As far as the .45-70 idk, would have to try one out first. How about the availibilty of ammo for it? I do have a winchester .30-30 that I use when im really far down in the bottoms with tons of underbrush. I guess that answeres my own questions.

ammo availability for the .45-70 isnt great, you prolly wont find it at wally world, but your not gonna find .280 ammo either.

I dunno what to tell you here, if you want a .270 or a .280, get one, but if you expect this to do anything better than your 06 does, your gonna be disappointed.

It does seem that a one ounce shotgun slug would resist being knocked off course or disentgrating better than a light bullet but they couldn't prove it.
thats hardly hard evidence, guns and ammo has a way of glorifying the newest and latest trendy crap, and all the innovation is in lighter and faster bullets, heavy and slow is 'unpopular' because everyone and their brother wants something really flat shooting, when its just uneccesary.

If you're in western new york, then you know, dont look to guns and ammo for cues, look to the old man in the woods whos been out in the woods every hunting season his whole life, scrutinize his equipment, ask him what he thinks. he'll tell you.

a .30-30 is more then enough oomph for ANY deer up to 125 yards. its that simple.

check out winchesters new line of .30-30 ammo, the addition of spitzer type bullets fis giving it even more of a performance boost.

woo, if you just want a new rifle, get it in a cartridge that will do something the 06 won't.
