.270 or .280 caliber
Guys, what is your opinion of the .270 caliber. I want one, but a friend of mine has a .280 and he says it is better than the .270. I have a .30-06 so recoil is not a problem, I just want to know the pros and cons since I have no experience regarding any of these calibers.

I'm not sure what he means by "better", and you might want to ask him to define it more clearly.
If you are talking about hunting whitetail deer, which is what we would do with those calibres here in upstate NY, they all seem like good choices. My gut feeling is that the .270 will have wider ammo choices than the .280 but you would need to look into that further. |

The .270 and 30-06 are nearly identical, the .280 shoots flatter and faster and are more expensive. I own two 30-06, basically for the availability to fin rounds anywhere and in varying weights. Personally, I see the .280 as a "fad" round, but very effective. The '06 has been around for about 100 years now. I have two hunting partners who have the .280 and have had good results.

rebarrel your '06 to .270. You're really looking for a solution for what works. You're not gonna really gain anything, but you may know that. Quote:
eh, the .270 does shoot a bit flatter than the 06. now, heres the simple truth of the matter, lighter bullets fired faster through brush have less of a chance of resisting deflection than a larger slower moving bullet. Consider a new lever-gun, hell, if you really wanna be crazy about it pick up a Marlin in .45-70, that'll hammer anything deader than dead. Thats the nature of hunting in the woods, honestly now, how many deer have you taken at more than 100 yards? None if you're really hunting in the woods.

Thats true, I have never really had a need to go out past 100 yds, longest shot was 106 but that was a one time thing, and I could have waited for him to come in. I think the .280 may be a fad, and I just didnt know where it stood. I would love to have a .270 just for the fact that it seems to resist dings and flying off course a lil better then the 06. As far as the .45-70 idk, would have to try one out first. How about the availibilty of ammo for it? I do have a winchester .30-30 that I use when im really far down in the bottoms with tons of underbrush. I guess that answeres my own questions.

Ziadel, I read an article in Guns and Ammo or one of the other mags a few years back where they tested a variety of ammunition and calibers when fired through brush. There basic conclusion was that no bullet, whether heavy and slow or fast and light performed any better when deflected than any other.
It does seem that a one ounce shotgun slug would resist being knocked off course or disentgrating better than a light bullet but they couldn't prove it. woo, I know how you feel. Sometimes you just want a new gun. I got a new rifle a year ago so now I have a craving for a new handgun even though I really don't need one.

ammo availability for the .45-70 isnt great, you prolly wont find it at wally world, but your not gonna find .280 ammo either. I dunno what to tell you here, if you want a .270 or a .280, get one, but if you expect this to do anything better than your 06 does, your gonna be disappointed. Quote:
If you're in western new york, then you know, dont look to guns and ammo for cues, look to the old man in the woods whos been out in the woods every hunting season his whole life, scrutinize his equipment, ask him what he thinks. he'll tell you. a .30-30 is more then enough oomph for ANY deer up to 125 yards. its that simple. check out winchesters new line of .30-30 ammo, the addition of spitzer type bullets fis giving it even more of a performance boost. woo, if you just want a new rifle, get it in a cartridge that will do something the 06 won't. http://www.chuckhawks.com/300Win_Mag.htm like that.

I guess I will just go ahead and admit it, I want a new toy. Ok good got that out of my system.
Now as far as the slow and heavy vs. light and fast, im not gonna even open up that pandoras box. ![]() I have heard good things about the new leveraction stuff that they are doing for the .30-30 and I will def have to try those out. I still like my .30-30 for brush hunting, it is quick up, and shorter than my .06 so I can get it into action faster especially when I am stalk hunting. It aint nothin pretty, but has never failed to do its part in taking deer. So maybe I just need to go ahead a get a new toy and get it out of my system! ![]()

Ziadel, G and A didn't pick any one cartridge over another. Their basic conclusion was that no bullet would perform with any predictability when striking brush so the best bet, no matter what your shooting, is to wait for a clearer shot.
My two deer guns are a Savage 210 Slug rifle with a 1-4 scope and a Savage in .300 WSM with a 3-9. If I asked most of the old timers around here they would tell me to buy an Ithaca 16gauge and use the bead on the front as my sight.

Sorry Woo,
Let's just say I understand the feeling of wanting a new toy. I'm so dumb about it, if I were you I would get the .280 just because not many people have it. To muddy the waters even more, have you ever looked into a .25-06?

now a .25-06 will do something a .30-06 won't....
I'd look into the .25 WSSM first tho...
