IDM stands for Intelligent Dance Music (sometimes Industrial Dance Music, but that term isn't used as much, and isn't as accurate imo). I think it's generally accepted that the genre (or genres, because IDM can cover quite a range of musical styles) was pioneered by the artists of Warp records and their 'Artificial Intelligence' series of records.
