For whoever said that the "majority" of people get pierced to hurt themselves: no, just no. There are SOME people who do. And in that case, it can be a much safer means of expressing the desire to feel pain than a self-inflicted (NON-STERILE) cut. However, most people (myself included) do not get pierced for the pain. This is evidenced by the fact that the most common question I hear hanging around the tattoo shop is "Is this gonna hurt?" when someone comes in for a piercing.
Back on topic: I'm not pierced below the neck yet, but I just ordered 2 12Ga barbells (Anatometal!) and some 12Ga. Industrial Strength needles. I'm thinking it's time to do a double frenum! I've decided to do this one by myself, since I feel uncomfortable with most local piercers, and I can be sure of the quality of needles and jewelry this way, whereas most local parlors don't use jewelry that meets my personal standards for quality and finish. Once I get it done and (hopefully someday) have a chance to test it out, I'll report back here with my "findings".

For all of you wondering about airports and travelling... If a tongue piercing doesn't go off in a metal detector, I'd almost be willing to bet large sums of money that a penis piercing wouldn't either.
I've had my tongue pierced since April of 2001, and I have since travelled via the airways at least ten to fifteen times - the only time I've gone off is when I left my cell phone or keys in my pocket like a dumbass. Plus, if you get your penis pierced, I'd almost be willing to bet AGAIN that your zipper would create a false positive before a penis piercing would. I've never really thought hard about getting the man downstairs pierced, but I found that the tongue wasn't nearly as painful as widely assumed - it simply felt like a shot at the doctor's office. Although, now that I'm hearing about all these women loving it so much... Nah, probably still wouldn't. But major props to those who do.

I had this done when I was 18. It was the apadravya style, where the barbell vertically bisects the head of the penis. I am 25 now, and my piercing days are LONG over [grew out of it]. Still, I thought I would share MY experience with this.
Unfortunately, I never had the chance to have sex with it. Did it hurt? Yes, it hurt.. of course! It was not half as painful as a septum [bull-ring in the nose] piercing, though. It's much more painful than a tongue piercing, but about the same amount of pain as a nipple. I work with many people who are younger than me, and whenever something like that comes up in idle conversation, I like to interject my experience on the whole thing. Often, people really tend to cringe when they think about it, but if they had ever experienced it, they wouldn't cringe. Actually being pierced is a little awkward if you don't think of it in a medical or artistic way.. because someone's going to be handling your goods. Once you get past that, you're alright. They mark it, lightly "clamp" it, they tell you that they are going to push the needle on three [but they actually do it as soon as or RIGHT after they say "two", so you don't flinch and REALLY mess yourself up]. Well, I feel the pain and they tell me that the needle is only halfway through.. and I look down just in time to see the needle push the rest of the way through the top of the head of my penis. At that point I sigh in relief.. but I forget that technically I am only halfway through the piercing, as the barbell has to go back through the other way, to take place of the needle. Well, it happens. It just *happens*. They wrap the tip up with a large surgical glove and some medical tape. It's all paid for, I'm out the door, and I'm not walking funny. So far, so good. The next day when I woke up, my boxers had a bit of blood on them. I was very nervous about urinating for the first time, and I found out that it was with good reason - it burned! It burned badly the first three times, I remember. After that, it was alright. I just cleaned it regularly, inspected it and was generally careful. Cleaning was done with bactine and neosporin. It could ber painful, because I'd insert the little neosporin tube tip into my urethra and squeeze it in there, to get at it better on the inside. Once in awhile, over time, it would get a LITTLE infected, but nothing that a little bactine wouldn't cure. You have to be VERY attentive to it for a few months. I don't take well to piercings - they need ALOT of attention and healing time, and close VERY quickly if taken out. Eventually, I stretched, got larger barbells and saw where I ended up. Eventually I worked up to either a 6 or 4 gauge. I don't remember which - just that it was large. I took it out about 3 years ago, so I had it roughly 4 years. If you want to get one, I wouldn't advise for or against it. Right now, my attitude towards the whole tattoo/piercing crowd is "Do what you want, but be prepared to deal with the consequences". You don't have to worry about visuals with genital piercings, as they stay hidden - but don't scream out "discrimination" because you can't get a decent job when you are full of ink and metal. |

1) Make changes to my body-image. I'm in recovery from growing up in an alcoholic home, which lead to dysthymia. One of the things I realized as I worked on my issues was that I had constrained myself deeply, to freeze my emotions and be someone I was not. (A great book on this subject is Why Men Don't Get Enough Sex and Women Don't Get Enough Love -- reading the sections on why men don't express feelings was like reliving emotional abuse). So, anyhow, the person I was "conditioned" to believe I was didn't think men could have any piercings at all; not manly. Getting pierced is a way of saying, "I'm not him; this is my life." 2) I like the way they look (on men and on women). I like the subtext, which is "notice me! I embrace my sexual self." 3) My nipples aren't that sensitive, and there is some chance it will increase sensitivity. If nothing else, it will give my wife's tongue more to suck. Now, I'll concede that piercing my penis doesn't really appeal to me (yet, anyhow), but there may be perfectly great reasons why it is just the thing for someone else. I'm keeping an open mind... |

I've never had sex with a guy who had a penis piercing but I have to say the very thought turns my stomach. Now, I'm by far not a prude or a narrow-minded person, it's just an immediate squeamish response to the thought of it. And where I live, I am surrounded by people with all kinds of piercings on a daily basis, so it's hardly a new idea. The closest I've come is when this guy I was casually dating announced he made an appointment to get a prince albert - I think he was trying to impress me or maybe it was a last-ditch effort to get me in the sack but it had the opposite effect.
My sister was seeing a guy who had some sort of penis piercing and ended up having to go to the doctor due to friction and trauma to the inside of her vagina and her cervix. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was there but she did describe some marathon sessions, hours and hours of sex so I'm sure that was a factor. I have multiple holes in my ears and got my nose pierced but the thought of piercing a more sensitive area just absolutely curdles me. My nipples are sensitive and will remain intact. I have a hard time even thinking about a clit piercing without cringing. I worked with a woman who was into the pain aspect of piercing, mastering your own body, etc., and she described how she pierced her nipples and had pictures taken, going on and on about how cool the pictures were with blood running down her chest...my take on that is that life is painful enough without inflicting more. I've gone through some really intensely painful, hard times in life with my body and I'm all about comfort these days. Really I'm not a wimp and I might enjoy a little pain-type stimulation but I'd rather keep the metal out of it. |

As for the issue of whether or not a piercing will set off a metal detector:
It'd have to be a really fuckin' huge piece of jewelry and a very sensitive metal detector. I've been through several airports with 7/16" plugs in my ears (pretty huge chunks of metal) not to mention a labret stud and an eyebrow ring. I've never had them set off because of the piercings.

Just some observations i've made with my piercing.
When erect, any piercing like an apadravya, ampallang, pa, or dolphin do not have much material that's outside of the penis ie. 1/2 the barbell sticking out of the shaft. Usually there will just be the round end and maybe 1/8 an inch for breathing room. This means it's just a bump on the penis, usually around the head. With an apadravya, the barbell will rub directly on the g-spot (that is if you find it) in missionary position. Doggie style or any other "reversed" position a Prince Albert will rub against it. If you can get deep enough, you can reach a spot right at the top of the vagina that is immensly pleasurable. I used to only be able to affect this "deep spot" when fingering, but with the added sensation of my apadravya piercing it's become easier to do it when fucking. Blowjobs have gotten a lot better since I was pierced. It just feels so damn good when the girl plays with the piercing when sucking. A fair portion of girls are wary of the peircing when they first see it. They ask silly questions like "what if it comes out while we're doing it" and "won't that hurt?" but curiosity has 100% won over each time and at the end so far every girl has loved it. When I first got my piercing I felt an urge to "show it off" or talk (brag) about it. I think it was mostly because I got it to mark a turning point in my life. This urge has definetley gone away and I forget about it completely unless I have a boner, or when conversation turns toward piercings. That's pretty much all I can think of for now. I'm happy with my piercing, I think there's been many positives to having it and few negatives (initial pain getting it).

of all the people that i've ever spoken to about it, i've found only one guy that actually wants to do it, and one girl that wants a guy to do it. the guy is already full of holes, and the chick wants a guy to do it because she got a hole on her clit.

I have a frenum piercing. Just a couple of points related to what I've read here:
I got mine last April. I had a bad breakup at the end of last year and she was fucking with my head at the time. I needed something to distract me and I felt like doing something extreme. This was something extreme but not actually harmful to myself or someone else. I've only used it a handful of times, on my ex, and she was usually drunk (booty calls) so the feedback has not been really helpful, but she hasn't complained. No head yet. I look forward to my next relationship and giving it a fair workout. I have an acrylic bar I bought just for airport metal detectors. At all other times I wear stainless steel. My piercer said the only problem with acrylic is it can break, and that'd be nasty. You really don't notice it, although I have a habit of flicking mine thru my jeans while driving. Never pain tho, and it comes out and goes in easily so if someone didn't like it, I would just take it out during sex. All in all, I love it. I love the way it looks. I love "letting it slip out" that I have it and women asking to see it. I'd do it again. |

Zipping myself into my pants is bad enough, but piercing is out of the question as far as I'm concerned. Infections in other places are bad enough, I'd rather not feel like fire ants are eating my dick. Plus, there's always the threat of gangrene.

If you take proper care of the piercing the chances of infection are pretty low... your penis comes in contact with the inside of your underwear.... theres tons of other piercings that are out exposed to all kinds of germs that dont get infected... as for gangrene... you would have to let it go for a looooong time... id be really surprised if there were any documented cases of gangrene in a genital piercing... ive been tossing the idea of getting an Apadravya around... prolly will eventually... just gotta get the money... and work up the balls to do it...

yeah man, it happens ALL THE TIME! like 1 in 5 guys lose the ability to gain an erection completely because they decided to get a little metal through their dick!
get real. I would be suprised if there are any cases, over the entire course the history of genital piercing, where a guy couldn't get a woody after being pierced. Unless by "fuck up" you mean take a cleaver and chop your whole fucking dick off, by accident. I know i'm not the only one that feels genital piercings are hot, feel SO good, and make life more interesting. learn some tolerance. Edit: After exhaustive research on dangers of piercing, I found just one case study where some dude self-pierced his dick and just generally treated it bad, then when it became infected, he let it be until he had to be hospitalized for toxic shock from gangrene. damn. I don't get that, getting pierced is one thing, letting your cock be infected for months and develop gangrene is a whole other story.

K, it's pretty obvious that some of the posters here aren't fully aware that there are several kinds of male genital piercings, each of which is in a different part, whether it be the shaft, the scrotum, the head, through the urethra, whatever.
Keep in mind that a Prince Albert will present problems that a Frenum won't, and both are different from, say, a Guiche or an Ampallang. My bf has a frenum, and it literally is just a piece of jewellery through a thin layer of skin on his shaft, nothing more. Oh, and for all of you who say it would hurt too much, guess what? Getting your nipples done is probably the most painful. |

Let me be brief about this subject: I was bord with every hole my body needs. I am not adding any.
My thought on tattoos and piercings is this: I look back on the clothes I wore in the early 90's, when I was a young adult. I thought I looked really cool. Now, I would NEVER wear half of that crap. That's how I feel about these things - my tastes would change but my tattoo wouldn't. I can't think of something that I could get that I KNOW I would like 50 years from now, so I'm not doing it. /Not that there's anything wrong with it.

I agree with your logic for the tattoo, but you can always take a piercing out, and eventually the hole will close. After having read this thread I've actually started to consider getting either an amphallang or a frenum, but I'm still not sure if I'll actually do it, I need to check with my girlfriend first. edit: Have decided to go with the frenum, getting it done in a few days.

I dunno, I think it would take a lot of balls to get it done but I'm still somewhat interested for the new sensation / experience. Ive been into piercing for a while now - not necessarily genitalia but you know what I mean.. Anyway, its a little empowering to see how far you can take your body and even when looking at bigger gauge PA's, lobes, etc. - doesn't matter what it is.. Its just amazing to see what people can do. I personally am sitting at 2g right now and I love the way it looks and I don't think I would change it.
Piercing isn't for other people. Its something you do for yourself. |

Hah congrats Jstrider!
Look forward to the next time you get to use it. Apa's definetly increase the sensation, for yourself and your partner. I've been talking to some people, and have found out that in general, frenums are not all that appreciated in bed. I might be talking to a biased few though. Anyone that has experience with this piercing feel like speaking up for it?

genital piercings can be fun (and educational as well).
i've had a PA before, but took it out at the request of a girlfriend (long since an ex-girlfriend). i regret removing it now, since every girl i've been with since her has asked about it, and it'd be great to give them an example.

I have three tattoos, and I don't regret a thing. Why? Because I picked designs that were meaningful to me, such as the one on my calf I got a year after a miscarriage, or the one on my back to commemorate my grandfather and a friend I had lost. Not everyone who gets tattooed does it on the spur of the moment, and picks designs that mean nothing. Some of us actually put thought into our work, and consider it art. Skier: My boyfriend has a frenum, and being with him was my first experience with genital piercings. In all honesty, I do enjoy it, even though it hurt a bit at first, but it's like instant ribbing, and feels great. |

Yeah, I have to say that although I can respect people for doing this I don't think I could do it myself. Ummmm ouch. I am not a big fan of needles, never mind a large one going through the head of my penis. That area is just a little too sensitive.

(I can only speak on behalf of a frenum) -for me, yes. It feels slightly better and helps me to last longer -for her, yes. She says it actually rubs directly upon a highly sensitive area, although it did a little getting used to . Are you fuckin' sick?!! -Yes. Does that have anything to do with why I got pierced? Not at all.
