Moore is becoming like Phillip K Dick for me. In that I love the work they do, but when I see a movie based on it I run screaming in the other direction. I haven't seen the film, but I'm a huge fan of the comic, and I could tell just from the trailer that it would just piss me off.
You know, it's not that I mind the whole change the movie from the book thing, it's just when you take the coolest things about the book and do just the opposite. One of the driving conceits of the book is the Mina Harker/Quatermain interplay. It is mostly based on the idea that Mina is A) Large and in Charge B) possessed of no super powers C) tougher than everybody else because she's been face to face with the worst evil ever. Quatermain is an opium addict who can barely hold it together. This tension is one of the things, along with Moore's obsessive inclusion of every notable victorian lit character, that makes the book so freaking cool.
Turning the movie into a vehicle for Connery with a sexy vamp girl sidekick inverts the play on Victorian sexual politics that is so enticing, and turns it into a pulp action film.
And don't get me started on Nemo....
Oh, and for the record, Mina Harker was not the bride of Dracula, she was the bride of Jonathan Harker and was rescued from Dracula's influence.
