People do not get anything pierced to 'hurt themselves' (at least, the majority don't).

Reasons for piercing include aethetics, stimulation (sexual or otherwise) and body claiming.

For example, male genital piercings are so common in India that some women won't even consider you for a sexual partner unless you have the requisite ah...hardware.

I really wish people would do some reading before they scream "SICK!!!".
