warmer, but nope.

King & Dufferin?
|
Getting hot....
But still not there. Those stairs are indeed historical. |
The steps leading down from the west side of Dufferin to the old CNE train platform? I've always been curious as to how it was used and when it went out of service.
My guess is that the rail access to the CNE grounds were rejigged when Exhibition Stadium was built. |
or... given JTK's "historical" prodding, are these steps leading down from Bathurst to the site of "Historic" Fort York? (Or King?)
|
Fres is correct.
They are indeed the abandoned stairs to the old CNE Train Station. They were built in 1911 at the same time as the Overhead (the bridge over the tracks). The stairs, the old platforms, the old pedestrian lighting are still in place. They were probably taken out of service when they built the new CNE station, however, I think the the old location is the superior location since there is better access to the residents of Parkdale. Mind you, if you're living in Parkdale, you have TTC galore at your fingertips to go downtown. The entire area is currently being "re-thunk" by the TTC and the City of Toronto as part of the new TTC initiative - "Transit City" where they are proposing to build a pile of dedicated Street car lines. Dufferin Street is very much up in the air. The local councilor (Joe Pantelone) is pushing hard for a dedicated street car line running from the Lakeshore in the CNE north along Dufferin, across the bridge and right up to Bloor Street. This would require the existing bridges across the Gardiner and tracks to be removed and replaced. (Hopefully with an amazing new cable stayed bridge - the new Dufferin Gate) Part in parcel with the Transit City initiative is an Eglinton Dedicated Street Car. I personally think that this is silly. Eglinton needs a subway, not a street car. (As does Queen.) Unfortunately, the political will just isn't there (the feds and the province don't want to fund it and the city doesn't want to push for it.) Here's the link to the current "Transit City" proposal if you are so interested in the future of transit in Toronto. IMHO, a Dedicated Street car on Jane, Dufferin, Don Mills, etc. is all well and good, but we NEED SUBWAYS on Eglinton and Queen. http://www.transitcity.ca/index.php?...d=16&Itemid=30 Here's another view of the old station..... http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c5...4/P7180030.jpg |
very cool. Thanks JTK.

Can we post a picture out of turn?
|
Go for it Milnoc!
I drive the Gardiner every day and I find that stretch very interesting. Farther west along the embankment below the tracks, there's an old wire and log fence that I bet dates back over 100 years. There's also a large concrete pad that I suspect once held a light standard. Back in the mid 90's I used to work at King and Atlantic and took the GO train in from Oakville. There was no northbound crossover from the CNE platform to the Liberty village side so I had to take the train all the way downtown and then doubleback in the King Streetcar, adding a 1/2 hour to my commute. Even though I don't work there any more I find it gratifying that they've rectified the situation and allowed GO passengers to disembark into that part of the city. In anticipation of Milnoc's post, here's a photo of one of GO Transit's spiffy new engines: http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...osts/GO601.jpg |

Need a hint?
Spoiler: Nation's capital. |
Well yeah, it might help.
Nice bridge btw. |
I wanted to wait just in case a local spotted it right away.
Second hint: Spoiler: What do you see behind the bridge? Most locals will recognize the style and will know approximately where to look for the answer. |
is it the side of part of the canal?
|
that's definitely part of the canal system. is that brown's park inlet? i used to live near there and that looks a lot like it. the willows especially.
|
No, it's not Brown's Inlet. But you're all on the right track!
|
patterson creek?
|
You've got it Leto! Patterson Creek! What you see in the picture is the West side of O'Connor Street bridge.
|
wow. Pulled that one right out of my ass. Been there once, thought it looked familiar.
Ok, off to find a pic.. brb here we go: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1..._2000/vic6.jpg |
Crap. Patterson Creek was my next guess... had a few picnics there back in the day. I am going to have to think about Leto's post.
|
............
Oops...never mind. I didn't realize I had to guess first then post pics. |
Guessing what it is seems to be a bit easier than where it is, as for where it is, just a broad guess as to province or territory I'd have to say NB, where exactly in NB I have no clue.
|
Looks like a small museum that just opened... Or a fancy customs office maybe?
|
I'm thinking customs office.
|
Somewhere on the plains maybe... the sculpture out front looks like a native on a horse with a war spear...
I was thinking museum or maybe a condo sales office. |
Geographically, Charlatan is a little closer. It's definitely not in the east. The ground is very dry. Here a pictorial hint:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...000/vic6-1.jpg I've un masked some of the building's name. |
The B.C. Visitor's Center at Osoyoos.
xxSquirtxx, if that's the right answer, you go ahead and post your picture. I've already cut in line with my contribution. |
very good Milnoc, game on. Feel free to contribute if Squirt is anavail..
|
I'm "fudging" my next contribution as we speak... :)
Squirt, go for it! I'll post mine tomorrow morning only if you don't respond by then. |
It's morning. Here's the next one. Again, it's not necessarily in my home town
http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC280146-XG1.JPG I'll provide hints after lunch. |
i have a feeling the JTK will be able to expound on this at length!
is it the Rainbow Bridge? |
No, not the Rainbow bridge.
Here's the next hint. Yes, it's another bridge. Let's zoom out a bit... http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC280146-YB2.JPG |
This is good. It's been a while since we did undersides of bridges...

Lion's Gate Bridge - Vancouver

Sticky's got it!
Here are the remaining shots. http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC280146-ZE3.JPG http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC280146-ZWFull.JPG http://www.milnoc.com/images/PC280132.JPG I'll have to get myself a scanner before it's my turn again so I can dig into my collection of b&w slides and Polaroid prints. |
|
Regent Park?
|
No, it is not Regent Park.
|
Yorkville English Academy? It was severely damaged when the Uptown Theater collapsed.
|
It is not Yorkville English Academy.
