As for the issue of whether or not a piercing will set off a metal detector:
It'd have to be a really fuckin' huge piece of jewelry and a very sensitive metal detector.
I've been through several airports with 7/16" plugs in my ears (pretty huge chunks of metal) not to mention a labret stud and an eyebrow ring. I've never had them set off because of the piercings.
