Avocado -- Which way do you prefer?

I searched for a thread on the topic, but found nothing as specific..


My best friend and I generally like the same types of food yet when it comes to avocado(e)s the difference is like night and day.

I like mine with sugar and milk.(He thinks is gross)
He likes his plain with salt (which I find to be particularly dreadful).

<b>So here's a little task, just wondered if anyone would be brave enough to try both and let me know once and for all which is the better of the two options. The ingredients are all that would be stated above, the only variables being the measure of milk, sugar, or salt</b>

I know avoc's are expensive so I'd be glad to reimburse you guys a penny per avocado. okay maybe not. hahaha.

I've had both in my time. Of the two, the one with salt is my choice. That isn't to say either of you are wrong, though. Taste is a matter of a specific persons appreciation. If I had my druthers, I'd take freshly cut avacado with a tiny bit of salt, some squeezed lime, chopped tomotillos, smoked jalapino, and a bit of sautéed onion and garlic. Now I'm hungry again.

When I go to a Vietnamese restaurant, I often get an avocado milk shake. It's very creamy and tasty, without being sickly sweet. Otherwise, I've never ever heard of an avocado being served sweetened as a dessert. How did you learn to eat it this way?

As for salty, I could live entirely on home made Guacamole if I had to. Mmm, mm.

Will: I've yet to try your little concoction there.

Fres: My family taught me to eat it this way. I'm filipina so maybe it's more of a cultural yummy.. I have had those milkshakes and they're great.

well with my option, just cut up some avocado, throw in some milk and sugar (to your liking) and just mix/mash however you decide to moosh it together.

with the other option, just take some avocado slices and throw some salt on it and eat away.

avocado with sugar and milk just sounds disgusting... as a milkshake- it's got the right texture, but not the right flavor... it's the color of pistacio ice cream but - no where near the right taste...

avacados with salt and squeeze of lime juice please..

Asians see avocado as a fruit and treat it as such, which is why you can get Avocado ice cream, milkshakes, and other sweetened products. Most other cultures see it as a vegatable more than a fruit.

edit: realized i didn't answer the OP

I've had it as both, and well, figured out I didn't like avocado either way.. even when they put it into California rolls, I prefer it with cucumber.

Not a huge fan of avocado to be honest. But I have had it with sugar and milk and my opinion is that it's decent. Not terrible, but not amazing.

Now I gotta get me some guacamole and see if I like that.

i'm on the salty side.

generally, i do love sweet,
but i just didn't like this combo.

although...
i don't really like it just itself with salt.

i looooooove guac.
but not so much with just plain slices of avocado.

i've also tried an avocado margarita.
and the answer is no. not again, thanks.

and lucky us,
they're not so expensive here in TX.
they're two for $.88 this week.

Only way I've ever had avacodos, and only way I can ever imagine eating them, is crushed into guacamole. I have to say that both ideas sound kinda gross.

just for the record, if you leave the pit in it until right before you serve it, the guacamole won't turn brown. It's not just an old wives tale.

I've never even heard of just eating an avocado with sugar and milk; but I _do_ have a couple of recipes for avocado pie (a dessert pie, not savory) that I've been meaning to try out. And both recipes involve sugar, milk, eggs, etc.

When eating a plain avocado by itself, I generally either go with salt and pepper, or tobasco sauce. But I rarely eat avocado by itself; it's usually part of another dish, or guacamole -- heavy on the salt, lime juice, and garlic.

Not trying to threadjack, but at my alma mater (UT), some physics grad student wrote a paper on how to transform an entire building to output more guacamole than the entire world. Basically, you'd wind an electromagnetic accelerator (rail gun) through the entire thing. Cover an avocado in foil, accelerate it, use a magnet at the end to strip the foil, and let the avocado hit a cement barrier at something like 0.12c. Some smart ass always has to point out that this would result in an insufficiently chunky guacamole, but I still think it's cool.

Ok, I'm game to try both, I'll have to pick one up at the store tomorrow.

And now, one of my favorite ways to eat an avocado, which I learned from my dad. He learned this from his dad, who ate this during the Great Depression when avocados were plentiful in California.

Mash an avocado. Spread on two pieces of toast, preferably wheat or rye. Sprinkle with pepper. If you are feeling really adventurous, add bacon and tomato...wala, an open faced avocado sandwich. This is one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast.

That was when they were first trying to grow them as a real cash crop out here; they probably weren't able to sell enough at first, and had a surplus.

The avocado on toast recipe sounds pretty good -- but it's also very Great Depression; they ate _everything_ on bread in those days, because the bread -- which was usually cheap or made at home -- "stretched" the other ingredients. My parents ate (and Mom still eats) beans on bread, gravy on bread, stewed beef on bread (Portuguese soupas), creamed tuna or beef on toast, and more. Any left-over savory or meat with gravy -- if it wasn't enough for another meal -- was consumed as an open-faced sandwich.

Yeah, well, maybe if you got a _good_ one, you'd like 'em better. At least half the contributors on this thread are from Serious Avocado Land (aka California) where ready-to-eat bruise-free avocados land in the stores daily at reasonable prices. I just brought home the first California-grown Hass avos of the season: big, ripe-but-not-mushy, unmarked and 99 cents each. Probably didn't travel 200 miles. You fellas out in the midwest probably get those rock-hard, fluorescent green jobs that taste like rubber tires.

I love having avocados with raw sugar! <3 Grew up eating it with that combination so the salt + avocado idea is quite odd to me. I might try having it with the salt but I don't think I'm gonna like it. So, I guess I'll lean more towards the sugar and milk for now.

One of my friends has her avocado with condensed milk... has anyone tried that combination?

The avocado might be the first thing I hunt down when I go grocery shopping as a result of this thread... Mmm...

Avo with milk?? This is very, very new to me. What would the consistency be like? How much milk per avo? I wanna try it, but I'm not trying it until someone tells me it's safe to do so

My favourite way to eat avo's would be just-peeled, slightly crushed (chunky) with some salt, some pepper and just a touch of sugar to help bring out the natural sweetness. I add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice when I'm feeling a bit more adventurous

Ive had avocadoes with condensed milk. Yum.

Glad to hear that there are still those out there who enjoy their avocadoes sweet!

healer: I say it's completely safe so go for it! Just crush the avocado, sometimes I like chunks too, and mix in some milk, only a couple tablespoons or so, throw in some sugar and mix mix mix til it looks combined, shouldn't be soupy though. Let me know how it goes.

Catback: I'm filipina as well and initially the salt idea seemed so alien to me.

Okay I'm hispanic and avo with milk and sugar is scary to me. UUMMMM avo salt and chile = good times. Will deffinitely have to look into the milk and sugar thing though, sounds interesting.

I have a recipe for avocado mousse (sweet). It's interesting but I prefer my avocados salty. I love guacamole, but my favourite is:

Slice an avocado in half and take out the stone. Then prepare a vinaigrette (olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper, mustard, and maybe some herbs of your choice) and fill the empty half of the avocado. Eat with a spoon! Yum, of course this is to serve 2 people.

I put some sugar on avocado last night just to see how it was and ... it was good, but not really for me. However, I could see how it would be popular in Asia; the sweet/pungent taste of avos with sugar is very much in line with the kind of flavors I've found in much unwesternized Asian cuisine, particularly from southern Thailand and Singapore, that area.

I too have eaten more avocados than I ever have before. Seems I forgot about avocados and how good they were until recently..and here I am now..avocado freak..

gotta say I eat avocado without anything added - you can put it in your green salad, or spread it on a sandwich instead of butter (savoury only).

IMHO, it does not need salt or sugar.

I love avocadoes. We have five trees in the backyard and so we're constantly eating them.

I've never tried them with milk and sugar. Quite frankly, the thought of it is making me nauseous. I'll have to lean toward the salt, but in a different form.

I like to eat it with a mixture of mayonnaise and soy sauce. Sometimes I'll take one of the large ones, about the size of a grapefruit, cut it in half, remove the pit, then add a dollop of mayo and drizzle the soy sauce over it. MMMMMM good!
