yah, heh... it's by far the most loose genra... I have to chuckle when people (myself included) say "I really like IDM" when it encompasses SO MANY styles. I love the soothing euromelodic chunky bass glitch IDM (?!) as much as I love noise/drill'n'bass oriented IDM.. but the two are completely dissimilar in everything but that they are "experimental" in some sense and don't always follow a common musical structure.
Which I guess is kind of the definition of IDM... even if some of it has become fairly generified, IDM, in general, does not follow a common musical structure. sometimes it deviates a little, sometimes it deviates alot. sometimes music that is not IDM has IDM elements (the guy from NERD comes to mind, and alot of hip hop, for that matter). usually IDM incorperates normalness to set the stage for its abstraction. but it's always different than what you should be expecting.
oh, and Orbital is NOT IDM. Orbital is just good electronic music, but it's very standard. They do breaks, techno, house, and downtempo.
