It was AWESOME!!!! My hub and I just got back from seeing it.
Lots of action, a little romance, great special effects - a really fun time.

Now you could listen to the critics who say the movie ruined famous literary characters - like Dr. J & Mr. H or the Invisible Man. Or you could just sit back and enjoy the fun.

Me? I go to the movies for fun. Don't lecture me, don't make me think too hard (I do that all day at work). Take me someplace I've never been for a couple hours while I munch on popcorn and Raisinettes!

Two big thumbs up here! In fact we'll probably go back and see it again since our friend couldn't get in with us - it was sold out by the time she arrived!

Can't decide whether or not we want to see it. We probably will since we both like Connery. But it just looks...weird.

Alan Quartermain (sean connery), and Mina Harker isn't dracula's wife, but the protagoinist from dracula. I believe some sherlock holmes characters also might show up.

I saw LXG last night and I found it very entertaining.
LXG is simply a fun action movie to watch. The plot is so-so and its not realistic at all but if you just use your imagination a bit you'll find it to be good fun. This is a movie that you have to be open minded about. Critics are way to cynical for this movie so they reviewed it poorly.
The cool thing about this movie for me is how I read about most of these characters in books and now I get to see them kick some ass on screen. I don't think they ruined those characters they just expanded upon their special abilities.
I would reccomend this movie to anyone who enjoys Sean Connery's films. Also, to anyone looking for a good fun action film. Despite some "scary" images this would be a good movie to bring kids too. I don't recall any foul language or sex scenes. Granted there were some mild inuendos. I think most kids would enjoy the action and adventure the movie offers.
In conclusion LXG is a movie full of action and adventure. It shouldn't be thought of as anything else.

The movie is meant to be showing these people in the days AFTER they were famous. Alan Quartermain for example is living in Africa in retirement.

One item I found pretty funny is that the Invisible Man is not THE IM. The movie producers were unsure about the rights to the H.G. Wells character, so this is someone who stole the formula.

They did a good job with the characters, and I LOVE the job they did on the Nautilus! Everything is bigger than life. Remember this is not meant to have any basis in reality and you'll be fine!

I haven't seen the movie yet but I loved the graphic novel.
Sadly it sounds like they went more for the adventure aspect then the dark feeling of the novel.
They also brought in characters who are suggested to have been in previous leagues (Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer).
And since Connery is the major star (and I guess he fought with the director and did the final cut) Quartermain becomes the founder and organizer.
In the novel he is an opium addict and it is the woman who was attacked by Dracula who pulled the League together.
I am still going to see it but someday I hope to see a movie where they don't hopelessly screw up the book it is based on.

I want to see that movie just for the car. That's one hell of a cool car. It's supposed to be like 20 feet long. Man, and I thought my 67 Wildcat was huge.

The sub is really nice as well.

I really like the old school design of the machinery.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen extraordinarily sucked

hey everyone, i just joined this forum today (this is only my second post ) and i thought i would kick things off by reviewing a movie i saw last night, TLXG. as you can porb tell from the subject line, this won't be a favorable review, for which i will give my reasons. also, IT WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS, so be warned.....
first of all, TLXG was originally a graphic novel that was based on a sort of justice league comprised of legendary characters from great literary works. the moviemakers took some artistic license, however, and changed some of the characters around. the movie character list is as follows:

Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery) -- quatermain is a famous british hunter/adventurer from the book King Solomon's mines.

Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah) -- nemo is, of course, the legendary sea captain in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, who pilots the very cool submarine, the Nautilus

Mina Harker (Peta Wilson) -- harker was the bride of dracula in Bram Stroker's Dracula.

Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran) -- heres my first problem with the movie. apparently, rodney skinner is an invisible man who stole the invisibity potion from the original invisible man in H.G. Well's classic. the moviemakers just invented this guy because they couldn't get licensing rights to the real invisible man. whatever.

Dorian Gray (Stewart Townsend) -- from The Picture of Dorian Gray, this man stays forever young and immortal while a portrait of him ages and dies. can only be defeated if he looks at the portrait, which will reverse the magic

Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng) -- no introduction needed for this guy

Agent Tom Sawyer (Shane West) -- this is where i had one of my biggest beefs with the film. the comic book featured no american characters, so the moviemakers chose the most famous one to represent america, tom sawyer. apprently, Mar Twain's Missouri-bred trouble-maker is all grown up and a member of "the american secret service". am i the only one that finds that to be rediculous?

ok, so there are the characters. its a cool idea, but the plot is where the movie bit the big one. it starts out with a guy called 'M' recruiting TLXG to stop a madman (the Phantom) from waging a war on Europe. the league goes to venice to stop him only to find out that the Phantom is actually M himself, and the whole war thing was a ruse to steal the powers of the league. dorian gray was a traitor who was able to steal the powers of harker, jekyll, skinner, and the mechanical plans of the great ship, the nautilus, from cpt. nemo. so the league then goes the M' base in antartica (of all places) to stop him and get revenge on gray. while in antartica, M's TRUE identinty is revealed (yea, hes already had 2 identitys, why not throw in a third one). as in turns out, M is Professor Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes's villainous fiend from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. anyway, the league kills moriarty, harker kills gray (in an act of vengeance. gray originally stole her "vampire power" by obtaining a blood sample while having sex with her. this pissed her off big time). however, quatermain dies at the end and tom sawyer assumes his role as the greatest adventurer in the world.
and that right there is two hours of a twisted, convulted, complex plot in a nutshell. so, it wasnt so much the idea was bad, it was simply the craptaculur story.

on a side note: i am a HUGE indiana jones fan, and am eagerly awaiting Indy 4 in 2005. while i was watching the movie i noticed a lot of indy references, two of which stuck out in my mind. 1) when the league travels to antartica, you see a map with a traveling red line tracing their route. this was lifted directly from indiana jones. and 2) dorian gray dies when harker shows him his picture. the portrait portrays a man who has been dead for many years, a rotten corpse, so gray ends up like that in matter of seconds. this scene was oddly similar to the last scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when Donovan drank from the wrong grail, got really old really fast, and died. i just thought those were two cool little snippets in which the movie was influenced by indy. anyway, theres my review. feel free to poat comments on what you guys thought about the movie

*A Maveric Review of the LXG Movie*

All the basic information about the movie you want to know about can be found by clicking on the link provided below-

http://www.lxgmovie.com/

I have not read the comic on which this movie is based, just never really got around to it, but after seeing this movie, I am definitely more inclined to pick up the series...

When I first heard about the LXG movie going into production, I had reservations. I guess, I was just too jaded from most of the earlier failed attempts at making a decent superhero movie. Don't get me wrong there have been a few, just not that many (atleast until recently that is...).

Then one day while sitting in the local movie theater, I witnessed the LXG trailer. It looked stunning, adventureous, actioned packed, and very- as Dorian Grey might say, "...complicated". I was unexpectedly surprised. I really desired to see this movie despite it not being my particularly favorite time-period or cast of characters.

I'd like to state first and foremost, you absolutely must apply suspension of disbelief. Otherwise you will utterly hate, HATE this movie. In other words, enjoy it for what it is - a fantasy adventure set in the late 1800's.

The acting is superb by all actors involved. I was even surprised by the talent of the actors who portrayed Agent Tom Sawyer (although I expected his accent to be thicker) and Captain Nemo. I was alreadly well aware of the talent of Jason Flemyng who portrays Dr. Jekyle/ Mr. Hyde. Jason played in one of my all-time favorite movies, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Each character's personality was very well defined and could easily be recognized even if you did not know their names.

The dialogue wasn't campy or cliched but used in such a way that helped each character enhanse their personality traits. Some examples are Dorian Grey (immortal) being pompus and egomanical, Alan Quartermain (hunter/ explorer) being wise and weary, Capt. Nemo (inventor pirate) being regal and intelligent, Mrs. Harker (lady vampire) being mysterious and seductive, Tom Saywer being young and enthusiastic, Skinner (invisible man) being sly and witty, and Dr. Jeykle being weak-willed and MR. Hyde being overbearing... Basically, the movie seemed to be written around all the characters and their plight rather than the typical leading star actor.

All of the actors seemed to have great chemistry together (atleast on film). I have read about a rumor that the actors are very willing and eagerly awaiting to make a sequel.

For the most part the special effects were good but not great. I was really suprised at the detail of the costumes, sets, and designs.

The plot of the movie is a bit far fetched and a little predictable but the distraction of the characters overshadowed the plot. Then again, it was an action adventure movie not a documentary or drama...

A couple of things bothered me. For one, In Venice Italy, the size of the streets should not be big enough for Captain Nemo's very large "automobile" and the canals should not be large enough for Capt. Nemo's Titanic sized ship/vessel. Second was the ending right before the credits rolled... It was a bit cheesy and should have been left on the cutting room floor, but atleast they didn't over do it...

If you want to see a good action fantasy adventure (heavy on the fantasy) movie with lots of colorful characters, I recommend this movie.

I always watch the movies all the way through to the end credits, becasue sometimes they have special clips or interesting facts but I noticed nothing worth waiting around for...

So, Anyone else see it? I am particulary fond of the character Dr. Jeykle/ Mr. Hyde but I'm probably biased (being a fan of Jason Flemyng). What did yall think of his performance? Also, I was wondering if anyone knows more about the actor who played Tom Sawyer.

thanks, Mav

I went to see LXG with too high of hopes, I think. I also firmly believe that if it had been in theatres two years ago, I'd have thought it was great, as it was I found it a bit lacking.

All the characters were great, but they had a failing in how they were introduced. They obviously didn't have time for a full blown origin for each (although I would of loved to see them discover the invisible man-immaculate conceptions my ass) but I felt that they invested so much in building the characters through the dialouge that I wanted to see them in action much more.

Discontinuity abounded in make-up and stances, but thankfully I can't recall there being any cigarattes in it.

The buget also seemed ill managed-way to much was spent on the inside of nemo's sub, leaving obvious backdrop seperations in the background, some instances of blurry fx, and not covering up 'tricks' well enough (the otherwise wonderful scene in Dorian Grays Library was slightly marred by the fact that it was obvious that they had a stationary platform dropping-mostly-blank pages supposedly coming from books being shot to pieces)

Skinner was the comic relief in the movie (I think?) and didn't do it for me. I would rather him of been a little bit straighter, or a little bit wackier then the middle ground that the character stumbled down.

All in all, though, I thought it was an enjoyable movie, and don't regret seeing it one bit. I think hollywood has just upped the bar a bit in recent years for action movies, and LXG falls a bit short.

I saw it today, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really liked all the characters. And Maveric, Tom Sawyer is played by Shane West, and the only other film I can specifically remember him being in was the teen tearjerker A Walk To Remember, with Mandy Moore. Thats about all I know about him, and I, too, was disappointed in his accent, or lack thereof.

Side note: I really hope that a sequel becomes a reality, and if it does, I think it would be a good idea for ol' Huck Finn to show up.

I'm like Redravin. I loved the graphic novel and, having read the review above, am saddened that they could come so close to making the book into a movie, and then screw around with it. Would movie goers have been upset that a woman (Mina Harker) leads the league instead of Quatermain?

I doubt Hollywood will ever make a decent adaptation of an Alan Moore book.

I enjoyed it.

Quartermain (Connery) sucked
And Sawyer was blah.
but the rest of the heros were cool.

Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde was done well.
Nemo, I loved him (I did not expect the martial arts which was a pleasure)
The IM was witty but not overly so
Dorian Grey was interesting and smooth.
Mina Harker was wonderful and beautiful (well played)

The villians were ho-hum and clumsy.

I enjoyed this as the fantasy it was, and like all the references to the classics. (just like the graphic novel)
The scene in Venice was a bit over the top though,
they could have done without it, I think.

But it was a nice summer movie overall, and not a waste of money.
I'd go see it again.

Perhaps the worst movie I have ever seen. And yes, I've seen "Blankman".

It was so bad I felt physical pain sitting all the way through it. Completely retarded and pretentious. So fake that I couldn't even enjoy it as a light-hearted, don't take me seriously type of movie.

I loved when Sean Connery jumps out of the car going like 100 miles per hour and lands flat on his feet, as if he just stepped out of bed instead of a speeding car.

Some cool scenes here and there, but it was so dumb it just didn't matter.

The movie was so-so. Cheesy lines thrown in here and there. Capt. Nemo looked like the guy from Monk if he joined ZZ Top. Peta Wilson is still hot. Jeckyl and Hyde is the best character in the movie. Overall, I give it a 6/10.

As my first post on this forum, I'll say something about the flick. I have seen it twice now (I'm not obsessed with it, I was just bored and friends were going the second time) and I really liked it. Of course there are a few cheesy parts to it, but it's supposed to be a fun movie.

My favorite character was Captain Nemo. They really did a good job with him, and the character was just awesome.

The only thing I didn't like was how it ended. I won't say anything for possible spoilers.

Moore is becoming like Phillip K Dick for me. In that I love the work they do, but when I see a movie based on it I run screaming in the other direction. I haven't seen the film, but I'm a huge fan of the comic, and I could tell just from the trailer that it would just piss me off.
You know, it's not that I mind the whole change the movie from the book thing, it's just when you take the coolest things about the book and do just the opposite. One of the driving conceits of the book is the Mina Harker/Quatermain interplay. It is mostly based on the idea that Mina is A) Large and in Charge B) possessed of no super powers C) tougher than everybody else because she's been face to face with the worst evil ever. Quatermain is an opium addict who can barely hold it together. This tension is one of the things, along with Moore's obsessive inclusion of every notable victorian lit character, that makes the book so freaking cool.
Turning the movie into a vehicle for Connery with a sexy vamp girl sidekick inverts the play on Victorian sexual politics that is so enticing, and turns it into a pulp action film.
And don't get me started on Nemo....

Oh, and for the record, Mina Harker was not the bride of Dracula, she was the bride of Jonathan Harker and was rescued from Dracula's influence.

I am a big fan of the book, and while the movie was different, I think it helped it appeal to a wider audience.
It was a good action/matinee film, and the addition of a character like Tom Sawyer helped the illeterate masses identify with a character they had at least heard of.
All in all, I wasn't blown away, just pleasantly suprised with a fun movie.

Overall, I liked the movie but thought it had a few problems. The whole thing seemed rushed to me. Like they were just flying through the storyline. I would have liked to have seen them spend a little more time locating each of the LXG "members". Also, I found the action scenes were a little hard to watch. It was all quick-cuts and it was difficult to keep up with.

This is one movie I think would have made a better TV series or mini-series.

I loved the cast and the story-line, I just wish the director could have pulled it together a little better.
