People do not get anything pierced to 'hurt themselves' (at least, the majority don't).
Reasons for piercing include aethetics, stimulation (sexual or otherwise) and body claiming.
For example, male genital piercings are so common in India that some women won't even consider you for a sexual partner unless you have the requisite ah...hardware.

If they do it in India and it's part of theire culture, then more power to them. I however, don't have to do worldwide research to tell you that there is no way in hell that anything sharp is coming anywhere near my dick.
