DJing, doing a chill room, and some jackass Gangsta asks to MC... "suure... let me throw these beats on real quick just for you" :insert sinister laugh:

So much good music out there...

for those on broadband (and you better be on this site), turn your music streaming software of choice to SomaFM's "cliqhop" radio. FABULOUS.
oh, and www.Skimo.com is by far the best place to buy "idm" and related music.
and if you're anywhere near Seattle, shoot me a message =)

Yeah, Grindcore is excellent. Dillinger Escape Plan are to me by far the most creative/innovative band in the field, followed closely by Napalm Death. I also kind of like A.C., but that's a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Upon just hearing of 'IDM', I won't embarass myself by suggesting other bands along those lines, who will probably end up not being classed as IDM.

Love "IDM"....hate the genre title. (can you say...pretentious?)

Another few bands to add to our "list":

Autechre, Wauvenfold, Aphex Twin, Black Dog, Plaid, Boards of Canada.

Especially Autechre....their music is incredible and I mean that as literally as possible...in-credible...literally unbelieveable.

(yes I am Warp's bitch! )

Sure!
Autechre: Tri Repetae++, is probably my favourite of theirs. Its a double album, and a good introduction to what they are all about.
Also Confield. This album is...um....out there for want of a better expression. Its not always exactly easy to listen to, but deep under the churning layers of noise there is an incredible beauty.

Check out this review on amazon.com. I couldn't even attempt to describe this album, but I think this review does an excellent job. I agree with every last word of it...

Autechre are mulching electronic music, letting their code sweat and rot in the heat. In doing so they set off a complex ecological process that is interesting to watch, if not always pretty to listen to. In parts, the rot has overtaken the music, leaving a humid pile of squirming mush in its place. Depending on your disposition, reactions of "cool," "gross" or "turn it down" all make sense. For those who elect to take advantage of the putrefaction, Autechre's compost heap can serve as nutritious, stinking fertilizer for sprouting fresh possibilities in audio composition.

Wauvenfold: 3fold is a collection of 3 eps. The openning track Clip is weird and wonderful. It is mainly the sounds of something like a camera's zoom lens, and other turning and clicking devices and such.
Stange samples such as these turn up through out the rest of the album, but they never appear out of place. They aren't samples played on top of music (like so many artists who are shamelessly guilty of this) but rather the samples are completely apart of the music.

Aphex Twin: Pretty much everything by Aphex Twin simply rules! Soem good albums to check out are Druqks, Richard D. James Album and for a real treat Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Also check out some of his alter egos; Caustic Window and Polygon Window.
Some good individual tracks: Come to Daddy, Flim (a semi-namesake for me!), Icct Hedral (the Philip Glass orchestration is even beeter than the original), On, Donkey Rhubarb, Quoth(as Polygon Window), Xtal, Girl/Boy song, goon gumpas.

Black Dog consited of three members, but then split, with two of them forming Plaid, and the remaining member Plaid.
Check out Bytes one of their first releases.

[b]Plaid: I love these guys! Not For Threes is a wonderful album! Very listenable, and interesting, with a few tracks featuring guest vocal talent (including Bjork on Lilith). For something a little stranger a suggest Spokes
Good tracks:
Abla Eedio, Lilith, Eyen, Assault on Precinct Zero,

Boards of Canada: Music has the right to children is a very strange, slightly creepy album, featuring a lot of vocals from children. It basks in a sort of childish playfulness, but is all the better for it. Maybe I'm just weird, but kids weird me out!

Squarepusher: Go Plastic and Hard Normal Daddy are great albums worth checking out.
Red Hot Car is a brilliant track, though it may give you a distorted view of what to expect from Squarepusher in general as it is much more "poppy" than the rest of his stuff. (It seems many people ended up buying Go Plastic after only ever hearing Red Hot Car, and ended up hating the album.)

Yeah, checked it out from your link. Its very good. I am on a dial-up connection though, so I can't really browse and listen at the same time, and even when I do nothing but listen, I still can't hear it at good sound quality. What I wanted to do was to use the Disk Writer plugin from Winamp and then leave it running for an hour or two, and then come back to the computer and listen to it offline, but alas! it cannot be done.
Good site though.

Not too keen on Autechre... don't know why.

Aphex Twin are easily my favorite IDM band, followed by Orbital and Boards of Canada. I like Dntel a lot too (his solo stuff is better than his Postal Service stuff). If Prefuse 73 counts as IDM, he's right up there too.

If Orbital is part of the IDM genre then they get my vote for best band in the genre. Squarepusher and Aphex Twin gets two thumbs up, but they're not even close to Orbital in my opinion.

yah, heh... it's by far the most loose genra... I have to chuckle when people (myself included) say "I really like IDM" when it encompasses SO MANY styles. I love the soothing euromelodic chunky bass glitch IDM (?!) as much as I love noise/drill'n'bass oriented IDM.. but the two are completely dissimilar in everything but that they are "experimental" in some sense and don't always follow a common musical structure.
Which I guess is kind of the definition of IDM... even if some of it has become fairly generified, IDM, in general, does not follow a common musical structure. sometimes it deviates a little, sometimes it deviates alot. sometimes music that is not IDM has IDM elements (the guy from NERD comes to mind, and alot of hip hop, for that matter). usually IDM incorperates normalness to set the stage for its abstraction. but it's always different than what you should be expecting.

oh, and Orbital is NOT IDM. Orbital is just good electronic music, but it's very standard. They do breaks, techno, house, and downtempo.

He's not really IDM, but does anyone else here dig Paul van Dyk? This guy has been owning me for a few weeks now. I bought "Seven Ways" a few days ago and I just bought "Out There and Back" 15 minutes ago. He was at a club in town called Vision last month and I am kicking myself for missing him.

I'm personally offended and disgusted by you bringing up a hack like Paul van Dyk in this thread. Even more so that you said he's "not really IDM", implying that he is in any sort of way remotely as ingenious as the most piss-poor idm artist.
PvD is trance. His specific sub-genra is shitty etard trance. If you want good trance, pick up Hallucinogen's "The Lone Deranger" album (not available at your local music store... try psyshop.com ).

And now... back to your regularly scheduled glitch...

Me <3 Venetian Snares. Today it's been rainy, crisp, and lush.. .perfect weather for their album "Winter in the Belly of a Snake"

PvD is the most recognized DJ in the world (more so than Oakenfold, Tiesto, Digweed, Sasha...) for a reason. And he is not just trance. He covers many a different sub genre in electronic. I do appreciate good trance, such as Juno Reactor and FSOL (Lifeforms).

Venetian Snares is fucking insane. I haven't picked up any of his albums but I would like to. "Find Candace" is music assault like none other. It sends chills up your spine, grabs you by the throat, shakes violently, and throws you on the ground in a heap of yourself 8 minutes prior.

Ok. Have listened to Music has the Right to Children at least 6 or 7 times now. A masterwork to say the least. It does have a childish feel to it, like the music is holding my hand and guiding me where it wants me to go. I have found it to be very soothing to listen to, never aggressive towards the listener, but rather welcoming to them. Well worth every penny.

***Music has the Right to Children*** 24 hours later

I have been listening to this incesantly since I bought it. I am still completely in awe of this album. I sit in front of my speakers in the same amazement that would overtake me if a flying saucer landed in my front yard. Its ethereal feeling. The music beckons you to play with it. Several songs spring sonic references to A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and even Doctor Who.

CS... I find it to be the total opposite. The child laughing on "Aquarius" is such an innocent laugh that whatever it is being laughed about could not possibly be anything dangerous.

I placed a mega order on Amazon yesterday. On its way is:

Paul van Dyk - The Politics of Dancing
Paul van Dyk - Global CD/DVD
Paul van Dyk - Reflections
Autechre - Confield
Autechre - Tri Repetae++
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
All Else Failed - Archtype

and I also picked up a 2 pack of bath towels for $9.99 that came with free matching hand towels. Sure as hell can't beat 2 nice bath towels and 2 nice hand towels for ten bucks!!

The Politics of Dancing shipped today, I'll be sure to post a brief review. I know PulpMind is dying to hear it!!

Ok. I finally got The Politics of Dancing today. Because UPS is retarded (they said they tried to deliver it yesterday morning at 9:31, and no one answered.... despite the fact that I and my roommate were both up and about) I had to go pick it up from the hub center south of downtown. It was a fun journey and the view of the skyline on the walk back was absolutely awesome. I was smiling the whole way back to the el station.

Anyway, I digress.... So I've been listening to it for a while now, on track 16 on the first disc. I haven't been paying an incredible amount of attention to it, but what I've heard I have really liked. I stopped by the Virgin MegaStore on the way back, and picked up Amber from Autechre. I listened to that at work a few days ago and had to have it. I also nabbed Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Virgin Sampler downtempo grooves was free because I spent over $50. Coolness. My thoughts to come soon on the rest when it shows up. (or when I drag all the way south of downtown to get it)

Ok. Still no The Politics of Dancing review, as I have not been able to stop listening to Amber.

As you may have guessed, I really dig this album. I have found it to be more enjoyable than Music Has the Right to Children at medium to medium high volumes. Each of the tracks elicits a different emotion. Track 1 "Foil" reminds me of a plane crashing for some reason. Just the overall sound of the track gives a feeling of impending disaster. Track 4 "Slip" on the other hand, is a more upbeat track which gives me feelings of a bright future, maybe one with flying cars. Track 9 "Yulquen" is a depressing experience. It sends a chill of failure through my mind. The kind of failure that you subtly know about in your head. Track 11 "Teartear" is another bummer of an ensemble. This time it is in a more upbeat flavor than "Yulquen," but it is chilling to listen to. It has an air of deception about it, and that works to its advantage as it works over the listener. You can't help but listen to this track. It reminds me of some background music like I would hear in an episode of Doctor Who.

Is anyone still with me here??

**crickets chirping**

EDIT May 31st: after listening to Amber as much as I have been, I have found myself putting Music Has the Right to Children back in.

....no one is listening

Does anyone care for Astral Projection? What would they be classified as? Whatever the hell it is, they are one of the first electronic groups I ever got into.
