I don't know what it would be like , but I know one thing, don't hire live music. Seriously, and band that is good enough to have isn't going to want to do it, and any band that wants to do it, you don't want. Save money, get a dj. He will play the music you want exactly how you want it.

exactly right.
my preference as the hypothetical groom would be a very simple event held outdoors (which would make it a spring/summer wedding in many parts of the country), nowhere near a church, and over in a fairly prompt and cheap fashion while still making it a >insert cliche here about "perfect day"/"most special day of your life"< .

We got married at the courthouse on a Friday afternoon in one of the judge's offices. He was a friendly guy and there were pictures that his children had drawn taped to all of the walls. I don't think he got to marry many people; at any rate, he was very enthusiastic about the whole thing, and held a wonderful ceremony. We took a few snaps with the digital cam, and then I, my wife, and our witness repaired to the courthouse parking lot for a tailgater reception.

I wouldn't trade that day for anything. When it comes to weddings, the important thing is not that it be big or fancy; the important thing is that it be just right for you. Ours was.

When I get married I don't want to spend a fortune on the wedding and be in debt for years to come. I'd rather save some money and gather a down payment for a house. I think that with a smaller budget it's still possible to have the ceremony and the reception done tastefully... I just don't think it's necessary to go overboard. However I would def like to have a honeymoon somewhere tropical

I'd also like it to be more of a small intimate wedding with only good friends and family... why have people there who you hardly know and rarely talk to.

Mr.S and I are getting married next June. So we've been talking about this topic a lot... or at least I have. Since we'll be living together for at least six months before we get hitched, and that goes against everything my family believes in and all that shit, I won't be having a big traditional wedding ceremony. Don't really want one.

This will be my second marriage. My first one officially ends on Dec.1, and I have to wait six months before marrying again, which will make it in early May. As of right now, Mr.S and I will just go down to the courthouse as soon as we can to make it legal. We're having a commitment/betrothal ceremony before we move in together, so we'll feel quite married anyway.

Here's the special part: On June 12th, we're throwing a big reception. It's my parents' wedding anniversary, so we'll be killing two birds with one stone. Our reception will be very special because we'll be the entertainment. Mr.S has a degree in theatre, and I've always been a theatre buff, and we both really love broadway and musicals and all that jazz (pardon the pun). So we're putting on a show during the reception. We'll be singing, dancing, doing skits, monologues, comedy, etc. A lot of audience participation. It'll be the perfect way to introduce each other to our respective clans, and wonderful evidence of the great match we make.

It'll have the cake and dancing of a regular wedding reception, but this one will be really personal and very much a part of who we are separately and as a couple.

realising this.
i´ve decided that if and when i ever get married, it will be with someone with simliar taste and plans.

so, my wedding will be like this.
we´d be married in a beautiful, small church on a sweet summers day (but not one of those absolute skinkers we get) where there´s a light playful breeze... in the late afternoon.
then as the suns going down, there´d be a small intimate reception, in a private garden with a view of beautiful Sydney harbour.
the reception would be lit by hundreds of candles as the light faded away.
there´d be a small jazz band, playing light classics.
light canapes would be served, and we´d all enjoy free flowing BillieCart Salmon and Bollinger.
after a little while, i´d lead my pretty bride out and have the first dance to some funky version of Cheek to Cheek.
then we´d leave, in a chauffeur driven vintage convertible to spend the night in a fancy hotel.
the next morning, we´d head off on our honeymoon to Bora Bora or Bedarra or someplace as equally close to heaven.

but that day ain´t going to happen anytime soon...

Not true. I was "allowed" (I bow to you) to choose all the music, which I carefully choreographed with the ceremony. Also, I was able to work with a couple of florists to fly in many arrangements of fresh Gardenias. The flowers were beautiful and the odor was exquisite. I was told by many in attendance some weeks afterward, that our wedding was one of the most lovely anyone had attended. I like to think that I played a role in it's success.

I want a classic wedding. I either want one in a very nice, clean, preferably white church with a balcony or outside with a white alter, a lot of white chairs, and nice flower arrangements. I want my wife to be wearing one hell of a wedding gown, too. I like those sleek, tight fitting, strapless ones. Mmm.

Ugh. I hate to use this as an opportunity to rant, but I'm going to do it anyhow.

I don't know precisely when weddings turned into beauty pageants, but it seriously ticks me off. This whole "it's her special day" crap drives me nuts. It's a wedding, a celebration of the union of TWO people. It should be special, sure, but the focus should be on the ceremony, the ritual, the acknowledgement by the community of the relationship and commitment of these two people. It makes me sad and nauseous to see how it's become all about the "perfect day," the dress, the bridesmaids, the flowes, the cake, preserving every single fricking moment for posterity to the point where you forget to savor the moment and appreciate the import of what you're doing. And too often it becomes an excuse for the woman to be the center of attention, to have this "me me me I'm a princess" day that turns ordinarily nice women into Bridezilla. The whole wedding cult just turns me off. The average price tag for a wedding is now something like $18K. That's a new car, or a downpayment on a house. And it seems to me that so many women want a wedding so badly that they overlook little details - like the fact that they SHOULDN'T BE MARRYING THIS PERSON - in order to have their big day.

Now, I'm all for symbolism and for wanting to mark the moment by having a beautiful ceremony and having meaningful music and surrounding yourself with people who are important to you. But honestly, when women start planning their weddings in junior high and then go searching for a guy to prop up across the aisle, I no longer wonder about the divorce rate.

Edit:

Not to totally hijack this thread, let me

1. admit that I'm as guilty as the next person of falling victim to the lure of the fluffy white dress - I had a homemade wedding dress that my aunt made for me and that I love, but every once in a while I see photos of the Virgin Bride in the wedding section of the paper and suffer a pang of longing. Someday I'm just going to go to a $99 sale at David's Bridal and buy one of the damned things and have photos taken of me to exorcise the whole thing and then donate the dress to the Goodwill.

2. respond to the actual question: since I'm already married and we already renewed our vows once, the next vow renewal would be just me and Ratbastid wearing something totally simple and timeless - almost like a djellaba (sp?) - or even naked, on a beach or in the mountains or in the woods, and we'd just say some kind of vow to each other. And then eat petit fours. I love those things. And then we'd go skinnydipping and have good sex and sun ourselves on the shore.

i never wanted a huge lavish wedding, i always hated going to them, where there are 300 people and the bride and groom spend no time with their family and friends who came hundreds of miles to see them...and now they are in debt...not a good way to start a marriage...my wedding was gorgeous and simple...30 of my closest friends....my photos and the ceremony were both gifts from friends...my dress was from ross (even though i would love a huge gorgeous princess gown at least once..lol) and it was the most beautiful day ever...but , as for my dream wedding... 3 words, ELVIS and LAS VEGAS...enough said

Glad you asked...

Being of no particular religious affiliation, instead of the traditional church, I want to be married in this small theatre in my hometown. It's 100+ years old, very gorgeous. It would be very easy to decorate--a few candles, some drapey fabric, and voila! I'll probably have a rather traditional dress and veil....ivory, not true white because white washes me out. Then a reception with food and wine and dancing.

Too bad I'll probably never get what I want...I'm going to have to have two weddings, just like I had to have two graduation parties. I hate being in the middle of a family of alchies and a family of tee-totallers.

because both of us and our families were in a state of flux at the time, everyone moving somewhere different, rather than have a big deal wedding here, inviting everyone and paying for them to get drunk, we pooled our frequent flyer miles and went to Europe, just immediate families and a few others, 14 total, and went to Paris, Rome, and then Florence, where my dad, who used to be a preacher, married us in the garden of a hotel. we had contacted the hotel before, and they made a cake and got a photographer and someone to play a harp. Then everyone left the next day, and we went to Capri. I thought it was perfect, and actually cost less than alot of weddings I've been to. I would not have changed a thing.

I don't and didn't buy this...

When I was married my wife and I planned it together... I had some very basic things that I wanted:

1) No church or religion - I'm not religious and don't see why God should play any role in my life when I don't believe

2) No marriage license - why do I need the city or state to tell me that it's OK to be married

3) No hissy fits from any family members (I've heard the horror stories) or the whole thing is off...

We had the most stress free wedding and 10 years later I am still getting congratulated on what was one of the most meaningful weddings.

We chose to get married on our own terms. No one officiated. We, in effect, married ourselves.

She designed her dress and I designed my jacket (others made them but the design was ours).

The only complaint was I didn't get more dessert because I was too busy thanking people for coming...

One of the happiest days of my life.

Thats what My wife and I did. We had a kick ass time and when we got back we hade a huge house warming party. (Casue we only spent $180 on the wedding we had enough left over for a down payment on a really nice home and 3 kegs of beer.)

We had our Honey moon whlie we got married. We stayed at Madalay Bay. We got married at some dumpy chapel on the strip. We got pictures that the place took and the funniest thing is for the pews (sp) are plastic lawn chairs painted gold.

We still refer to is a white trash wedding.

Here's a shot from a wedding I photographed this summer along Lake Ontario. These guys just wanted to have a little fun with the day (honest, took very little prodding from me), so they decided to cool of with a spin around the bay.

Whatever you guys decide to do, do it for yourselves and have FUN with it.

I'm going to get the most overpriced, pretentious, gauche, arrogant, prissy nazi wedding planner I can find...

...then I'm going to tie them up, gag them and hide them somewhere at the reception venue. The first guest to find them and whack them with a whiffle bat wins a free op rum slushee.

Either that or a Duke Ellington jazz band, Veuve Clicquot champagne and a Paris honeymoon; it depends on how much of a overbearing bitch the mother of the bride is.
