I have no idea how I would know why 'a huge majority' do it, but I can speak of myself. I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking pretty hard about getting my nipples pierced, and it isn't to hurt myself. Here are some reasons I'm considering it:
1) Make changes to my body-image. I'm in recovery from growing up in an alcoholic home, which lead to dysthymia. One of the things I realized as I worked on my issues was that I had constrained myself deeply, to freeze my emotions and be someone I was not. (A great book on this subject is
Why Men Don't Get Enough Sex and Women Don't Get Enough Love -- reading the sections on why men don't express feelings was like reliving emotional abuse). So, anyhow, the person I was "conditioned" to believe I was didn't think men could have any piercings at all; not manly. Getting pierced is a way of saying, "I'm not him; this is my life."
2) I like the way they look (on men and on women). I like the subtext, which is "notice me! I embrace my sexual self."
3) My nipples aren't that sensitive, and there is some chance it will increase sensitivity. If nothing else, it will give my wife's tongue more to suck.
Now, I'll concede that piercing my penis doesn't really appeal to me (yet, anyhow), but there may be perfectly great reasons why it is just the thing for someone else. I'm keeping an open mind...
